Okay, butâhow does the hunt evolve? How does it get more barbaric than it begins? Because the first hunt, with Natalie, has everyone on equal ground. Everyone is dressed for warmth, everyone has shoes on, itâs very âthis could happen to any of usâ. Itâs fair, if such a thing exists in the wild.
But the opening scene of the pilot? Pit Girl? Sheâs in a flimsy dress. Sheâs barefoot. Sheâs not designed for a sprint to get water, much less for her life. So, how does it escalate? How fucking bad must it get, for the hunters to be dressed in furs and masks, and the prey to be so unprepared for the elements? That doesnât feel like a move theyâd make unless things got so much worse than weâve seen.
#yellowjackets#yj meta#it doesnât feel like a move Natalie would make as Queen especially#which FASCINATES me#like the pits? that feels like nat.#itâs a reasonable escalation to the hunt for actual animals#one or two people with one gun and limited bullets can do much less than traps of that caliber#but the actual Hunt? that girl running in Jackieâs necklace and no protection from the snow?#I am so so curious to find out what THAT is about#are we stripping the girl who pulls the card? putting them in sacrificial white?#is it a laura lee dress??#help I need to know

yall are gonna annoy me to death with your weird Catholic Laura Lee fixation.
Listen. As a New Jersey Catholic(TM) raised around other NJ Catholics, quite a few of them WAAAAY more pious than myself, Laura Lee is not our tribe. She never so much as makes the sign of the cross for fuck's sake. BUT
You know who is Catholic?
Mari.
#that girl is Very Filipino and thus Ver VERY Catholic#why she (aside from Van) is one of Lottie's most devoted acolytes#needs almost no convincing that Lottie is a prophet#that there are god(s) in the wilderness that Lottie can commune (intercede) with#Mari who INSISTS Lottie can perform miracles and earnestly participates in morning prayer#despite being one of the snarkiest and most cynical members of the team#HELLO. CATHOLICISM#that girl is a practicing- still has her communion dress in her closet. abuela insisted she pack a rosary 11am mass every Sunday CATH O LICK#thank u goodnight#Catholics don't do lakeside dunk your whole body in a lake baptisms like Laura Lee did with Lottie#first of all...laypeople don't administer Baptisms at all#BUT EVEN IF laura lee felt so compelled she would've dribbled some water over Lottie's forehead and called it a day#that full body wade in the water schtick? no. walking back into the room shaking my fist in the air AND ANOTHER THING but think about the trinkets lottie finds in the death dream plane, specifically laura lee's necklace! lottie wishes she had this piece of laura lee to hold on to the way shauna has jackie's heart necklace. what lottie needs in order to lay laura lee to rest is a talisman to carry with her, what the others need (through nat) is to be saved by her. jackie saves them. pit girl will save them. lottie mourns the friend she lost, nat mourns the hope for survival that died with her. when the plane took off there was a moment when they all really believed they were going to make it. and then hope burns and dies in them right alongside laura lee. the moose mirrors this bright hope to sudden loss, right down to the whole group running to see its marvel and working together in a way they rarely do (most chores seem to be solitary, drawn by card) to create a path/pull the moose free. in the end laura lee physically pushes lottie out of the death dream saving her, but we know that the spirits of the forest don't seem to give anything without taking, too. a trade for physically pulling nat down beneath the icy water, almost killing her?
have we considered yet that the white moose is laura lee? stay with me for a second. lottie and nat part ways to go on the same journey. maybe they encounter the same specter on the way, shown to each girl in the form she will be most receptive to. when nat put jackie's bones to rest the moose first revealed itself to her. what does a ghost want more than to be acknowledged, and then laid to rest? when she sees it next, it's frozen in the middle of the lake. not unreasonably far from where laura lee would have burned. nat screams and cries after the sinking moose corpse: "no! we need it!" and they do. they can make sense of jackie's vain death because ultimately it saved their lives. laura lee was trying to save them, but her death was completely in vain. it brought them no closer to survival. if they could have her back, if they could eat her to stay alive, her death might mean something too.
#also I hope it doesn't need said but I don't literally mean Laura Lee is trying to murder nat to save lottie#but#the Moose is the Messenger#the evidence of her haunting#bc I think she does haunt the narrative just as much as Jackie#please watch doomcoming back and tell me lottie isn't wearing laura lee's dress that night#she needs a part of her still to exist so bad!!!! but it just doesn't#she has (maybe???) a dress that Laura Lee packed for an awards dinner she never wore and never made it to#it's not her necklace it's not Leonard it's not HER#and it isn't a meal and it isn't faith and it isn't the salvation they all let themselves believe it might be to justify sending her to die#(to justify eating jackie to justify whatever comes next)

dance moms
laura freigang x dancer!reader
summary: after moving back to germany, to escape the chaos you've suffered in the states, you meet a photographer (who happens to be a footballer as well.)
a/n: if you don't know what the american reality show "dance moms" is, I'd do some basic research in order to understand the first part of this fic <3
growing up at the ALDC felt like being in a pressure cooker.Â
you were only two years old when your mom, isla, moved the both of you from germany to pennsylvania in the united states.Â
she put you in dance classes as soon as she could. at first, it was excitingâyou loved the way your body could express emotions through movement. you loved gaining flexibility and having a routine. you loved performing and getting to put on pretty costumes. but that changed the moment dance moms came into the picture.
at just eleven years old, you were pulled into the chaotic world of reality TV. cameras followed your every move, every mistake.Â
abby lee millerâs constant critiques weighed you down, her screaming echoing in your head long after rehearsals ended. she changed since the cameras started filming her.Â
âyouâll never be good enough if you donât push harder, y/n!â sheâd shout during practice, her words biting deep into your skin like needles.
there were moments where you had solos. those were the dances you loved the most. you always scored very well and got on top of the pyramid whenever maddie wasnât.Â
sometime during season four, there was a significant moment that didnât leave your mind for a while.Â
you stood in the wings at a competition in san diego, your chest heaving as you tried to catch your breath after your solo. the adrenaline rushed through your veins, but it was dulled by the sinking feeling in your stomach.Â
youâd stumbled on one of your turnsâsomething that wasnât like you at all. but it was there, clear as day, right in front of the judges and the audience. and now, you were about to face abby.
as soon as they announced the results, you knew it wasnât going to be good.Â
second place. youâd lost to maddie. again. but what made it worse was that you werenât just up against anyoneâthis was a week where you were up against the candy apples. abbyâs biggest rivals.Â
this meant that her mood was already sour, and you knew this was going to tip her over the edge.
the second you stepped into the dressing rooms, abbyâs gaze was already locked on you, her face a storm of frustration and anger.Â
she didnât even wait for everyone to sit down before coming at you.
