“Jacob, 5 years old likes Spider-Man, Batman, Iron Man, coloring books, books, and doing arts & crafts. Wants a basketball and basketball hoop. Needs all clothes and winter gear, + shower soaps, a toothbrush and toothpaste.” You read off to Paige “Alright let’s add him too, pick one more” Paige says taking the angel tag from you and putting it with the other four.

You look around the tree looking at all the tags wishing you could give all of them the Christmas they deserve but you know you can��t. Two tags stuck out to you the most so you grabbed them and walked back over to Paige.

“I can’t pick between these two so you need to choose.” You start making Paige nod “Lila, 4 years old likes Hello Kitty, Barbie, baby dolls, Disney princesses, drawing, and Stitch. Wants a baby doll and a stuffed animal. Needs shoes and clothes” you then put that tag behind the other one and start reading the second one “Taylor, 16 years old likes skincare, makeup, hair accessories, Taylor Swift, reading, listening to music, volleyball, and basketball. Wants either cds and a cd player or vinyls and a vinyl player. Needs clothes, walking shoes, basketball shoes, and all hygiene products” you then looked up at Paige “which one?” You ask

She just walks towards you and takes both tags and puts them in the cart with the others “wha-“ you cut yourself off “I thought we were only doing 6?” You say running up to Paige to catch up with her since she started pushing the cart in the direction of the clothes “and now we’re doing 7” she says with a cheeky smile that you shake your head fondly at “but I will say we didn’t think this far ahead, this carts not gonna be big enough for 7 kids” Paige continues

You look at her then the cart and before you can say anything she cuts in “you go start getting clothes for either the boys or the girls and I’m gonna go get another cart” she says passing off the cart to you and walking off all before you could say anything

You push the cart to the closest clothes area which happens to be girls and women’s. They all need coats so you grab the correct size and design you think matches each kid and decide to start with the teenagers then work your way to the kid section. Paige comes back with another cart while you’re making your way to the kid section after getting quite a bit of clothes for the 2 girl teenagers. “Is that all the girls or just the teenagers?” Paige asks walking up to you with the cart

“Just the teenagers, I’m making my way to the kid’s section now. Why?” You replied looking up at Paige, she shakes her head and says “nothing, I was just thinking we could split up for the clothes to make this go faster, I can do the boys while your getting the rest of the girls.” You nod “yeah that could work, I’ll come over to you if I get done before you.” Paige nods saying she’ll do the same and then started walking towards the boys and men section while you continue your way to the girls section.

After you and Paige both got a lot of clothes for the kids you both decided to get the other necessities next getting all sorts of soaps, hygiene products, shoes, socks, hats, scarfs, gloves, and ear muffs. “Alright I think we can start with the wish list and like list now” Paige says stopping the cart and looking at the boys wishlist items again, making you do the same “I need to get a basketball & hoop, headphones & either an iPad or iPhone, and a pair of basketball shoes & dunks” Paige reads off

“I need a baby doll & a stuffed animal, art supplies, cds & cd player or vinyls & vinyl player, and dystopian book’s & romance books” you read off “Were kinda all over the store with this one” Paige says chuckling a little making you giggle and nod “Do you wanna split up for this one too? Should we just get everything off their list separately and meet up somewhere?” You ask making Paige look at her lists “yeah probably I think there are only like 3 aisles that we both need stuff from off of all these lists.” Paige starts thinking about how you guys should do this “Alright yeah let’s split up and get everything off the lists and meet up in the candy aisle. If you need me call me.” She continues, you nod agreeing with her telling her to also call if needed.

After around a hour and a half you start making your way to the candy aisle. You got a lot of stuff and some extra things that you think they will really like - for the baby doll you also got accessories and baby furniture, for the Barbie’s you also got the dream house, you got Taylor a vinyl player with all Taylor Swift vinyls + some vinyls of artists you think she’ll like, SOOO many books, and that’s not even all of it, there is still a bunch more of what you got.

