Another annual Mermaid AU illustration! 5 years of the same ipad on the same app with the same default brush set. Developing a style sure has been a journey with a lot of struggle, but I'm happy with my progress. I think I've finally reached a happy balance between realism and cartoon-ish stylization that eluded me for so long.

time!Skater is the Skater Cookie from the post season 6 story mode universe. As stated in his fake description, this Skater Cookie never met gingerbrave and friends, instead being raised in the space-time continuum by Timekeeper.

for those who were my mutual in 2021 when I was a edit+hc request blog, you may remember time!Skater actually. shoutout @foggymud cuz they developed the idea with me and it was really fun! He used to look like this:

After getting back into cr 2 years after loosing interest, I wanted to develop time!Skater using the og concept and cleaning up the design.

I would come to forego the pink icing hair. I really like pink and liked his hair, but in practice, it didn’t fit at all with the modern design. It was too jarring and out of place, so for my modern skater renditions I give him brown hair.

The og time!skater also wasn’t older than prime!skater, evidenced by his youthful appearance+usage of the canon sprites as a base. I decided to age up the modern incarnation of the character for both character and design motives; I wanted to portray a sharper, more weathered cookie while still keeping the youthful air that prime has. Making him a preteen felt like a waste and making him a young adult felt wrong character-wise, so a vaguely teenaged skater felt best.

speaking of sharpness, I incorporated real shape language and balance into this modern Time’s design. (for simplicity, I’ll refer to time!Skater as Time, and the regular/pre-6 timeline Skater as Prime.) I used a balance strategy of “thin center with large, flashy sleeves and pants”, where the og design had the large sleeves + tucked-in shirt and it ended up feeling too middle-heavy. I also added some sharper points to Time this time around to balance out all the round and give a slightly more “edgy” appearance I suppose?

I liked the old Time design’s outfit ok, aside from the aforementioned issues, but it felt a tad bit unoriginal. I wanted to keep the essence of the old design, but also incorporate more interesting colors and thought-out shapes.

The use of CookieRun’s signature time-coded gold was one major thing I wanted this time around, adding little splashes of it in the hair and outfit. Trying to show both Prime’s essence and the affects time has had on Time’s personality.

the eyes are different too! in the og design they were this weird multi-color gummy colors? It had the same issue as the pink hair; too clash-y imo. So modern Time’s are a cryptic yellow sclera with blue pupil (if you saw the teaser post Yk what I’m talking abt).

LittleMissSquiggles’ Summary of Art 2023

Honestly folks, I don't got much to say about this year. This might just be my shortest art summary to date since I don't have much to comment on this year's events.

2023 was a general mix of highs and lows but overall, not a bad year. You could say that this was the year I was more work-oriented.

I focused more on work especially during the early half of this year, between January and July and therefore didn't spend much time on personal projects; specifically 3D. That being said, I did end up getting back up to my art. Since I've been more focused on 3D for the past two years, I chose this year to get back into my 2D art doing illustrative work since I missed it.

More than that, I took this year to spend some well needed time improving my drawing skills, using tools and techniques from my 3D workflow in an attempt to improve my illustrative work and needless to say, I think it worked out great, even if the end results wasn't much.

Some squiggly good accomplishments I achieved in 2023:

Started the year employed and while I had to juggle two job opportunities which had its fair share of ups and downs in more ways than one, at least it allowed me the chance to earn the funds I needed to obtain my new workstation: a Lenovo Ideacentre 5 Gaming PC.

Learned about the almighty power of networking and remote desktops thanks to my contract job which allowed to me to transform my current setup into one that fully connects and maximizes the full use of all the devises in my arsenal. Basically I figured out how to connect my previous laptop to my new PC so now I work with a setup where my laptop acts as a third monitor for my PC while I'm able to access all my files from my laptop from my PC. Ontop of that, I also learnt how to connect my PC to my Ipad Mini, not just for transferring files for art but for also using it as a proxy computer device to remote into my main PC workstation. This may not seem like a big deal to most but for someone who didn't know a thing about most of this stuff up until this year, it makes a huge difference to this squiggle meister.

Gained a new four-legged member to the squiggle meister family household. A playfully mischievous yet adorable Husky-mix pup fittingly named Alaska or the "Wee Las" as I like to call her.

Experimented a lot with my art this year and while I may not have shared all of the fruits of my labour to social media, I have been making quite a few strides. ---- I spent the last couple of years pushing my social media presence and while I have benefitted from it from time to time, I missed out on just taking some time to myself; getting back to indulging in other activities that brought me joy; particularly the ones that involve truly honing my craft.

I hope to maintain this type of vibe moving forward towards the new year.