âsecond place?â abby barked, her voice sharp as a whip. âsecond place, y/n? you know thatâs not acceptable. not here!âÂ
you flinched but kept your head down, your heart racing. you wanted to explainâto say that the stumble was a mistake, something you couldnât controlâbut you knew it wouldnât matter. not to abby.
âwhat happened out there?â she demanded, sitting down in her chair, her arms crossed tightly over her chest.Â
âyou stumbled on a turn, y/n. a turn! something you should be perfect at by now.â
you swallowed hard, your throat dry. âi know, abby. iâm sorry. iâi justââ
âsorry isnât good enough,â abby cut you off, her voice dripping with disappointment. âyou donât get to be sorry when youâre given this great opportunity! maddie wouldâve never done that and her first place showed that!âÂ
the mention of maddie stung more than anything. it always felt like you were in her shadow, no matter how hard you worked. no matter how much you tried to prove yourself.Â
abbyâs golden girl could do no wrong, and you were left picking up the pieces when you didnât measure up.
âyouâre better than that,â abby continued, pacing back and forth in front of you.Â
âyouâre one of my best dancers, but today? you danced like an amateur. you embarrassed me, y/n. you embarrassed this entire team.â
her words hit you like a slap, and you felt tears prickling at the corners of your eyes. you didnât want to cryânot in front of abby, not in front of the other girlsâbut it was hard to hold it in.
âabby, iâmââ
âdonât say youâre sorry again,â she snapped, her voice rising.Â
âi donât want to hear it. i want you to do better. no more mistakes, no more excuses. if you want to be a star, you need to act like one. and today, you didnât.â
you stood there, frozen, trying to keep your emotions in check as abby continued to berate you.Â
it felt like the weight of the world was crushing you, and all you wanted was for the ground to swallow you whole.
finally, after what felt like an eternity, abby huffed and shook her head. âgo. i donât want to look at you right now.â
with those final words, you turned and walked away to get ready for the group dance, your body feeling heavier with every step.Â
backstage before the group, you caught maddieâs eye, and she gave you a small, sympathetic smile. but it didnât make you feel any better. nothing could right now.
you wanted to scream, to cry, to ask your mom why she let you stay in this mess, why she let abby tear you down like this.Â
your mom stood by you and seemed like your biggest supporter. but as the years passed and you became a fixture on the show, you started to wonder why she allowed it.Â
why she let abby break you down, week after week.Â
âmom, why do we keep doing this?â you asked one evening after a particularly brutal competition weekend.Â
âwhy do you let her treat me like this?âÂ
âitâs for your future, y/n,â isla had said, eyes clouded with hopeâor maybe guilt.Â
âyouâre going to be a star.â
but that wasnât how you felt. you didnât want to be a star anymore.Â
after six seasons on dance moms, you were burnt out. drained. youâd lost your passion for dance, the thing that once gave you joy now filled with dread.Â
when you turned sixteen, youâd had enough.Â
âi canât do this anymore,â you told your mom one night after another exhausting filming day. âi want out.â
isla had hesitated, but eventually, the both of you left the show. the cameras stopped rolling, but the damage had already been done.Â
the chaos, the constant pressure to be perfectâit stripped you of any love you had for dancing. you couldnât even look at a dance studio without feeling a knot form in your stomach.Â
you grew distant from your mom too. it was hard to understand why she had put you through it.Â
âwhy didnât you just protect me?â youâd whispered one evening, tears filling your eyes. but isla didnât have an answer that made sense.
by the time you turned 19 in 2019, you were desperate for a fresh start. you packed your things and moved back to frankfurt germany, your birthplace.Â
germany felt differentâcalmer, quieter. your mother didnât come back with you which relieved you.
it was exactly what you needed.Â
over the next few years, you dove into therapy, trying to unpack the trauma of your childhood. it was slow, difficult work, but through it, you discovered a few other hobbies like photography, and ceramics. you went to university too.
and then, suddenly, almost unexpectedly, dance found its way back to you.Â
therapy helped you see it differentlyâno longer as something tied to pain, but as something that had once been yours. something beautiful.Â
by 2022, you were back in the studio, dancing again, feeling lighter than you had in years.
you built your own studio in a nice neighborhood in frankfurt. you werenât a dance instructor now, maybe someday, but you used the space to practice or hire (emotionally available) dance instructors to help you.
one afternoon, while you were in the middle of a lyrical practice, your friend macy and her sister, sara, showed up at your studio.
the three of you had become close since you moved back to germany.Â
macy went to your university before you both graduated. she had nice tan skin and long raven colored hair.Â
her older sister sara is a footballer who plays for frankfurt frauen. sara was like an older sister to you, while macy was your confidant.Â
ây/n, youâve gotta hear this,â macy said, leaning against the doorframe with a grin.
you wiped sweat from your forehead, raising an eyebrow. âwhat now?â
âsaraâs photographer friend wants to take pictures of you, specifically, for her portfolio, sheâs been keeping up with your instagram content!â macy explained. sara nodded in agreement.
âyou know, someone who can capture those insane moves of yours,â sara chimed in with a laugh.
you hesitated for a moment, but to your own surprise, you agreed. âokay, sure. why not?â
both macy and sara looked shocked.Â
âwow, that was easier than i thought it would be,â macy said, her eyes wide.
âyeah, thought weâd have to convince you a little more,â sara added with a chuckle.
two days later, you found yourself at a field location, waiting for the photographer.Â
the sun was setting, casting a warm golden glow over the area, when you saw herâlaura freigang.Â
she was taller than you expected, with an easy smile and a camera slung over her shoulder. you couldnât help but notice how attractive she was, and you made a mental note to ask sara about her later.
âyou must be y/n, iâm lauraâ laura said, walking up to you.
