My So Weird 2.1 Project

Here is my idea for a So Weird revival show. I tried my best to keep in the spirit of the original show while also making it’s own show that can stand on it’s own. I will say I am really bad supernatural elements so in some the episode summaries are pretty lacking, but in your mind just assume something weird/unexplainable in fact did happen.

I picked out the actors before writing this up and I’ll be honest some no longer “fit” how I imagine the characters to be for various reasons, still I shall include it. Finally I tried to think of original actors that might be willing to do it again, though who really knows LOL. Regardless it’s all a bit of fun!

Summary

Photographer Jack Phillips with his wife pop singer Annie Thelen live in Los Angeles California. The couple has a 13 year old son named Kevin and twins Kathleen and Kennedy aged 11. Because of the nature of both their jobs the couple has to travel fairly frequently. Jack tries to book photography assignments that align with Annie's various tours. When they can the children are brought along, in the instances in which it is not possible the children stay with his mother Molly Phillips, her boyfriend Carey Bell, and their 19 year old daughter Emily. Jack along with Annie often visit or are visited by his best friend Clu Bell, his wife Scarlet and their five children. Though with Clu and his family living in Australia where he runs a surfing company its difficult to find time for the visits. Annie is best friends with Isabella White who works as her personal assistant. Her husband Gregory is good friends with Jack as well. Gregory and Isabella have Jackson 14 and Olive who is 11. Its a hectic but fulfilling life.

Then everything turns on it's head when Jack receives a panicked phone call from his younger sister's,(Fiona) boyfriend James McDonald saying she is gone. Jack soon learns that Fiona, after investigating a so-called paranormal occurrence, has gone missing. James pleads with Jack to look for her, saying it is his destiny and fate to find her, protect her. Having washed his hands of her fantasies and almost her, with the exception of holidays Jack at first refuses.

Annie who herself for a few years in her teenage years had a passing interest in the paranormal herself tells Jack that they have to find Fiona. It'll be difficult road with many mysteries and things Jack has always been unwilling to see, but to save his sister it's time to open his eyes. Jack questions Annie how she knows this, but like many things she can't explain and to just trust her.

Though her management team at first is angry at the decision Annie tells them she is doing a small intimate tour across the United States and and will be traveling in a bus. They don't preplan the venues, only give a few days' warning and often playing in small, almost hole in the wall locations. The stops are decided by Annie's gut reactions and more often than not there are signs Fiona had just been there or has something connected to her.

Jack and Annie bring their three children along with them and hire Gregory to drive the tour bus. Isabella and the kids come as well. Its a crowded environment but somehow they make it work.

After a few weeks of not finding Fiona, Molly decides she too wants to be out there looking for her, having also lost her husband years ago to mysterious circumstances. Annie arranges for Molly to be the opening act on her tour, even though Molly at this point was pretty much retired. Carey and Emily come along as well, with him serving as lead guitarist to Molly as he did years ago.

Jack and Annie also ask for Ned Bell to come along and serve as a tutor for the children, wanting a hands on approach for their education and not strictly computer based. Ned, Molly, Carey, and Emily travel and stay on a second bus throughout the tour, that Ned drives. They told him they'd hire someone but he insisted and refused to take payment for it.

Fiona and James also have a 3 year old son named Phillip. James stays at home, along with Phillip, in case Fiona returns and does what he can from his end.

---- Character personality traits / notes

Jack: Serious. Stubborn. Willing to listen to others. Dedicated husband and father. Logical. Very similar to the Jack seen in the 1999-200 iteration but a bit more forthright on not believing the weird occurrences.

Annie: Hard working. Outgoing. Embraces the world around her. Finds beauty/joy in everything. Very attuned to things, often unexplained. Loving wife and mother.

Kevin: Hockey fan. Loves to pester the twins. Talented guitarist, interested in becoming a musician one day like his mom (and grandparents). Embraces the weird stuff but doesn't care to dive into the deeper meanings of why or how.

Kathleen: Enjoys photography like their dad. Excels in school and loves learning. Gets frustrated at others, especially their twin, when they discuss or point out weird occurrences. Has had a few strange things happen to them, but stubbornly ignores.

Kennedy: Very close to her aunt Fiona. Full blown believer in the weird. Has a dedicated social media accounts to share her beliefs and have others share theirs. Which includes a YouTube channel that does fairly well. Constantly worries the adults around her.

