Hewlett Packard (HP)
New Post has been published on https://bankakredin.com/what-is-hewlett-packard-hp-who-is-the-hp-founder/
Hewlett Packard (HP)
What is Hewlett Packard (HP)? Who is the HP Founder?
Hewlett Packard (HP)
Hewlett-Packard (abbreviated HP) is a multinational information technology (IT in Turkish or IT in English) company that sells hardware, software and other technology services .
Headquartered in Palo Alto, California , the HP brand was founded in 1939 by Stanford University alumni Bill Hewlett and David Packard . It was a garage venture when it was first established. HP is also known as the symbolic founder of Silicon Valley . Located at 367 Addison Avenue , the garage is also known as the birthplace of Silicon Valley. The Hewlett-Packard brand sells the products and product groups listed below.
computing devices,
Enterprise and industrial level servers,
network products,
storage devices,
software,
consumables,
Printers and scanners and other display products.
In October 2014, for enterprise products and services , Hewlett-Packard Enterprise , personal computer and printer HP Inc. Separate entities were established under the brand names. The HP brand has become popular among users with laptops, LaserJet and InkJet technology printers. While Hewlett-Packard was the world’s leading computer manufacturer from 2007 to the first quarter of 2013, Lenovo brand took over this seat.
History
The first financially successful project was an audio oscillator called the HP 200A . Unlike its competitors, it attracted attention and became popular with half the price.
One of HP’s first customers was sound engineer Bud Hawkins, working for Walt Disney Studios , and he purchased 8 HP 200B audio oscillators for WD’s animated movie Fantasia .
The sales of the brand reached the level of 5.5 million dollars in 1951 with 215 personnel .
In the 1960s, partnerships were established with Japan-based Sony and Yokogawa Electric to produce high-quality devices. Due to the cost of the devices produced as a result of these partnerships, a great financial success could not be achieved.
In 1963, HP and Yokogawa entered into a joint venture, Yokogawa-Hewlett-Packard, to market HP brand products in Japan .

Somewhat poetic that Hewlett-Packard might get name sponsorship of Scuderia Ferrari
After all, much like Ferrari, HP as we all know presents the gold standard for reliability and efficiency 💀

BDS Consumer Boycott Targets
Everything here is copied over from the BDS website.
Hewlett Packard Inc (HP Inc)
HP Inc (US) provides services to the offices of genocide leaders, Israeli PM Netanyahu and Financial Minister Smotrich. HPE, which shares the same brand, provides technology for Israel’s Population and Immigration Authority, a pillar of its apartheid regime.
Chevron (including Caltex and Texaco)
US fossil fuel multinational Chevron is the main corporation extracting gas claimed by apartheid Israel in the East Mediterranean. Chevron generates billions in revenues, strengthening Israel’s war chest and apartheid system, exacerbating the climate crisis and Gaza siege, and is complicit in depriving the Palestinian people of their right to sovereignty over their natural resources. Chevron has thousands of retail gas stations around the world under the Chevron, Caltex, and Texaco brand names.
Siemens
Siemens (Germany) is the main contractor for the Euro-Asia Interconnector, an Israel-EU submarine electricity cable that is planned to connect Israel’s illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory to Europe. Siemens-branded electrical appliances are sold globally.
PUMA
Since 2018, we have called for a boycott of PUMA (Germany) due to its sponsorship of the Israel Football Association (IFA), which governs teams in Israel’s illegal settlements on occupied Palestinian land. In a major BDS win in December 2023, PUMA leaked news to the media that it will not be renewing its IFA contract when it expires in December 2024. Until then, it is still complicit, so we continue to #BoycottPUMA until it finally ends its complicity in apartheid.
Carrefour
Carrefour (France) is a genocide enabler. Carrefour-Israel has supported Israeli soldiers partaking in the unfolding genocide of Palestinians in Gaza with gifts of personal packages. In 2022, it entered a partnership with the Israeli company Electra Consumer Products and its subsidiary Yenot Bitan, both of which are involved in grave violations against the Palestinian people.