âthatâs me,â you replied, feeling a little flustered as her eyes met yours.Â
the shoot started, and laura was immediately in her element, capturing your movements with film. she had a way of making you feel comfortable, encouraging you to move naturally.Â
âthatâs perfect, just like that,â sheâd say, her voice soft but confident. the tone of her voice made you feel a certain type of way as well.
you danced freely, twirling and leaping in the open field, and every now and then, youâd catch her smiling at you from behind the camera.Â
there was one moment where laura calls you out for something,Â
âwhere are you from in america?â laura asked.Â
this was during a water break after shooting yourself doing high kicks and pirouettes.
âi was born here, but i lived in pennsylvania after i turned two. for a while i lived in california but that was until 3 years ago, when i moved back here.â you swallowed, thinking about the distant memories of your childhood.Â
âpennsylvania! i went to penn state for a while!â laura says, surprised.Â
âthat is so cool!â
afterwards, there was definitely some flirting going onâsmall comments, lingering looks. after the shoot wrapped up, laura lowered her camera, looking at you with a playful glint in her eyes.Â
âyou know, this was fun. thank you for doing this for me. we should do it again sometime⌠maybe over dinner?â
you blinked, caught off guard but quickly recovering.Â
âare you asking me out on a date, laura freigang?â
she smirked. âi guess i am.â
you smiled. âokay, iâm in.â
two days later, you were sitting across from her at a cozy restaurant, the low hum of conversation filling the air.Â
the two of you clicked instantly, talking about everything from the shoot to your different interests. halfway through the meal, you said something which confuses laura.Â
âdo you have other hobbies beside photography? you seem like a pretty busy woman.â you smirk.Â
âiâm sorry?â lauraâs eyebrows raise.Â
your eyes widen, afraid that you said something that is offensive.
âwait iâm sorryâ its just sara tells me that youâre a photographer so i wondered if you do other things. do you go to another uni here after you left penn state or if you do modeling orââ you pause as laura giggles.Â
âiâm flattered that you think i am a modelâ but i play for frankfurt and the german national team with sara...â
your eyes widened in surprise. how did sara not tell you this? she just made it seem like laura was just a photographer in frankfurt.
âwait, seriously? youâre a footballer and a photographer?â
laura grinned. âyeah. i like to keep busy.â
you couldnât help but laugh, feeling more flustered than youâd like to admit.Â
âthatâs... really impressive,â you said, feeling a little shy under her gaze.
as time passed, you started going to lauraâs games, cheering her on from the stands.Â
your bond deepened with every date, every conversation, until one day, laura asked you to be her girlfriend inside of her living room.
the soft glow of the floor lamp laura has casting a warm light over her space. you sat on her couch, legs curled under you, a half-empty cup of tea resting on the table in front of you.Â
youâd spent the evening like this, just talking, laughing, and enjoying each otherâs company. but now, a comfortable silence had settled between you, the kind that felt intimate without needing to be filled.
laura sat beside you, her arm resting along the back of the couch. you could feel the warmth of her presence next to you, and every so often, your hands would brush when one of you reached for something or shifted in your seat.Â
each touch sent a small spark of electricity through you, a reminder of the feelings youâd been harboring for her since that photoshoot months ago.
âyouâve been quiet for a bit,â you finally said, glancing over at her, noticing the way her jaw clenched slightly, like she was trying to find the right words.
she looked at you, her eyes soft but searching. âyeah, iâve just⌠been thinking,â she said quietly, her voice low and a little hesitant.
âthinking?â you asked, your heartbeat quickening just a little. you couldnât help but wonder what was going on behind those light colored eyes of hers. âabout what?â
she took a deep breath, turning her body slightly toward you. the air in the room shifted, something heavier settling between the two of you. âabout you,â she said, her voice steady now, like she had finally made up her mind about what she wanted to say.
your breath caught in your throat, and you felt your chest tighten. "me?" you asked softly, not sure where this was going, but the intensity in laura's gaze was undeniable.
âyeah, you,â she repeated, her eyes not leaving yours.Â
âweâve spent a lot of time together these past few months, nearly everyday, and iâve really gotten to know you. i didnât expect to feel this way when i first met you at that shoot, but,â she trailed off, her hand moving to gently take yours, her thumb brushing lightly over your knuckles. âi canât stop thinking about you.â
your heart raced as she spoke, her words settling in the space between you like a confession youâd been secretly waiting for but never expected to hear.Â
âlauraâŚâ you started, but the words caught in your throat, your emotions tangled up in the moment.
âi know this might be a lot,â she said, her grip on your hand tightening just slightly, âbut i really like you, y/n. i donât want to keep dancing around it anymore.â she paused, her eyes softening as she looked at you, her vulnerability laid bare.Â
you both giggled at her pun before she spoke,Â
âcan i be your girlfriend?â
âwhat wait?â you were surprised.Â
âwill you be my girlfriend!?â
for a moment, you couldnât speak. your mind raced with thoughts of every moment youâd shared, the way she made you feel without even trying, the way her presence made the world seem quieter, more bearable.Â
youâd known this was going to happen someday, but hearing her say it out loud made it all feel more real than youâd imagined.
âyes,â you finally said, your voice barely above a whisper. but the word hung in the air like a promise, and the smile that broke across lauraâs face made your heart feel like it might burst. âyes, iâd love to.â
her smile widened, and she leaned in, her forehead resting against yours for a moment, the closeness of her sending a shiver down your spine.Â
"yay," she murmured softly, her breath warm against your skin.
your fingers intertwined with hers, and for the first time in what felt like forever, you allowed yourself to let go of the fears, the doubts, the baggage from your past.Â
in that moment, it was just you and laura, your hearts laid bare, and the quiet understanding that something beautiful was beginning between the two of you.
you chuckled softly, pulling back just enough to look at laura fully. âhow about i cook for you? tomorrow night?â you suggested, your eyes sparkling with excitement.Â
"iâm pretty good in the kitchen."
laura raised an eyebrow, smirking. "oh really? a dancer, a university graduate, and a chef? you're just full of surprises."
you grinned, leaning in closer, your voice dropping to a playful whisper. âyouâll have to find out for yourself.âÂ
and as she pressed a soft kiss to the back of your hand, you couldnât help but feel like this was exactly where you were meant to be.
it didnât take long for fan pages to catch on. suddenly, everyone was talking about how one of their favorite childhood dancers was now dating a german footballer.Â
fans were floored and happy for you-- but to you, it was surreal in the best way.Â
as you sat next to laura after one of her games, her hand wrapped around yours, you couldnât help but think that despite everythingâdespite the chaos of your pastâyouâd finally found happiness.Â
my masterlist is here if you want to read more!

