YouTube 2023 Year in Review

Welp! Guess it's that time of year again. I'm sure 2023 has been a...pretty interesting year to say for quite a few people. And for me personally, it's also been a weird little year that's great in some parts and could be better in others.

What have I been up to?

My life right now is kinda divided into three parts:

A) the "IRL" stuff, as in working on my editing day job and spending time with family.

B) working on YouTube videos which I still have the passion for,

and C) playing video games, collecting cool things and socializing with my online friends.

I've always felt that it's difficult for me to put equal attention to all three, and lately, it definitely feels like I'm focusing on 'A' and 'C' more. Of course, my day job is kinda how I make a living at the moment so that obviously gets priority, but that doesn't mean I want to ignore my YouTube stuff! It's just hard to sneak in a few lines of script-writing while multitasking at a day job, and only being able to freely spend time on 'B' and 'C' during night isn't the most productive way to go about things, especially with other things that aren't YouTube production. I also have games I want to play, art I want to draw, folks I'd like to hang out with etc.

And that's a fine, healthy way of going about things online for regular folks! But I don't want my YouTube channel to stagnate as a result of this, because I still love making videos! I have support from folks on Patreon, and I still hope to continue growing the channel so that it becomes more sustainable to do frequent updates.

Part of me has always thought about just quitting my day job once I have a decent amount of money saved up and just try doing YouTube full-time and rely on Patreon, even if there's a very low chance it'd be sustainable. Of course, that's a big gamble, and I'm not truly sure if that's really the best way to go about things. But those are just my inner thoughts and I've rambled long enough...

So, I apologize for the above situation sort of being the root cause of the recent slower pace of my YouTube channel! The pace of the channel this year is about the same as in 2022, if not a little slower. I didn't really get a lot of dormant scripts from 2020-2021 off the ground, but being true to what I said in last year's Year in Review, I did end up working on a lot of spontaneous ideas even if there wasn't a "big" core video! In fact, I think almost every video released in 2023 that we'll discuss below were spontaneous ideas.

I'll talk more about what's to come for the channel in the end of the post, but for now, as usual, we'll take a look at each video I made during 2023 and I'll share my thoughts and some fun facts about each!

A Trip to the Hong Kong Kirby Pop-Up Store

Various things were put up on the channel from January to March, including a funny little short for Mario Day and a new trailer for a revamped Patreon, but the major thing I put out was a look at the Kirby Pop-Up Store in Hong Kong! This was my first time doing a scripted documentation of an in-person event, and Nintendo Hong Kong would eventually do more events like Nintendo Live 2023 Hong Kong, and I'll definitely be talking about them on my channel eventually!

As for fun facts...uhh...I suppose Patreon patrons get to see the full unedited raw footage I took from the event lol

Top 10 Nintendo Trivia You NEVER Knew

This year's April Fools video...was also a last-minute sort of idea, if I recall correctly! The concept is simple: it's a parody of generic Top 10 trivia videos in terms of presentation, but the curveball is instead of just doing other blatantly obvious fun facts, the facts would actually be super obscure, inconsequential Nintendo facts that barely anyone would've known about, so in the end it's kind of a legit trivia video in a twisted way. The facts in the video were sourced from new research, me asking friends for suggestions and some of my old posts on Twitter, so there were a few 'fun' facts that were left on the cutting room floor, and here's a good place to share them!

In an early version of the GameCube instruction manual, Mario 64 was used as a placeholder game

The infamous 'black box' in Super Mario 64 DS is not a visual glitch as commonly believed, and briefly appears in E3 2004 footage

Prototype screenshots of Mario 64 have appeared in an early print of the game's box art...and on a Nintendo Monopoly board in 2006 (next to the ? Block on the right side of the board if you're looking)

The Onion in Hey! Pikmin has white and purple in its colors, even though white and purple Pikmin never appear in the game

The original 3DS had two separate sets of black & white colors, for some reason

And to finally come clean...yes, around 30% of the video's script was generated using ChatGPT, as part of the joke. Mostly the introductory bits at the beginning of each segment, since it definitely did not give me the results I wanted when I asked it to describe the specific details of each fact, so y'know, hopefully that's a sign it's not coming for my job of talking about obscure Nintendo things! And don't worry, this will probably be the only time I ever use AI in my videos.

The Better N64 Wavebird Experience

This is a follow-up to a 2021 video where I also used the N64 Switch Online controller on an original N64, albeit with a different adapter! This actually isn't a case where I received a free product to do a review on, I just happened to read about a better alternative, pre-ordered it online, it arrived in April and I decided to knock out a quick review/comparison video in 2 days!

As such, this is more of standard informative review video, but in all honesty, I still really like this setup, and it's in my opinion still one of the best controller options for original N64 games. So much so, that I recently completed my NSO controller collection by picking up a Sega Mega Drive 6-button NSO controller to eventually use with my original Mega Drive! I'm still looking for the compatible 8bitDo adapter though, so maybe when I eventually do, that can be a quick little video on the Plus channel for patrons!

The Most Expensive amiibo

This is my favorite video I put out this year! The Qbby amiibo has always been in my sights for a while, and I've gone on record saying that I'd make a video on it if I got my hands on one.