AXA
Insurance giant AXA (France) invests in Israeli banks financing war crimes and the theft of Palestinian land and natural resources. When Russia invaded Ukraine, AXA took targeted measures against it. Yet, Axa has taken no action against Israel, a 75-year-old regime of settler-colonialism and apartheid, despite its ongoing genocidal war on Gaza.
SodaStream
SodaStream is an Israeli company that is actively complicit in Israel's policy of displacing the indigenous Bedouin-Palestinian citizens of present-day Israel in the Naqab (Negev) and has a long history of racial discrimination against Palestinian workers.
Ahava
Ahava cosmetics is an Israeli company that has its production site, visitor center, and main store in an illegal Israeli settlement in the occupied Palestinian territory.
RE/MAX
RE/MAX (US) markets and sells property in illegal Israeli settlements built on stolen Palestinian land, thus enabling Israel’s colonization of the occupied West Bank.
Israeli produce in your supermarkets
Boycott produce from Israel in your supermarket and demand their removal from shelves. Beyond being part of a trade that fuels Israel’s apartheid economy, Israeli fruits, vegetables, and wines misleadingly labeled as “Product of Israel” often include products of illegal settlements on stolen Palestinian land. Israeli companies do not distinguish between the two, and neither should consumers.
Non-BDS Grassroots Boycotts:
McDonald’s (US), Burger King (US), Papa John’s (US), Pizza Hut (US), WIX (Israel), etc. are now being targeted in some countries by grassroots organic boycott campaigns, not initiated by the BDS movement. BDS supports these boycott campaigns because these companies, or their branches or franchisees in Israel, have openly supported apartheid Israel and/or provided generous in-kind donations to the Israeli military amid the current genocide. If these grassroots campaigns are not already organically active in your area, we suggest focusing your energies on our strategic campaigns above.
Recently, McDonald’s franchisee in Malaysia has filed a SLAPP lawsuit against solidarity activists, claiming defamation. Instead of holding the Israel franchisee to account for supporting genocide, we are now witnessing corporate bullying against activists. For both these reasons, we are calling to escalate the boycott of McDonald’s until the parent company takes action and ends the complicity of the brand.
Remember, all Israeli banks and virtually all Israeli companies are complicit to some degree in Israel’s system of occupation and apartheid, and hundreds of international corporations and banks are also deeply complicit. We focus our boycotts on a small number of companies and products for maximum impact.

Ahead of the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, a liberal Gen-Z-led group has purchased a handful of domain names related to the top Republican primary candidates in an effort to extinguish support from young voters.
“Republicans are not investing in outreach to young people, and we know why,” Jessica Siles, deputy press secretary for Voters of Tomorrow, said in a statement to WIRED on Friday. “Their regressive, radical stances on abortion rights, guns, climate change, and other top issues are overwhelmingly unpopular with Gen Z. Since Trump and Haley won’t accurately inform young people of their views, we will.”
Voters for Tomorrow has bought up new domain names—GenZforTrump.org and GenZforHaley.org—in an effort to sway young voters in battleground states from backing Republicans in the 2024 election. The websites will redirect to another site, GenZvsFarRight.org, which the group says will outline how “out-of-touch” the GOP’s platform is with the needs of young voters. On the redirected site, the group outlines Trump and Haley’s records on the environment, LGBTQ+ rights, and gun safety, among other issues, without explicitly encouraging people to vote for Biden.
To reach them, the group is launching a digital ad campaign across Instagram and Snapchat, hoping to reach at least half a million users in battleground states where they say the youth vote could make a difference for Democrats. “Gen Z will determine our next president,” the ads say, as they ask users to visit the websites for more information on Trump and Haley. Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Arizona, and Florida are some of the states where these ads will run, and the group plans to spend as much as it takes to reach at least half a million voters, Jack Lobel, Voters of Tomorrow's 19-year-old national press secretary, told WIRED on Friday.
For nearly a decade, domain trolling, or the act of buying up URLs related to an opposing candidate and redirecting them to unfavorable information, has become a popular digital media tactic for campaigns. In 2015, Senator Ted Cruz and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina had domains related to their GOP presidential campaigns swiped up by trolls before they were able to grab them. CarlyFiorina.org, at one point, displayed 30,000 sad-faced emojis to represent the workers she laid off at HP. In 2020, the Biden campaign bought KeepAmericaGreat.com, the Trump campaign’s reelection slogan, attacking Trump’s handling of the pandemic.