Even if my social media activity won't be as frequent as previous years, I do hope that those who have been following and supporting me and my work over years still continue to do so, even if it's to simply just check in from time to time.

To conclude my post, as always, I'm wishing everyone all the very, very best in their respective lives and daily endevours for the upcoming new year.

Apple M4 Powers Up the iMac: Blazing Speed for Creatives

Apple M4 chips may be introduced when Apple updates the 24-inch iMac in 2024. Apple intends to update the Mac series, including the iMac, with AI-focused M4 CPUs. This document details Apple’s M4 iMac ambitions.

Apple M4

Apple may incorporate the M4 chip from the latest iPad Pro models in the forthcoming 24-inch iMac. Since iMacs have M3 chips, the M4 will be a direct upgrade.

Apple M4 is a second-generation chip based on the M3’s 3-nanometer technology with performance and efficiency improvements. Apple M4 CPU outscored M3 chip by 25% in Geekbench benchmark test, suggesting considerable performance boost.

The Apple M4 had 3,695 single-core and 14,550 multi-core scores, compared to 3,087 and 11,702 for the M3.

Apple’s M4 processor has a 10-core GPU and CPU with four performance and six efficiency cores. Apple uses an M4 with a 9-core CPU in the iPad Pro, but the iMac may not have it.

Other Macs will have upgraded M4 Pro, M4 Max, and M4 Ultra CPUs, while the 24-inch iMac, which is equal in price to the MacBook Air, will only have the M4 chip.

No signs suggest Apple will revamp the iMac soon the last overhaul was in 2021. The 2024 iMac refresh may focus internal improvements over exterior design changes.

Computers and displays are merged in the iMac. It fits on a desktop due to its narrow profile and 11.5mm thickness. It has a pastel chin and comes in bright shades.

They know of no iMac enhancements other than the Apple M4 chip.

Larger iMac?

Despite rumours, a 30-inch iMac was still in development in mid-2023. Its release date is unknown. As of May 25, 2024, Apple has no larger iMac. Current 24-inch iMacs include M3 chips. In 2024, rumours of a bigger iMac with an M-series CPU had faded. Apple hasn’t confirmed a 30-inch model for 2025.

Expect a larger iMac: Rumours say Apple may sell a larger iMac in the future.

Connect Mac to external display: You can add a larger external monitor to your iMac or Mac mini. This maximises screen space and lets you choose size and resolution.

Consider Mac Studio: The Mac Studio is fast and may be used with a larger display for a strong desktop arrangement.

Launch Day

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman expected a 24-inch iMac M4 processor update “around the end of the year.” The iMac may launch at October or November Apple events with new Macs. Pre-year MacBook Pro and Mac mini improvements are anticipated. Since the iMac was updated in October 2023, an October 2024 release would conclude the year.

The M4 processor outperforms the M3 with a 10-core CPU (6 efficiency and 4 performance) and GPU. Hardware-accelerated ray tracing and 16-core Neural Engine are featured. The M4 iMac could handle video editing and 3D rendering.

They expect the new iMac to have a 24-inch Retina 4.5K display like the M3 model. Apple may possibly offer more colours for the upcoming iMac, like the M2 model. The M4 iMac will be a major upgrade from the M3. Keep an eye out for Apple’s M4-powered iMac later this year if you want a powerful and adaptable desktop.

SSDs start at 256GB and RAM up to 2TB.

Standard unified memory is 8GB, customisable to 16GB.

Dual SDXC card slots, USB-C connections, Thunderbolt 4 connectors.

From last update, there was no mention of a “M4 iMac.” Apple regularly updates their products with newer processors and features. Apple’s custom Mac CPUs are generally labelled “M”.

The M1 chip, which delivered exceptional performance and energy economy, changed Apple’s desktop and laptop computers. An M4 iMac may use this special silicon to boost power and efficiency. I prefer Apple’s official releases or trusted tech sources for the most accurate and current information.

A Random Valhalla Fanfic Snippet

A couple of years ago, I replaced my iPad mini with an iPad, and since then, I’ve not really looked in the notes app. And the thing is, I used to write all my fanfic there. The notes app was basically broken and refused to move things to the cloud, so I used to email them to myself. But there were things I never bothered to move.

Anyway, in the search for old login details today, I booted up ye olde iPad mini, and on a whim, peeped into my notes app. I really had forgotten the volume of writing I’d left behind.

The good news is the app & cloud decided to oblige me at last, and all my writing has now been moved from the local drive to the cloud - hooray!

It opened on a snippet of AC Valhalla fic that I have no recollection of writing. I have no idea where it was going. I don’t think I knew even in March of 2021.

