Shirana Shahbazi at MOMA
Last weekend, my husband and I went to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City. One of the featured artists whose work we were immediately drawn to is Iranian-born Shirana Shahbazi (شیرانا شهبازی). We really wanted to buy her work but alas it is certainly out of our budget! Her works were bright and colorful featuring geometric shapes and abstract concepts. You can see her full MOMA exhibit here.

After doing a bit of research on Shahbazi, it turns out her exhibition at MOMA was part of a deliberate effort by the museum to feature artists from countries on Donald Trump’s Muslim ban where many of their classics from Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso were replaced with contemporary works of art by Muslim artists like Shahbazi. (Artnet News)

Shahbazi was born in Tehran in 1974 but moved to Germany at the age of eleven. She went on to study art and design at the Fachhochschule Dortmund in Germany and continued her artistic studies in Zurich, Switzerland where she resides currently with her husband and daughter. Her work has been featured worldwide at MOMA, Tate Modern in London, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and several other museums and galleries across Europe, Lebanon, and Australia.
Shahbazi has worked with Iranian artists to paint her photographs onto billboards or weave them into rugs. Shahbazi said in an interview with Artnet that she was inspired by the way Iranians think of art: “I have found that [Iranians] don’t represent things that are normal—just an ordinary portrait, a mountain, and so forth,” she’s said. “If a mountain is depicted there then it has to be the highest, the most beautiful, important mountain. So I tried to take on a little of this idea of things being big, nice, colorful, and yet ordinary at the same time—replacing the subjects.”[1] She has featured photographs of everyday Iranians in her exhibits like these:

What I love about her work is how versatile it is and the impressive innovative range of techniques she uses. Her work spans everything from modern, conceptual abstract installations, photography of portraits and landscapes, and she also incorporates Iranian culture and traditional artistic techniques into her work.

Mansooreh Hosseini - Iranian Contemporary Art Mansooreh Hosseini (1926 –2012) was an Iranian contemporary artist and one of the pioneers of the country’s modern art. At a young age, it was discovered that she had a talent for drawing, which compelled her father to hire a painting tutor to help her work to her potential. Later on, she was educated at the University of Tehran in the Faculty of Fine Arts, from which she graduated in 1949. #art #artistic #iranianpainter #artist #fineart #artwork #modernart #painting #contemporaryart #culture #visualart #surrealism #abstractart #symbolism #iranianculture #blog #artblog @expositionblog https://www.instagram.com/p/Cce_84xIGSX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

On Culture and the Revolution
Earlier this month (February 11th), I attended the Middle East Center’s symposium on the Iranian Revolution’s fortieth anniversary. The series of lectures I saw, moderated by Dr. Entezari, addressed the impact of the Revolution on culture and media in Iran and abroad. The first presenter, Dr. Bajoghli, came from Johns Hopkins, while the other three speakers—Dr. Shams, Dr. Kashani-Sabet, and Mr. Mohavedi-Lankerani—came from Penn.
The Islamic Republic has been subject to and producers of a series of paradoxes in culture which, based on these presentations, confront the state’s relationship with millenia of Iranian history and tradition. Such a pattern is, of course, not unique to the Islamic Republic; we can see similar struggles in cultural definition and legitimation in the Pahlavi celebration of the Achaemenid empire and older dynasties’ claimed affiliation with figures such as Ali ibn Abi Talib and Genghis Khan. More broadly, we can find easy analogues to this historical reclamation in most any nation’s state-sponsored acknowledgement of its predecessors. The rhetoric and form of this acknowledgment is always dependent on the larger ideological and political aims of the state. The exceptional nature of the Islamic Republic both in the circumstances of its creation and in its developing goals perhaps accounts for why study of contemporary Iranian media is so thought-provoking.
The state has interests and influence in (almost) all forms of Iranian cultural production today. Dr. Sham’s talk discussed how poetry, Iran’s traditional literary art, has been appropriated and reinterpreted by the state for such diverse ends as reshaping the Iranian literary canon by emphasizing Islamic currents within it and using the words of some of Iran’s most celebrated poets, such as Hafez, to cultivate national fervor during the Iran-Iraq War.
Despite this, I never got the impression from the speaker’s that the Iranian government wished to be terribly open about its cultural maneuvers. Dr. Bajoghli explained that, at least as far as the Revolutionary Guard is concerned, subtlety is a priority. The propaganda division of the Revolutionary Guard, a branch of the armed forces, produces fake contraband media, supposedly smuggled into Iran from outside the country, which support the values of the state. During Dr. Bajoghli’s time in Iran, she witnessed firsthand the effectiveness of this counter-propaganda, which was highly effective when compared with overt pro-state material. This sort of national media is aimed especially towards Iran’s youth, and is reinforced by state support for the Shi’a Araba’in pilgrimage among other programs.
I found myself pleasantly surprised by Mr. Mohavedi-Lankerani’s presentation on Iran’s natural gas industry. Normally I’m not one for economic history, but his discussion of the trajectory in state representation of energy production was utterly fascinating. Pahlavi-era publications on natural gas emphasized the extent of Iran’s deposits and relied on themes of advancement, independence, and the conquest of nature. Following the Revolution, the tone of these sorts of articles remained largely the same, however it shifted slightly to humanize the industry by supplying pictures of anonymous Iranian laborers working together instead of pristine landscapes and massive, modern facilities.
Dr. Kashani-Sabet’s presentation provides something of an opportunity for reflection on the broader theme of shifting Iranian cultures and medias. She advocated for an increasing awareness and appreciation of the literature of the Iranian diaspora. This literature is, largely, not written in Persian, nor is it written by native-born Iranians, nor is it written in Iran. Yet what do we make of its evidently-deserved place in the Iranian literary canon? This series of contradictions is emblematic of many of the themes discussed by the four presenters I heard. As I mentioned earlier, paradoxes are everywhere in Iran’s cultural production over the last forty years. However, these are not paradoxes which disable or inhibit cultural production. They are the means by which modern Iranian culture expresses itself and are themselves part of this culture. Hopefully, I’ll be able to learn more about this subject matter in the future.