Back in 2019, I once saw a Qbby amiibo being offered on Yahoo Auctions for a relatively cheap price, but to afford it I asked for extra donations via Ko-fi. Looking back on it now there were probably better options I could've taken, but either way the listing got cancelled and I refunded everyone who donated for that. Then sometime later I saw another relatively cheap BOXBOY package in a local listing, but then the seller never replied and deleted the listing, so the amiibo has eluded me until now, and there seems to be no signs of Qbby stock going down any time soon. My hope for a Qbby reprint continues, and hopefully this video still serve as a little awareness boost for folks who are wondering why he's one of the most expensive amiibo around!

Some of the gag editing on this one got spruced up a little bit which I enjoyed doing, but you also probably noticed that I got a turntable specifically for those glamour shots! ...yeah, I'll probably get more use of that thing later on as well.

The Kirby Battle Royale online joke wasn't exaggeration: I couldn't find anyone to play online with! I suppose that is to be expected for, y'know, playing a mid 3DS game in 2023, but it's a shame that Kirby Battle Royale doesn't at least offer a option to play with friends, and from some experimentation, it seems that two of my US-based friends were able to match with each other online while I couldn't, which also suggested some region-based matchmaking was at play. Oh well! There are some better 3DS games out there that I'd still like to play online one last time before their servers shut down this April.

Tetris...on a McDonald's Nugget

Continuing the trend of 'make video on a recent find' for the third video in a row, it's the China-exclusive McDonald's Tetris Chicken McNugget! For an unscripted Things of Interest video, it turned out pretty well, kinda like the Rhythm Tengoku arcade video in 2022! Compared to the first unscripted TOI back in like 2018, I've definitely gotten a bit better at rambling since.

I was kind of a few days late to the party, and some other videos about the Tetris Nugget from larger channels have racked up more views since, but that's not really the point! As a casual Tetris fan that happens to be in proximity to mainland China, something as bizarre as this is totally right up my alley. Covering China-exclusive gaming stuff just kinda reminds me that I have yet to do a video on the iQue Player though, which I really want to...

FlashBoy Plus: The $95 Virtual Boy Flashcart

I haven't really taken a YouTube sponsorship deal yet, but I do get emails about doing reviews or ad reads of items on occasion, like new Switch gaming accessories from different third parties and whatnot. Unfortunately, that's not really the type of stuff I do regularly on the channel unless I find a great angle to tackle it from, so the only review offer I've done on the channel until now is a limited Switch physical release in 2020.

When I was offered to review the FlashBoy Plus, I was definitely intrigued despite having already previously covered the HyperFlash 32, a technically better option! Virtual Boy flashcarts are already a very niche thing, so I gladly took the opportunity to take a look at any new option out there, and even if it's not a mainstream topic at all it does kinda appeal to me specifically.

In the video, I mentioned the (very cool looking) clear cartridge shell was not a publicly available option yet at the time of the review, but looking at the order site now, it has been added since! So hey, good for them! It is honestly pretty sick to have a transparent Virtual Boy cartridge.

Playing PC Games with the SNES Mouse & Famicom Keyboard

I started work on the next core video right after the FlashBoy Plus video (more on that in the last section), but getting sick during early December forced me to delay it, so for that month I decided to do one last spontaneous idea: a followup to the 2021 video where I used the Famicom keyboard and SNES Mouse on a computer...but this time on a proper PC!

A thing that was brought up in the comments was one setting in particular: when I was changing the mouse settings in the Control Panel, there was a 'Enhance pointer precision' option that I didn't uncheck, which presumably slows down the mouse for precise movements. There wasn't a super noticeable difference when I unchecked it during further testing, but when I coupled it with further increasing the mouse sensitivity in games that allow you to change it in-game, I was actually able to get the SNES Mouse to move at a decent pace in some games! Of course, that requires tweaking with additional settings that would normally be overkill for a regular mouse, so it's still not practical, but at least there was a setup that would alleviate some of my complaints in the video.

Okay, so what's next for 2023?

I mean 2024. Oh god the typos are already starting.

Right before the FlashBoy Plus video came out, in late June 2023, I did a video topic poll on Patreon, asking what idea I should do next. Out of the four options given, one of them is a continuation of a limbo project from 2021, and the other three were spontaneous new core video ideas I came up with and wanted to do.

Well, one of the spontaneous new ideas won the poll, so the next core video is...

A look at the camera and sound apps on both the Nintendo DSi and 3DS! I originally wanted to get this out in December, and you all know what happened to that plan, BUT the script is done, the VO recording is done, footage recording is well underway and I am confident I'll be able to get it out this January. I really like how the script for this one shaped up and am commissioning some banger thumbnail art for it (🐦), so I REALLY hope you'll look forward to it!

Afterwards, there are a few in-progress ideas that I also want to work on for quick videos afterwards. As mentioned above, I visited Nintendo Live 2023 Hong Kong which was hosted on November, and ALSO the Nintendo Hong Kong Pop-Up Store which is running from December to January, so both of those would make for a perfect video in a similar vein as the Kirby Pop-Up Store video last year!

I also went on a trip to Japan last August, and took quite a bit of photos and footage. I still want to share my findings and experiences of being in Tokyo for the first time that I could remember, so there will be a fun little piece about that going on the Plus channel in the future!

And don't forget, I'm making a video about every game I beat during 2023, continuing the thing I started last year!