“P.S., If the GOP candidates had invested in young voter outreach efforts like we are, maybe we wouldn’t have acquired these website domains in the first place,” stated Voters of Tomorrow’s press release.
It’s impossible to know whether these domain trolls have the power to sway voter sentiment. But Voters of Tomorrow thinks they do. “Trump is the greatest threat to our generation, and we’re going to continue to expand that belief in our generation throughout this project because the stakes of the 2024 election are unprecedented,” Lobel said.
In 2020, young people came out to vote in record numbers and arguably helped turn the election in Biden’s favor. But a recent poll from the Harvard Kennedy School has shown that the same demographic appears less likely to vote in 2024 than in the prior presidential election, declining from 57 percent to 49 percent. The poll reported that a plurality of these voters distrust Biden and Trump to act on critical issues like climate change, gun violence, and health care, which could dampen their desire to vote in this year’s election. Those same voters said Trump was the better choice to address the current crisis in Gaza over Biden by 5 percentage points.
These numbers could spell trouble for Biden and the Democrats come November. Around 41 million Gen-Z voters will be eligible to vote for the first time in 2024, according to Tufts University. Of those voters, more than 8 million of them will be first-time voters, and could play an outsize role in electing the next president.
“Young voters have historically been left out of the political process, and that changed with the election of Donald Trump in 2016. Young voters realized their power. And since then, we’ve been showing up in droves to shape elections,” Lobel told WIRED. “Going into 2024, we have to build on that power.”

Please help to spread the word by sending this copypasta to as many blogs as you can and/or going to FOAs website where you can find posters to download and print out
Ok I'm not a copypasta person unless it's memes but like. Look I'm not Palestinian but I'm also a Southwest Asian and my mental health has definitely deteriorated seeing just. Everything. Especially the increase in racism and islamophobia (I'm also muslim) and seeing all the hate crimes and knowing that someone could probably shoot me in the head while I'm writing gay fanfiction in public and justify it by saying that I could've been a dangerous terrorist and therefore my entire family tree must be eradicated-
basically what I'm trying to say is that I'm hoping that making this post on the himbo tourney blog will get some eyes on this. Like. I've been feeling really powerless about this and kinda just like shriveling up and dying lately. Tbh. The world is fxcked right now. In the year of our lord 2024 /ref, here we are post undertale we are being pro-genocide how funny is that haha. It's not funny. It's. It's not. It's not funny . I can't. I've seen too many videos of children dying and crying and I just. I saw the one thing about the kid with cerebral palsy whose parents got shot right in front of them for literally no reason and then they got yelled at by soldiers and like. People literally will look at this and call these people animals?? I saw that term get thrown around a lot. It's just disgusting and like.
have people seen the bingo the literal genocide bingo. People are treating this like a joke like. Do people not realize that Southwest Asian people are like... people??? We're people you know. Like this is mainly targeting Arabs but I've seen stuff about people discriminating against the rest of us too (mainly because they can't tell the difference. Because the idea of not treating Asian cultures as interchangeable applies until you get to Southwest Asia I guess even in progressive circles everyone just says Arab for everything even here I've seen people like-). I'm Persian and I'm still scared someone will cut my life off. I'm 16. Nowruz is next week and I just want to live to it with my family. My mind is inundated wit the tears of the families that had never gotten to have their celebrations. Because of one group on one day.
