The iPhone 12 Pro has now been out for several months, and it has proven to be one of the best sellers yet (with a couple of exceptions). Consequently, there are countless reviews on it in terms of performance and features, and, of course, the camera, which continues to improve with each iteration. So, how do you write a review of the iPhone 12 Pro that isn’t like all of the other thousands of reviews out there (that probably do a much better job than I will ever do)? It isn’t easy. But I have now been using the iPhone 12 Pro Max for a few months, and my friends, family, colleagues, tech aficionados, and coworkers have been asking me: should I upgrade to the iPhone 12? My response: probably yes. But, there are a few things to think about before you do. This review of the iPhone 12 Pro is more of what I would tell my friends. It has some of the key features, yes, just like any other review, but as a “trusted advisor” on tech to those who know me, I have limited my commentary to a few core things that stood out to me. Everyone has a different perspective, different ideas on what they “need” or “want,” and different use cases. When getting any smartphone, you should carefully consider those before making a purchase…because new, cutting-edge smartphones are not exactly cheap. Here are nine items that I feel are important to think about, particularly as they relate to the iPhone 12 Pro Max (the one that I have). They aren’t in any order and can be view with equal importance. Do let me know if you have any questions! Before the features, think about the smartphone you currently have Here are some things to consider before taking the plunge and doing an expensive upgrade. I list them as a series of questions – ask these to yourself. And while I’m heavily skewed toward the Apple ecosystem and probably wouldn’t change platforms, you can ask these across platforms. How old is your current smartphone? If it is more than 1-2 years old, I would say, yes, upgrade. You can take advantage of faster processors, better cameras, stronger connectivity. What is the primary (and secondary) use for your smartphone? Is it photography or videography? Checking mail and surfing the web? Tethering with your laptop? Making phone calls? Streaming media (music and videos)? All of these are potentially important. If you use your smartphone for less processor/CPU-intensive items like just email and browsing the web, you might not need the top-of-the-line version. How is the storage on your current smartphone? Are you always having to find a way to “free up space,” or are you never able to update apps or the OS because you don’t have enough free space? If so, spend a bit extra and get more storage (the most you can if you can afford it, I’d say). Don’t get the minimum amount of space. What is a comfortable size for your hands/pocket/purse? Yes, size does matter. It affects the price, obviously, but also your viewing experience. If you are watching movies all the time, a large screen is a huge advantage. Same with taking photos or video – seeing more detail definitely helps. But if you have small hands or want to carry your smartphone easily and discreetly, you may want to opt for a smaller size.Do you really need to have 5G? It is a big buzzword. Many mobile carriers are pushing 5G as THE best thing to have. Guess what, it really depends on where you do most of your mobile phone use. If you are on WiFi most of the time (aren’t we all working from home now?), 5G might not be that important…right now. And, 5G coverage and speeds vary dramatically based on geography, proximity to 5G-enabled cell towers, etc. More about 5G later.Do you take photos or videos? One of the biggest features that all of the smartphone manufacturers talk about and compare is the camera. If you don’t take many photos or videos, you probably don’t need that smartphone with five lenses running down the back (I exaggerate, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the numbers do climb). But, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to take a “bad” picture with a newer smartphone. If you are a couple of generations behind, like with the iPhone, upgrading your iPhone will also upgrade your photos and videos (but remember the storage question above). And you may also want to think about the different levels within the same smartphone release (e.g., the iPhone 12 versus the iPhone 12 Pro). There IS a pretty big difference if photos and videos are important to you. And lastly, think about how you use your smartphone. As I said, it’s quite personal. (Don’t forget about costs as well – the price of top-of-the-line smartphones now rivals even laptops!) What if I have an iPhone already? Let me talk briefly about the iPhone upgrade in particular. This is not an algorithmic calculation in any way, just my gut feel and personal recommendation. If you have an iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro – you probably can hold off a version. If you have an iPhone X or iPhone X Max – this really depends on your budget and many of the questions above. If you have an iPhone XS/XR – truly, this depends on the questions above. My kids had these with minimal space. They take lots of photos and videos. The upgrade to the iPhone 12 Pro was almost a given.iPhone 9 – DON’T EVER UPGRADE (hint: there is no such thing as the iPhone 9 so if you have one, hold on to it!)iPhone 8 – you lose your TouchID, but FaceID is much better IMHO. I say yes, upgrade for many benefits across the boardiPhone 7 or older – this is a no-brainer. Do the upgrade! I highly recommend using Apple’s interactive iPhone model comparison tool to drill down into the differences between current and previous models and the differences within the same model year. Now that I have covered the iPhone upgrade path in general, what about the iPhone 12? There are two major versions to consider, the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro. Within these versions are two sub-versions. Here’s the lineup: iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini – see the comparisoniPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max – see the comparison Here, the difference comes down to size, price, and camera primarily. So, go back to my initial questions earlier. Each of these models has the new Apple A14 Bionic chip, so the processor isn’t really a factor. I had the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max for about a year. For me, the biggest change was the camera. You can read my thoughts about that here. So, how does the iPhone 12 Pro Max compare? Below are nine things I believe are important to talk about regarding the iPhone 12 Pro Max. 1 – Speed of the A14 Processor The A14 Bionic chip is Apple’s latest and greatest processor. As more processing power is squeezed into a smaller design, you would think things might not be that much “better.” In fact, the A14 is super fast. I could even notice it compared to my iPhone 11 Pro Max which had the A13 Bionic. Apple boasts increased efficiency, better battery life, better processing for graphics and video, and a whole lot more! 11.8 billion transistors, 16-core Neural Engine (helps with taking better photos – haha), 11 trillion operations per second (video games absolutely fly), new image signal processor (again, better photos with Smart HDR 3), Dolby Vision & 4K capable (you could actually film that next Oscar-winning film on your iPhone)…yeah. But what does that mean? To put it simply, you have a pretty amazing supercomputer in your hands. Yes, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a step up from the iPhone 11 Pro Max. It is noticeable. But it is a huge leap from all previous generations! 