Finally making it to the candy aisle you see Paige with her cart just as full as yours “hey babe” you say walking up to her making her look up from her phone “hey princess, you ready to checkout?” You just nod and you guys start making your way to the only area that doesn’t have long lines currently and also surprisingly - self checkout.

You and Paige both go to the only open one, with Paige letting you go first and handing you stuff for you to scan to make it easier.

When it’s time to pay you grab your wallet and get your card ready to pay, then you hear the confirmation ding making you look at Paige - standing with her phone out and grabbing the receipt “seriously? P I was gonna pay, you didn’t have to do that.” You whine out

“I wanted to do it. “ she starts then continues before you could say anything “Just let me spoil you with no complaints PLEASE” she draws the please out making you roll your eyes with a small smile on your face “Technically you’re not spoiling me, your spoiling those girls.” You say smartly making Paige smack her lips together and side eye you while putting your shopping bags in your cart “Ok well technically I’m spoiling both you and those girls because now you still have 3,798 in your bank account and their getting everything on their Christmas lists. It’s a win-win-win situation” she says with a cheeky grin

“Win-win-win situation?” You mumble under your breath “yes a win-win-win situation, what about it?” Paige sasses starting to scan all her stuff, you just shake your head and put your hands up in mock surrender “nothing” Paige just side eyes you again. Once she was done scanning and you guys fought over who payed (she cheated and payed with Apple Pay while she was pushing you back from putting your card in) you and Paige turned the gifts and tags in to where you were supposed to and then exited the store “lunch on me?” Paige suddenly asks while you guys were walking to the car making you side eye her this time.

I'll leave the raving about Boss and his team's meticulous craftsmanship to u/ThoughtsAllDay and others, but man, there's so much detail packed in here, I had to take notes. Which wasn't easy while watching on iQiyi without VIP, as each time you inadvertently scroll back past an ad insertion point it forces you to sit through another minute of unskippable ads that just ended five seconds ago. Anyway, some thoughts:

The biggest question I had from the series reveal was whether it's going to be one of those works that could generate endless discussions of "Is this a BL?" And so far it sure looks like one of those works. This first episode is the sliciest a slice-of-life teen drama could conceivably be. Or maybe it just feels that way because it's so different, due to the fact that...

The entire series being shot on iPhone (though they just say "phone" because Apple isn't paying them) gives the whole thing such an indie guerrilla film vibe, which is interesting to say the least. The unrestrained depth of field, the sound design picking up on every little jingling of the charms and chains the boys have on their bags, result in this raw, artsy feel that is almost jarring compared to conventional production values.

The open environment alone sounds like a continuity nightmare, though not having paid much attention to the people and cars in the background, I didn't noticed anything egregious.

The opening toilet shot was... a choice.

The song Fourmod's mother plays in the beginning is เด็กมีปัญหา (Dek Mi Panha) by, of course, Four-Mod. It's one of the biggest early hits from the Kamikaze teen-oriented record label. Faye Fang Kaew is another of the label's first groups. You can tell their mother is a huge fan. (By the way, the iQiyi subtitles spelling Fourmod's name after his Instagram handle is really annoying. Hope they drop it soon.)

Fourmod said "this term" when asking to take the BTS, so it's probably the start of the second semester, i.e. November. Senanikhom Station opened in December 2019, while the entire northern extension opened in December 2020. Either Fourmod was referring to starting his P.6 and M.1 years after the station and line opened respectively, or the series is set in 2023.

I laughed at how they needed a disclaimer warning not to run up the escalators and to hold the handrail - clearly mandated by BTS the series sponsor. If you're wondering about the sponsorship, by the way, it probably just involved them making special arrangements for location access and not any cash - this was the case for the 2009 movie Bangkok Traffic (Love) Story, which revolved almost entirely around the BTS. Here, the lack of crowds during the morning rush hour points to most of the people probably being hired extras.

The BTS got plenty of indirect advertising in exchange, of course. Fourmod buying the monthly pass seemed almost forced at first, but was soon leveraged to explain why he didn't know how to tap out of the system, since he'd presumably only used single tickets before. (Like Thoughts said, the attention to detail is incredible, with things like these that you have to zoom in to even notice.)

