...Will in the World is a bestseller, and award-bedecked, and if you wish to learn about England during the life of Shakespeare, itâs not a bad place to start. But in terms of the Bard himself, the book is a house of cards in which every leaning laminated rectangle is printed with the word âmaybe.â
...Waughâs case relies less on doubt about chronology and more on what he believes to be coded references to Shakespeare being Oxford. These tend toward Dan Brown territory very quickly. According to Waugh, if you look at the famous portrait of Shakespeare in the First Folio, you will see a âbright light on the forehead and the great rays coming out from his collar,â which must be references to the âgreat Phoebus-Apollo, the patron god, hiding behind the mask of a player.â That patron must be Oxford because he was often referred to as Apollo.Â

A Golden BoyâŚa TRUE American Hero.
Adam McKayâs DEATH ON THE LOT podcast, episode 3 features John Garfield unjust framing by HUAC.
The guests on the podcast are ALL the people I would have selected to interview: daughter, actor and artist, Julie Garfield; authors, Robert Nott and Isaac Butler, and also a surpriseâactor, Lee Grant one of the few remaining to be blacklisted in Hollywood in the 50âs. Excellent commentary by all. Good on you, Adam McKay and team!
The Red-Baiting of a Golden Boy | Episode 3 | A new generation of actors questioned the status quo; a rattled establishment fought back; dire consequences ensued. Weâre talking John Garfield, Hollywoodâs first method actor. LISTEN
"When I was originally requested to appear before the committee, I said that I would answer all questions, fully and without any reservations, and that is what I have done. I have nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to hide. My life is an open book. I was glad to appear before you and talk with you. I am no Red. I am no pink. I am no fellow traveler. I am a Democrat by politics, a liberal by inclination, and a loyal citizen of this country by every act of my life.â
âJohn Garfieldâs statement before House Un-American Activites Committee (HUAC) on April 23, 1951.
All Julie wanted to do was what he did best: ACT. They took everything away from him. Despite that, he held his street cred. He gave away not a single name during his testimony. No ratting on friends and associates from Julie. Badass.
The others involved: Shameful. Shocking that Julieâs life and livelihood could be toyed with so heartlessly and carelessly. This was a man who did so much for his country. How could the ruthless, power hungry politicians ignore these examples of John Garfieldâs patriotism?
During WWII, he cofoundedâafter bringing the suggestion to Bette Davisâthe Hollywood Canteen. The Canteen operated from October 3, 1942 through November 22, 1945 (Thanksgiving Day), as a club offering free of charge: food, dancing and entertainment for service personnel usually on their way overseas. Nearly four million people were served as they were serving us!
The Hollywood Victory Caravan included Eddie Dowling, President of Camp Shows, Ray Bolger, Mitzi Mayfair, Louis Polanski, Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Jane Pickens, Benay Venuta, and John Garfield serving as master of ceremonies. One of the first USO tours, Flying Showboat revue toured U.S. military bases in the Caribbean. These celebrities performed under some extremely trying conditions, as the weather was brutally hot and many of the camps were not equipped to host theatrical performances. The show must go on (!) and it did.
Julie running an event at the Canteen.
Julie entertains the troops! Audience members at the Canteen filled the hall.
Here he is selling War Bonds to support WWII efforts with Humphrey Bogart in 1943. Not sure who is pictured with them.
Julie championed the story of real life marine hero, Al Schmid bringing it to the screen in PRIDE OF THE MARINES. He read about the hero in LIFE magazine and brought the idea for a film to the studio. He stayed with Sargent Schmid and his wife for a couple weeks to portray the man respectfully and honesty.

9 People Youâd Like to Know More

Tumblr keeps eating every draft of this post that I write, argh!Â
Last Song I Listened To
When I started writing this, I was being lazy and letting the YouTube algorithm pick songs for me and I was listening to this song, Unfucktheworld by Angel Olsen. I've been exchanging song recommendations with a friend for a while now and I guess she has gotten to know me pretty well because this is way up my alley.
youtube
But then another song came on--We Ride by Brave Girls (a.k.a. BB Girls)--and that became the new last song I listened to. It's another song that a friend recommended to me. This time it was a friend I've been emailing with back and forth about East Asian pop music. He's a big fan of City Pop, a genre that came out of Japan in the 80s, and he sent me a list of some recent kpop songs that are influenced by/reminiscent of City Pop, including this one. I took to it right away, and it was a big hit with my daughter.Â