And after ALL of the above is done, I still have the remaining core video ideas from the June Patreon poll I did, since I did say I'd eventually love to do all of them, and that desire still hasn't gone away. I don't know how the rest of 2024 will go for this channel but I'd say this is a fantastic starting point, and I hope it'll all go up from there, since I'd really love to be more productive on here, while trying to keep that A-B-C balance in check!

what’s your typical process for these huge art pieces? your posing is so nice and weighty and casual w such lovely interaction and I struggle to imagine how to even begin putting that together. ur ball pieces this year are epic

Aw! That's very sweet of you, and I appreciate that they look nice to people outside of my niche, haha. :] I stopped posting fantroll art for a bit, because it seemed a touch silly to post them on tumblr when.. I haven't even updated profiles here in literally years! But I'm glad that it still has some appeal even without larger context, lol.

My process is pretty straightforward! Part of it is just - take pictures, get references, get up and do the shit that you're about to draw! I would share pictures for examples here, but they're all vastly unflattering and I'm pretty sure I would be rightfully slaughtered by my helpful volunteers if I did that. But basically, I take pictures for everything if I can't find a good reference, and I'll frequently set up my phone to record myself when I'm doing an action pose!

This is because a lot of the weightiness of a picture, for me, is just.. how a person adjusts their weight and holds their body while in motion! The art I make where I'm referencing myself is generally pretty obvious, for example, because I use a cane, and keep 90% of my weight on my right leg. But different heights, different weight, different fat and muscle distribution also all play a big part in how people hold themselves, and videos and photos are fantastic for actually seeing that. When it's something too complex to do myself, or to get some unfortunate volunteer to do it for me, I like looking at Youtube videos on slow motion.

So, for example: Riccin fights with a meteor hammer. There's a decent amount of footage of people using meteor hammers on Youtube!

So, I put this on slow motion! 0.25 speed, find a shot that I like at 1:00. With something like this, there's not much point to trying to act it out IRL and film it to get new angles - we have a much easier, and more viable route, in just using fucking 3D posers. There's a lot of them out there today! A lot of people like using the one built into Clip Studio, but I just found a random one on google that's free called PoseMy.Art to demonstrate the basic idea.

The goal for this is not to make an exact replica (because I am lazy and am not entirely sure how this poser works, lol). The goal is mostly to let you explore angles, and to get a better idea of what looks dynamic or interesting enough to work with! Because the main lure of these, for me, is to look at different angles, and then use those angles as a basis to make the pose more interesting. (Neon reds on the first are where I shrank/adjusted/moved the model to create a very lazy foreshortening!)

But what about for more casual or chill poses?

The answer is mostly the same, except with added social shit in, in that - first off, I make my friends help me find poses. I have a channel in one of my discord servers that's just there for reference, and I'll ask, say, @rebatrolls if she can find me a good pose for so-and-so picture. "I want something cozy!" She will then go off into the mines of pinterest like my faithful canary ready to be strangled by cave gas or something, and emerge with pictures. Sometimes these are great pictures! Each individual entity in our godsforsaken world has their own individual preferences, which shows in the sort of pictures that they pick.

Sometimes it's helpful! sometimes it is not. An example: I asked for obnoxious cheesecake photos for Liable! Reba brought out boudoir photos. Cal brought out NSFW anime figurines. There are two weebs inside of all of us, and one of those weebs is marginally less terrible than the other. uwu

But references, finding pictures you like, and then recreating them and changing up the angle helps a lot! Because there's a lot of gorgeous, very casual, very affectionate photoshoots out there:

And my last bit is just. Looking at all of these photoshoots and candids, and looking at my own personal preferences, as well as my friends'! I am a nosy fuck and I like to ask people, like: what gestures stand out to you? what things feel the most affectionate to you? when you're close to someone, what is your body language? when you want to be an asshole, what do you do?

That gives me an easy little mental library to build off of to add in intimacy when I'm making poses. I am a grade A lemur when it comes to being physically affectionate, so I rely on that a lot in my poses - people have looped arms, people just casually finding a way to make physical contact through an arm or a foot or leaning, there's a lot of people sprawling out on top of their friends / otherwise being in close contact, because I know how that looks, basically. All the little squidgy details, like "how do people curl their fingers when they're holding hands and their arms are looped together" are already in my brain from years of experience, haha.

And the good part of plumbing my friends' brains for their own references is - some people are very fond of, like, people resting their chins on their heads, and they can say exactly how arms usually rest in that pose. Someone might have grown up with bumping noses with people as a kiss, or kissing everyone's cheeks. Some people might say: oh, I've always had taller people walk between the sidewalk and I, or else they've always sat with their shoulders parallel to their friends knees from years of braiding hair, or or or --

It makes it useful to pull off the little affectionate details! I used to struggle more with just.. casual, fond poses between characters, until I realised: oh, wait, just draw it from life. Because even if you don't have friends that are comfortable sharing that sort of info, or else you don't personally pay attention to it much in your own life - because some people don't, and that's fine! - I've also just occasionally sat down at some busy locale, brought a notebook, and wrote down the gestures, and movements, and little actions of the couples, or families, or friends that wander by. Watched the Outwaters last night and gonna post my thoughts here, spoilers ahead obviously It’s really good, the one problem I have is with the characters, in that a lot of the scenes in the first half feel like it’s just four friends hanging out the desert (which I’m fairly sure is what that part of the movie is irl) and we don’t really get to know the four of them all that well as people. That could totally be an intentional choice but it just didn’t work super well for me. Other than that it’s all incredible, the movie did such a good job of just having a feeling of dread throughout the first parts of the movie until the situation really goes to hell, where with the intro audio you know something fucking awful is coming, and there’s constant suggestions of it before things happen but you don’t know what it is, and really you never learn what’s going on and this is the kind of horror movie that revels in that.