Gregory: Very outgoing. Loves to cook, especially bbq.

Isabella: A bit shy. Very dedicated to her job and client/best friend.

Jackson: Best friends with Kevin. Talented at sports. Bit of a jokester and likes to play pranks on people.

Olive: Wants to be a pop singer and idolizes Annie. Has a habit of stretching the truth. Gets along equally with both of the twins.

Carey: Very much go with the flow type. Played with a few bands after Molly stopped touring/performing but none of them ever had any mentionable success. Took up woodworking and diy projects.

Molly: Dedicated and protective towards her children, grandchildren, and boyfriend. Doesn't take crap from anyone especially when it comes to her relationship with Carey. She grew tired of being the well behaved don't make the record executives angry type of client and started following her heart. Now twenty years into the relationship hardly anyone cares anymore though. With the help of her daughters she slowly started opening up to perhaps there is something special about her and her connection to the unseen, much to Jack's frustration.

Emily: Loves things like tarot, zodiacs, psychic readings, and similar things. Very entuned to nature and animals, is a vegan. However doesn't believe in aliens or mythical supernatural creatures like bigfoot. Does freelance writing time to time. Is also a very talented painter.

Ned: Outgoing. A bit lonely after his divorce with Irene. He accepted and supported Carey's relationship with Molly, while she refused and it created a wedge between them. Works as a substitute teacher from time to time. Bought a boat and can be found out on the water nearly every weekend.

Episode Summaries

EP1: Pilot There is tension between Jack and Annie because he thinks this road trip/tour is a waste of time. At a fuel stop Jack sees a deer standing in a nearby field and takes a picture of it in his digital camera, when he views the image in the preview window the deer is not there, but instead Fiona of when she was about three years old. Gregory and Isabella have to deal with Jackson flooding the bathroom on the bus. Meanwhile Kendall live streams while her mom is doing her show and gets into an argument with a viewer about aliens.

EP2: Welcome To Our Memories They make a stop in Hope Springs to visit for a day. Emily insists on giving all the children a tarot reading. Kathleen is told a big change is coming for them, finding all this rubbish they ignore it. The gang looks through photo albums and home videos. Kevin asks if he can have his grandfather’s old guitar. Four new people join the road trip/tour when Molly expresses being tired of sitting around while her daughter is missing.

EP3: Journey Down A Path Unseen Jack has an awkward and tense encounter with his former girlfriend Gabe who promised Fiona ten years ago to come to this certain hotel at this time and date. She gives him a sealed envelope containing a note of bunch of seemingly random symbols. Olive and Kennedy sneak into a local party after Kennedy learned via social media the location is haunted. While at the party Olive gets drunk. EP4: My Sister's Guardian Kevin witness Kathleen getting harassed for the way they dress and style their hair and he gets into a fight with the teenagers doing the harassment, in the scuffle he breaks his wrist. Annie and Isabella have a night out on the town.

EP5: Gemini Storms The twins celebrate their 12th birthday. And end up getting into a huge fight. Emily gets mad at Carey after he finds out she's been chatting with an older guy, she questions why he was allowed (and still has) a relationship with someone who is older and she can't. Tad surprises the gang with a visit.

EP6: Tangled Threads James calls in a panic saying now Phillip is missing too. Molly and Jack take a flight to help in the search. Kathleen has a dream in which they are standing in a white room with their grandfather Rick who whispers follow me and walks seemingly through a wall. Kennedy get jealous when some girls flirt with Jackson. Carey helps Kevin practice his guitar playing after having his brace removed.

EP7: 2:39 AM Phillip is located in a park at 2:39 am. When asked how he got there or for details he states he can't remember anything. Elsewhere at the same time Gregory is rushed to the ER with appendicitis. Leaving the group stuck in this small town for a while, Kennedy soon figures out its famous for UFO sightings and abductions. Emily decides to give a few psychic readings and do some memory regression sessions on a few of the local residents to figure out what's really happening. Almost all of them mention seeing a door with 239 marked on it. Molly and Jack return to the group. Molly mentions that she received the knock on the door informing her of Rick's death at 2:39.