one group on one day. One group on one day. it's always that. it's always that for people like us.I feel like I'm going insane. It's just 9/11 in America all over again. I wasn't even born for that. But you can just feel it all around you. And now we have the sequel, across the world. But it's used the same way. 7/23. Can't wait for the memes /s. This one thing happens therefore we can dedicate multiple months to killing all of you just making you suffer stripping your dignity you don't deserve anything and we'll make the world hate you because fxck you and then the world goes along with it because nothing good ever happens and I just want to escape from this but every time I go on tumblr it's just this and I know if I ever stop seeing this it means that the worst has happened anyway
and then people try to act like YOU'RE the bigot because you're trying to hold a country's government and military force responsible for war crimes just because the country has its branding in minority groups. How about I make this crystal clear: I don't give a flying fxck about what Israel is, it's what it's doing that matters. I'd be saying nearly the same shzt if they were PERSIAN, and that is MY ETHNICITY. I literally do not care. It doesn't matter. Because killing people is wrong and that should not be a controversial statement but I guess some people like the sound of screams in the morning. The Palestinian death toll has surpassed the 7/23 death toll. And it's still going. And not all the deaths have even been accounted for because bodies are still buried under rubble. Because they're still bombing people and they won't stop. And no one will make them stop.
like I don't give a fxck about Hamas either, I heard some of the members did genuinely say some like directly quoted antisemitic shzt and also they like condoned a racist caricature of a black woman in a magazine I think but I'm not sure about the second one (I know the magazine thing definitely happened but I'm not sure of their like involvement at all-) like. I don't need to suck there dzcks like some people do it's one group of fxcks like I don't. They're just the excuse being used for this. You're bombing the entire population of a country where the majority population is fzcking tater tots. You're attacking children. You are killing children. Paint yourself purple. Dammit. Just. Again it's 9/11 all over again but in another country.
even then like it's like. You know that trope in cartoons that shows up more often than you'd think that was in like Avatar and Korra and RWBY I think where there's like a fictional minority that is oppressed and wants rights and then active protest is represented by an evil terrorist group who attacks people and is the villains of the media and passive protest is always portrayed as good and active protest is evil and there's no nuance and also they just frame the group as just like evil spawned out of nowhere not addressing that they literally would not exist if not for the truly evil system of oppression that basically created them. Like.
You know Hamas only exists because Palestinians were already treated like shzt right? Like they were already displaced and didn't consent to the whole Israel thing and like look up Nakba it's fzcking awful like. Hamas is just a symptom of the disease and there will just be another Hamas if you try to knock it down without actually like. Doing anything about. the fact that Palestinians are oppressed. but people will just act like you can keep punching at Hamas like that'll result in anything like they're the flowers not the roots y'know-
also I'm calling it here, this entire thing is gonna definitely be used down the line by Neo-nazis I mean it kinda already is being used to justify antisemitism but like I saw the stuff of people trying to redefine antisemitism to be synonymous with antizionism and make isrseli and jewish synonymous and to basically gatekeep jewishness from anti-zionist jews (I'm not kidding I actually saw shzt like that) and it's like. Y'all they're gonna turn around in a year or two like "ohhh look at the big bad scary jews- I mean Israelis their identity is literally tied to the genocide of Palestinians they are inherently evil there is no denying it!" (Ignoring the fact that the USA and other bastards of colonization did the same shzt as Israel literally the same story history is repeating itself but we have social media brands this time-). And then like what the fxck do you do about it when the word antisemitic now means anticolonialist so no one takes it seriously anymore. What the fxck are you supposed to do about that. And when they probably made themselves right because they probably contributed to Palestinian Genocide themselves they don't care they're just using them as props in their fxcking jew hatred. But like. Yeah you are now tied to this nationality that is tied to fxcking genocide what do you do? It's like perfect to use for fearmongering around Jewish people since the shzt they used before somehow worked despite literally being pulled out of their xss istg like where the fxck did any of the bank stuff come from like. The fzck?-
im tired. I'm so tired. Both in the literal "It's past 1am" sense and the less literal "make the stop" sense.
I just don't want people to die. I just want people to be happy. I just want people to not suffer but every day it feels like it's getting worse and I just want something to change for the better and I'm scared. Why do people act like it's a bad thing to not want people to suffer? I don't understand. I just. I just don't understand. I. am I naive? For this?
does this wish make me naive?

Lovecraft: racist
Horsepower: non-SI unit, horses are not particularly standardised in their power output
Hewlett-Packard: makes printers, the devil's peripheral. also various scummy business practices
Harry Potter: author is a transphobe
Hit Points (or health points, or health pool, or any of the other different ways to expand on this acronym that your favourite game chose because they are not like other games even though it's the same thing): the abstraction of health as a one-dimensional discrete quantity does not adequately model how people being hurt works in real life. also that I had to write that whole parenthetical.