Okay this is gonna be long, but Iâve got a lot of ground to cover so please bear with me. In a real way, this is my series thesis.
Iâve said before, many times now (like a cycle) that for me the most important scene is ep 1 act 1 scene 1. Thereâs something There that I have been struggling to see clearly, struggling to articulate, and s2e9 really finally gave me the last pieces for it.
I think that Pit Girl is the point of the entire story. But not in the way that I thought going in. I feel like Iâm rambling, so Iâm going to try to structure my thoughts.
Imagine youâre a new viewer. You havenât watched yj start to finish 30 times, youâve never even buzzed before. You turn on the tv and the FIRST thing that happens is you see ... brutality. A half dressed girl chased through the freezing woods, murdered without a chance. They drag her through the snow, string her up, pour her blood on the ground. Hack her into unrecognisable chunks. Sit around in scary outfits and rip at her, with a huge focus on the teeth, as horror music plays. Then, Misty takes off her mask, puts on her glasses, and does the worst possible thing. She smiles. Directly at you.
Again, forget everything you know and go on vibes. Youâre seeing the teens pre-crash, and youâre seeing them in the third timeline, fully formed, with horror motifs and covered in fur. Youâd be mistaken for thinking that you were seeing start and end. Except that... we know, and you know, that Pit Girl is the middle. These monsters somehow came back from this. How? When theyâre so so so far gone?
Hence the show. I know Iâm not breaking new ground here, but bear with me. Iâm going somewhere.
(Edit: Readmore added because honestly, LONG post)
Youâd be forgiven, fresh-faced new viewer, for thinking you were watching some kind of gross-out slasher. But what happens in S1? Restraint. Laura Lee, the first non-crash victim dies at the end of episode eight. Jackie end of ep 10. (For the sake of this thesis weâre going to be almost exclusively focused on the teens.)
And yet thereâs this tonal shift, Itâs like ... inevitability. Like watching a crack in a window thatâs very slowly spreading. Everything is steadily Getting Worse. The weather is slowly getting colder, the days are getting darker, foodâs getting scarcer, life is getting harder. But so much of this difficulty is coming from external events and pressure. Yes, cracks start to show in the internal relationship dynamics, of course, but if food was plentiful, if shrooms were less so, if the weather were better, then they could probably work out a very long term stable situation. Sadly for them, things are not stable, and the pressure is building.
Then Jackie dies and the glass gets a really big break.
Itâs worth mentioning at this moment that Jackie at any time couldâve come the fuck inside. Safety and warmth and even love were available to her. All it wouldâve required was for her not to be the centre of the world. To make actual goddamn concessions and join the team. Which is why she couldnât possibly make that choice, because she had to be invited, she had to be apologised to, she had to be accommodated. She couldnât see the rest of the âjackets as being people who just like her were in a really shitty situation. She saw them as being external, as being in cahoots against her, as being part of some Thing that she wasnât in on. She couldnât let go of the society theyâd left, and she preferred to die. Which sure is a choice...
Keep all of that in mind though. Weâre taught to blame Shauna for Jackieâs choices. Letâs stop with that. Jackie chose not to assimilate, she looked around the cabin at the team eating the bear and praying to the wilderness and instead of just paying lip service to fit in, like Tai, she decided to put her foot down and make a Thing of it. She decided that being Right was more important than being Included.
Seriously, keep that in mind, weâre coming back to it. Cycles, you know...
Season 2, everyoneâs hungry and hey we have this spare Jackie lying around. And we joke like âha, you gonna eat that?â Only...
No. They WERENâT going to eat her.
Really think about that for a second. They put her in the meat shed. With the bear. Think about what that does, psychologically. Linguistically. The meat shed is made to store food. The bear has a word: carcass. Day after day after week after month they carve progressively more pathetic chunks from it, subsisting on what little it offers. In the EXACT same room, sitting right there is Jackie. Her body has a different name. Corpse. With many different connotations. At NO point does ANY of them raise the fact that theyâve taken their friend and added her to their meat stockpile.
Because they havenât. Instead, theyâve added a new sub-room. The meat shed is now also a morgue. And nobody ever once had to say it. They got it. We got it. You got it. And while they starved and their bodies BEGGED for food, Jackieâs corpse lay there, frozen and fresh, and stubbornly refused to become a carcass, because they wouldnât let it. They knew that there were more important things than meat, even when they were starving.
The bacchanal was a mistake. A literal error. It simply wasnât planned, wasnât meant to go down that way. Maybe if they HAD considered that route earlier and had a discussion about it theyâd have been prepared, psychologically, maybe if they werenât so starved. Who knows. But in the middle of the night they were offered a way out, and they took it.
But Shauna took it first.
Even in their state, even faced with an ideal roasted feast infront of them, they waited until Shauna said it was okay. Because Jackie was Shaunaâs friend, and they knew that she was still a person. That this was still a corpse first. It was Shauna who was able to give them permission to survive. To turn a friend into a meal. It was not their place to take that step. To shoulder that guilt. So Shauna did it for them.
The next day theyâre devastated. The heavy reality sets in, now the hunger is settled. And Jackieâs carcass is far too real, they canât change her back into a corpse. Nat tries, bless her heart. But Taiâs screaming reaction at having eaten Jackieâs face is only an externalisation of the grief and horror and agony theyâre all going through.
And after Jackie they starve again. Hope and heat and light dwindles further. Every single day they all take another step towards death. Thatâs what starvation is, itâs the same thing as dying, you die a little bit every day until you canât die anymore.
Kristen falls. Misty doesnât even consider that she might bring her back as meat. If she hadâve, she might think, maybe sheâd be considered like ... heroic. It doesnât even occur to her. Sheâs not going to LET those bitches eat her one and only friend, and she goes out of her way to protect her.
Shauna has her horror show birth. And, no matter WHAT the context is, she produces.... meat. In the most awful, brutal way. And while the fandom made so many jokes and stuff, the reality is that yes... at least to an extent there was real nutrients there. And it was never once even brought up as an option, by these desperate, starving girls.Â
When Coach tries to kill himself, hereâs a ready source of willing meat. And Misty uses it as a threat to stop him. But itâs hollow, sheâs just putting on fake fangs to try to keep him safe. Sheâs not actually that vicious thing that sheâs pretending to be, just like sheâs not actually homophobic.