EP10: Shadow Melodies Annie wakes up with a melody stuck in her head that almost becomes deafening and nothing she tries can get it out. Kathleen doesn't know what to do when the boys arrange a fishing trip while the girls all get together for an all day spa excursion. Clu video chats with the gang. They receive sad news when they learn Molly’s father Collin has died.

EP11: One Moment After At Collin's funeral Jack is nearly blinded with hatred towards his sister for not being present at such a crucial event. He announces after the service that he's done and he's flying back home. He lets the kids decide what they want to do. Kathleen is the only one who asks to come with him. Annie tries to get Jack to stay going back to her reasonings as to why it's his destiny to find Fiona. He refuses to listen and still boards the flight. During the flight there is severe turbulence and the plane loses power. When the power comes back Kathleen is missing.

EP12: Brave Ruler Friend Of Horses Kathleen finds themselves in the same white dream from a few months ago. They find both their grandfather's and great grandfather sitting at a table with an empty chair. Nervous Kathleen decides to take a seat with them. Grandfather Rick tells them their the one. Grandfather Kevin tells them not to be scared and they are never alone. While Collin tells them about not to hide from the truth the same way as he has when it came to what their family has been for generations. Still confused, Kathleen questions what exactly they mean and states perhaps all this is meant for Kennedy. The men tell them no. Rick gives one last piece of information 'to follow their heart on all things' and suddenly finds themselves back on the plane where Jack and the flight attendants are very confused but relived. Kathleen announces they are changing their name to Quinn. And tells their dad that once the plane lands they are going back.

Other notes and head canons. Jack and Fiona had a falling out because she got into the paranormal after promising to leave it alone. This time harder than ever. He felt she was obsessed, almost addicted to it. And watching her on this path became too much for him; so he started distancing himself from her.

Jack and Molly were distant for a while as well, him not being accepting of her relationship with Carey, it wasn’t until he became a father himself did he start to heal their relationship.

James is the same James from the original run of the show Tulpa/PK.

When it comes to the differences of Kennedy and Kathleen/Quinn; Kennedy thinks/wants to have the connection to the paranormal, even the scary elements while in reality nothing ever noteworthy happens to her. While Kathleen/Quinn doesn’t care, almost hates it but yet everything odd happens to them the paranormal is connected to them. As I told my husband … it’s like your parents being famous and talented oil painters and you desperately want to have the same talent so you study for years but are just ok; then your sibling has never expressed interest one day picks up a brush and is a prodigy at it.

Though in the episode summaries I don’t mention the White family a lot they are important to the show, much like how the Bells were important in the original So Weird.

As seen in the summary of episode 12 Annie’s father has passed away at the point and her and Jack do name their son after him.

Meet Kelsea’s Family!

Time to know about some of Kelsea’s family...well, the relatives that will appear, anyway.

Molly Culver: Kelsea’s mother, she works as a manager at Target’s Biddeford location. Encourages her kid to try their best and does her best to understand their hobbies.

Jonathan Culver: Kelsea’s father, he is a Social Worker for Special Needs students in the school district. Tends to rush to his kids’ defense if he needs to, since he can get to the school in seemingly no time at all.

Isabella Culver: Kelsea’s older sister, she is a high school Sophomore. Is part of her school’s LGBT+ Alliance club. Has a girlfriend named Liv, who gets along quite well with her parents.

Chris Hale Sr.: Kelsea’s maternal grandpa, he works as a mechanic. Has a rather pale complexion due to having Porphyria Cutanea Tarda.

Eliza Hale: Kelsea’s maternal grandma, she is a nurse at Southern Maine Health Care’s Biddeford hospital campus. Technically, she is Kelsea’s stepgrandma, but is legally her grandmother due to her adopting Molly and Molly’s sister in 2003.

Isaac Hale: Kelsea’s great grandpa, he is Chris Sr.’s father. He used to work at a company known as Cyro, retiring in 2010. Has not remarried since his late wife May passed away in 1987.

Emily Beauchamp: Kelsea’s aunt, she is a teacher at Waban, a facility for special needs individuals, working in their preschool program. Also has a pale complexion, but it’s due to not spending much time outside after her father’s Porphyria diagnosis.

Eric Beauchamp: Kelsea’s uncle, he is a musician. His band is called Cosette, after the Les Miserables character of the same name. Prior to his band making it big, he was a Nurse. Tends not to show up to school open houses due to a past incident where parents kept asking him for autographs.