Ordered a couple more toys. Although I literally never used the recorder on the MP5 I thought it would be nice to have it on the MP50 as well. It’s not built in on the MP50 like it’s built in on the MP5, MP20 and MP30. It’s nice though because I wanna fill up the rack somehow. I got a temperature module for the rack as well because it was literally the only measurement that made sense to have two of. And I got another temperature sensor for skin temperature and I have two rectal temperature sensors. One is the one I had for my first monitor that I made an adapter for because I didn’t want to pay the ridiculous $80 for a real one. I still have room for a vuelink module in the rack for when I eventually buy a ventilator.
For those that don’t know what vuelink is it’s pretty cool. It’s a special thing philips has for their monitors that lets it communicate with other equipment. You can get modules that can communicate with just about any other equipment, the most common is ventilators but you can also communicate with external pulse oximeters, other respiratory equipment, anesthesia machines, and just about anything else you can think of. And it doesn’t just have to be philips equipment either. I want to get a Philips V60 ventilator, mainly because they aren’t absolutely huge and they can be found on eBay for a reasonable price. In the case of the Philips ventilators, they all have an RS-232 data port on it that can be used for vuelink. I also happen to have all the tools and skills to make a cable to plug into the vuelink module and have it plug into the port on the V60 ventilator which if I remember correctly is either a DB-9 or a DB-15 connector. I mean I did make the original ECG cable for the monitor I sent @callingacode although she did buy a 5 lead cable to replace it since mine was a bit janky.
Edit: I’ll probably get an intellibridge module instead of vuelink. As far as I can tell they do the same thing but intellibridge is cheaper than vuelink. I think intellibridge only works with philips equipment and vuelink can work with all equipment that’s supported by vuelink. I can also make a custom cable for intellibridge because it uses an RJ-45 connector while vuelink uses a custom philips connector that probably costs a fortune for a cable.
For those who don’t know what I’m talking about by the rack. The MP50 has a built in 4 slot rack for the older style measurement modules. The newer modules like the M3001A I have all use the MSL connection and most of them have multiple measurements in one module. The rack holds individual modules that handle individual measurements but it’s actually where most of the really advanced stuff plugs in like vuelink, BIS, EEG, SVO2, CO2, Gas Analysis, And a whole lot more. The rack modules go back to the HP/ Agilent Viridia line of monitors which I’ve mentioned many times evolved into the modern Philips Intellivue line of monitors. You’re still expected to use a rack for the Intellivue MP80, MP90, MX700 and MX800. Those four models only have MSL connections for an MSL cable to plug in, no slot for an MSL module, so you can get racks for them that connect with the MSL connection and then have a ton of rack slots and an MSL connection for an MSL module like the M3001A on the end.
On another note there’s 2 model numbers for Philips monitors. There’s the ones that start with MP or MX and then there’s the ones that start with M and end in A. It’s confusing for me too but I do understand it more than most people. It’s my guess that the division of Philips that makes all the medical equipment consists of a ton of old Hewlett Packard (HP) engineers. In which case the they like to use HP style model numbers. HP loved to put an A at the end of all their model numbers. The M stands for medical and the A is just there because that’s what HP did. The M3001A is the standard MSL module with ECG, SPO2, NIBP, Temp, and Press. Interestingly the MP2 and the X2 have the model number M3002A. The MP50 has the model number M8004A. The MP5 has the model number M8105A.
Taking a look at the wrapper my 6ft MSL cable came in you can see that the address of the Philips medical division headquarters is in the place where an HP campus once was because the street it’s on is named after Hewlett Packard. Fun fact: Where Apple’s infinite loop headquarters sits today was once also property of HP.

In the case of the Valley, you know, you can maybe start that with Hewlett and Packard and the famous HP Way — what they called management by walking around. No corner offices, shirt sleeves. They still had ties, but we took off the jacket. And this was in the 1950s. You know, Hewlett Packard was founded in a garage, an iconic garage startup in 1939. By the fifties, it's a publicly traded company. It's extremely successful. And Hewlett and Packard, are very kind of self-consciously working against the Organization Man paradigm. That was corporate capitalism in the 1950s. So creating a culture where management and the rank and file engineers are all kind of on the same side is taking the culture of the engineering lab and transferring that into a corporation.