2 – Camera (Obviously) Talking about the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s camera is worthy of an article upon itself. There are so many technical advancements and improvements that it boggles the mind. Whether you are a professional photographer or videographer, or just the family photo-journalist trying to capture each and every moment, if you want to take amazing photos, night or day, the iPhone 12 Pro (Max) is the way to go. Be sure to review my recommendations earlier about which upgrade path makes the most sense. From the iPhone 11, you may want to wait a generation. But anything earlier, the camera is truly the forcing function. Instead of going into huge amounts of details on each updated, new, or improved feature, a nice little laundry list of items is probably sufficient. Here are some of the highlights of the iPhone 12 Pro: 4K Dolby Vision HDR – yes, you can shoot, edit, and share with that high of a quality. Record at 60 frames per second (fps) and 700 million colors.LIDAR Scanner – create a 3D depth map of objects without the dependency of light. This can be used for Augmented Reality (AR) or truly ups your photography game to help with autofocus in low-light environments.Improved Night Mode – night-mode photography blew my mind when I tested it in the iPhone 11 Pro Max. With the 12 Pro Max, it’s even better (especially when coupled with LIDAR). Faster CPU, wider aperture, improved lenses make night shots even better!5x Optical zoom – yes, you can zoom in even closer with better resolution without the need for the OS to do digital zooming (and interpreting)Improved Image Stabilization – don’t worry about having that extra cup of coffee and having jittery hands. The iPhone 12 Pro Max does stabilization at 5000 times per second!Deep Fusion & Neural Engine at work – these two techy terms essentially translate to much better detail, even at lower light, without even thinking about it.Smart HDR 3 – better refinement of highlights and shadows means you can shoot just about any time of day you want with amazing details and color balance, from whites to blacks.3 Different Physical Lenses – choose from Ultrawide, Wide, or Telephoto for the perfect composition.Apple ProRAW – this is sort of like RAW with an Apple boost. RAW photos (while huge in size), contain all of the image information – a perfect option for those photography purists!TrueDepth – while taking photos of others is great, the front-facing camera now has night mode. Those selfies never looked better! Now that is just scraping the surface of the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s camera features and improvements. If you haven’t experienced it, borrow someone’s iPhone 12 Pro and test it out. Reading a bunch of words doesn’t really do it justice; you have to experience it in action! 3 – High-Speed 5G Cellular 5G is the big thing right now. All of the carriers are talking about it. But as I mentioned before, whether 5G is good for you or not depends on a lot of things – location being the primary one. If you are on WiFi all of the time, it might not be worth it. If 5G hasn’t been fully rolled out in your area yet, again, this might not be a big determining factor. The iPhone 12 comes ready for slurping down 5G goodness. But, you should check to see if your current cellular plan even supports 5G. In fact, I had to upgrade all of my family to a 5G plan since our old unlimited plan didn’t have it. But guess what? I actually saved some money doing the upgrade. Also, if (and when) you do get the iPhone 12, be sure you take a look at the 5G options under Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options. There are some choices there to make. Personally, I have my Voice & Data set to 5G Auto and my Data Mode to be Allow More Data on 5G. Remember, 5G does consume more power. Having it on Auto supposedly will help regulate when it jumps into overdrive. Also, if you don’t have an unlimited data plan, you may blow through your 5G data allotment, so be sure to know what you sign up for. 4 – An Even Better Screen The iPhone screen continues to improve with better resolution, color depth, brightness, contrast ratios, and more. Known as the Super Retina XDR display, this new screen has up to 1200 nits of max peak brightness (800 nits typical viewing), great for movie watching and gazing in awe of HDR photos. What is a nit? It is the standard unit of luminance used when describing sources of light. The higher the rating, the brighter the display. Basically, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is pretty darn bright, which I can definitely attest to. Packed into the 6.7-inch (diagonal) screen of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which is OLED, are 3.4 million pixels. This equates to a 2778×1284 pixel resolution at 458 ppi. It is also an HDR and True Tone display. What does that mean to the rest of us (tech mumbo jumbo aside)? Watching movies, viewing photos, web browsing, and just doing menial tasks look glorious on this screen. I have even found that viewing movies, coupled with a good headset, is almost better than watching in a media room with full surround sound. But that is just me. 5 – A “New” Body Redesign I like to call the iPhone 12 Pro a bit of a throw-back edition. Physical designs change between generations. Sometimes the changes are not as obvious, while other times, the differences are pretty dramatic. The iPhone 12 moves away from the rounded edges and goes back to the iPhone 5 somewhat. This “new” design, which basically has a metallic band circling the outside, allows for more screen to be displayed and less bezel being seen. Buttons and toggles are still in the same places as before, so your muscle memory doesn’t have to change. The body is crafted from Surgical-grade stainless steel for the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, and the iPhone 12 uses aerospace-grade aluminum. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is comfortable to hold and not too slippery. However, I always highly recommend getting a good quality case to protect your iPhone investment. But, read on to the next two sections as they are both quite important when choosing a case (if you do actually need one). 6 – The Ceramic Shield The scariest thing about having an iPhone is when it accidentally falls from your hands. As if falls to the ground, so does your stomach. Will the screen shatter (which is pretty costly to repair – hint, it is worth getting Apple Care for your iPhone just to feel a bit safer)? With the iPhone 12, Apple introduced something called the Ceramic Shield. While with each iPhone generation, the durability of the screen gets better, in this generation, Apple truly wanted to make it even better. They basically baked nano-ceramic crystals (which are stronger than many metals) into the glass. This makes it much more resistant to scratches (think about your iPhone in your pocket or bad being bounced around with keys knocking against the screen). I have read reviews and tests of the new Ceramic Shield, and those parties have stated that the front screen is definitely better, even related to drop tests. Remember, the Shield is only on the front screen, so you may want to get a case to protect the edges and back anyway. And be sure that if you get a case, that on the front, the edge goes slightly above the screen to help prevent scratching of the screen if it slides across the ground, face-down. 7 – MagSafe Charging Ah, the MagSafe. Many of us who use MacBooks or MacBook Pros became familiar with the magnetic attachment for the power cord (which was unfortunately removed with the newer USB-C MacBooks or MacBook Pros. (Rumor has it, they might be back in future MacBook Pros with the M1 chip.) Using a strong magnet to hold the connective power in place, the MagSafe was great. Apple coupled the idea of power (wireless charging) with the magnet in the iPhone 12. You already had wireless charging capabilities in older iPhones, but with the addition of the magnet into the iPhone, you are sure that the wireless charger snaps into place and is charging. One of the most satisfying things about the new MagSafe charging on the iPhone 12 is that click sound when the MagSafe is locked in place and charging. There are already many manufacturers of MagSafe-compatible “puck” charges. I currently use the Apple MagSafe Charger. Sometimes I will disconnect and reconnect just to hear it. But MagSafe brings a new line of accessories to the mix. I have a clear plastic case by Apple that clearly indicates where to put the charger. The MagSafe is actually quite strong. I’m currently testing out some MagSafe stands that hold the iPhone 12 Pro Max in place without having to rest the iPhone in a cradle. And there are lots of other accessories and cases that incorporate it into their designs. 