Grace Culver: Kelsea’s other aunt, she is a cosmetologist. Trying to get over the loss of her mother, who lost her battle with Pancreatic Cancer shortly before the start of Kelsea’s story.

Cain Culver: Kelsea’s other uncle, he is a tattoo artist. Is rather shy due to his name, which is associated with the person in the Bible.

Courtney Culver: Grace and Cain’s oldest daughter, she is a high school Freshman. Her so-called worst subject is Math while her best is History. Her big project is on South Korea, focusing on some historical events and current pop culture trends in the country.

Paris Culver: Grace and Cain’s youngest daughter, she is a 6th grader at the same school as Kelsea. Is short for her age, being 4 feet 7 inches tall, likely due to her being born 3 months early.

Chris Hale Jr.: Kelsea’s uncle, they are in some of the same classes at Sanford Middle School. Born three months before his youngest niece. Has more of a Filipino appearance.

Destiny Aquino: Eliza’s biological daughter, she is a cosmetologist. Was born three and a half months before Emily, but they get along like they were born together.

During last year’s Christmas break, which happened to be just days after the What a Character! Blogathon, I settled in to watch episodes of The Gertrude Berg Show and found myself laughing aloud. A lot. The Berg Show, which was originally titled Mrs. G Goes to College, is about a widow who goes to college after her children are grown. The situation comedy, which only lasted from 1961 to 1962, also featured the goings on in the building where Sarah Green lives. Green (aka Mrs. G), played by the talented Gertrude Berg, has daily exchanges with Cedric Hardwicke who plays Professor Crayton, another tenant in the building, and landlady Winona Maxfield played by Mary Wickes. By the end of the first episode of The Gertrude Berg Show, I’d decided who my actor of choice would be for this year’s What a Character! Blogathon.

Mary Wickes was born Mary Isabella Wickenhauser in St. Louis, Missouri on June 13, 1910. Mary was the only child of doting parents, Frank and Isabella Wickenhauser. Her upbringing was one of homespun values in a well-to-do household. Mary described her parents as civic-minded people who loved people, which resulted in Mary’s interests outside of acting. She remained close to her parents always.

On April 12, 1988, Mary Wickes returned to her alma mater, Washington University in St. Louis to deliver a speech in honor of a close friend and former dean. In the speech Mary talked about the importance of her “bedrock values” and about her career. “I am very proud of my profession, ” she said, “I am proud of the tradition and I can’t imagine doing anything but being an actress.”

If you can tell anything from watching Mary Wickes’ work it’s that she enjoyed doing it. That enjoyment coupled with her talent made her one of Hollywood’s most accomplished character actors. Interestingly, her story is not one of those where the entertainer dreamed of entertaining from an early age. Wickes recalled in the Washington U. speech that her parents loved the theater and that she was taken to see shows since she was very young. Mary went on to say that her reaction to watching shows was rather strange, “If anything was terribly funny, or just wonderful – the leading lady wore beautiful evening clothes and the scene just went so beautifully – I would cry.” Clearly, she was moved, but it still never occurred to her that she would become an actor at that early age. Her interests were varied. She majored in Political Science and joined every club imaginable including the debate team, which she enjoyed immensely. It wasn’t until her junior year that acting became a possibility when one of her professors suggested she go to an open audition at a local theater. Mary auditioned and got the part and at the end of the production, the director asked Mary to join his summer theater troupe to see how she would stack up opposite professional actors. He also suggested she might want to change her name because Mary Isabella Wickenhauser would not likely fit on a marquee. The task of figuring out what she wanted her stage name to be proved one of the few she would ever fail at. She simply couldn’t think of one. But when the publicity materials for her first play had to be printed Wickenhauser received a wire that read, “Your name will be Mary Wickes for the season.” And it stayed that way forever.

Mary Wickes went on to appear in over 200 productions in summer stock and regional theater. Her love of the stage lasted her entire career and she would travel to New York between movies for decades. Through the years she dazzled audiences in revivals of “The Wizard of Oz” wherein she played Miss Gulch/The Wicked Witch of the West, “Damn Yankees,” “Arsenic and Old Lace,” and “Oklahoma!” – all of which I would have killed to see.

