Well, since you asked nicely…👀 (P.S. I had a feeling you were the same anon omg HAHA-)

Alright so here are some fun facts and headcanons I have based on my observations so far:

(Just a heads up: it's pretty long my bad HFSKFJ-)

They have different ranks as shown on their mining badge :D

Thankfully you can clearly see Sides‘ number of rank from that scene, but Sunny‘s is a bit harder to spot accurately. Still, from what I can tell it‘s relatively low, either 2/3 (Update: it's probably 3). Both director and production designer confirmed that they had planned to have the badge play a bigger role since the miners going up the rank/tiers and being promoted is a big thing amongst them, but ended up putting it to the side due to how the story naturally developed.

Still, this begs the question of why. Why isn't he promoted as much as Sideswipe? Is it bc he does the bare minimum and doesn’t want to scratch his paintjob? Is it because Sunstreaker doesn‘t get along well with the rest and constantly gets into fights with them? Or was there any other reason for that?

Mind you all the other characters have various different ranks as well, so it's not something they decided on a whim. Here are some examples of the others' badges:

((Unrelated to the twins, but I LOVE the visual storytelling just from this omg. Orion obviously being the lowest ranked bc he keeps getting into trouble, and you can actually see where his badge ranks were removed lmaooo. Wheeljack placing relatively low probably bc of his tendency to find explosive energon lines and causing chaos LOL- Sides and Arcee are relatively average, meanwhile Jazz and Ironhide being higher ranked showcasing their hardwork and competency. D-16 being the closest to Elita's rank (her rank being Team Leader—note that hers has an additional wing on top of her full badge), with him only missing one more rank before being promoted just like her...he really meant it when he said he's been working hard to get promoted omg 😭🙏))

From the very rare glimpses of Sunny (and his occasional duplicates lol) we get from the movie, we can see that he's self-assured, and based on the one scene where he's in focus, his reaction to Orion's revelation and speech about the truth seemed to be something like indignation and fury and focus. Contrast that to Sideswipe being at a loss and openly looking to Orion for guidance, and you kinda get a picture of their characterizations in the movie.

There's just something about it that scratches the itch in my brain the right way gah- Maybe it's the way it reminds me of their original toy description. And maybe I am projecting my own headcanons, but since this movie is an amalgamation of all the different continuities, why not?

Like imagine if Sunny was actually a capable miner but his "stellar" personality made him butt heads with the people he work with and get into fights all the time? What if he also kept getting demoted like Orion due to his insubordination and general unwillingness to work with others he deem a waste of his time?

But they were still cogless bots at the end of the day and he needed to survive, so he has to swallow his anger and shoulder the punishments and heavy duties. How does his relationship with Sides come to play? Are they close or distant brothers? We never even got to see them interact on screen which is- I'm fine :) yep. This is fine.

I've always wished we got to see his sociopathic tendencies in full play and woven into the story...we did see that more or less in IDW, but due to plot reasons and the circumstances, we see his character grow exponentially and drastically even throughout the course of the story that this characteristic of his never really got the spotlight. I want to see his character explored in a different angle in TF1, or in any canon media for that matter. I've read a bunch of amazing fics that showcase this but I need more......

And as much as I love Sideswipe in IDW, he was a lot more...hm- (Intense? Dark ???) ...troubled in that universe compared to his G1 counterpart due to the nature of his origin. So it's really sweet to see a more friendly, wide-eyed, easy going version of him here haha

Like we got to see him next to Arcee a lot of the time (his bestie in IDW !!!!) who is clearly a brighter and cheerful iteration of the character which is cool to see, and also he seems to be going along well with a lot of chars too: playing Arcade with Firestar and Jazz (and his double chilling watching them play from above lol). Another Sides was seen happily high-fiving another miner in that same scene, which was really cute.

(I like to interpret this as the filmmakers cramming as many Sideswipe interactions in one scene so they're actually the same character just overlapping one another due to time constraint lmao)

It's nice to see how these characters are before the war traumatized them all and destroyed everything 😩💔

The twins aren‘t on the same squad

I replayed the scene where we first see Elita‘s squadron in action multiple times and slowed it down and I still couldn‘t spot Sunny on the team at all. Then again maybe the miners rotate so they just happen to not be on the same one that day, but it opens the possibility that they might also be intentionally kept apart for some reason. Idk it just opens so many narrative possibilities!! :))

you can actually see Sunstreaker (blink-and-you-miss-it) later on during the mining scene nearby but he's clearly not part of this particular team, working on other stuff like digging the whole and inspecting it.

Which leads me to another point I've been particularly obsessed with...

Sunstreaker is one of the stronger/tougher miners

It might just be the way he walked (calm, heavy and self-assured), if you pay attention closely, most of the bots have a distinct way of walking (especially our 4 main characters). But I hope it's because someone in the TF1 team also remembers how Sunstreaker was supposed to have "tough polymer-steel skin that resists artillery". I always love when they categorize him as a tank bc of this, like in the china-exclusive FPS game Transformers Online (if only we could play it too...🥲), and whenever they bring it up in fics haha. Sides is more agile, rash and risk-taking while Sunny is tankier and covers for him...*chef's kiss*

But what I'm really trying to get at, is that this might be the reason why despite his poor personality, they still kept him around as a miner bc he's strong and he can handle the more dangerous and physically demanding areas that might overwhelm bots with insufficient durability.

It's the way Sideswipe is clearly doing alright and is slowly moving up the ranks while his brother is lagging behind. What about day-to-day life? Their rations? Does he put up with Sunstreaker despite him being an asshole or is he already used to it?

There's sooo many routes to go for once this enters the big picture, and the dynamic between the twins can vary heavily depending on the direction of the story...I won't say too much bc I really want to flesh this out more in my fic (yall pls scream at me omg i need to finish it asap), but all I'll say is that they can never escape the brotherly angst LOL

I just hope they have a happier ending than in IDW...;;

I like to think that the personalities they show here is proof of how young they all still are here, and as the war goes on, you see more of their familiar, battle-hardened personalities make their appearance.

Exercises for all the homies who want to have a long career drawing.

The true problem with being an artist and drawing all day (as I wanted my whole life) is that human backs are not designed to hold that position, so it is very common for artists and designers to have really stiff shoulder blades, creating a chain of muscle strain towards the arm AND the back… and a lot of pain.

These are some physical exercises for artists and honestly anyone who works at a desk.