8 – Don’t Forget the Battery I have to disclaim talking about battery-related items right from the start – “your mileage may vary.” How long your battery will last really depends on how you use your device. Yes, this is stating the obvious, I know. If you have minimal apps, don’t go on your smartphone much, only have one email account, and don’t stream video, you probably have a much better battery life than I do. That being said, the battery on the iPhone 12 Pro Max is pretty good. I can get by pretty much an entire day without having to charge it up. But again, I’m a very heavy user and have many background tasks always running. The best thing about getting a new iPhone is you get a new battery. Over time, and despite new and better-charging algorithms built into iOS, your battery will degrade. Charging has also improved, BUT that is because chargers now have more power. NOTE: the iPhone 12 (Pro) does NOT come with a power adapter. Apple figures that everyone has an adapter already. I would HIGHLY recommend you get a 20W or higher adapter to take advantage of fast-charge capabilities. With a 20W or higher adapter, you can get a 50% charge in 30 minutes. (Here is one 3rd party power adapter I recently reviewed which might be a great option.) The iPhone 12 Pro Max’s batter is quite similar to the iPhone 11 Pro Max. In fact, I believe the iPhone 11 battery has a higher capacity. However, as hardware and software become increasingly optimized, capacity might not necessarily translate into a longer battery. 9 – iOS 14+ Support Last but not least here, you have to consider iOS 14 (and higher). Apple optimizes their operating system to take advantage of the latest hardware. Consequently, Apple starts dropping support for older iPhone models simply because the hardware cannot keep up with the latest iOS (another reason to upgrade if you are way behind on iPhone generations). Having the latest hardware from Apple means that iOS is essentially built for it. I probably use just a fraction of all of the iOS capabilities. And the nice thing is that regular feature and security updates to iOS mean that your iPhone 12 Pro Max stays like a fine-tuned sports car. Upgrade or Not? Yeah, ok, if you have read over 3000 words in this article, it means that you are doing your research on whether the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a good upgrade for you or not (or you just like reading my writing). There is a lot to consider when doing this type of upgrade. The first section of this article talked about why you might want to upgrade, and then the rest was about why choose the iPhone 12 Pro Max. But I feel like it also does come down to price and what your budget can handle. There are 4 models of iPhone 12 and within those, you have storage capacity (I always say go as large as you can). Don’t forget about the 5G upgrade you may need to do with your mobile wireless carrier. Below are a few options with prices (on Amazon) with the most storage available: iPhone 12 mini – 256GB Black – $879iPhone 12 – 256GB Blue – $979iPhone 12 Pro – 512GB Graphite – $1,299iPhone 12 Pro Max – 512GB Graphite – $1,399 Shop on HighTechDad The product shown below (and related products that have been reviewed on HighTechDad) is available within the HighTechDad Shop. This review has all of the details about this particular product and you can order it directly by clicking on the Buy button or clicking on the image/title to view more. Be sure to review other products available in the HighTechDad Shop. Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max $1,399.00 Buy on Amazon I wrote this review and article for friends, family, and co-workers in mind to help them potentially navigate the iPhone upgrade path. But, obviously, if you are reading this, I wrote this article for you as well. Please! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Leave a comment below or ask me on Twitter. I’m happy to help if I can. Upgrading your iPhone is always fun yet tricky. Just be sure you fully understand what features you want versus what features you need! HTD says: The iPhone 12 Pro Max is a supercomputer in your hand with new features and capabilities that are astounding. Knowing if and why you should upgrade to a new iPhone is critical to your happiness using it later.

This is going to be a short week of trading, but if you’re following penny stocks, you also know it’s likely going to be a busy one. Major markets across the board reached new record levels on Tuesday following the long weekend. Given the unbridled bullishness that we’ve seen in small-caps, it makes sense that some of the biggest percentage gainers early on were penny stocks.
Setting the tone during the morning session was Socket Mobile (NASDAQ: SCKT). This is a company we’ve discussed a few times in the past. The data company’s stock price was still below $3 the last time we covered the company. Socket had also announced that its SocketScan S550 received certification from Google Wallet for enhanced mobile pass capabilities. Fast-forward to this week, and Socket mobile – which was a penny stock as of Friday’s close – has exploded to highs of $35. The move came on the back of news that Socket launched an enterprise-grade barcode scanner for the iPhone 12, Pro, Pro Max, and Mini.
With this surge in SCKT stock on Tuesday has come a flood of attention on tech penny stocks, in general. This has usually been the case when it comes to big breakouts like this. Traders seek out sympathy momentum in either companies with a similar product or companies in a similar industry. We also see that the Select Sector SPDR Trust Tech ETF (NYSE: XLK) has also given a nice boost to industry sentiment. The benchmark tech ETF reached new all-time highs on Tuesday as momentum carried over from last week’s gains...Continue reading on PennyStocks.com

Thanks to Seagate and LaCie, I Don’t Have to Purchase a New MacBook Pro
Back in 2016, when I purchased my MacBook, I thought that 1TB of storage would go far. At the time, I was using Dropbox to store larger files in an attempt to go all-in on cloud storage. Four years later, and I once again find value in having my crucial documents and files readily available without having to use a browser to get to them. And thanks to these LaCie and Seagate portable storage solutions, I’ve been able to do just that.
Over the past two months, I’ve been exclusively using LaCie’s Rugged SSD Pro and Backup Plus Portable hard drive. Both portable drives allow me to house all of those confidential and personal files and photos, but they are compact enough that all I have to do is toss one in my bag if I have to leave the house. LaCie was kind enough to allow me to pick not only the sizes but the colors that I wanted for each of these review units, but I tend to stick with black portable drives for no particular reason.
Lacie Rugged SSD Pro
The Rugged SSD Pro is available in Black only, with the Standard Rugged SSD model available in Orange. The Lacie Rugged SSD Pro is a secure and fast SSD system that allows you to not only have consistent performance but 256-bit hardware encryption for all of your personal information. This is typically my GO-TO hard drive for holding my work data, all of my backup GearDiary contacts, and personal photos.
Coming complete with a Thunderbolt 3 cable in the box, the Rugged SSD Pro can perform up to 2.8 Gbps, perfect for those more extensive libraries that you have taking up precious desktop space. Working from home, having this functionality allows me to quickly take large zip files, extract, and even combine them faster than I ever could using my alternatives of Dropbox or Google Drive — both of those require an internet connection and a monthly subscription. If I were to ever run out of space on the Rugged SSD Pro, I’d simply purchase another larger model for my stockpile.
The 1TB model that I have not only matches the 1TB of storage in my MacBook, but it manages storage like a champ. Being the first-ever SSD I’ve reviewed, coming from more traditional hard drives, this has been a delight to use. One caveat that I should mention, though, is that at ~5″, the included Thunderbolt 3 cable is pretty short. I found myself purchasing a separate cable for when I’m on the go until I had a friend show me how they attach their SSD to the back of their MacBook so they always have storage readily available and so they always know where the SSD is.
youtube
Just thinking that Apple would’ve charged me another $6-700 to add more storage to my MacBook was enough for me to consider SSD. What I enjoyed the most about it, though, is it has password protection, which allows me to secure my files properly. Family Photos, Passwords, and any other data that don’t want just sitting up in the cloud, in a service that could potentially end up hacked or canceled.