While we’ve come to recognize Mary Wickes simply by the types of characters she played in movies and television, her stage credits demonstrate quite the acting range. She was prone to playing comedic roles that demanded more than the occasional deadpan delivery she excelled at. Orson Welles thought so too as he recruited her to be part of his famed The Mercury Theatre and cast her in his production of “Too Much Johnson” in 1938. A few years ago footage previously thought lost was discovered of this production to include prologues. I would love to get a look at that too.

Mary’s entrance onto The Great White Way was as smooth as her start as an actor. Wickes was in New York for less than a week in 1934 when she secured a part as understudy to Margaret Hamilton in “The Farmer Takes a Wife” starring Henry Fonda. As Steve Taravella explains in his fantastic 2016 biography, Mary Wickes: I Know I’ve Seen That Face Before, “The Farmer Takes a Wife” tried out in Philadelphia where Mary was asked to go on for Margaret Hamilton for the first matinée. That usually happens only once in…pretty much never. It was most certainly a sign as the Variety critic happened to attend that very performance and opined that Mary Wickes was “more than okay.”

Among her other notable Broadway shows are Philip Barry’s “Spring Dance” and Kaufman and Edna Ferber‘s “Stage Door,” the first of five Kaufman plays in which she originated parts and her first Broadway hit. Kaufman later called her his favorite comedienne. Mary Wickes adored working with George S. Kaufman and would forge a life-long friendship with the Kaufman family.

Mary’s signature stage role was in the original Broadway production of the Moss Hart-George S. Kaufman comedy, “The Man Who Came to Dinner” in 1939. She played the nurse, Miss Preen in hilarious fashion opposite the show’s star, Monty Woolley. She and Woolley reprised their roles in William Keighley’s film version in 1942. In 1972, Mary played Miss Preen again in a TV version directed by Buzz Kulik. Orson Welles played Sheridan Whiteside (the Woolley role) in that production.

Steve Taravella dedicates an entire chapter of his Wickes biography to Miss Preen, also known as “Miss Bedpan.” He explains how the success of the show, which ran for more than 700 performances, facilitated Broadway connections that helped Mary her entire career. And of course Miss Preen also cemented one of her signature character roles – the scene-stealing nurse. The movie version of The Man Who Came to Dinner was as successful as the play and it resulted in Mary becoming a favorite of directors, co-stars and audiences. And all because of a relatively small part opposite major screen gravitas also known as Bette Davis with whom Mary made three pictures. Given the popularity of Miss Preen it’s no wonder Mary Wickes was asked to bring other nurses to life on screen with the most popular example in our circles being nurse Dora Pickford in Irving Rapper’s Now, Voyager (1942). Mary’s depiction of Dora is particularly important because she provides the only comic relief in an otherwise very serious movie. Anyone familiar with Now, Voyager has probably recognized that making people smile playing opposite Gladys Cooper‘s Mrs. Vale could not have been an easy task.

If one is to describe Mary Wickes’ overall specialty it was playing the prim, sarcastic woman who looked down her nose at those who failed to meet her standards. Her characters were either professional women like secretaries (and nurses) or smart-alecky commoners, which brings me to yet another of her staples – the housekeeper. The movies that come to mind where she plays a domestic are Roy Del Ruth’s On Moonlight Bay (1951) and its sequel, David Butler’s By the Light of the Silvery Moon (1953). These delightful family musicals feature Leon Ames, Rosemary De Camp, Billy Gray and Doris Day who make up the Winfield family and Mary Wickes as their maid, Stella. Gordon MacRae also stars in both as William Sherman who falls in love with Doris’ Marjorie. You must take a look at the trailer for By the Light of the Silvery Moon because it features Mary as Stella breaking the fourth wall to explain the movie’s plot. These movies are as sweet as candy and I absolutely love the cast, but it’s Wickes I look most forward to even though her friend George S. Kaufman had written her from New York urging her to return to do stage work. Of On Moonlight Bay Mr. Kaufman said, “you’re too good for that sort of thing.” That’s probably true, but it’s what we have of Mary Wickes and if Kaufman doesn’t mind I will celebrate it by mentioning one of my favorite lines in either movie, which comes early in On Moonlight Bay. Stella is complaining to Mr. Winfield that the kitchen is too big and it tires her out so in pure Wickes style she says, “I’m bein’ paid to be a cook, not a cross-country runner!”