Where it absolutely shines is in the second half, where we’re just following the cameraman trying to find to find his friends, and what I absolutely fucking love about this entire sequence is it’s shot very much like a surrealist horror piece where it’s supposed to be ambiguous if these are hallucinations being placed into the characters minds, some sort of fucked up dream, or actually real as the creature or whatever it is draws from the characters memories in order to drive them insane. In a way it feels like something out of a David Lynch film, but then you remember this is a found footage movie, and all of these things are actually happening to these characters in the real world unambiguously.

I love how this is done because it eliminates any mystery of whether this is actually real or within the heads of the characters, and all I could think watching was just how utterly hopeless the situation is in the face of a truly unknown, but very real horror for these characters.

Actually I’m really fond of the second future self and me Cartman he was cute, and he’s the fattest of the 3 versions which obviously endears him to me a little more jdfsjfsd. But wait okay bear with me for a sec here I’m just gonna use this ask as an excuse analyse something....

It bothers me how every variation of adult Cartman we’ve had so far has not only a different height and headshape but a completely different face too (like they all have totally different noses, chins, etc.?) a variation in weight, hairstyle, clothes etc. makes sense, but his actual face should at least be consistent.... It’s like, please help those of us who try to draw him what the hell are we supposed to go with LMAO 😭

The two designs from my future self and me are closer to each other, since they’re slightly more square-ish face shapes while the new design is super round. I don’t know how much value we as a fandom assign to this terrifying thing jsjbsdfsjfsdf, but a more squared off jawline does track for this as well.

Overall though I honestly would be okay with any of these facial features, it’s just weirdly annoying to me that its so inconsistent? I think it would make more sense if he had some basic features (nose/chin/face shape especially) in common with his parents the way almost everyone else does. I also think it would be cute if he looked a little bit like Liane 🥺

I suddenly had a revelation halfway through writing that second to last sentence and realised, this might be the reasoning for his nose in the post-covid special???

This is actually something I wanted to mention too which is funny omg... it’s one of the choices I didn’t like much from his new design, and it was mainly because it seemed like such an odd decision to give him such a distinctive feature* out of the blue, when something like that should really have been noticeable since he was a kid? But it suddenly makes sense now jsdjsjsd

(* this wouldn’t be distinctive irl but in terms of the majority of the noses on the show which tend to be the same basic shapes on almost everybody, anything drawn differently does stand out a lot.)

Anyway moving on because I just realised something else (the second thing now literally just while writing this reply sbdfsbdffd) Because... even though it annoys me that all 3 of these versions of adult Cartman are canon yet so different to each other, it also means that if there were also multiple future versions of the other kids they could likely be just as different to each other as well??

It’s interesting bc the kids are really so featureless in the shows style (they really are ameobas lmfao) they could turn out nearly any way. Even mixing and matching features from family members you can still get so much variation....

i don't have anyone or anything that i would consider a constant muse. when i'm on pinterest, i try to get inspired but it usually just shows me what styles to avoid. i've complained abt this to you a lot jdfkfs i feel like all the designs i see look the same nowadays (you know that look. HAHAH). i get that trends exist but rly it feels like individuality's been so diluted lately so i try to make it the most important facet of my designs, so i don't usually go on an inspiration hunt (?) and just. wait for ideas to come in and work with imagination and rough sketches from there

The last decade has COMPLETELY shaped who I am now and the fact that it ends today and essentially sends me off into the next one where turning 30 is the end is something I can’t wrap my head around and not just bc it’s barely 9am as I’m writing it. Ten years hasn’t felt like ten years and all the shit that’s happened during those ten years feels like it’s happened in the last like,,, 3.

Basically this is just me going How The Fuck Did All Of This Happen In A Decade and highlighting the big things that shaped who I am now.

I started noticing aesthetic interests I had.

I developed my love for the outdoors and exploration.

#I'm still baffled that no one ever cared to explain why Howard and Maria were carrying super soldier serum in their trunk#and the fact that he was so friendly with Zola he had a nickname for him + Cap Brexit here worked alongside him even though she knew#what he had done to Bucky#for someone who supposedly loved Steve she didn't give a damn about what he would have wanted or what had been done to Bucky

here's my explanation: he wasn't. there's absolutely no reason to think that video was a depiction of anything that actually occurred.

first and foremost, the soldier knew the camera was there. he looked right at it. he fucking shot it. and yet somehow no one ever bothered to make sure the footage was erased? bullshit

second, the entire conflict is kicked off by zemo using technology to frame bucky for a crime. this happened to involve the murder of black panther's father (along with a bunch of other people). but for iron man's dad it was totally true? unlikely

third, the footage looked... too good. look, i wasn't alive in 1991 and i couldn't find any pictures of 1991 street camera footage online (not for lack of trying, mind you), but i can't imagine it would've looked so clear (if anyone's an expert on traffic cams, feel free to correct me, cuz all i know for sure is that they didn't start using digital cameras for traffic until the late 90s, so the cam that - allegedly - caught bucky wouldn't have been digital)

four, super soldier serum in the trunk. really. REALLY. guarded by two rich people with no notable fighting skills to speak of, seemingly completely unarmed? REALLY????