When Lottie tells Misty to eat her if she dies, Misty fights her on it. Lottie has to insist. Then when she tells the rest of the team, they are so overwhelmed with the selflessness of the gesture that it inspires them to twist it into their first hunt. Thatâs what it takes. The hunt is an act of self-sacrifice and love.
And so we get to the hunt. The proto-pit-girl, weâve come full circle and we start to learn all these answers to questions posed in act 1 scene 1. And theyâre not the answers that were assumed.
How do they get to the point of eating each other? They sacrifice themselves willingly, for the sake of each otherâs survival.
Why do they hunt the way they do? Because Shauna just canât stand to murder a friend in cold blood, a friend she cares for and has no reason to hate.
Why the spike pit? Because it keeps the blood off their hands. Because it lets them blame It and preserve a tiny fragment of their innocence.
Why the weird symbols? The ritual itself? Because they need SOMETHING to hold onto, to make it all make sense.
Why so brutal? Is it? We THINK itâs brutal. Itâs certainly bloody. But Pit Girl dies almost instantly. Her pain is over fast. She doesnât have a good time going into it, obviously, none of them want to die. But she chose to run, she couldâve taken the knife instead. And the spike trap was efficient. Yes they drag her through the snow and string her up, but itâs mechanical and just part of the process and sheâs dead already. Her pain is over fast, itâs not sadistic.
Why do they chop her up into chunks like that? Because nobody wants to eat her face. Because nobody wants to struggle with her humanity, they want her to look just like any other meat. So that they might be having deer or bear or ... friend. Theyâre eating because they are biological machines that need to eat, that NEED death to survive. They didnât ask to be made the way they are, and theyâre doing their best to cope. Shauna, probably blindly, takes on that responsibility, to transform their friend into unrecognisable meat to change a corpse into a carcass. She takes that pain for them, holds that sin for them, out of love. So they can eat, so they can survive.
Whatâs with the creepy horror masks? During the ritual they canât handle being themselves. They create alternate versions of themselves to hold what must be done. The masks arenât there to scare anyone, because there IS NO AUDIENCE. The masks are there to hide behind. Thatâs why Misty takes hers off at the end of the scene. The ritual is over and they can go back to being people again.
Why is Misty fucking Quigley in charge? Because she CAN be. Because sheâs strong enough. If Lott/Nat/The AQ is the goddess/queen, Misty is the priestess/handmaiden, tasked with actually carrying out her orders. She interprets the queens words when sheâs too weak, she provides counsel when she needs it, she tells the team what they need to hear in the moment, she gives out the micromanagement. Mistyâs the power behind the throne, because when she says sheâll do something she fucking follows through. No matter the cost. And what the team NEEDS, whether they choose to admit it or not, is a backbone.
So...
They bring home Javi. The music uses a reference thatâs never been done before. It uses the spiritual powerballad that was playing when Laura Lee tried to fly away. It builds the expectation of Great Things, of big, potent ...
And then it just stops. As the girls are faced with the reality of whatâs laying on the table. The cold, blue corpse of a soft child who never hurt anyone. No matter what they do, no matter how hard they try they just cannot make him a carcass. But they have made the choice already, and if they turn back now itâs not like itâll bring him back. Theyâll just be starving and regretful as he rots.
So Shauna, blind and shaking, does the best she can. And when she brings in the meat, she - of all people - understands EXACTLY what Travis is going through. She knows what he needs. Because sheâs been here. With Jackie. So she brings him Javiâs heart. His core. His love. His soul.
(She doesnât bring him Javiâs head. She cuts that off and puts it aside so nobody has to eat his face... Some things are worth more than pure nutritional survival.)
And Travis, god bless him, does the only thing he can do left to respect Javi. He takes his heart, and he bites it, raw and bloody.
It hurts him to do so. It disgusts him so much, but he manages not to throw up. It disgusts the girls too, but they watch on, horrified. And thatâs the POINT. Travis makes sure that before they do this, before they do what they have to... that they all remember this is Javi, this is human, this is a person. And he preserves the horror. For all their sakes. And only then, after heâs given his blessing, after heâs done his human acts, do these starving, ravenous girls allow themselves to reach for their food.
S1E1. Act 1, scene 1. We do not know who Pit Girl is. We do not know the exact circumstances that get us there. But we do know where we started now. What the original meaning is behind each of these little things. And itâs not brutality, not barbarism. Itâs love. Itâs not lord of the flies, a bunch of monstrous human-shaped creatures giving in to their primal nature and predating on each other. Itâs a team of terrified people desperately clutching at their own humanity as hard as they can. Trying SO hard not to let that glass break, to not become the thing that the framing of act 1 scene 1 tried so VERY hard to convince us they were. Context changes everything.
And the proof is in the pudding. After they eat Jackie the shock explodes throughout the cabin. The atmosphere is thick, and horrific. Now with Javi, reduced to simple meat, carefully and lovingly seperated from what made him human, so they can grieve him while they sate their natural needs, the mood post-eating is calm and soft and warm and loving. For once theyâre all together, with grateful full stomachs and in a time of peace and plenty. Theyâve done the impossible and maintained their humanity and love for each other and their respect for Javi in a nearly impossible situation.
*takes a deep breath*
Which brings us to THIS asshole.
Right from the start, Jackie is only kind of part of the team. Sheâs the team captain, put up there by Coach Martinez, but not because sheâs the best of them but because she can maybe wrangle them into doing better. And they KNOW that sheâs not really one of them. They plot around her, and just donât bring her in on it. They put up with her, more than loving her, sheâs just kind of forced upon them. But she does her best, to try to maintain some semblance of order, giving pep talks and the like.
Wait, Jackie? I mean coach. My bad.
Anyway, so Jackie has one friend, Shauna. She SEEMS popular, and everyone talks to her, but Shaunaâs the only one who actually likes her. And Shaunaâs her connection point to the team. Sheâs got one foot on each side, and is torn as to where her real loyalties lie.
Sorry Iâm talking about Jackie again.... weird.
In S1E9/10 Shauna finally chooses the team, for real. And Jackie tries to pull her back away, but Shauna puts her foot down. No way, she counters, Iâm ON the team, youâre the odd one out. Why donât YOU leave, Jackie? Jackie looks around at the burgeoning cult, she thinks âLook at these evil monstrous bitches, and now Shaunaâs one of them TOO?â And instead of finding a compromise, instead of doing introspection, instead of anything like that, Jackie goes and freezes to death because it turns out that sheer rage wonât keep you warm in sub zero temperatures. Because no matter what happens, Jackieâs Right and itâs more important to her to be Right than Included. If sheâs not in charge than why is she even THERE?
