I just finished the invader Zim series. Uhhh.... I need a moment... To progress it... Because the 2 season cancelation is visible compared to gravity falls. Gravity falls had an ending. Invader Zim... . Didn't???? It doesn't have an ending he just... Goes home I guess. I suppose enter the florpus or the comic might give it an ending but it's still confusing.

Okay so yeah, I’m taking a break from this site but I just gotta say - saw Enter the Florpus, LOVED IT, and I gotta write about the scene that struck me more than any.

Dib said it himself earlier in the film - he’s constantly alone in what he does. Nobody believes or believes IN him and yet he’s always fighting so dang hard to protect everyone whether it’s alone or not. But the one person he wants behind him more than any is his dad. Poor little dude tried and tried and succeeded multiple times during the course of the show, but this whole mess was too much for one kid, capable as he may be.

BUT...

PAPA IS HERE.

Truly and honestly, for the first time.

That image of him rising from the smoke about to MESS UP AN ARMY and holding his tiny, tired, world-saving son is so striking to me. He may not understand his son or even believe that any of this is real, but for the time being, Dib needs him. And yeah, we know that by the end, he STILL doesn’t believe that aliens exist. Kinda weird but okay. BUT, at the same time, he clarified to Dib - albeit briefly - that it ultimately didn’t matter what kind of science he believed. His pride and love was nothing he had to earn.

WHAT A FANTASTIC DEVELOPMENT TO THEIR RELATIONSHIP FROM THE SHOW!! I’m a little surprised that of all the untied arcs, THIS is the one that they decided to advance but I’m weak for father and son fluff so pbfbfbfbfbfffttt--

Look at that face and the way he just falls into step behind Membrane. His dad’s practically a superhero - he’s got this.

AND BOY DOES HE.

It was so fulfilling to see them finally fighting together too MMMMPH--

Also yeah Membrane is possibly a cyborg???

And all it took to find that out almost 20 years later was the near-murder of his son and the takeover of his planet. Who knew!

I honestly don’t get the insistence on trying to deny that Zim’s an adult. That was something I never questioned as a kid. I mean, it was obvious. He had a job and lived on his own. His species is just naturally short so it’s easier for him to blend in and gather entry-level intel by pretending to be a grade school child than it would be to pass himself off as like, a grad student. I never needed to deny this to ship ZADR when I was a kid. I knew the tone of the show didn’t allow for romance or sentimentality. It was never going to happen anyway, so there was no point trying to bend myself into a pretzel to make canon comply with my OoC wish fulfillment. I just enjoyed fanart and fic where Dib was aged up or Zim was aged down to whatever was appropriate for the content of the story. Nobody who was ever into ZADR was into it for the adult/child dynamic because that wasn’t the dynamic they had. Their whole rivalry is a joke based on the fact that a grown adult with decades of military training finds his equal in a child, partly because he’s such an immature idiot and partly because said child is one of the only humans with two brain-cells to rub together. Aside from the enemies to lovers appeal, what people like about ZADR is that Zim takes Dib as seriously as Dib takes himself. Dib may only be 12 years old, but he makes adult decisions every day to take responsibility for protecting the Earth and put his life at risk. He has way more agency than a kid his age normally would due to a lack of adult supervision and is way more self-reliant due to a lack of dependable adults or authority figures in his world. Adult humans may treat Dib like the child he is (sometimes), but Zim’s always regarded him as an equal. He’s always respected Dib as a threat and never thought twice about trusting Dib with major responsibilities like helping him defeat Ultra Peepi or Tak. The show gets away with this because it’s completely devoid of seriousness, sincerity, or sentimentality. But ZADR fics generally aren’t comedic like the show and even when they are, they still have to be a bit OoC and off-brand tone wise because you simply can’t write romance without at least a smidgen of seriousness, sincerity, or sentimentality. But if you’re going to take the characters and their psychology seriously as the foundation for a romance, it becomes harder to ignore the age-gap if you’re willing to acknowledge that it’s even there. Most writers and artists I remember growing up just dealt with it by aging Dib up or Zim down as needed and that was that. I don’t see why it should be any different today. You’re already making non-canon OoC content. You don’t need to lie to yourselves about Zim being 16 in “Irken years” or a child by his species standards (despite being given adult responsibilities and autonomy) to get around what Jhonen has said on the subject. Just block the galaxy brains who want to call you pedos for writing two characters as equals when they’re already treated as equals in the source material and don’t waste a second of your time trying to justify yourselves to them.

POST TWO

Continuation of post one over the matter of when Professor Membrane got his arms and various other cybernetic implants. So to start off let’s see the first instance where he used his cybernetic arms in the tv series.

(Sorry it isn’t the best shot but it’s better than nothing)

The episode "The Most Horrible X-Mas Ever" is the only episode we see him using his implants. However, it’s only his hands that shoot the laser and it’s shown the rest of his arm is still flesh. This has lead me to believe that those sharks he attempted to befriend ate only his hands as a kid. Replacing them with robotic hands that would be his prototype for his new arms after the “Parent- Teacher Night” incident.

As you may know that there’s no exact dates for the show, which lead me to believe that Enter the Florpus happens during the end of summer (Seriously, how else would Zim and Dib be stuck in their houses for so long without any issue). Also since World Peace Day in the real world happens during September 21st so it fits I guess. Meaning Parent Teacher Night happens during the end of third quarter for Gaz, Dib and Zim’s Skool. Which would leave enough time for Professor Membrane to change design-wise and such. Also I like to think that incident acted as another reminder to him to realize the importance of staying alive for his kids’ and began spending more time with them as he recovered from everything.