moreover, while sending the winter soldier after stark makes sense as a general dick move, it's completely impractical. there's no reason a run of the mill assassin wouldn't have been able to take him out, and there's no reason not to wait until he's alone. taking out maria with him makes absolutely no sense unless you're trying to draw attention to the totally-a-normal-car-crash-please-ignore-the-strangulation-marks-and-slashed-tires-and-the-skull-that-looks-like-it-was-crushed-by-a-metal-hand-kthx. it's not just ridiculous, it's sloppy. and while that wouldn't be too surprising irl or in the comics, the mcu's version of hydra was supposed to be so good that they infiltrated hydra and like a bajillion governments for decades completely undetected. even if every single person involved in the investigation was part of hydra somehow, that would require not only that tony never see his parents' bodies, but that no one who knew them ever did either - not peggy, not jarvis, not jarvis's wife, not any of stark's bots, not rhodey, no one. someone would've noticed something sooner.

lastly, steve and nat released everything on the internet. everything. stark lives in a house with an a.i. that's intelligent enough to hack into and retrieve satellite data and analyze alien artifacts. it has constant internet access at all times. if j.a.r.v.i.s. can access it, stark can access it. therefore, either zemo got that footage from the leak that stark literally couldn't possibly have missed, or zemo got the footage from somewhere else. where'd he get it and how'd he know to look? the simplest - and only rational - answer i can think of is that he just made it up himself. he has the means (clearly good with video editing) and the motives (sokovians in general don't seem fond of stark to begin with, and zemo happened to want to start shit with his in-group), so all he needed was a series of extremely contrived incidents to isolate stark with cap and bucky where he could show off his sokovia's funniest homemade videos entry. which was part of his plan whether the footage was real or not.

my acetate cel materials test sheet. took 3 hours to paint the colors on, so hopefully that gets faster (granted, it does have 4 faces on it) but i definitely wish i'd put more time into making the test drawings be a little more... on model.

i used grafix 8.5 x 11 acetate sheets (about 25 cents a sheet where i bought it) (i went for printer sheet sized cause it's the size of my scanner's scanning bed.) All the actual lineart is done with a technical pen with koh-i-noor acetate ink in it. i tested all my regular liners and stuff (pentel pocket brush pen, sakura pigma microns and brush version, white gel pens, sharpies) just to see if i was going overkill by buying a 22$ pen and 7$ ink i'll use Only For This and nope, everything else wipes off readily except regular sharpie, which is unfortunately just not opaque enough for lineart. (weirdly, the sharpie liner wiped off so completely it's just a smudge) Although i did the white highlights in gel pen anyway, cause it's easy and a little bit more stable than some of the regular liner's inks

Even the special acetate ink is a little fragile and takes a while to dry. Note the smudges on the upper-left drawing, which i inked first. the acrylic is just cheap-ish DecoArt brand i got in a set because it had close-enough colors for most of ragged's design, but if i continue Seriously i might invest in 10$ a pot to get vinyl paints, cause although only one brand out there now still labels it as specifically animation paint (toon tones) afaict most vinyl paint should be the same thing. at least for painting cels in western animation

here are some things i've learned about the medium from this:

it's freaky how much it looks like digital art in person. the colors are so impossibly flat and smooth, which you don't think about much when looking at old animation because it has the texture of the film grain on it

harder to color in the lines than you think. especially when your colors cover up the lines. probably gonna have to try to draw a little bigger. a good reason for that stylistic choice of having thicker outlines just for the outer edges though, i couldn't afford a second technical pen right now sooooo i'll just have to git gud

you Really gotta blob on the paint. this could be from getting cheap acrylics but footage i've seen of old production suggests that's just how it is. a softer brush was better for it (i think it was a cheapo watercolor brush?) but i could only use that for fairly big areas cause it splayed out wider

it seems like the acrylic faintly warped the acetate, i think from the acrylic shrinking as it dries. in general, the cel got pretty wibbly from just handling it. Later productions did use polyester instead of acetate and perhaps that is less affected, but i don't think i feel a need to have archival quality materials, at least not when i'm just experimenting and am going to digitally composite my animation anyway. (and acetate was cheaper than Dura-Lar)

gonna have to solve the shadows it casts in the scanner, even when the lid is pressing it down. it's a pretty cool-looking effect for just an image, but it's gonna be annoying in the video editing stage (and the smooth flat colors make it super obvious to me that my scanner's colors are really off, i still had to edit this but didn't bother making it totally irl accurate)

taking out the light table for this was a pretty good idea even though i wasn't animating, cause it made it real easy to check for missed or thin spots on the paint

cotton gloves to avoid fingerprints made me feel like a Cool Serious Artist, and then i didn't have to scrub paint off my fingers afterwards

i feel like i really Get something about why old animation looked A Certain Way that i didn't understand just from reading about it, but can't put it succinctly into words. aside from that and the fun of Nerdiness, research and bragging rights i'm not sure i'd suggest animating like this when digital tools are available, cause once you put it on a screen it just looks like digital art anyway

So I just finished VHS and I absolutely loved it. One of the shorts was a bit lacking to me, but even that one was enjoyable to watch. The only big criticism I have is that like at least half the shorts showed a lot of unnecessary tiddy (the only one that didn’t feel totally unnecessary was the one where the whole plot is dudes tryin to make porn) but I mean it’s found footage and I get that irl people do show off to each other on video calls and yknow,, porn. So I can let it slide but I’m not gonna enjoy it lol. Also this goes for most found footage I’ve seen, but sometimes it’s really hard to make out who’s who and what’s going on. But overall it was really good.

There were a few comments (I watched it on shudder lol) calling the movie misogynistic, which I don’t get? I mean unless they were talking about the tiddy issue, but even that I don’t think was meant to be framed as a good thing.