Thanks to LaCie’s ToolKit feature, not only can you sync with your computer and use it for Time Machine, but you can individually back up essential files, restore lost files, as well as continuously sync. But, of course, to do that, the drive would have to stay plugged into the laptop.
A lot of my friends use their SSDs for photo and video editing. But in my case, I use it for when we podcast weekly using Zoom. When I have the rugged SSD plugged into my MacBook, I can have our podcast shows automatically go into the SSD, which makes it easier to store without compromising any data speeds transfers or potentially losing the file. Before this, I had Zoom connected to Google Drive, which could be a potential disaster if Drive were to crash completely, or if my internet speeds caused the file not to upload correctly. I also can’t tell you how many times have attempted to download a large document or just a large file that could have been maybe 2-300 gigabytes, not realizing that my MacBook only had around 400 gigabytes left. Now with the Rugged SSD Pro, I never have these problems.
youtube
The Rugged SSD Pro by LaCie comes in 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB. My next goal is to get the 2TB or wait until LaCie eventually puts out more massive storage for the SSD Pro so I can use it to catalog my Plex Server with movies and TV shows on the go. The 1TB that I ve been using has a sequential read and write of 1000 MBps per second and a write of 950 MBps per second, which is pretty impressive.
Measuring 3.9″ long by 2.6″ wide by 0.7″ thick and weighing in at just under 100 grams, it is easy to see this is the “get up and go” SSD to beat. Not only is it able to survive drops, but its grippy design keeps it from sliding around on a desk or table. According to LaCie, it can handle drops up to three meters and even can be run over by a car, which is more than AppleCare covers on my relatively delicate MacBook Pro, so I’ll take it. The SSD is also waterproof, which I appreciate, especially when I’m working in a coffee shop. The waterproof USB-C port sits on the long end of the hard drive.
To test speeds, I copied my iPhone Pro Max Cloud backup folder from my desktop to the Lacie Rugged SSD Pro to see how long it would take. For the 8GB backup, it took a total of six minutes to download on standard internet. I’ve taken advantage of the workaround shown above to attach the SSD to my MacBook — using the cable and some 3M Adhesive tape that I stuck to the back of my MacBook case. So when I’m in a coffee shop, it’s not sitting on the table; it’s attached to the MacBook itself.
It’s worth mentioning that LaCie gives everyone who purchases the Rugged SSD Pro a one-month complimentary membership to Adobe’s Creative Cloud “All Apps” plan, which is fantastic. Adobe’s subscription model is overpriced, in my opinion, however. I haven’t used my complimentary membership yet, but I’m sure later down the line, I’ll check it out.
I like the fact that LaCie opted for putting the Thunderbolt 3 port at the top of the device versus on the side, because for some reason, I’ve had a habit of accidentally pulling the cables out while sitting at a desk, and that’s certainly not a good thing. On the side of the device, there’s a white power indicator that lets you know when it is connected to the computer and when it’s not, so that helps out a huge deal. The Lacie Rugged SSD is my go-to everyday SSD, and it travels with me in my tech bag everywhere I go. I used it while camped out in the hospital, and I found it to be durable and versatile. It got me through almost a week of horribly-postured typing sessions, including this article.
The Lacie Rugged SSD Pro retails for $401, and it is available from Amazon [affiliate link] and other retailers.
Source: Manufacturer supplied review sample
What I Like: Ultra-portable, and I can use interchangeably with my MacBook and iPad
What Needs Improvement: Thunderbolt 3 cable is a bit too short at 5 inches — Lacie should include a longer cable
  Seagate Backup Plus Portable
When I’m using my standing desk at home, though, I tend to use my Seagate Backup Plus Portable. Available in a variety of sizes in terms of onboard storage, I opted for the 5TB model. I’ve been attempting to set up my very own Plex Server since I’ve been home, and over the past month, it’s been going relatively well. I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with portable hard drives because of their internal spinning, constant overheating, and the eventual death and loss of everything stored on them.
The Seagate Backup Plus Portable comes with a trial for Adobe CC Photography and a one-year Mylio “Create” plan, both of which I completely disregarded but might be of use to someone else. Aside from that, the 5TB hard drive has a smaller footprint than many other hard drives at 4.5″ long by 3.15″ wide by 0.8″ thick.
The Backup Plus Portable works with both macOS and Windows 7 or higher. I almost exclusively use this hard drive to house all of my media, including videos and shows for Plex. The Backup Plus Portable can house up to 500,000 high-resolution photos, which Jess and I will likely do within three years, at the rate we’ve been taking pictures of baby Skylar. If you are storing video media, you can expect it to hold about 165 hours worth. This is great if you’re beginning your cable-cutting journey, or you decide you want to go fully digital and get rid of that collection of DVDs sitting in your basement.
We all know that external hard drives are useful tools for housing all of your files and data, but I’ve been impressed by what I’ve seen out of Seagate and Lacie. Their ability to give you a mobile solution like the Rugged SSD or allow you to hoard all of your photos, playlists, and documents on the Backup Plus is truly remarkable considering their prices are modest these days, especially compared to cloud services. Instead of paying the reoccurring monthly or yearly fees on these services, either of these backup solutions would be a great choice.
The 5TB Seagate Backup Plus Portable retails for $104.99, and it is available from Amazon [affiliate link] and other retailers.
Source: Manufacturer supplied review sample
What I Like: 5TB is an insane amount of storage for the price; Small footprint, can easily slide into a back pocket or backpack
What Needs Improvement: Nothing

New Apple Watch Series 3 38mm Space Gray Case Black Sport Band Cellular Unlocked
Item Description
Stay connected in style with the 38mm GPS + Cellular Apple Watch Series 3, which comes with a Space Gray anodized aluminum chassis and a black Sport band. Designed for users looking for the next generation of connectivity, Apple’s Watch moves your iPhone’s apps and functions to your wrist, so you can do more while leaving your phone in your pocket. This particular Series 3 Apple Watch also supports cellular connectivity. After setting it up with your carrier, you can use the Apple Watch without your phone at all.
Apple Watch connects to your iPhone via Bluetooth 4.2 and displays notifications, apps, and more on its 1.5″ display. It can also connect directly to the Internet thanks to 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. The internal battery lasts for up to 18 hours of normal use and is recharged with an included inductive magnetic charger.