But heck. I’m posting it here because I felt like I was visiting old friends for a moment, and maybe someone else might like to as well. Nostalgia: my besetting sin :)

Petra was up before the rest of the village most days, and this morning was no different. It was just as the world began to tip from dark to light, while the seasons began to tip from light to dark - the beginning of autumn, the air redolent with smoke, and the soft drip of rain from the eves into thick leaves below.

As she slung her bow and quiver over her shoulder and ducked out the door, a breeze was blowing high in the landmark tree, flapping the green banners against the lightening sky, and she could just make out the shifting shapes of clouds - she thought it likely to rain again before midday.

She cut through the town, heading towards the western edge of the village down near the river; passing the bureau where she caught a glimpse of Hytham rubbing his eyes in candlelight, a scroll already in hand though not yet unrolled; then she passed the cartographers and Swanburrow’s home, and there the woods took over.

She could always breathe easier beyond the small community. Being in the forest, the quiet of the hunt - that was what she lived for.

It’d been difficult in the first years, when she and Eivor had briefly been seeing each other. She’d hoped for more, but the whole time knowing deep down that that was more than she could really hope for; so when it’d petered out, she hadn’t been surprised.

What she hadn’t expected was Ubba Ragnarsson. When he’d appeared in the village and taken up his place as Eivor’s consort, there’d been real bitterness. Seeing them together, so totally in love, was enough to make her sick. She was ashamed now of the times she had tried to persuade Wallace to leave the village. Fortunately, he’d only shaken his head and told her he’d warned her not to get involved, and she’d just have to learn to live with it.

They hadn’t talked for a time; but that too had passed. And she had learnt to live with it, though it was still not easy sometimes…

She pushed these thoughts aside as she reached the quiet rustle of the woods. Hunting required concentration. There was no time to dwell.

Hytham heard rather than saw Petra passing outside, and glanced out into the relative darkness to gauge how long it would be before the sun came up.

He’d agreed to meet with Olsen, the cartographer, early. He’d returned to Ravensthorpe from Lunden with a new map he promised Hytham he’d want to see. Hytham had suggested he show him it straight away - sleep, like everything else, could wait - but it’d been very late, and Olsen said laughingly that he wanted to bathe and get some rest.

Hytham didn’t understand this weakness to fatigue. He slept little and lightly himself, but he knew better than to press him. He’d learnt the hard way to bend to the needs of others...

There was the sudden clanging of the bell at the Jomsviking Hall, carried across the town on the wind. Eivor was awake then, he thought, preparing to go on a raid.

Hytham frowned. He didn’t understand their obsession with that particular activity at all; but he added with a sigh to himself, people in general were an enigma to him.

Vagn was woken by the bell. He stirred, but by his side Earys sat bolt upright.

‘That fucking bell,’ she said, and hastily stood to dress. ‘I swear I’m going to fling it in the river.’

‘You’ll do no such thing,’ Vagn said comfortably, smiling happily at her as she stormed towards the door. He loved to see her angry. At her infernal best.

She paused before going outside to blow him a kiss, then she was gone.

Vagn lingered lazily for a moment. He could hear both Eivor and Ubba talking outside with a cluster of keen Jomsvikingr in preparation for the raid.

He should get up. He would get up. Any moment now…

Eivor’s lieutenant, Varfeitr, saw Earys leaving Vagn’s hut and raised a hand in respectful greeting.

She nodded and passed on, and he turned to Eivor.

‘Rollo wants to come with us. He’s been petitioning me relentlessly.’

Eivor grinned.

‘Rollo! I thought he had his hands full?’

Tove, who’d been sleeping with him since Yule, had caught him making eyes and crude suggestions to Sunniva when he’d drunk too much ale. Sunniva had, of course, laughed in his face, and told him she had more than enough trouble with two lovers and a small daughter - but Tove had been wildly furious, no matter how many times he’d apologised.

Varfeitr smiled. ‘He does - I think that’s why he wants to come.’

Eivor considered this. ‘Alright. Take orders to the barracks. Tell him he can go. You’ll raid along the border of Snotinghamscire. There’s a letter that needs taking to Vili Hemmingson. Be sure you see it delivered.’

Ubba looked at Eivor from the side of his eye, lips pursed.

Varfeitr nodded. ‘You wish me to lead?’

‘It’s your decision. Finnr can do it if you’d rather come with us to the Exe.’

‘No - I’ll go north, make sure the letter reaches Hemsthorpe.’

Eivor rested a hand on his shoulder for a moment, and said ‘My thanks. Travel safely.’

‘You too, my jarl.’

Vagn had finally dragged himself from his bed. He emerged out of the hut just as the sun peeped over the hills and through the trees.