Like the movie is 5 shorts in between breaks of an ongoing story of some dudes breaking into a house. They’re trying to steal some tapes, and what’s on them is the bunch of shorts we’re shown. So the overarching story of the guys in the house has nothing to do with women, except one scene where they gang up on and try to strip a woman in a parking lot, which I’m pretty sure is clearly meant to be a bad thing? I mean throughout the movie we’re shown that these guys are assholes (filming harassment of women for money, excessively saying slurs, breaking into a house for more tapes that could get them money). Yeah the characters are misogynistic from what we can tell, but that doesn’t mean the movie or director is condoning their actions.

Ok onto the actual shorts (I don’t know what any were called but I’m pretty sure theyre all in order in my head lol). I want to pick out whether the individual shorts were misogynistic at all (because I have literally nothing else to do) so for that I might have to spoil. Any spoilers will be crossed out so they’re at least a bit harder to read. And like, I’m no expert in feminism (I don’t consider myself one, but I’m not exactly anti either) but being a person with a brain and opinions I’m going to talk about it.

1: This was the only one I had any previous knowledge of going in, and I was absolutely terrified of watching this whole movie because of the jumpscare and bits of creepiness I’d seen lol. So it’s about this group of guys who are trying to make some porn, so they pick up some girls, take them clubbing, and then go to a hotel to smash. Without spoilers, one of the girls acts really really friccin creepy and I think this one scared me the most overall, even knowing the basics of what would happen. Honestly I’m surprised the internet hasn’t turned her into a meme or waifu like some people did with Momo lol. I for one really want to draw her now (but also I’m terrified of looking up reference photos 👊😔). I think I read that they made a full movie-length version of this story but I could be wrong.

Spoilers: So what happens is this creepy girl is some kind of monster who lures men in to have sex with her, so she can eat them and rip their dicks off and all that fun shit. So like a siren, but on land? Honestly I don’t even know if it’s accurate to say she lures them in, because she really didn’t do anything, the guys kinda just found her and decided to use her? Also I think she had wings?? But again, handheld camera, hard to see everything. I think that what makes this one is that while she is creepy, she doesn’t really seem dangerous, or even like she wants to be there at all. Like when the guys give her and another girl drugs, the other girl seems ok with it, but it seemed to bother the creepy girl a bit. She had this innocent vibe to her that just makes her even more creepy. And then it’s even more shocking when she starts eating these bois. So yeah I don’t think this one was misogynistic at all. The male characters just wanted to exploit her and profit from her body, and she didn’t say no but she didn’t say yes either, which is pretty interesting to see. It’s not like she tricked the guys because she never actually consented to sex. All I remember her saying was “I like you” a few times. 10/10 we love a lady who eats her attempted rapists.

2: This is the one I wasn’t entirely satisfied with, but it was very good and enjoyable nonetheless. It’s about this couple on a road trip in,, I wanna say Arizona? I’m Canadian, I’ve never heard of a state in my life. So anyway they’re at a hotel in the middle of the desert, there are a few parts that were pretty creepy but didn’t actually mean anything in the story, like there was this fortune telling machine that I thought would be something supernatural, and a scene where they’re climbing around a canyon which was just generally anxiety inducing lol. But what the story is actually about is that someone is stalking them. This one I can discuss the misogyny levels without spoilers. There’s one bit where the guy is trying to get the girl to take off her shirt, and she says only if you turn the camera off. Which he doesn’t, and after a little argument he finally accepts the no. So like, dick move, but only a tiny part of the story.

Spoilers: there are some creepy scenes of the stalker recording them both while they sleep, and stealing their money and stuff, and then later stabs the guy in the neck. But then it’s revealed that the stalker is actually two people and they film themselves making out in the bathroom mirror. I couldn’t tell if it was a guy/girl or two girls, and since it was that hard to see their faces it just occurred to me that one of them might’ve actually been the gf? Like we didn’t see what happens to her after, and it’d definitely be a more satisfying ending for her to have betrayed her bf and not just some rando stalkers. Hm. Still unclear but good.

3: This one was really fun, it’s these 4 college aged friends who take a trip to the woods, it’s pretty tropey like cabin in the woods, there’s the final girl, the slut, the nerd, and the popular jockish dude. Which I’m pretty sure was on purpose since it’s kind of a slasher. Otherwise I’d be a bit more critical of the ‘slut’ character who Literally Never Shuts Up About Sex in this short lol. But I think that was meant to be a comedic choice. Idk. Other than that, no issue. So basically final girl has kinda organized this whole trip but she starts acting weird and saying creepy stuff about things that had happened in the forest. This one really felt like a creepypasta, but like the best kind. I really love what they did with the bad guy. I really don’t want to spoil this one, so don’t read the spoilers unless you’re sure you’ll never watch it. It’s great.

Spoilers: So the twist is that final girl had been here before with her friends and was the only survivor of a massacre by some monster in the woods. So now by taking these new people on the trip she’s trying to lure the monster out using them as bait, because nobody believed her after the last trip when she told people it wasn’t human. So we get a bunch of cool deaths, and that sweet sweet betrayal. I was kinda surprised by how much they lingered on some of the gore but that’s not really an issue for me. It did suck to see the main girl die, but I mean it’s found footage not ‘I killed a monster and totally got away, here watch’ footage.