Hold on, I see my mistake. Let me backtrack.
Right from the start, Coach is only kind of part of the team. Heâs trying to hide from his real life, from Paul and the complexities of being genuine in society by taking on the job of coaching the âjackets. And they KNOW that heâs not really one of them. Heâs just the guy they have to listen to, because society put him there. But he tries his best, giving pep talks and the like.
So Coach has one friend, Natalie. He SEEMS popular, and everyone talks to him, but Natâs the only one who actually likes him. (Ignore Misty, a schoolgirl comphet crush is not the same thing). And Natâs his connection point to the team. Sheâs got one foot on each side, and is torn to where her real loyalties lie. Sometimes sheâs on the bench with Coach, complaining about the state of things. Sometimes sheâs in the thick of it with them all, and Coach is nowhere to be found.
In S2E9, Nat finally chooses the team, for real. And Coach tries to pull her back, but Nat puts her foot down. No way, she counters, Iâm ON the team, Iâm worse than them, youâre the odd one out. Go, save yourself, you donât belong in this place. Coach looks at a table covered in blood and gore, at Natâs face, at the rest of the team pledging fealty to her. And instead of looking for context, or looking for compromise, or even remotely trying to understand what heâs looking at he thinks
Look at these evil monstrous bitches. Theyâre eating each other. Theyâve all gone mad. Theyâve even gotten Nat now. Thereâs no hope for them, thereâs no hope for anyone out here.
And he decides that theyâre corrupt. That the way you deal with that is fire. And heâs wrong.
(I have a theory that heâs gone and jumped off the cliff, that he set the fire to clear the corruption, and now like Jackie, unable to live in this situation any longer, heâs decided to die himself. Iâd not be surprised to find him in s3e1 that way)
Jackie was a frustrating, difficult person. Because no matter how things went she just COULDNâT let go of the fact that she was trying to fit a mold that just didnât suit her. She was raised with super high expectations, when she was really just kind of mid. And thatâs fine, honestly, most people ARE mid, thatâs why itâs mid. But she refused to see that those around her were shedding their social pressures, were adapting to the wilderness. They werenât having a good time, they werenât hunting and foraging because they were out there, camping for fun. Nobody wanted to be there. They were just trying not to complain about it, because they were all in the same boat.
Coach is similar. He simply wonât adapt. Refuses to. I mean this is a guy whoâs STILL trying to live in the closet when thereâs open lesbians making out in public around him. Who thinks of others as inherently monstrous when he himself, as a gay man, should know better. Because thatâs what trying to fit your society-assigned role does to you.
Itâs no accident that he and Jackie both spend a long time in the woods and neither of them can do something as basic as start a fucking campfire. Javi, a little kid, survived for MONTHS on his own in that cave. Coach couldnât make it a day alone. Jackie couldnât get through a night. They both rely so heavily on the team without ever once recognising it. Because SOMEONE was keeping the fires going. They both just ... refused to engage.
And just like Jackie canât see that theyâre not having fun out there in the woods, on the knifes edge of survival, Coach canât see that theyâre not having fun when they are so desperate they feel itâs warranted to sacrifice one of their own. He always thought of them as monsters, and he just sees what he expects to: a bunch of stupid useless teenage girls, finally doing what he always expected they would.
At any point... At ANY point he couldâve come in from the cold. He couldâve just accepted reality as they have. He couldâve taken some meat and accepted the price, as they have, joined them in their GRIEF about it, shared their humanity, and survived. Just as Jackie couldâve come in from the cold, and become part of the whole. But instead, they sit in the cold, consumed by their bitter hate, and decide that no, itâs everyone ELSE whoâs wrong.
And who emerges from the burning cabin? A bunch of scared kids. Shauna, the FIRST cannibal, who saves Jackieâs prom dress before anything else. Travis, who grabs Javiâs wolf. Nat who grabs the ammunition - that they NEVER use on each other - because if they lost that theyâd get SERIOUSLY desperate. And they protect each other, they make sure everyone makes it out. These supposed monsters who are so far gone they donât even care about eating each other go out of their way to save each other, not just themselves.
Because Coach is wrong. Just like Jackie was wrong. Just like WE were wrong, in s1e1. Which brings me to my actual point.
This question is asked so many times in S1 itâs almost a mantra. And the âjacketsâ oath of silence really builds up that it mustâve been something REALLY bad, right? But S2E9 has really made me recognise that fundamentally... Act 1 Scene 1 is entirely what everyone who asks this question is expecting.
Imagine they DID know what really happened out there. With that bloodthirsty fucking look in their eyes...
Theyâre not looking for an answer. Theyâre looking for a story. For an exciting spooky nightmare they didnât take part in, so they can get a shiver and a thrill they didnât earn.
Theyâre not looking for a love story. Theyâre not looking to hear how HARD these scared, tragic, broken people fought to hold onto their morals and their humanity and their sanity even against their own survival. Theyâre not interested in Shauna blinding herself just to try to stop her hands from shaking. Theyâre not looking to hear about Travis choking down the blood of his brother just to make sure that he can really FEEL it. So he can share the guilt, and never ever pretend like itâs Just Meat. The look in his eye when he canât think of any good response to Vanâs arguments that he needs to let Javi save him. What they want is...
They donât want the context. And if the âjackets ever did try to tell anybody what actually DID happen out there, all they would see is ... Episode 1, Act 1, Scene 1. A bunch of monsters. Eating each other. Just like Jackie. Just like Coach. Just like we did, on first glance.
Iâve been saying this whole time that Yellowjackets is doing something really special. That itâs letting us see behind the curtain, that while everyoneâs asking this big question, âwhat really happened?â, weâre the ones who get to know. Because it canât be told. It canât be spoken. It can only be seen. Experienced. I think that S2 has finally finished the first major arc in the teen timeline, that we now have the context to understand what comes next. And I do believe that it will get messy, it will devolve. Into fighting and screaming and battles. Itâs tragic, but it looks like thatâs the downward spiral, spiraling. As Travis and Nat deal with the guilt of what they did with Javi for each other. As Shauna and Nat butt heads and people pick sides. As Misty Mistys. As resources get even more desperate now their shelter is gone. As potentially new people (hikers? other cabin people?) get brought into conflict with them (I believe the cabin is a smoke signal, personally).
