i have to break the rules a little bit because i tend to alternate paragraphs and one liners, and one liners don't make for good context. also, i just really like the latest three paragraphs. i've already shown an excerpt from my amaram/kaladin fic, so here's an excerpt from my renarin au fic, fragments of a finch:

A fourth painted window forms and it shows Renarin’s father on the floor, kneeling. His head is thrown backwards and something leaves through his mouth, nose, and eyes. It looks like soot and fire. His hands are limp at his feet, his face haunted as this fire leaves him. Renarin was always told that Alethi warriors feel this mythological force called the Thrill — and that it lights a fire beneath your feet and behind your heels and that it urges you on. “He’ll stop fighting?” Renarin’s father loves to fight. It’s the only thing he gets satisfaction from. Renarin’s chest hurts. “No, no — he can’t stop fighting, then he’ll be miserable all the time, I can’t—” Renarin wakes up.