4: This one was actually really cool in terms of like ~feminism~ or whatever. I mean it doesn’t even have to be read as some kind of feminist theme, but that was just the vibe I got. I really don’t think I can go into detail on those themes without spoilers, but the basic premise is that this girl is video chatting her bf (who’s away for school or something) and she’s worried that there are ghosts in her apartment. There’s a neat backstory about something similar happening to her when the guy was away during her childhood, like weird bruises and other injuries she doesn’t remember, so it definitely keeps you interested. Also another one I reeeally don’t want to spoil because the twist is so cool.

Spoilers: So the truth is the guy actually was nearby the whole time (possibly in her place because he rushes in the room pretty quickly when she’s attacked), and it turns out that it’s not ghosts, but aliens, and the bf is using the gf to put trackers and alien babies in her, and tricking her into thinking she just got in some weird accident and forgot, which leads her to get misdiagnosed with something like schizophrenia. I mean it’s a perfect metaphor for gaslighting (he’s not hurting me, I’m just crazy), and while that’s not an exclusively feminist theme by any means (both genders are capable of abuse, and both genders are capable of being victims!) it being a theme here shows that this short is absolutely not misogynistic at all. Honestly I’m surprised I haven’t seen more people talk about this one. It’s really really great in terms of the plot, twists, and underlying themes my dumb brain came up with.

5: This one is really really cool, at first I was a little bored with it, but then you’re kinda like hm what’s going on, and then you’re like oh okay that’s going on. Coolcoolcool. So basically these 4 dudes are going to a Halloween party and they’re kinda lost, and they end up at this huge house, so they go in and it’s empty but really big and creepy so they’re like ‘maybe we’re early, or it’s more of a haunted house than a party’ stuff like that, so a bit of it is just the guys exploring the house and vaguely creepy stuff happening in the background. I’m just gonna leave it at that because like, it’s not exactly a twist but it is really unexpected.

Spoilers: So they hear people talking upstairs in the attic and they’re like ‘o nice we found the party’ but no it’s a literal cult chanting and beating up this girl they have tied up. The cult leader is like ‘wtf get outta here’ and the guys kinda get chased away, but one dumbass just had to be like ‘no man we gotta save her’ (king tbh. ur sacrifice will be remembered) so they all go back up there, beat up the cult guys, and get the girl out of there. But that’s when the really creepy stuff happens in the house, like dishes throw themselves at the guys and arms reach out of the walls (I’d actually seen this bit before in a try not to be scared compilation, but I didn’t know what it was from lol) but they do get out and into their car. But then the girl just disappears and the car stops working, and then they see her out the window and she looks kinda demony, and oop their car is stopped on a train track aaa. This one I’m kinda torn on, like about the misogyny thing, because yeah having the only female in the cast being a demon and justifying the cult’s treatment of her is iffy, but at the same time...dude she’s literally a demon, I’d be chaining her up too lol. So yeah I’m definitely leaning toward the not misogynistic side.

Overall I don’t see this movie as that misogynistic at all, and it’s otherwise just a really really good time. Definitely recommend.

So, we went to Ikea today because we really want to get started on the bathroom remodels but we're just... Lost for ideas. With the kitchen, it was easy you know? I've been dreaming about my kitchen for YEARS, and between us we had very specific ideas about accessibility and organization and utility. And while our amazing contractor helped cement some of the things we'd really only... Touched on in discussion (like tearing down the wall between the kitchen/utility room for example) we still had very set design ideas to work with.

For the bathrooms though, we didn't really get beyond: WE NEED ANOTHER ONE. We decided to take the current (tiny) bathroom and gut it and go Half-bath instead of full in that room, and shift the cats litter boxes, cat tree and feeding into that space too. But again, beyond that- nothing. We agreed that we want to turn the back bedroom into a giant like.. "master" bath. No tub, big accessible shower, repurpose some old dressers and bookcases for storage and a sink base too... But again- for actual design? NOTHIN'.

So today we went to Ikea (my idea) to at least... Get some ideas because internet looking just wasn't helping us. And it was a huge success! We picked a sink base, sink and faucet for the Half-bath, as well as a storage cabinet too. We talked more in depth about repurposing existing furniture for the big bath, talked a little about color and flooring.

Ad when we got home we sat down with my scale-drawing in illustrator and worked out placement and arrangements for the Half-bath. We picked out a walk-in shower kit from home depot to talk to our contractor about for the big bathroom (which was a huge step), and agreed on which tile samples we like and want to use in each bathroom! And that helps direct our color choices too.

So KW is going to call our contractor this week to set up an appointment for next week to have him come out, discuss our designs, get us square footage for flooring (which we'll then go order). If he gives the thumbs up on the shower we can order that too, and the toilets. And the fixtures/furniture from Ikea for the small bathroom. We'll make a trip to home depot to pick some paint cards and decide on colors for each room too. And then hopefully start work asap! We're hoping they can get the new bathroom done first then demo the old one so that we have a working bathroom throughout the whole process. But if necessary we can use the neighbor's, they don't live there anymore but haven't sold the house yet.

So all of that is fantastic and super exciting! Except uhhh I did Ikea today without crutches and even with an extra pain pill it was baaaaaad man. My abdomen keeps cramping on me, and with the temperature all over the place these days, my cramping likelihood is high anyway so I'm mostly just sitting here dreading lying down because I'm like 87% sure every muscle is going to freak out and seize up as soon as I do. Alas.

