Born in Danville, Virginia, USA, in 1930, Harriett went to Monaco in 1967, when her husband Wilfried was asked by Prince Rainier to be Managing Director of the Société des Bains de Mer (SBM). Their children being the same ages, it was natural that a friendship developed between them all. The Grootes became Monégasques in 1973 and are now proud 4th generation citizens. Harriett was a founding member and Vice-President of the Garden Club, and also on the board of the American School (Now International School), the Princess Grace Academy of Dance and Monaco-USA.

"One day, in the late 1970s, Princess Grace came to my house with a sheaf of music, Irish songs arranged for voice and piano. What fun for us both! We started with two songs Rose of Killarney and My Wild Irish Rose (She loved roses). Her voice was lovely. The piano accompaniment was nice too, but intricate for a poor sight-reader like me. I asked for time to practice before we tried again. The idea was to eventually perform (for our families only). The Princess was involved in poetry reading tours at the time. She also practised projecting Her voice when we played golf.
Time flew and, alas, we never got back to the Irish songs. Later on, the Palace asked me to return the music sheets, which would be destined for an Irish Library in her memory. I was both wistful and happy to be able to contribute to this project, now celebrating its 40th year. "- Harriett Groote.

Hey, just letting you know there are new things on my SoundCloud, this time it’s three songs that we sang at this year’s Irish Studies Workshop (AKA the Irish Week). :D So, you know, they are the most overplayed Irish songs, but I still like them. :D And if you have a song you really like and would like to hear me do it, just send me a message, I’m currently looking for inspiration. :D

I want people to remember that “Jingle Bells” was written in the 1850s
I know there’s a lot of other really popular songs that predate it, I just think more people can sing old songs than they realise.
Also Silent Night was written in 1818.
And a famous Irish song “Óró Sé Do Bheatha Abhaile” was originally associated with the Scottish-Jacobite rising of 1745, and later the Bonnie Prince Charlie was replaced in the song by the pirate queen Gráinne Ní Mháille when Pádraig Pearse composed the lyrics we know today.
please do look it up if you dont know the date bc there may be at least an approximate answer and otherwise the last option will completely dominate and this poll will be boring.
and dont be like 'but i cant sing'... just answer the earliest tune you know well enough that you COULD sing it
periods of western classical music provided only for reference

"Danny Boy" is a famous Irish ballad that's deeply meaningful: The lyrics were penned by Frederic Weatherly, an English lawyer and lyricist, back in 1910. He paired them with the traditional Irish tune known as "Londonderry Air" or "Derry Air." It really took off during World War I and became a song closely tied to Irish communities, especially in the U.S. Despite Weatherly being English, it's widely embraced as an iconic Irish song. The song's lyrics capture themes of love, loss, and the longing for reunion. It's often sung as a goodbye or a heartfelt expression of missing someone dearly and hoping to see them again. "Danny Boy" has remained beloved over the years for its emotional depth and beautiful melody, touching hearts with its poignant lyrics.

Saying this as an Irish person since the new Hozier album just came out and there are lyrics in Irish; it’s Irish or Gaeilge (pronounced “gwhale-ga” or “gale-ga” depending on region), not Gaelic or Celtic or any other name people come up with.
It’s just a normal language that people speak in their everyday life. We learn it in school in the republic. People like myself are bilingual in Irish and English. It’s not a “fairy aesthetic cottage core leprechaun” language.
Please respect it. Our language is a touchy subject seen as how England tried to erase it by forcing English on us and severely punishing those who spoke Irish.
At the same time that does NOT mean it is a dead language. Our (in the republic) road and safety signs are in both Irish and English, same with legal documents. Our politicians speak it, and we are trying to preserve the language!
Anyways enjoy the album!

Irish-uwufication is so fucking weird anyway but like people act like Hozier - who writes primarily blues songs about politics, books and music he finds interesting, and having sex with hot women he picks up in bars - is just a nature man is so weird. Like you have Americans saying he is a bog man, he only writes acoustic songs about chaste love and nature. He lives in the woods and doesn’t interact with society at all. He is made of trees and fairies because that’s what Ireland is.