But donât ever forget that we got here with love. Expect that the downward spiral will be lubricated with toxic, broken, codependant, self-destructive love as well. Watch them love each other to death... theyâve already begun.

Please let Natalie have close relationships with other female characters in Season 3âźď¸âźď¸
Nat is arguably the only character that does not have any close female friendships in the show. Sheâs close with Travis, Coach Ben, and Kevyn (and that ginger guy from the pilot episode, Rich?); all male characters. I get that she is likely more distrusting of other women because of her strained, neglectful relationship with her mother and she seeks out more male attention/validation because of her abusive relationship with her father. And I get that she is subconsciously pursuing toxic relationships/friendships with men because that is what is familiar to her due to her father (codependency and mistreatment with Travis and becoming involved with Kevyn even though she is in a very emotionally vulnerable state and clearly not ready for it).
But now that Natalie has been in the wilderness in a matriarchal dynamic for quite some time in the teen timeline, I want to see her slowly begin to embrace femininity and connection with women (no, I donât mean she has to dress and act âgirlieâ because that is not what femininity is).
So far, her relationships with the other girls have been marked with hostility and competition. Nat argues with Taissa over freezing out Allie, she fights with Jackie about Travis, she competes with Lottie over the Wilderness and the direction the group is heading in, she expresses general disdain for Misty (with some occasional affectionate moments), and now sheâs presumably going to have conflict with Shauna over leadership. Natalie clashes with the group and isolates herself just as the girls begin to embrace a matriarchal system led by Lottie, where shared rituals and communal female bonds take center stage. I love toxic yuri donât get me wrong, but I would love to see Nat lean into this female community a bit more.
We get Taissa and Shauna, Shauna and Jackie, Misty and Crystal, Lottie and Laura Lee, Melissa and Gen, Taissa and Van (although thatâs definitely a lot more than a friendship). Whereâs Natâs female bond??
I want Nat to find safety, vulnerability, and nurturance with women! I want her to distance herself from male validation and find female connection! Even if itâs just in the wilderness and then, when she is rescued returns to a patriarchal society where her father wound will inevitably reopen, she will return to her old ways.
My hopes of Nat connecting on a deeper level with the other women on this show is fading rapidly with these new Season 3 promos. I think isolation will continue to be Natâs crutch and her conflicts with the other female leads will only increase. But a girl can hope. And I hope for Nat having at least one connection to another woman that isnât contentious. Is that too much to ask?
#warning my next post will be a rant about how Van and Nat should have been besties#yellowjackets#natalie scatorccio

Jackie Taylor x Fem!Reader
part one part two â´ part three
A/N: Hii thanks for the love on part one ! This is part two and iâll probably make one more part after this <3
Summary: Jackie starts sending you mixed signals and you struggle to keep up with her. (shitty description ik shh)
-
Students fill the classroom groggily walking over to their desks. You and Taissa always talk in homeroom and today you wanted to get her advice on Jackie.
âDo you even know if sheâs gay?â Taissa asks.
You look down at your book bag. âWell no, I mean she didnât even know I was.â
Taissa laughs. âYeah sheâs definitely straight. A blind person would know you were gay just based off your voice.â She says, poking fun at you.
âYouâre the worst.â You joke back to Taissa.
âBut seriously, the hardest part of it all is that before last week she barely crossed my mind and now, I canât stop thinking about her.â You sigh.
Just as Taissa was about to add on to the conversation, you feel a weight on your desk in front of you.
At the front of your desk stood Jackie, flashing her gorgeous smile.
âGood morning!â She said in her normal chirpy voice. Taissa looks between you and her puzzled. âWho are you guys talking about?â Jackie asks, having overhead a little bit of you guys conversation.
You look at Taissa silently pleading for her to help you. You were the worst at lying and Taissa could win a medal in it if she wanted to.
âNo one that interesting.â Taissa says, lying. âYouâre so dressed up today Jackie.â She adds on, attempting to change the subject
Jackie was wearing a skirt with a plaid pattern on it. Her pink sweater was tucked into the skirt and Taissa was right she did seem to be more dressed up than usual.
âYeah you are,â You add. âYou look good though.â You say as you look Jackie up and down checking out her outfit.
She smiles at your words and a deep blush spreads across her face.
âThank you, You look good too.â She reaches over to you and lightly runs her fingers through your hair for a second. Backing away she says, âYou always look good though.â She moves off your desk and winks at you before walking away leaving you a flustered mess.
You turn your gaze to Taissa whoâs just looking at you with a knowing eyebrow.
âIâm not crazy right?â You say. âSheâs flirting with me?â
âNo, definitely not crazy.â Taissa laughs out.
The rest of the day was a blur you tried to avoid Jackie knowing youâd just embarrass yourself if she spoke to you. It was easy to avoid her in the classes you shared and in the halls. But, at practice it would be more of a challenge.
-â˝ď¸-
You were dreading practice all day today. Usually, it was a place for you to clear your mind. But the one reason your mind wasnât clear just happened to be there.
Before practice, you were walking out of the locker room with Nat laughing at some dumb joke she made about Randy Walsh. She had started talking to him recently and couldnât stop making jokes about how much of a weirdo he was. Which happens to be exactly her type.
Watching you laugh at Natalieâs jokes, Jackie glares at Nat from across the field. She couldnât help but wonder if you and Nat were a thing. Ever since what you told her yesterday she was curious. You guys were always together and you seemed to think whatever she was saying was the funniest thing in the world. She didnt know why she cared so much but she did.
During practice the team had a scrimmage against each other. Jackie formed the teams and of course she put you on her team. You were already nervous about being next to her on the field after almost knocking her out about a week ago. All you could do was pray it would be fine.
-â˝ď¸-
The end of the scrimmage was nearing. The teams were tied 2-2. Whoever scored next would win.
Van, who was on your team, stole the ball from Shauna and ran towards Lottie to pass the ball to her. Lottie missed the ball and at the last second you ran in-front of Laura lee who almost caught it. You maneuvered the ball away from her causing her to trip. You ran downfield towards the goal and took the shot. And shockingly enough, you made it.
When the ball went in Coach Ben blew his whistle and yelled, âGame! Jackieâs team: Wins.â
Jackie ran over to you and basically tackled you into a hug.