In happy news? My high school bestie gets into town on Thursday for a conference and Friday when she's done for the day I'm gonna pick her up and give her the Tour de Sarah and show her around and get food and visit. I haven't seen her since her wedding in 2014, And even then I didn't get to spend much time with her. Then next month, my SISTER IS COMING!!! Last trip before the baby is born in January and we're doing a baby shower and I'm gonna make her do real pregnancy photos and everything. Then, hopefully, if all goes well.. My Love will be able to visit around the New Year and we can really try this thing out. Amazing to think about. She makes me so happy. I don't even have words.

And I am finally almost done with the photos for CityDad, which means I can get back to work on PSS properly. though I do want to try and get some temporary business cards designed and printed before my bestie gets here. She's a DO and would be a great place to start getting PSS out to actual irl patients! :fingers crossed:

“i had a dream that brendon urie died? so like i was in an attic somewhere when i see an instagram post about a mural of brendon urie and it said something like 1987-2016 or something like that and i was just like the fuck? he’s not dead. and then i go downstairs by sliding down the railing and i turn on the tv and i see news coverage of like “BRENDON URIE DEAD AT 29” and they showed this footage of like Brendon on periscope and someone had dared him to stick a flaming hot cheeto down his throat so it’s just him deepthroating a flaming hot cheeto and then all of a sudden he starts choking and then the footage cuts off and then there’s a picture of an ambulance and then the newslady said the coroner said the cause of death was the inhalation of a flaming hot cheeto. and i remember just sobbing into my froot loops (for some reason a bowl of them had just magically appeared in my lap while i was watching) and i was really sad and my dad was like why are you so sad and before i could explain to him i woke up. and i actually woke up in tears because i thought he was dead. now that i think about it that dream was really funny like a fucking flaming hot cheeto death. hello”

liking, studying, blogging or appreciating a history subject doesn’t mean you approve of it. yes i’m talking about nazism (though it can be applied to various other subjects as well).

y’all need to learn to make the differences between bloggers who are interested by the subject versus those who actually are either apologists of the nazi regime/ideology OR who endorse it. it would be appropriate to call the latter nazis. the former, no, not at all.

the third reich is literally one of the most studied history subject there is around. honestly look around, there is a lot of media centered around it, be it video games, movies, books or tv series. and theres even more non fiction books about it, documentaries, etc. it’s a huge part of history nowadays.

and guess what? there’s a reason why it’s so fascinating, why it’s so terrible and yet interesting. it’s big alright. now those reasons would honestly need a whole post dedicated to them, but they are legit.

i’ve seen people get iffy at the mention of “nazi aesthetics” but it’s actually a thing. fascism relies a lot on its aesthetics to draw people to it. german ww2 uniforms were haute couture. nazi imagery was well thought, had specific color schemes and palettes, was all constructed with aestheticism in mind. it’s part of it, it’s part of the whole fascist package. using the words ‘nazi aesthetic’ does not make you a nazi, it’s another facette of the study of fascism and more specifically nazism, which was even bigger on aesthetics.

now on to the whole blogging about the third reich thing. as i keep repeating, it is a big subject, for some reason people are drawn to it. there’s nothing wrong with studying it. in fact, we absolutely need people to study it, especially in those times where the right is rising again. history is important. history is problematic, and we study those problems. 

if those bloggers you like to call nazis were actually certified historians, if they had a PhD in history, if they were searchers in history, would you still call them nazis? i mean, have you seen books about the Third Reich, written by specialists? they 100% reflect the nazi aesthetic, they have pictures of nazis in them. that’s just how history is. reblogging historical pictures of nazis doesn’t make you a nazi. have you seen documentaries? the notorious apocalypse documentaries use only ww2-era footage. what you do with this material does not make you a nazi, it’s the way you act vis-à-vis of this ideology and the knowledge. it honestly sucks that amateurs who only want to share and learn about a very rich historical subject get told they’re nazis, whether it is online or IRL (trust me, it happens a lot IRL as well. try reading any book about nazism, which often have a swastika on the cover, in the bus. get ready for some looks).

Dream Journal Entry #50 (4/9/18)

This dream felt like a found footage film. Everything was from my camera’s POV, and everything felt grainy about the dream, rather than foggy. Like, you could see pixelation on the “footage.”

Anyway, I was hanging out with some friends (most were people I didn’t actually know irl), and we were going to explore this abandoned school?? It was really old, and supposedly there was an underground bit, like a basement or something. We went there by bike (??? i haven't ridden a bike in years but okay). It was pretty cool, i guess. Creepy as well, and I felt a strong sense of dread, like there was a demon there or something. But other than that, we just ran around, having fun. We eventually found a staircase leading down to the basement. It was all rusty, and the stairs/floor were made of concrete. I volunteered to go down first.

I walked down slowly, but only got about halfway down until suddenly i felt frozen in place. I couldn’t move. I started freaking out and I felt negative energy enter the room. Out of the shadows, two people (monsters??) wearing masks crept in. One of them wore a mask that looked somewhere between a native american mask and a traditional japanese mask????? idk. It was like a snarling human face, with bold colors and lines. The other wore a flat and circular white mask with black circles around the eyes. Hold on I gotta try drawing them uhHHH time to break out that ms paint:

So yeah the masks looked like that. They got closer and closer, but then suddenly I was teleported out??? I ended up at a house. It looked like my grandparent’s house on the kenai. I was safe, but I felt as if someone (or something) followed me. Pure dread. I kept seeing things out of the corner of my eye. It didn’t help that I was completely alone as well. There was nothing. Nothing should’ve happened.
