For mafia bad Sanses, how is it worse for Nightmare to like us as opposed to not liking us? Assuming he would kill us if he doesn’t like us.
"you don't get it, do you?"
You looked at Dust, confusion dampening the joy you'd mustered at your encounter with Nightmare going so well. "Huh?"
His voice was low. He wasn't looking at you. "this is so much worse."
"Wait, was... Nightmare lying? Was he being sarcastic?" You thought you did good. You thought you were safe. You'd made Nightmare laugh - surely he wasn't going to kill you now, right?
"no." Dust put a hand to his face. He seemed... shaken. "he was being honest."
"I don't understand. He told me he liked me."
"that's the problem."
Dust was right, you didn't get it. You stared at him, waiting for him to make sense. He was the only skeleton around here you really trusted; the only one who you felt you could speak to freely. Eventually, he let out a short breath from his nasal cavity.
"you can't leave, human. not anymore."
"... Huh?"
"nightmare likes you. he doesn't share. he'll kill to keep the things he likes in his possession." He stared into the middle distance. "there's nowhere in this city he doesn't have his claws in - there's nowhere you can go where he can't follow. he'll already have told the others not to let you get far. and they'll be happy to oblige."
"I..." You felt your stomach slowly but surely dropping.
"nightmare likes you." Dust finally looked down at you. The weight of his gaze was immense. "do you understand, now?"
You felt... sick. You felt really sick. Dust's face, usually so deafeningly impassive, cracked. For just a moment, a crease between his brows; on anyone else, it would've been the faintest and briefest of a facial twitch. But on Dust it was like his whole expression had collapsed into anguish.
You looked away.
"... i'm sorry." His voice was soft. "i tried."
"I-I... can I go home?"
"i don't know."
The honesty in his voice was absolutely terrifying.
"Don't leave me alone here," you said.
"i won't." He took your hand, gently squeezing. "i promise."

I think about how, the captain in season one was this supposed intimidating figure and then later on the seasons he grew soft only to realize he’s ALWAYS BEEN A SOFTIE. BECAUSE HE LOOKED SO OUT OF PLACE FROM ALL THE OTHER VETERANS IN BUTTON HOUSE. HE LOOKED LIKE A FUCKING TEDDY BEAR . IM GONNA CRY. THIS MAN AINT FIT FOR A WAR. HE LOOKED LIKE AN ADORABLE TEDDY BEAR WITH A DAMN MOUSTACHE
WHAT THE HELL. LOOK AT HIM .