Cellular Carrier Support
Connecting the Apple Watch Series 3 to a cellular network requires that it share the same carrier as your iPhone. Please note that some carriers may support the iPhone, but not the Apple Watch. Please confirm with your carrier that it supports Apple Watch on their network. Also note that cellular connectivity of the Apple Watch is setup independently of your iPhone. For any other questions regarding cellular functionality in regards to the Apple Watch, please contact your cellular provider.
Apps
Enjoy the iOS apps you love on your iPhone, tailored for Apple Watch.
Notifications
Leave your phone in your pocket and view notifications on your wrist. Apple Watch displays alerts from your iPhone so you can respond or dismiss them at will. Its Taptic engine gives you a gentle tap on your wrist or an audio cue when notifications come in.
GPS
Built-in GPS lets you navigate and get accurate workout data — no phone required. It connects quickly to GPS satellites and records distance, speed, and pace for your workout as well as the route you traveled and whether you’re walking, running, or cycling.
Water Resistant
The Apple Watch Series 3 is designed to withstand the pressure equivalent of being 164′ underwater (5 ATM), meaning that it’s suitable for rain, spills, showers, pools, and oceans at shallow depths. Its internal speaker uses its own vibrations to force water out once it’s clear of the waves.
Glances
Glances are scannable summaries of the information you need most. Simply swipe up from your watch face and you’ll instantly be able to do things like see what’s next on your calendar or find your location on a map.
Complications
Complications are small widgets that appear on the face of your Watch and provide quick access to frequently used data. You can customize which complications you’d like to appear, including built-in complications like weather, calendar, and activity, or complications from your installed apps.
Time Travel
Turn the Digital Crown to scroll through your complications and see what’s happening next or what already happened.
Siri
Talk to Apple’s digital assistant Siri just like you would on your iPhone to launch apps, record notes, search the web, reply to messages, and more. Simply hold down the digital crown or raise your wrist and say “Hey, Siri” to hear her respond.
Faces
Customize the face of your Apple Watch to fit your needs, from chronographs to digital faces to a model of the solar system. Add the complications of your choice to the watch face so you can see the information most important to you.
Health and Fitness
The Activity app displays progress made towards your daily activity goals with three intuitive rings that grow the more you move, finally closing when you hit your targets. The Stand ring shows how often you’ve stood up to take a break from sitting, the Move ring shows how many active calories you’ve burned, and the Exercise ring shows how many minutes of brisk activity you’ve completed. Swipe up from the bottom of the Watch to view active calories burned, steps taken, and distance traveled. You can also compete against friends and family and respond to notifications of their progress.
With more than 12 indoor and outdoor workouts to choose from, including lap and open-water swimming, biking, running, and elliptical, it’s easy to stay fit. The Watch learns swimmers’ strokes automatically, and wheelchair users can take advantage of chair-specific workouts with a variety of pushing techniques. A barometric altimeter logs stairs climbed and helps runners, cyclists, skiers, and snowboarders on their routes. There’s also high-intensity interval training for people who want to push even harder. Switch between back-to-back workouts and see a comprehensive summary of your results.
Your Watch senses your activity on its own, so there’s no need to enter it in manually. Goals can be adjusted manually or based on weekly suggestions from the Activity App. Third-party app support lets you interact with favorite fitness apps directly on your Watch, taking advantage of its heart rate sensor and motion sensors.
Heart Rate Monitor
Check your heart rate at any time with the Apple Watch’s built-in heart rate monitor. It uses an array of LEDs and sensors to photoplethysmographically determine how hard your heart is working. Every ten minutes, it attempts to take a reading, which is then stored in the Health App. Certain conditions, such as movement, extreme temperatures, and tattoos can interfere with readings.
Force Touch
Apple Watch senses how much pressure you use when you tap on its face, adding a new dimension to the ways you can interact with it. Press firmly to see additional controls, change watch faces, and more.
Taptic Engine
Instead of a vibration, the Apple Watch “taps” on your wrist to alert you to new notifications and respond to inputs. It gives different types of taps in different situations, so you can feel the difference between a call and a text message without looking.
Digital Touch
Connect with other Apple Watch users with Digital Touch. Users can send drawings with Sketch, gentle tap patterns with Tap, and even your heartbeat.
Apple Pay
Apple Pay is a secure mobile payment method that lets you pay for goods and services online and in-person without reaching for your wallet. You can add credit cards and rewards cards to Apple Pay, which does not store card numbers on your device or share them with merchants.
To pay with your Apple Watch, simply double-click the side button and hold the display of Apple Watch up to the contactless reader. A gentle tap and beep confirm that your payment information was sent.
Music
When your iPhone is in range, you can use your Apple Watch to control what’s playing. You can also listen to locally-stored music without an iPhone when using Bluetooth headphones or AirPods.
Calls
Take a call with your Apple Watch’s built-in speakerphone or transfer it to your iPhone.
Battery
Thanks to the power-efficient S3 processor and W2 communications chip, your Apple Watch lasts up to 18 hours on a charge.
Nightstand
Place your Apple Watch on its side and connect the included magnetic charger to activate Nightstand mode, which displays the time, date, and alarm when you touch the screen, digital crown, or side button. When your alarm sounds, press the Digital Crown to snooze or the side button to turn it off altogether.
Design
The Apple Watch is made from aluminum and is designed for strength and light weight. The display is covered by Ion-X aluminosilicate glass, which is molecularly fortified through ion exchange. The back panel is made from a composite.
Activation Lock
Activating your Apple Watch requires your iCloud Apple ID and password, so your information will stay safe even if your Watch is lost or stolen.

iPad
The 9.7-inch iPad (6th Generation, 32GB), the latest iPad and our top pick for the best tablet, is currently $60 off at Target, bringing the price down to $250.
The 6th-generation 9.7-inch iPad—the latest non-Pro iPad, which debuted back in March—is likely to see some decent deals. Already Apple’s least-expensive tablet at $330, the base 32 GB model is regularly on sale for around $290. Target will be selling it for $250, as will Costco.
You might also find stores selling the 2017 5th-generation iPad, which is almost identical to the current 9.7-inch model except that it doesn’t support the Apple Pencil and has a slower processor. If you can find the 5th-gen model for around $200, snap it up. If you prefer the iPad mini-size, it’ll be $150 off at Target, down to $250.

New Apple hardware doesn’t get discounted often, but Adorama has the 512 GB 2018 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar in space gray for $2,500, a $300 discount. Normally, $2,500 would get you a configuration with a 256 GB SSD, so you’re essentially getting the 512 GB model for the 256 GB price. The full specs include a six-core Intel Core i7 2.6 GHz processor, 16 GB RAM, an AMD Radeon Pro 560X graphics card, and a 512 GB SSD. This is the upcoming pick for our guide to the best MacBook for photo and video editing.