I think of Mary Wickes’ movie career as made up of many special moments as is the case with many of our favorite character actors. After all these actors didn’t star in their own movies. And like the best of ’em Mary had a lot stored in her talent cannon. For instance, her physical prowess was unique. She said a lot with her eyes, used her hands beautifully to emphasize eccentricity and her lanky frame allowed for more than a few memorable slapstick moments on film. It was her timing, however, that made her a standout like Eve Arden, Thelma Ritter and a few other top-notch actors of the supporting kind. If you want to check out a few of Mary Wickes’ other movies, you might try Edward Cline’s fun put-on-a-show Private Buckaroo (1942) or Erle C. Kenton’s Who Done It? (1942) with Abbott and Costello. Then there’s Michael Curtiz’s White Christmas (1954) in which she plays housekeeper Emma, one of her most enduring roles. She portrayed another Emma in George Cukor’s The Actress (1953) and you might also like her portrayal of “Pick-a-little lady” in Morton DaCosta’s The Music Man (1962). And…and…there are simply too many.

If none of those make you slap happy you can also enjoy another of Mary’s famous on-screen depictions – the nun – in Ida Lupino’s The Trouble with Angels (1966) and its sequel, James Neilson’s Where Angels Go Trouble Follows! (1968), both starring Rosalind Russell. I assure you Mary’s religious types are as fun as her nurses and maids. Three decades after the movies with Russell in which she played Sister Clarissa Mary enjoyed a career resurgence as Sister Mary Lazarus in the hugely popular Sister Act (1992) and its sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993). By that point Wicks was in the seventh decade of her career and her timing was still on target.

The more mature Mary Wickes also portrayed the cranky old relative role to perfection. She did so in Mike Nichols’��Postcards from the Edge (1990), which broke a dry spell for the veteran actor who hadn’t been offered feature parts for quite some time. Mary’s work on television never ceased, but movie parts were few and far between after her appearance in the Angels movies. It’s nice to know that the 1990s were good to her. Following Edge and the Sister Act movies she played Aunt March in Gillian Armstrong’s Little Women (1994). Her final movie performance was as the voice of the gargoyle Laverne in the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) and her final performance on television was as the voice of Grandma in the animated series Life with Louie.

I’ve left the discussion of Mary Wickes’ career on television for last because it’s how I first met her. Also, it brings this full circle since I began this Wickes journey with a mention of The Gertrude Berg Show, which is highly recommended. Mary received her only award nomination for Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role by an Actress for her work in that show. She didn’t win the award, but she makes me laugh like all heck and so she has my heart. Her reactions and comebacks are priceless at every turn.

Mary made her acting television debut as Mary Poppins in a 1949 episode of the anthology series, Studio One in Hollywood. Yes, she was the original Poppins anywhere at any time!

From then on Wickes’ TV roles never stopped. She was a regular on such notables as Make Room for Daddy, Zorro, Julia, The Jimmy Stewart Show, Doc and Father Dowling Mysteries. She also had a recurring role on Dennis the Menace, which I’ve been watching lately and in which Mary Wickes is a hoot. Mary plays Miss Esther Cathcart, a single woman out to get a man at all costs. Miss Cathcart often uses Dennis in her schemes to hilarious effect. So far my favorite moments on the show are when Miss Cathhart sings, which she does to impress, but which results in broken mirrors, barking dogs and the like. If you have an extra moment be sure to check out Miss Cathcart’s rendition of “Love’s Old Sweet Song.” She really had such ease with comedy and clearly did anything asked of her with aplomb.

As a guest Mary Wickes appeared in every type of show imaginable from variety to mystery to everything in between. I can only mention a few standouts. When Gloria Swanson kicked off her The Gloria Swanson Hour she asked Mary Wickes to be her very first guest. Mary also guested on two episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents in 1956, the first of which, “The Baby Sitter,” directed by Robert Stevens is quite special. The episode stars Thelma Ritter as a baby sitter who gets involved in a murder. I wouldn’t say the story here is particularly noteworthy, but watching two of the premier character actors of the last century together is a thrill for film geeks like me, not to mention appropriate for this blogathon event. It’s Ritter and Wickes for crissakes.