Currently Watching
I Told Sunset About You - Iâm just one episode in to this one and I can already tell itâs going to hit me where it hurts. I took a break due to family visits and related stuff but Iâm fixing to dive back in.Â
Moonlight Chicken - I got stalled out on this one just as it was getting good, thanks to some life stuff. I need to pick it back up!
Star Trek: Discovery - Iâm a big Star Trek fan and recently rewatched everything from TNG through Voyager, but I hadnât kept up with any of the newest series in years. Iâm so glad I decided to start Discovery because it is shaping up to be one of my favorite Star Trek series. There are a lot of reasons for this. Really great LGBT+ representation is a factor. This is also is the first Star Trek series that has inspired more actor crushes in me than DS9. Michelle Yeoh in a corset! Tig Notaro as a cranky engineer! Iâm dying over here.Â
Minato's Laundromat season 2 - I was looking forward to this as soon as it was announced, but with the usual anxiety that comes with a second season of a BL. I wasnât 100% sure about the direction of the season at first, but now itâs settling in with some really interesting themes.Â
Reservation Dogs - I wasnât entirely sure about this show when I first started watching during the first season. But not only did it grow on me, it has also been getting better and better. The latest episode, which focused in part on an abusive government-sponsored boarding school (of the sort designed to rob Indigenous kids of their culture), was one of the best of the series so far.Â
Edited to add: I forgot about Kamen Rider Geats! My family has been catching up on it and we're almost caught up just in time for the finale. I'm liking it a lot more than I thought I would when I watched the first few episodes, but not as much as my partner (who said he thinks it's one of his favorite Kamen Rider series he's seen). I'm really impressed with the cast, though. I'd especially like to see the actors who play Keiwa and Buffa in more things in the future.
Currently Reading
Iâve been listening to the audiobook version of The Method: How the Twentieth Century Learned to Act by Isaac Butler for a while now, but Iâm having an annoying situation where it keeps getting returned to the library even though Iâve renewed it. I could just start another book, but I donât want to! This one is really interesting.Â
The vast majority of people spend a significant amount of their time watching (non-documentary) movies and TV series, which involves watching actors engage in this specific art form. And we have opinions about what constitutes good or bad acting. Yet most of us know so little about how acting is done, what kinds of theories underpin acting practice, how actors prepare for roles and scenes. I wanted to not only find out more about that, but also dig a little deeper into the differences between approaches and how theyâve branched off and clashed and so forth.Â
So far Iâve gotten a lot of good background and plenty to think about, even though Iâm just getting to the point where the Method/System/whateveryoucallit is starting to take on in the US. Iâm guessing itâs going to get even more relevant from there.
Current Obsession
Iâm always obsessing about lots of things so Iâm probably never going to be able to identify just one. Some currents ones are:
waiting for Utsukushii Kare: Eternal to be available with English subtitles somewhere, somehow
foraging blackberries, making jelly out of them, and baking biscuits to go with the jelly
waiting for it to be fall already because I hate sweating and I love wearing layers
finding my Animal Crossing character some decent glasses
thinking about possible BL/Jane Austen parallels for tumblr posts
finishing a post about psychological aspects of Utsukushii Kare that Iâve been writing off and on for months and that has gotten so long it will probably have to be split up into 3-4 posts
Serge Lutens Jeux de Peau perfume (my beloved)
I didn't tag anyone. It makes me anxious and I think pretty much everyone I know on here has been tagged! Except @porridgefeast, who's welcome to do it if she feels like it but (of course) no pressure.

Meme-ification covered up the protean quality of Cageâs work, making it appear simultaneously weirder and less interesting, in much the same way that algorithms deliver us songs that sound exactly like songs we already know rather than risk exposing us to the new. For all its lampooning of male ego, âDream Scenarioâ âs real target is the way that the Web has caught us all, has shrunk our complexities into a commodity, something to be briefly loved and then discarded as loathsome when it is no longer useful. Great realistic acting combats this dehumanization by transcending the self and becoming the character, holding out the hope that we can all transcend ourselves, too, if only for a couple of hours. Nicolas Cageâs acting holds out a different hope: that we are all richer and stranger than we might think, or that the world can see.

It's Willfully Stupid to Pretend the Shakespeare Authorship Question Is Resolved
More than meets the eye? In response to the recent publication of Elizabeth Winklerâs lively and thought-provoking Shakespeare Is a Woman and Other Heresies, which is, among other things, a powerful book-length argument for academic freedom in English departments, Slate.com published a review by staff writer Isaac Butler labeling Winklerâs book âShakespeare Trutherismâ and urging a supposedlyâŚ

âWe're talking John Garfield, Hollywood's first method actor. Learn more aboutâŚâ
Where are they doing this talking about Julie? On the podcast, DEATH ON THE LOT, hosted by Adam McKay (The Big Short, Donât Look Up, Vice, Succession).
The first episode featured Isaac Butler author of âThe Method: How the Twentieth Century Learned to Act.â Butler spoke about Julie and the Hollywood studio system and Iâm sure heâll be on for another episode.
I appreciate how Butler constantly puts Julieâs name out there recognizing his film contributions and how he was the earliest to successfully bring Method acting to Hollywood. Hereâs Butlerâs recent insightful article about Julie.
Back to McKayâs podcast which will include bits about Julie. Hereâs a content description: âThis season, we're getting into 1950s Hollywood, ground zero for a cultural transformation that would upend every aspect of Americans' lives. A movie theater in every city, a TV in every living room, and a Post-war America determined to be happy at any cost. Also during this periodâŚ.. a slew of untimely Hollywood deaths.
The rules of the road for the next seventy years were being written in real-time, and not everyone would make it out alive. This is the story of how Hollywood sold us on a new American Dream, and left a few unlucky stars holding the bag.â
