Sometimes, you shouldn’t play Persian music at a dance.
This weekend, I had the honor of being a board member and chair (judge) of the Penn Model Congress High School Competition. At which, I had the honor of DJing the “delegate dance.” This role entailed sitting behind a table, clicking on popular music, and being yelled at by sweaty 15 year-old boys. I have attended this event for years in the past as a high school student and have always wanted a change in the music being played, and this year was my opportunity to make a change.
As the party began to die down and half of the population left, I, along with one fellow Iranian board member, decided it would be a good idea to play some Persian music. I scoured Spotify for my older brother’s “Persian” playlist– the one that we now play at every family event. Once I found it, we looked for the most modern and well-known Persian song we could find. Side note: many of the students at the dance were, in fact, Iranian, as they came from my high school, so this added to why we thought it would be a good idea.
“Joone Khodet,” a popular tune frequently played at weddings, bar-mitzvahs, and for casual listening, is an upbeat, fast-paced song that could certainly get the crowd going. Similar to my experience with feeding my roommate Persian food, I did not take into account the exocicity in my culture and how off-putting it could be to others. Every week, this was the music I heard, and even at events where there were non-Persians, they seemed to dance just as much to this music as we did. And thus, with a double click, it was blasted on the speakers.
I could not have possibly seen a faster transition from children having fun to children standing still and eventually leaving. At this point, I had realized my fault and understood my loss; therefore, the only option left was to leave from behind the table and dance myself. Already seeing my fellow Persian on the board dancing, I joined her and taught my other friends on the board how to dance like a Persian: slowly, screwing the lightbulb, petting the dog (try it at home, it works). We all eventually had fun ourselves, with a sprinkle of Persian high schooler mixed in.
From this experience, I learned again how, sometimes, it is a bad idea to introduce my strong culture to those who have never experienced it before– especially when they are least expecting it.