One of my favorite of Mary Wickes’ TV guest spots was her small but hilarious part as the second murder victim’s landlady in Columbo “Suitable for Framing.” Her exchange with the Lt. alone is worth several admission prices. In this episode Wickes’ talent for playing characters that danced to their own beat so they easily carry on their own conversations despite who else might have been talking to them is in full bloom. If that sentence didn’t make sense, then good. This picture says it all…

I have to stop talking about Ms. Wickes at some point so it might as well be with a mention of Mary and Lucy. As most of you probably know Lucille Ball and Mary Wickes were close friends. Among Mary’s effects at Washington University are several letters from Lucy and Lucie Arnaz refers to Mary as family. I get a bit of the chills thinking about the two legendary comediennes laughing together behind the scenes, telling each other secrets and comforting each other as friends do.

Lucy and Mary were also frequent co-stars. Everyone remembers the classic first season episode of I Love Lucy, “The Ballet” with Mary playing the part of a ballet teacher, Madame Lamond. The episode begins in familiar fashion – Ricky is working on a show and needs a ballet dancer and Lucy tries to convince him she is a ballet dancer. In order to hone her skills Lucy goes to see Madame Lamond, the French premiere ballerina who is staging Ricky’s number. Lucy also tells Madame Lamond that she’s experienced. You know how well that turns out. But the important thing are the laughs and there are plenty of them here thanks to Lucy’s hijinks and Mary’s unforgettable reactions and her affected French accent.

Mary only appeared in that one episode of I Love Lucy, but she appeared regularly in both of Lucille’s subsequent shows, The Lucy Show and Here’s Lucy. Wickes made a total of seventeen appearances on both shows always as different characters. You’ll be happy to know that a few were nurses, a few were maids, a few were nuns and one was named Mrs. Wickenhauser.

Mary Wickes knew that she excelled at comedy, which she called “very serious business.” And she loved what she did, which makes her story a particularly happy one. There were times when the going was a bit tougher than other times, but she worked most of her career because her talent was recognized as indispensable. When Mary gave her speech at Washington University she was 77 years old and ended the speech by paraphrasing St. Augustine in charming and endearing fashion. She said, “He said, ‘give me chastity and continence, O Lord, but not yet.’ And me – ‘I want rest, retirement, and quiet, O Lord, but not yet. And maybe never.”’

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967)

This movie is about an interracial couple (Katharine Houghton and Sidney Portier). The woman who is white brings her black boyfriend home to meet her parents (Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn).

Some notes about how this movie fits into film history will be interesting. Tracy and Hepburn made many movies together of which this is the last one. Tracy was not well during the making of this movie and he died shortly after filming was completed. They were a couple off screen as well although they were never married because Tracy did not want to divorce his wife. During the 50’s and 60’s Portier was the only black leading man making major motion pictures. As a result, he only played good guys.

The couple, Joanna and John, meet in Hawaii, fall in love and become engaged. Her parents, Matt and Christina, are rich white liberals who live in San Francisco. Matt is a newspaper publisher. John is a doctor who plans to work in Africa. John and Joanna want to be married right away as John is flying to Geneva to work for the World Health Organization. They want the approval of her parents. After the initial shock Christina approves but Matt doesn’t. He has no objections to John personally, but he worries about the societal reaction. John complicates matters further by telling Matt and Christina that he will not agree to the marriage unless they both give their unqualified approval. Joanna does not know about this condition though. Later John’s parents arrive and John’s father has the same objection.

This is what I call an actors’ movie. It is mostly people talking with very little action. Most of the scenes take place in Matt and Christina’s house. The acting is first rate; not only the four leads but the supporting cast as well. This includes Beah Richards and Roy Glenn as John’s parents and Isabella Sanford as the maid. The other major role was Cecil Kellaway as a Catholic Monsignor who is Matt and Christina’s best friend. The script by William Rose is very good as well although the plot is predictable.

My only quibble is the plot point that Matt has one day to decide how he feels and the marriage depends on his decision. This is contrived to make the plot more dramatic. I call this movie a dramady. There are a lot of laughs, but the underlining story brings out a serious issue.

Is this plot relevant for today? The language is somewhat anachronistic in that Black people were called Negroes or colored in the 60’s. This was considered normal in those days and not derogatory. Intermarriage between the races is not as controversial today as it was then but it is still an issue among a lot of people. This film is relevant both historically and as it relates to today’s environment.