âJesus Y/N! How the hell did you make that shot?â Still in her arms she looked at you smiling.
You smiled back at her, her hair was stuck to her face from sweat and she was slightly flushed from running. But, she still looked pretty as ever. It was almost annoying that she could still look so beautiful after a full practice.
âTo be honest I didnât think I would.â You say, laughing.
Jackie pulls away from you but leaves her arm around your shoulders. You both walk over to get water.
âIâm glad I put you on my team today.â She giggles out.
You nod, âMe too.â
-â˝ď¸-
After practice, while changing in the locker room you were talking to Nat, as usual, about tonight. There was a Halloween party and you and Nat were trying to pick out your outfits.
âMaybe I could be like a pirate or something?â You say, lacing up your shoes.
âThatâs pretty cute actually.â Nat agrees. âAnd on brand, you steal peopleâs shit in real life too.â
Rolling your eyes you interject, âThat was one time, and I was twelve.â
âAre you guys going to the party together?â You hear a voice behind you say. Turning around you see Jackieâs hazel eyes looking between you and Nat questioningly.
âUh yeah, I guessâ Nat says nonchalantly. âI mean Iâm driving her there. I always do though.â She explains.
âOh, okay Iâll see you guys there then.â Jackie says, sounding a little bit disappointed.
As she walks away you notice her look back at you and she gives you a tiny smile before disappearing behind the wall to the way outside.
âDid she sound upset or was it just me?â You question turning to look at Nat.
Nat just shrugged. âMaybe she wanted to go with you. She has been oddly close to you recently. I mean the way she hugged you after you scored on a Scrimmage? Câmon man.â Nat explained, enunciating the word scrimmage.
Your face contorts with confusion at Nats words. Did Jackie really like you? She couldnât right? I mean you guys had just started to become friends like a week ago after what happened at practice. Maybe you were just overthinking everything and Jackie was like this with everyone.
She was naturally charming and you were probably just reading over everything wrong.
You drove home from practice that day and didnât stop for coffee. You just wanted to get home and take a nap before the party. Life was too confusing.
-â˝ď¸-
Youâd been at the party for about an hour now. You had been dancing, drinking and doing anything and everything to get Jackie off your mind. Everything was so loud. Halloween music was blasting and you could barely hear anything.
You were dressed in a pirate costume like you planned. It was a tight white dress with a black corset and long boots. The dress barely reached your knees and you wore a red bandana on your head with an eyepatch. You mightâve been dressed a little bit skimpy but it was Halloween, so was every other girl on the planet.
You look over to the couch with Natalie sitting on it talking to Randy.
âIâm gonna grab another drink!â You say practically, yelling over the music so Nat would understand what you meant. She didnât react to anything you had said. Either the music was too loud or she was too focused on Randy.
You push through the crowds of people struggling to stay upright and finally find the kitchen.
You grab a cup and pour yourself a beer. You were honestly struggling to hold the cup right. To say you were tipsy might be a little bit of an understatement.
âHere to steal my gold?â You hear a familiar voice say. Jackie was standing next to you dressed as Tatum from Scream. You were shocked you werenât drooling because of how hot she looked.
Your brain finally processes her joke and you laugh a little bit. âNah, I like your costume though very hot!â You say, still yelling over the music.
Jackie was definitely just as drunk as you, if not more. It was pretty late into the night and she looked like she had been here for about 2 hours already.
Continuing to pour your drink you suddenly feel a wet splash across your chest. âBitch!â You hear Jackie yell at a girl behind her. The girl shoved her into you causing her to spill her drink all over your costume. âIâm so sorry Y/N!â Jackie slurs out looking like she wanted the floor to swallow her whole.
âItâs okay!â You say, you were too drunk to really care. Jackie grabs your hand and drags you through the crowd. You absentmindedly followed her too distracted by her warm touch to think about where you were going.
You both walk into a bathroom with Jackie closing the door behind you. The bathroom wasnât very big and your heart was beating out of your chest at the proximity to Jackie.
She wet a paper towel and started to wipe at your chest. Jackie was so focused on getting the stain she caused out, she didnât realize how close she was to you. You guys were basically sharing breaths at this point.
âItâs almost out, I think?â Jackie says meeting your eyes. Hers go wide for a second as she realizes your distance. Your breathing was labored and your cheeks a deep shade of crimson. You both stood there for a moment. Both trying to understand what the other was thinking. Just before you were going to lean in, Jackie backed away plopping herself down on the bathroom floor.
Her eyes avoided yours as you sat down next to her.
You both just sat there for a minute until she blurted out, âSo are you and Nat like, Yâknow?â
You scrunched your eyes together hoping she wasnât suggesting what you thought she was. âActually no, I donât know. Are we what?â
Almost mockingly she looks over at you as if what she was saying wasnât obvious. âLike, datingâŚâ
You widen your eyes at her and burst into a fit of giggles. âHell no.â You laugh out.
Jackie just looks at you like youâre crazy.
âI wouldnât date her if she offered me a million dollars. Sheâs just my best friend.â You say.
âOh.â Jackie says, furrowing her eyebrows confused at the fact she read it all wrong.
Your drunken mind finally connects the dots. âWhy do you care if weâre dating anyway?â
She rolled her eyes at your words and gave you an angry look as if you had just told her that her outfit was ugly or something.
âReally?â She asks you, disappointed by your question.
Quicker than youâd expected she got up and stormed out the bathroom. Leaving you dumbfounded and confused. What did you say that pissed her off so badly?
The party kind of sucked after that. You
just sat outside and smoked with Van and Taissa. Which was a bad idea as they were so obviously in love, and you, were so obviously confused with your love life.
The worst part of it all was Shauna had to drive you, Natalie and, Jackie home since Natalie ended up drinking when she was supposed to be designated driver. The tension in the car was unbearable and you were dying to get out.
Every few minutes Jackie would look into the rearview mirror just to shoot you a dirty look. Nat noticed too and tried to whisper to you. âWhatâd you do to piss the princess off?â She said very loudly, her drunk mind making her think she was whispering. Everyone in the car had have heard what she said and you just hid your face in your hands for the rest of the ride.
When you finally got dropped off you looked back into the car while walking up to your house. You and Jackie made eye contact and she looked like you had just kicked her puppy or something. You were so lost. What did you do?
