I gotta comment on Romeo and audience reactions because yes I love Romeo (only after actively joining the Fandom though) and he's a silly guy but I (and most of the fandom) also understand that it's not about him!! That it's about Juliet!! That he doesn't have a real personality at first because of how the musical is written!!

Anne wants to humanize Juliet & Co, wants to give Juliet the life she never had and live through her, and later gives her the gift of free will. She doesn't focus on Juliet because she hates Romeo, she focuses on Juliet because women are often used to further the male characters story and add tragedy (this is less common in modern age theater but the musical is about Shakespeare, so yeah). Anne just sees a girl who has her whole life ahead of her and deserves better than Shakespeare, but that ultimately leaves Romeo to be pupeteered by William.

"[Romeo's] legend becomes so powerful thatyj when he actually returns, it's hard for anyone to see him as a real person." Everyone knows Romeo, He's THE teen idol of Verona, but Romeo doesn't know himself. Unlike Anne, William writes Romeo as this shallow guy to use for his own personal gains with no regards for Romeo as a person. He has no depth, making him lowkey an asshole, but also makes him this likeable funny side character. His character is meant to be centered around Juliet, like how a lot of female characters are centered around the male main characters. Even when he gets to be his own character at the end and doesn't immediately gets back together with Juliet, she's still unreplaceable.

I hope it's clear that this is not a "I hate Romeo" rant, because I love his character, but I'm tired of seeing people being obsessed with him and even villainizing female characters (like Anne and Juliet) because of it. If you wanna hate on someone for hurting him or whatever, you should hate on William. (hate him him for everything actually /J!!)

Basically, Juliet and Romeo are reflections of Anne and William untill the quill breaks.
