QUEMAR LAS NAVES (2007) dir. Francisco Franco Alba Eugenia is a former pop singer who is bedridden and dying of cancer. She is cared for by her children: Helena, who dreams of traveling the world, and Sebastian, whose dreams are much more simple. Helena is totally devoted to her mother’s care , to the point of having little to no contact with anyone her age, and this isolation prompts her to nurture an unhealthy attachment to her brother. Sebastian however, is falling in love with his school's newest roughneck, Juan, who is also the nemesis of Ismael, Sebastien's preppy self-appointed protector. A new report states that NBC/Universal's streamer Peacock is - in layman's terms- down bad with only 9 million paid subscribers out of 24 million subscribers (compared to the other newer streamers Disney+ with 118.1 million subscribers and HBO Max's 73.8 million subscribers). Also besting Peacock is Paramount+ with its 47 million subscribers and a bonafide hit series with Kevin Costner's YELLOWSTONE that averages 11 million viewers. One Paramount+ series that will likely not pull those numbers, but is no less deserving of eyes is its Spanish acquisition, the thriller LOS ENVIADOS (THE ENVOYS).

Created by Juan Jose Campanella (director of 2010's Best Foreign Film Oscar for EL SECRETO DE SUS OJOS (THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES), LOS ENVIADOS stars Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Luis Gerardo Méndez as Vatican envoys, Padre Simón (Silvestre) and Padre Pedro (Simón), a Vatican lawyer and Vatican doctor, respectively whose jobs it is to validate or debunk reported miracles.

The pair who get along like anointed oil and holy water, are dispatched to Mexico to study reports of a small town priest, Rafael. (Adrián Vázquez) who has the ability to bring the newly dead back to life. As Padres Simón and Pedro embark on the investigation, the priest and his assistant disappears, which takes the priests and local doctor Adriana (Irene Azuela) deeper into the long buried mysteries surrounding the town and the missing priest. At eight episodes it shouldn't feel as long as it does. This series could have wrapped up with five episodes. It's too drawn out.

Though I do like spending time with Luis and Miguel.

I liked it, but if there's one religious thriller I have to make vows to it's Silvestre's other series, HBO Espana's 30 MONEDAS (30 Coins), which blessedly is filming its second season.

Besides 30 MONEDAS there's also the fantastic cancelled Fox series THE EXORCIST

which starred Silvestre's SENSE8 boyfriend Alfonso Herrera.

These two deserved six seasons and (another) movie.