B&H Photo has the 2018 MacBook Air on sale for $1,070, a $130 discount. But since the laptop is new, orders are now on a first-come-first-served basis. This configuration comes with a 128 GB SSD, 8 GB of RAM, and a 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5 Dual-Core processor. This is the upcoming pick for our guide to the best MacBooks.

If you have an iPhone 8 or newer you can use a wireless charger, and you might want this Anker PowerPort Wireless 5 Stand for $17 with an on-page coupon. It’s highly functional on a bedside table or a desk – you can charge while you Facetime.
The Totallee iPhone X Case, our pick for the best superthin case for the iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and X is down to $6 in several colors on Amazon. It typically goes for $10, and it’s a good choice if you’re more concerned about protecting your iPhone from scratches than from a drop.
Amazon also has the Kanex USB C to VGA Adapter, our pick for the best USB-C to VGA adapter, for $16. That’s a $4 discount on the usual $20 price. This adapter rarely goes on sale, and it’s handy if you need to connect your USB-C only MacBook Pro to a projector or other VGA devices.
If you’ve just purchased an iPhone XS Max you’ll want to protect it and this Speck Presidio Folio case is one of our top picks. Its currently $25 at Amazon which means you’ll be getting at least 50 percent off. A smaller version of the case is also discounted in some colors at $22.
The Mophie Juice Pack Air for iPhone 7/8 Plus is down to $35 in black and gold. You can save up to $25 which is a solid deal. The Mophie Juice Pack Air is the best battery case for the iPhone 7/8 Plus in our guide to the best 7/8 Plus cases.

This deal is in-store only, but Walmart is offering a $300 gift card with purchase of our current best smartphone pick, the iPhone XR, for activation on Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T. Also included in this deal are the iPhone XS and the larger iPhone XS Max. Walmart is doing deals on older iPhone models, too: The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X all come with a $400 Walmart gift card, though the carriers are once again limited to Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T (sorry, T-Mobile customers).
Target has a similar iPhone deal, but with substantially less store credit with older iPhone models. It’s offering a $150 gift card if you buy an iPhone X, 8, or 8 Plus on an AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon installment plan, or a $250 gift card with an iPhone XS or XS Max.
Tips for finding Cyber Monday and Black Friday deals on Apple products
In general, you shouldn’t look for deals at Apple’s own stores or on its website: This time of year, the company usually offers only gift cards, instead of lower prices, when you buy products—and even when Apple does offer cash-off deals, they’re often not substantial discounts. You’ll likely find better savings from other retailers.
You also shouldn’t expect great deals on the very newest items—the new iPhone XR or Apple Watch Series 4, for example. But those that have been around for longer—especially previous-generation models—often see decent discounts. Here’s what we expect to see among Apple-focused holiday sales; we’ll be updating this article over the next few weeks with the latest info. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions or suggestions for what else to cover here. (You can also use our feedback form or hit us up on Twitter.)
The Apple Shopping Event
Apple has announced its own Apple Shopping Event from November 23-26. Just like last year, no cash discounts are being offered, but rather gift cards with purchase of certain items. This is not the type of deal we usually suggest to our readers, but if you were already planning to buy a device directly from Apple, you’d might as well take Apple Store credit.
Unfortunately, but unsurprisingly, no gift cards are being offered on Apple’s latest hardware. There is no offer for the iPhone XR, XS, or XS Max, the Apple Watch Series 4, the new MacBook Air, or the latest iPad Pros.
If you need a SIM-card free iPhone 7 or 8, Apple is throwing in a $50 gift card. For an iPad pro (10.5-inch), iPad, or iPad Mini 4, they’re giving out $100 gift cards. The Apple Watch Series 3 will get you a $50 gift card, as will a HomePod or Beats headphones. Finally, several of Apple’s Mac computer and laptop models will earn you a $200 gift card.
What about sales on refurbished Apple gear?
If you see a “too good to be true” price on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, make sure it isn’t for a refurbished unit, which is a device that has been returned or repaired. With the exception of refurbished products that Apple itself sells, refurbs usually have a shorter warranty than new models and no guarantee of quality.
Buying a refurbished product directly from Apple, on the other hand, is a safe bet. Based on our own experiences and many reports from other people and publications, Apple’s refurbished products are every bit as reliable as new ones and almost always cosmetically indistinguishable. They also come with a full one-year Apple warranty and are eligible for Apple’s optional AppleCare extended warranty. In other words, you’re getting something that’s basically new at a significant discount.
In fact, before you take advantage of a retailer’s Black Friday or Cyber Week deal on an Apple device, check out Apple’s refurbished section on its website. If the retailer’s Black Friday price is still considerably higher than buying the same product refurbished from Apple, it’s not a deal—buy from the source instead.
iPad Pro
Photo: Michael Hession
We don’t expect to see substantial discounts on the newest iPad Pro models, announced at Apple’s October media event, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see previous-generation models on sale at significant discounts. Although the new Pro models have new designs, use Face ID instead of Touch ID, and are faster, last year’s models are still great tablets that offer significant screen and camera upgrades over non-Pro iPads.
Apple Watch
Photo: Sarah Kobos
Last year Apple released the Apple Watch Series 3 just prior to Black Friday and Cyber Week, and the only store that offered a deal on that model was Kohl’s: $90 in Kohl’s Cash when you bought the Series 3 at full price. Given that the Series 4 is so new, we expect a similar situation this year.
However, you’ll likely find good deals on the now-year-old Series 3, our budget pick for iPhone-compatible smartwatches. Target’s ad lists the Series 3 as starting at $200, which is $80 off the base price. If you want the LTE-enabled option, it’ll also be $80 cheaper. We prefer the Series 4 for its larger screen and better performance, but the Series 3 is still a good option for anyone buying their first smartwatch.

