Thinking about Knives, and People.

This is Hematite:

It’s soft, only about 5-6 mohs. Iron and Oxygen love each other, and bond firmly, but the overall crystalline lattice doesn’t pack that tight.

We crack open the earth and pull these rocks, along with other ores of iron, out of where they have laid for millennia.

We pulverize them.

We subject them to unimaginable heat

Then, the shaping begins.

We do incredible violence to the iron; the hammer, the grinder; annealing and galvanizing; we take the twisted remains of the hematite and shape them into something hard, something sharp, something useful.