He said cheerfully, ‘You’re early and loud this morning.’

Eivor smiled. ‘Ravensthorpe is making you soft.’

Vagn chuckled, but didn’t deny it.

‘The Exe today you said?

‘Last raid of the season I think.’

He pondered the sky, as though the future days could be read there.

‘We might risk another yet - but we’ll see what the weather does.’

He went to oversee last minute preparations, and Eivor turned to Ubba.

‘You’ll be alright here, with Norna?’

‘Of course,’ he said, smiling, though feeling a little terse. He hated watching the raiders leave. That first day was always the worst. By tomorrow, he knew, he would have got over it.

Eivor studied his face a moment, then nodded, reassured.

‘Then I’ll see you in a few days.’

‘You will. Be safe.’

Eivor grinned. ‘Of course. Then he turned away - but he paused a moment to look back and say, ‘No jumping off the lookout this time.’

Ubba only grunted, but he couldn’t entirely repress the smile this roused. Eivor would never let him forget about the damn broken leg.

Tools of choice: My process of work is mixed, I like to sketch the first thumbs and sometimes more advanced pieces on paper and "ink" / color them using digital tools. It's been 5 years that more than 90% of my final pieces are done in digital, and along that period I discovered that I'm a person that likes to do a significant amount of tests while inking, and digital tools help me a lot in that.

Lately, I've been trying to achieve an inking process that I could do both on paper and on digital, that way I could do my pieces however I feel on that day, and my comic strip has been a good place for this test field, and I'm enjoying that mix very much.

If you were asking me "You are on a desert island and can bring just one setup with you," I'd say I would bring my iPad. It allows me to sketch with an "analogic feel," where it's important to feel that you are actually crafting something. But it also gives me all the testing possibilities the digital work has.

Tool I wish I could use better: Coloring in general, but mostly painting. It's always a struggle to translate what I have in mind to the final piece. And there are some aspects of texture and rendering that you can only get in analogical tools like gouache, oil, watercolor. Of course there are excellent artists that do those digitally, but there are certain aspects that you need a physical touch to achieve and I have never done anything like that. Maybe one day.

Tool I wish existed: A chair + desk set that automatically corrects your bad posture whenever your body is hurting or sitting in the wrong way. I hate having lower back and wrist pains while working, haha!

Tricks: One thing I brought from the full analogical days is an adaptation of the "drawing from your shoulder thing." Personally, I found it very hard to do, so I use a bandana on my pen hand, and use the other hand to pool this and drag. This is a thing that helps me a lot when drawing straight lines with a handmade feel, instead of just using shapes in Photoshop or any digital tool for precise lines.

Misc: "Go easy on yourself and have fun!" I never thought I could work with illustration. I spent almost a decade working in the aircraft industry (half of it doing freelance illustration jobs for local bands and brands) and the factory mentality lever left my mind, just now (after 10 years as an illustrator, 7 as my main activity), I'm recovering the passion that I had as a young doodling kid. Everyone sees artistic careers as this romantic thing, but it's always a struggle (at least for me) to face your passion as an obligation day to day, and make this trade of time and love for money. So after several years going hard on myself I am finally learning how to be lighter and having more fun and joy in my work.

I think the biggest influence I got from this industry was the routine and how to deal with work. Artists naturally tend to be less rigid in the aspect of routine because of the nature of creativity, and I think that having almost a decade working in another industry in a more conservative environment helped me in how to take it more serious in all aspects, from my day to day process, to how to treat my clients and deadlines.

That's basically the biggest influence and learning I got from this period. How to understand that the work isn't just the drawing and thinking, but everything that happens behind it, from the clothing choice I pick to work at home, from the time management I need to have in order to balance all simultaneous projects I have.

いつものそば定食を頂く。

洗濯する。

可燃ゴミ、30L*3。

ヤクルトさんから野菜ジュースを購入する。

ツレアイ（訪問看護師）は午前中に1件、8時30分に自転車で家を出る。

ツレアイ用のAppleWatchUltraを＜Paidy＞の3回払いで購入したのだが、リアルカードも発行するというので申し込んでみた。やはり一般的なクレジットカードよりも利用可能店舗が限られているので、使うことは（恐らく）ないだろうなぁ���

My Moleskin journal & a case of assorted marker pens (journal contains a folder pocket in it that has stickers, some post-its, and a mini ruler inside.)

Emergency Sharpie, ballpoint pen, and pencil

Typically I also take with in my bag my iPad, my MacBook Pro 2012, and my phone. If I'm trying to travel light I'll leave behind my laptop. If I'm traveling-traveling rather than just out and about places, I'll typically take my 2013 MacBook Air instead since it's much lighter.