Every Android Phone, Ranked
There are something like one million Android phones for every person on the planet right now (plus or minus one). On the other hand, Lenovo recently announced that the entire Phab series of smartphones will not be updated to Nougat despite being less than a year old. You do not need to press hard on the display to control the mobile device, making them responsive and easy to use. From there, finalists were chosen based on how well the devices scored in the key comparison points above, and with that, the following phones rose to the top. Enabling the " Limit Ad Tracking " option here will ensure that apps do not use your device's unique identifier in any way other than for "limited advertising purposes." This is different than the Android devices in this list, which will let you reset your ad-tracking ID and even opt out of being served targeted ads, but will not allow you to limit apps' abilities to view and use your unique ID. It has a solid design and build, coupled with a display and performance that punches well beyond its price point. The Sunrise is a 3.8" touchscreen device with Android 4.4 and runs on GSM networks. Upload up to 50,000 songs and play them from your devices with Google Play Music. It is the smallest smartphone from Tracfone at this time, but has a 3.2 MP camera and was released in 2013. Once installation is complete, this mobile phone tracking application can be uninstalled remotely from the target device. After failing in the windows smartphone Nokia is back in 2017-18 with new android Smartphone leaked as Nokia P1. So in this guide we will try to cover specification of Nokia P1. The Nokia P1 is expected to launch with a 5.5 inch display with 2K Amoled display resolution and 401 PPI color.love status in hindi Mi makes products in various categories like mobiles, mobile headphones and headsets, speakers, air purifiers, mobile power banks, mobile cases and covers, tablets, headphones and earphones, smart bands, mobile chargers. Regardless, the Meizu Pro 7 Plus tends to circle around £488 and at that price, makes it one of the best, and most intriguing, smartphones you can buy in 2017. And add in that 16MP camera with optical image stabilization and the LG G4 is a hard Android phone to pass up. The HTC U11 is a strong contender for the title of best phone for audiophiles, but the V30 wins thanks to its digital filters and sound presets, headphone jack, bigger battery, more polished design and its fantastic dual camera, all of which promise a better experience overall. As for the design, the device appears to be bulky because of lots of space above and below the screen and a thickness of 9mm. Bottom Line: The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active takes the best phone of the year, makes it tougher, and packs in a bigger battery. Google caught a lot of flak for the Pixel 2 XL's POLED display issues, regardless of whether the problems were real or perceived. No doubts, the Hot S certainly deserves a spot on this list, with innovative features like premium design and a fingerprint sensor all under the price of NGN49,000 (KES 15,700) makes the phone a very good contender for the number one spot in the list of best android phones in 2016. QMobile priced at everyone's reach, offers numerous new Android mobile phones & tablets at very affordable prices, and that too with several high end features like Dual-SIM, Wi-Fi & QWERTY etc. The makers of the Nokia 3 though are Finnish have now made it to the list of top Indian mobile companies by considering the quotient of trust and customer service providing abilities. Designed for the way you live, LG mobile phones give you access to the latest technology and newest features, plus all the essentials - like email, talk and text messaging. The XL also runs on Android 8 with all the smoothness you'd expect a device designed by the same company as the software to. It sports an 835 Snapdragon processor, a beautiful 12.2MP back camera and an 8MP front camera - the former with a dual-pixel tech that gives you depth of field flexibility - and the Active Edge sensor functionality that calls up Google Assistant. Other downsides are the lack of sandboxed user spaces, as well as the fact that you have to reset the device and enable "Supervised Mode" if you want to use an encrypted VPN service with your mobile data connection instead of just Wi-Fi. If you like taking photos with your phone, you'll be very pleased with the Pixel 2's 12.2 MP camera. Like in most Samsung devices, the Fingerprint reader rests on its front at home button. Gionee's M7 Plus is a high-end large smartphone that features a 6.43" 1080x2160 (376 PPI) AMOLED display, an Octo-core snapdragon 660 chipset, 6GB Of RAM, 128GB of storage, a microSD slot, 16MP camera and Dual-SIM. It's got an impressive camera, a great display, fast performance, and a fantastic design. Many of the best Black Friday deals are available online, and we've got the best list of cell phones and Tracfone related items on sale. We wanted to create a resource for consumers who were looking at buying an Android phone from Tracfone and provide a clear list of the phones, with comparison details. Starting with the foreign brands in India, let's talk about where they have set up their shop for making phones in India. It says that the 1st Nokia Android smartphone will take entry in 2017 and the launch will happen at MWC per the rumored tow variants of Nokia phone will be launched, Nokia D1C and other not revealed yet, as per recent news first variant will around Rs10K around (K$150) for 2GB RAM and Rs 20K around ($200) for 3GB Ram model. The handset's highlight is its camera software — algorithms place two frames over one another to boost the megapixel count of the Pixel's rear and front-facing shooters. Samsung has once again taken the top spot of the best Android phone in the world right now. The phones in our list range from genuinely small, like the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, to a hulking phablet, the ZTE Blade Z Max. LG's V series has traditionally been a big and brawny phone, but in 2017 the V30 is just a great overall device that has handily taken over from the G6 launched earlier this year. The first three Android One phones were produced by Micromax, Karbonn, and Spice, three popular brands in India. The PRIV will automatically wipe all user data when someone enters the wrong password or PIN ten times, which is a security measure BlackBerry has added on top of stock Android And much like Silent Circle's approach with the Blackphone 2, BlackBerry has included a security center app called DTEK that will help you keep track of app permissions and inform you when there's a security issue that needs to be addressed. We have the best offers of mobile phones available in UAE. HMD Global Oy is the exclusive licensee of the Nokia brand for phones & tablets. Oppo's A79 is an mid-range smartphone that features a 6" 2180x1080 (18:9) AMOLED display, a Mediatek Helio P23 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, Micro-SD slot and a 16 MP camera. LG finally gets its foot in the door with its second-line flagship phone V 10. V 10 is a mighty device comes not only with 4GB RAM but also with a 2K display, Fingerprint reader 2 and a powerful Snapdragon 808 CPU. 21MP primary camera, 8MP front camera, 6GB RAM, Snapdragon 820 CPU, USB Type C 1.0 reversible connector, 5.7 inches quad-HD display, QuickCharge 3, fingerprint scanner are other features worth-mentioning. Interestingly, this is a good addition to the make in India mobile phones list. Click here to find mobiles using filters related to price, features, brands etc. This phone from the house of Reliance is among one of the Made in India mobile phones we have been talking about on this list. Currently phones with 4GB RAM are few, but the number of such phones is likely to increase exponentially by the last quarter of 2015.

Review + comparison: iRig Pre HD cross platform audio interface
In this article, I’ll review the new <US$100 iRig Pre HD cross platform audio interface, with preamp and A-to-D converter. If this sounds familiar, it’s because it was only 3 months ago that I reviewed the >US$150 iRig Pro I/O, whose notable missing feature was latency-free monitoring. The new <US$100 iRig Pre HD indeed has true latency-free monitoring, costs US$50 less, although it lacks MIDI. When I say “multi-platform”, I mean compatibility Apple’s Lightning connector (used on all current iOS devices, including the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch) and USB for compliant-Android, Chromebook, Mac and Windows devices. I am also including a 9-point pro/con comparison to its closest competitor on the market, the <US$150 i-XLR from RØDE (which is Lightning-only), including a test recording to hear the preamp and A-to-D quality, specs and practical pros/cons, and a “How to choose” section.