The depictions of locations are so super specific to reality, almost as if this were a documentary. The school is fictional, of course, but it's slotted into the exact location of Watpathumwanaram School in real life, and everything around it, including the path of the students' commute, is real. Don't know why they'd take a tuk-tuk instead of walking 400 metres to Siam Square, though, as the traffic is totally impossible.

I have no idea how much creative liberty they're taking with the school's flexibility with body accessories, electronics, and transgender students. I'm sure the creators based it on what's possible at some actual schools nowadays, but I can't tell how realistic it is for the setting at all. Very much appreciate the variability in the lengths of the students' shorts as a reflection of their personality, though, as it's rarely seen on screen anymore.

I raised an eyebrow at Fourmod asking for extra MSG in his fruit dip. (The subtitles mistranslate it as "chili salt".) Didn't even know it was a thing - usually it's just sugar, salt, and chilli - but apparently recipes that also add MSG aren't uncommon.

I'm about curious about the passage of time. Their painted nails almost growing out suggests probably two months passing during each of the time jumps, but that would be almost the entire school term already.

It's funny to imagine how they got Yuedpao as a main sponsor. Their shop is actually opposite Kantima Salon, one wonders whether it's a coincidence or they found the location first, then got the sponsorship later.

The Kluay Kluay banana dessert shop was clearly included to keep older viewers connected - it's probably the only Siam Square location in the entire episode that's recognizable to someone who knew the place from the 2000s. Heck, the neighbourhood has changed so much recently, few of the scene locations would have looked like shown even five years ago.

Which brings me to my final point and main impression from the episode: Everything in it feels so deliberate in its depiction of today's youth culture. Which is of course what the creators set out to do. But the thing is, I (and probably most Millennial and older viewers) can't quite tell how accurate it is. I trust that the team did their research well, and on the whole it feels real enough, but the script's particular references, slang and vernacular might as well be a foreign language. It feels rather eerily uncanny how changed some things have become in the space of a generation, and yet how familiar some things remain.

TransHPD + Trans2010s tips

TransHPD

It’s kinda cool to see someone that isn’t transitioning to a super common or well known disorder, especially as a questioning cishistrionic but I digress

1. Become extremely preoccupied in your appearance, desperately try to make it flashier or prettier or sexier, anything that would get heads turning

2. Speak dramatically. In HPD, speech may be overly enthusiastic, theatrical, or expressive. Speak with big gestures and a big voice, use a lot of hyperboles and try to garner sympathy or attention. For example, something I used to do is fake panic attacks and flashbacks for some pity points (though this was much easier in text)

3. Be sexual or provocative, purposefully wear revealing things, subtly—or blatantly, who cares?—flirt with people you are or aren’t interested in

4. Rapidly go through emotions, let’s say you’re a little sad about something minor, lean into that to the max, make yourself cry and breakdown then move on like absolutely nothing happened

5. Be shallow and superficial, express strong emotions but don’t let them last long—or make them seem insincere. People are just here to be your audience!

6. Lack detail when you speak, pwHPD tend to speak in a way that conveys broad emotions and vague ideas rather than specific, concrete details. Their speech may focus on how something feels rather than what actually happened. For example: Instead of saying, "The party had a live band, and we danced for hours," say, "Oh, it was just so amazing! Absolutely unforgettable!" without elaborating.

7. Be suggestible,

Change your opinions quickly and easily, someone likes this movie? You do too! Someone hates that movie? You do too!

Mimic others as well, you’re with someone intelligent and philosophical? Try to match them!

TRANS2010s

1. Use an older phone model (like an iPhone 5 or something) and disable modern features like widgets.

2. Stick to social media apps that were popular then: early Instagram (filters like Valencia, Amaro), Tumblr (lmao), old YouTube, classic YouTubers like Smosh, Jenna Marbles, Markiplier’s early content.

3. Continuing on old YouTube, I’m kind of assuming you’re going for the weird kid pack since that’s like the fad most talk about. Watch animation memes, creepypasta, 3am videos, miscellaneous challenges like the ice bucket challenge, vines, minecrafters like DanTDM or Stampy or whatever, SML, those weird MLG videos, etc.