And it also was I think philosophically too, this was the high water mark of private sector unionization. People like Dave Packard were very much against unions. Just saw them as a sign that something's wrong with a company if you can't find a way to get along. And that instead that employees of all rank should be rewarded with stock options, they should have a stake in the ownership of the company. So it was a different model. And that kind of percolates through. There are a lot of HP veterans that go on to start venture firms, start other companies, and they bring that laid back California more sort of ostensibly egalitarian corporate culture with them.

BOYCOTT FOR PALESTINE
FOA (Friends of Al-Aqsa) have organized a boycott in support of palestine.
Here are the key companies to boycott:
HP (Hewlett Packard) provides hardware and services for the Israeli Prison Service and the Israeli police who enforce apartheid on Palestinians within Israel.
Coca-Cola operates on stolen Palestinian land by having a factory in Atarot, an illegal israeli settlement. These Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. Coca-Cola is defying international law.
Israeli produce should be left on all shop shelves. When shopping always #CheckTheLabel to make sure you don't accidently buy any produce labelled from 'Israel'.
PUMA sponsors the Israel Football Association (IFA) and the Israeli national team. The IFA manages several football teams in illegal Israeli settlements, built stolen Palestinian land.
We encourage all our supporters to focus on boycotting these 3 companies and to #CheckTheLabel on produce, to be more effective in ending Israeli apartheid. We aren't saying other companies aren't complicit, but we need to be targeted and strategic to make a boycott successful, just how we have been in the past with South Africa.
Please help to spread the word.
I've been hesitant to post anything regarding the genocide in Palestine on this blog, not because I didn't think it should be spoken about, but because I felt this was an inappropriate place to discuss such a topic. It would be tasteless of me to bring up a genocide in the same breath as an impact font meme.
All that being said, I also don't want to ignore the topic altogether.
This ask should be a good place to start with action; I've done some of my own research and I'm fairly certain this is all accurate information, but I recommend anyone reading to do your own reading regarding the topic as well. Remember to focus on specific target companies most complicit with the violence and oppression, and that boycotts aren't just short-term projects.

Yes we know McDonald’s and Starbucks aren’t official BDS boycotts but a) they’re organic boycotts with benefit to all and b) your average person isn’t buying Hewlett and Packard products on the regular.
Like, trust me I’m boycotting Puma shoes and CAT equipment too! But that’s because I’ve never bought their products to begin with/they aren’t relevant to my life as a physically disabled graduate student. Boycotts have scale to consider - a corporate office might decide to stop using HP printers and ink, a construction company might refuse to buy CAT equipment, etc. but your average person can’t cut something out of their life if it isn’t there to begin with.
Let little victories be victories all the same and stop being negative and hostile on posts celebrating the cumulative power of everyone’s daily choices.

Although, Lucille Ball never lived to see the miracle of the internet, she was around to see the birth of the computer age. From 1956 to 1986 computers and robotics provided a source of comedy in the Lucyverse!
“Lucy and Bob Hope” (1956) ~ When Lucy disguises herself as a hot dog vendor at Yankee Stadium to talk to Bob Hope, she presses him into service making change for hungry spectators.
HOPE: “All of a sudden I feel like UNIVAC!”
UNIVAC (UNIVersal Automatic Computer) was an early computer made by Remington Rand that, at the time, was used mainly for weather forecasting, but later would correctly predict that outcome of the 1956 Presidential election.
UNIVAC was mentioned again in “Chris Goes Steady” (1964). Viv says that UNIVAC “couldn’t have come up with a better match” than Chris and her new boyfriend, Ted.
“Lucy the Super Woman” (1966) ~ Mr. Mooney (Gale Gordon) installs a computer at the Westland Bank. When it falls on Mr. Mooney’s foot, Lucy has a sudden rush of adrenaline to lift it up. From then on, she has super-strength and wreaks havoc with her new-found power.