Comparison chart
Test recordings
The following iRig Pre HD (Amazon • B&H) test recording was made using the Shure SM58 dynamic microphone (Amazon • B&H) using my Google Android Pixel XL phone (Amazon • B&H) and the free Auphonic app at 48 kHz WAV mono. It was normalized to -16 LUFS, trimmed and uploaded as 48kHz WAV mono.
https://www.provideocoalition.com/app/uploads/iRig-Pre-HD-with-SM58.wav
Preamp gain and cleanliness
IK Multimedia has not published any spec for the official maximum gain of the iRig Pre HD (Amazon — B&H), but based on my observations, it seems to be approximately +60dB max. With the Shure SM58 (Amazon • B&H) , I had to set it about 64% to get our desired -12dB in raw recordings. However, I was happily surprised to hear a clear signal even at near max. In fact, it seems much cleaner than the preamps in the <US$270 Zoom H5 recorder (whose max gain is officially +52db, (Amazon • B&H) when both are at near max. Fortunately, with the iRig Pro I/O, I didn’t hear hiss or noise, as typically happens when you bring most preamps near to the max. The Shure SM58 dynamic microphone is not the gain hungriest dynamic mic on the planet, and it isn’t the hottest either, but it is much more so than most condenser mics. The SM57 and SM58 are closer to the middle of the dynamic mic spectrum. If you plan to use the iRig Pro I/O with one of the gain-hungriest dynamic mics, like the Audio Technica RE20 or the Shure SM7B,
you should add a pre-preamp like the FetHead (shown above, B&H link), which would be powered from the iRig Pro I/O’s phantom power function. In this case, the phantom power would power the FetHead, not the mic, and the FetHead would not send any phantom power to the dynamic mic. Normally, you would leave phantom power OFF when connecting the iRig Pro I/O directly to a dynamic mic, which is what I did with the direct connection to the Shure SM58.
On the other hand, as covered in my review of the i-XLR (Amazon link • B&H link), RØDE has explained that the i-XLR has a max of +80dB. That is plenty of gain for even the hungriest dynamic mic. With the palindromic Shure 545, I had to set the i-XLR’s gain to absolute minimum to get -12db (with the attenuator Off). However, the i-XLR is a one trick pony (iOS only/Lightning only) and does not officially offer phantom power. The i-XLR is intended to be used with dynamic mics or self-powered condenser mics (i.e. with batteries inside).
SUMMARY FOR THIS SECTION: The iRig Pre HD (Amazon — B&H) has sufficient clean gain for a dynamic mic like the Shure palindromic 545 mic or SM58. The iRig Pre HD has more than sufficient clean gain for a condenser mic or hotter dynamic mics like the Senal ENG-18RL (reviewed here, B&H). If you need to connect an even hungrier dynamic mic with the iRig Pre HD (like an ElectroVoice RE20 or Shure SM7B), consider getting a pre-preamp like the FetHead (B&H link) to complement the iRig Pre HD.
Sampling frequency and resolution
Fortunately, both the iRig Pre HD and the i-XLR offer 48kHz, the absolute standard for audio sampling for video production and distribution. See my related article All audio production & distribution should go 48 kHz.
In addition, both the iRig Pre HD and the i-XLR offer its 2x cousin, 96kHz. Finally, the iRig Pre HD also offers 44.1 (a throwback to the ancient CD-Audio standard. Not recommended for video) and its 2x cousin, 88.2 kHz (not recommended for video either).
In terms of resolution, fortunately both also offer 24-bit. See my related article: Understanding 24-bit vs 16-bit audio production & distribution to understand the advantages of recording 24-bit even when not planning to distribute 24-bit.
Hardware compatibility
The iRig Pre HD is extremely versatile, including compatibility for compliant Android, Chromebook, macOS, iOS, Windows, including necessary cables, except for Androids that use Micro-USB-OTG or USB-C. Unlike the iRig Pro I/O I covered back in August, the iRig Pre HD does not include MIDI.
On the other hand, the i-XLR is a one-trick-pony, offering only iOS via the Lightning port.
Clarifying the phantom power situation
The new iRig Pre HD absolutely offers switchable 48-volt phantom power, either to power a condenser microphone, or to power a FetHead (B&H ) if necessary to use with an extremely gain-hungry dynamic mic like an RE-20 or SM7B.
The i-XLR officially offers no phantom power. However, some other users and I have discovered that it does power a few XLR condenser mics that demand very low voltage.
CONCLUSIONS FOR THIS SECTION: The iRig Pro HD works great with phantom-powered condenser mics (with phantom power ON), medium-to-hot dynamic mics (with phantom power OFF) or (optionally) with very demanding dynamic mics via a FetHead (with phantom power ON). On the other hand, the i-XLR works great with any dynamic mic (including those that are very gain-hungry), or a small group of condenser mics that have a very low voltage requirement.
Live monitoring
Unlike its two predecessors, the new iRig Pre HD has a 3.5 mm jack for a stereo 3.5 mm headphone including hardware-based latency free monitoring! This means two things:
You can use any app to record audio-only or video with audio, even one that doesn’t offer live monitoring.
There will be no latency.
There is an ON/OFF switch in case you don’t want to hear yourself. In either position, you can still hear playback from the host device, or the voice of the other person if you are connected live via Allo, FaceTime, Hangouts, Skype, etc. It is aso confirmed that (just like the i-XLR), the iRig Pre HD will also work properly even if you connect a TRRS headset, and will intelligently ignore its microphone.
See my TS/TRS/TRRS/TRRRS: Combating the misconnection epidemic (illustrated above).
Conclusions, and how to choose a single-source XLR interface for your mobile device
I titled the this section as such, because it is not feasible to give a summary of advice for a laptop or desktop computer, given the enormous number of desktop/AC-powered options available, of which there are also many, and I have reviewed several before. That’s why this summary and guide is for mobile devices only, i.e. phones and tablets, and for a single-source XLR.
IF YOUR PHONE OR TABLET IS ANDROID
If your phone or tablet is Android and compliant, and you want to record from a single XLR source while bypassing the (typically inferior) preamp and A-to-D converter in your Android device (if it even exists), then the iRig Pre HD (Amazon • B&H) is your only logical option, since the i-XLR does not work with Android at all. Just remember to get your appropriate cable or adapter, depending upon the connection of your compliant Android.
IF YOUR PHONE OR TABLET IS/ARE EXCLUSIVELY iOS If your phone or tablet is iOS (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) and you don’t have any need to use your audio interface with a different platform beyond, and you also want to record from a single XLR source while bypassing the (typically inferior) preamp and A-to-D converter (which disappeared anyway starting with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus) then other factors should affect your decision:
If you want to use a condenser microphone that requires 48-volt phantom power, the iRig Pro I/O is your only logical choice, despite any other consideration.
If you want to use MIDI, the under <US$150 iRig Pro I/O I reviewed in August is your only logical choice, despite any other consideration.
If you really love the tally and Record/Pause feature onboard (at present, only with the free RØDE Reporter app), you will likely favor the i-XLR (Amazon • B&H), although it will cost you US$50 more, and it will work with iOS devices only.