4. Text primarily through SMS or use Kik, Skype, or an old Messenger app.

5. Listen to music on an iPod, MP3 player, or even burn CDs.

6. Play mobile games that were huge back then Temple Run, Flappy Bird, Candy Crush, Minecraft, Pokémon Go, Roblox

Additionally, on Roblox, play games like get eaten, the normal elevator (or any elevator game for that matter), prison life, natural disaster survival, life in paradise games, those shitty obbies that you get eaten and shat back out in. And make your account look old, have random underscores and numbers in your username, like some xXPuppyPlayz44Xx and reference your character to 2010-2019 characters

7. Wear clothes inspired by early 2010s trends: skinny jeans, combat boots, flannels, beanies, snapbacks, galaxy print, neon colors, peplum tops, and oversized sweaters.

Hair trends: ombre/dip-dye hair, feather extensions, or a side shave.

Makeup: thick winged eyeliner, matte lips, overfilled brows, BB cream.

Accessories: studded belts, infinity scarves, chokers, stacked bracelets (rubber bands, friendship bracelets, etc.)

8. Listen to 2010s artists and albums: early 1D, Justin Bieber’s Believe, Lana Del Rey’s Born to Die, Ke$ha’s Warrior, Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, Imagine Dragons, and early 2010s EDM.

9. Watch shows that were big: Teen Wolf, Pretty Little Liars, Supernatural, Glee, The Vampire Diaries, Adventure Time, Regular Show.

10. Rewatch early Marvel movies (The Avengers, Iron Man 3) and YA dystopian films (The Hunger Games, Divergent).

11. Use slang from the 2010s: “YOLO,” “swag,” “on fleek,” “cringe,” “rekt,” “bae.” Use emoticons like ;-; T-T XD, one thing I see a lot is people overusing emoticons way too much, obviously they were used often but it was not every other message, you can do that if you’d like but you WILL come off as trying too hard

12. Take grainy mirror selfies with a Canon or phone flash.

13. Handwrite journal entries with doodles of stars and lyrics.

14. Drink black coffee, eat strawberries, post aesthetic food pics.

15. Romanticize sadness but in an artsy way (”I’m not sad, I just feel too much��).

16. Sleep all day, stay up all night on Tumblr.

I could keep going since I know a lot more about 2010s than HPD, but that’d end up absurdly long, wish you luck!

Takeaways

That's a wrap on this event and rumors are saying it was Apple's last one of the year! If they do have anything else in store (there's a possible iPad Air refresh in the works or more devices with USB-C) it'll most likely just be done via press release.

For those following the rumor mill, there wasn't much surprising in this event except for maybe some of the camera specs. But if you're reading this you probably heard it all for the first time.

So now the question is, is upgrading worth it?

If you have any of last year's phones or watches my answer is short and sweet: No.

If you have older devices, the answer gets murkier. The iPhone 13 line from 2021 still holds up well against this lineup, but chances are you're noticing your battery doesn't hold up as long as it used to. The watch upgrades this year could be significant too depending on how old your model is.

Also chances are, there are no features on the Pro models of the iPhone or the Watch Ultra that you need. If you want to save money, chances are you won't notice much of a difference other than slightly better battery and display. A normal iPhone 15 model will last you a few years if you take care of it

Personally, I will not follow my own advice and will be upgrading my phone. I do it every year so please don't think this is anything special. I'll be getting the iPhone Pro Max in Blue with the base 256gb storage.

The watch is less of a sure fire thing. I think people tend to believe that I upgrade all of my Apple products often but the reality is I only splurge on a phone upgrade every year. My Watch is a Series 5 from 2019, my iPad is a 2018 iPad Pro and my laptop is a 2012 15" Retina Macbook Pro.

Four year seems like a decent amount of time between upgrades though and my watch's battery doesn't last as long as it used to so we'll see. If I do upgrade, it'll be the smaller silver stainless steel model.