To decide where to put the computer in the office, Mr. Vigran (Herb Vigran) feeds it a punch card. Punch cards were widely used through much of the 20th century in the data processing industry. The IBM 12-row / 80-column punched card format came to dominate the industry. Many early digital computers used punched cards as the primary medium for input of both computer programs and data. While punched cards are now obsolete as a storage medium, as of 2012, some voting machines still used punch cards to record votes.
“Lucy and Bob Crane” (1966) ~ Lucy has a new responsibility at the bank: running a huge, loud, punch card-driven computer. After the computer sprays shredded paper in Mr. Mooney’s face, Lucy is re-assigned to ‘new accounts’ and must move her things from one desk in the lobby to another.
“Lucy the Matchmaker” (1968) ~ When Lucy wants to find a date for Harry, she visits Select-A-Spouse, a computer dating service that surprisingly matches him with her old friend Vivian.
The comic payoff of most episodes featuring computers was having them short-circuit and run amok!
Mr. Morton (Dick Patterson) tells Lucy that Select-A-Spouse does not give out names, only numbers. Vivian is #42-26-38 and Lucy’s computer date, Bradley Henshaw, is #74-32-59. Reducing people to numbers was a genuine concern during the initial popularization of computers.
“Lucy’s Replacement” (1972) ~ Harry gets a computer and fires Lucy, who then gets a job in a typing pool at an insurance company. When she starts to miss Harry, Lucy and Kim sabotage the computer to get her old job back. EXMO-III [Experimental Model #3] was designed by ‘Al Rylander.’ It is established that EXMO is a ‘he’. EXMO speaks, but his voice is uncredited.
In addition to its computation skills, EXMO-III also makes coffee!
Naturally, EXMO malfunctions and squirts coffee and cream in Harry’s face, thereby fulfilling one of “Here's Lucy's” staple comedy bits: Getting Harry wet! Off screen, Lucy nicknamed Gale Gordon “Old Soggy Crotch”!
Coincidentally, two weeks before this episode aired (but well after its filming in late 1971), the first scientific electronic pocket calculator, the HP-35 was introduced by Hewlett-Packard and priced at $395 (equivalent to more than $2,400 today). Although hand-held electronic machines that could multiply and divide had been made since 1971, the HP-35 could handle higher functions including logarithms and trigonometry.
“Lucy and the Generation Gap” (1974) ~ At the end of a three-part mini-musical, the Carters are in space sometime in the future, but contending with the same communication problems between parents and kids as they did in the past - but this time with the aid of a space-age computer.
HARRY: “I’ve got the computer programmed with each of our personality traits and our relationships with one another. All I have to do is push a button and we’ll have the solution to the generation gap!” LUCY, KIM & CRAIG: “Well, push it!”
As usual, the computer explodes - this time, in space age colored smoke and party snakes! Welcome to the festive future!
ROBOTS
“Lucy and the Ceramic Cat” (1965) ~ After breaking the original, Lucy must get a replacement of Mr. Mooney’s ceramic cat. The last one is in a window display at Bigelow’s Department Store. Unfortunately, it is part of a display involving a robotic butler played by Larry Dean, a mime who specialized in playing a robot. He also did this on episodes of “Lost in Space” and “Bewitched.”
“Lucy and the Robot” (1966) ~ Larry Dean returns to play Major Fun-Fun, a robot toy soldier Mr. Mooney buys for his rambunctious nephew Wendell (Jay North). When the Robot falls down a flight of steps and is destroyed, Lucy must take its place.
“Lucy Makes Curtis Byte the Dust” (1986) ~ Lucy's attempt to computerize M&B Hardware results in a a shop full of lawnmowers and with Curtis listed in the obituary column. As a result Lucy returns the computer, but buys a robot named Rupert! In 1928, British schoolboys built a robot named Rupert which contained mechanical representations of human organs!
CURTIS: “You know me, always keeping up with the times.” LUCY: “Yeah, he's almost up to 1956.”
1956 was the same year that UNIVAC was mentioned on “I Love Lucy,” which brings this blog full circle.
You may now log off and power down.
