Character pairing: Five/Reader, Five Hargreeves/reader, Five Hargreeves & Reader, Five & reader
Tags: Mentions of death, slight fourth wall breaking, Reader has the power to change the narrative, the first part is boring, the second part is under construction, basically an introduction to what the reader can do! Honestly you don't have to read this but I needed to get started on something, wow that is one long tag, Red text is when reader changes the narrative/fourth wall breaks!

"The narrative"
There are plenty of things you regret in life. Whether it be telling someone about your feelings or the death of a family member you just wish you could turn back time to stop from happening - the regret is there, or maybe it isn't, but the clear wish to change the narrative is strong enough that you can't ignore it. Which is why you're a particularly lucky one. Being one of the children born from one of the 43 mothers around the world who either had their kids stolen or bought from them, died or killed. Some, you're sure, probably killed their own mother in the time of their birth. A stomach not welded for a child after all isn't a stomach that will survive.
Fortunately enough, your power wasn't anything that would physically change your appearance either. Actually, your power would've helped you change your appearance at any time, it was honestly convenient had you not gone insane decades ago because of it. The power to change the narrative, or in other words, control, was gifted to you simply because you were born on a specific day at a specific time. You were allowed to play god...kind of. You had to write out the original god for every universe and made sure to rewrite in the narrative that you are truly the one and only. Doesn't seem very hard to change the narrative does it? Well, until they started introducing scripts.
Which is what led you to here, on your pastel painted bicycle paddling around someone's version of heaven, waiting for Klaus to die and end up here so you both could talk. Being someone who had control over everything was extremely overwhelming, and of course sometimes you can't just use your power for everything, so, you have to do things the normal human way. Aka, posing as a god to one of Five's brothers so you could pass on a message. You and Five have met before a considerable amount of times, in the first script while he was in the apocalypse, you erased the part where The Handler came and got him, instead, you did.
Long story short, he kind of likes you, but you're a really big fan of those niche slow burns so you decided it would be best to change the narrative to fit that type. Blinking in and out of his life was easy enough, finding the right time to do so was harder than you thought it would be. First, you initiated first contact - aka appearing beside him while he was travelling through the apocalyptic world at the physical and mental age of 17, yet to time travel nor join the commission. Then, you slowly gave him doses of affection over the years, even going as far as to change your appearance to make him believe you were growing up with him. And after he trusted you enough, you pulled him into the commission. It was a cannon event, as they say, so you didn't want to interfere that much, because like it or not, you started falling for him too.
It's raining, the patter of water droplets hitting his clothing was enough to alert him of your presence. It always rained when you got here, that much was certain. It was only where you'd end up in that he had to figure out for himself. Once, it even rained for a week straight before he found you, in some abandoned old house with a TV that was still working. He was shivering by the time he got inside, and you laughed, telling him he looked like a wet dog before handing him a coat jacket. This time around though, you appeared right behind him, his senses alerting the nerves circulating his body that the love of his life was here. Well, the love of his life..as he knew it. It was common knowledge to him that you didn't like him like that, which is why it's only in his head that you two are happily married.
He swivelled to look at you in the face, the similar smile you held every time you appeared was something he didn't want to erase from his mind, never in a million years. "Marigold, you're back." He gulped, pulling at his collar and looking around nervously like a high school boy who was partnered with his crush for a dance. You nodded along, stepping forward and being wary of the rubble surrounding the two of you, this was your big time to shine, you couldn't afford to trip on a little rock now. Well, you could, to be fair, but rewriting the script again would make you lose more marbles than you already lost. "Five, I have to show you something." You, Marigold, well, that's not your actual name but you thought it would be really funny if he called you a nickname by the flower that doomed him and his family from the day they were born.
Eventually you got him to join the commission.
And now you're here, getting annoyed that the person you were supposed to meet is almost late. Well, everything is always on time but you pride yourself on being early, which is why you expected everyone else to be early too - could this guy really take any longer to get here? All he has to do is die for godsake. With the sudden sound of a flutter, grass being pushed aside by a body that just appeared, you stopped peddling your bike and waited for Klaus to gain his lucidity back and notice you there. "Klaus." You called out, hearing him groan before getting up to stare at you, he wasn't exactly standing but he wasn't sitting either, he was kind of on his side with his arm propping him up and a slurred look on his face.
"Oh hey god thing..person..ma'am," Klaus hummed, smiling cheekily. It wasn't the first time you two met and it definitely won't be the last. "I need you to tell Five that Marigold said he looks good in the outfit with the hat." You whispered, still however being on your bike, making it a little hard for you to say what you needed to say. "Your name is marigold?" , "Shush, druggie. Go back to the land of the living now." You tapped him on the shoulder with your shoe, hearing his protests disappear into thin air, and so did he.
"Brrrhhh," Klaus shook, feeling his body return to him, it felt like he just dreamt of a place called the void, but then again in the void it also felt like he was dreaming his entire life up. He coughed and stuttered, Diego's hand on his back bringing him closer to real life faster than usual. "God you really have to stop scaring us like that Klaus." Allison, to his other side, dipped down to discipline him like a child, which is in tune with her character, seeing as she is a mother. "Wait wait wait uhm, uh, where's Five?" Klaus snapped back in - or dare you say, locked in, before aggressively getting up and almost dragging Diego down to trip and fall flat on his ass while using him as a support.
"Five? Well-" Allison stepped backwards, a look of confusion on her face before she was cut off with Five blinking in front of Klaus, apple juice in a fancy glass on his right hand and the will of America - aka a gun - in his left. "Right here," he sipped his pretend margarita, staring Klaus up and down judgementally like a blonde middle aged soccer mom towards the college drop out cashier in a random Walmart. Klaus snapped his fingers, trying to remember whatever it was he had to say to Give that was so important. "Err, uhh, okay here it is, Marigold told me to tell you that she really liked your outfit with the hat," Klaus looked at Five's face for any kind of reaction, violent or not.

Today I shall be explaining how Edgar (Narrator), Mae (Curator) AND Inferos (TK) came to be.
Everyone buckled in? All ready? Alright! Here we GO—
The Creation Process / History.
Many millennia ago, The Universe was simply a mish mash of chemical compounds. Molecules weren't even established to be, they just simply.. Existed! It's unknown where the existence of everything had originated from. Now, there are many theories that hold up ideas of the origins of everything. Most Famously discussed being, of course, The Big Bang, estimated to have occurred 13.8 Billion years ago.
The Universe allegedly began as a tiny, high-density fireball, which spontaneously combusted and thus expanded as space. The Universe cooled in time, and with cooler conditions The First, simple elements began to form; Hydrogen, Helium and Lithium. Hydrogen being the main factor of the three. Gradually, gravity drew matter together which supposedly formed The First Stars & Galaxies. From here, Galaxies collected into into a mixture of Groups, Clusters & Superclusters, whereas some stars started to die within Supernova Explosions; their chemical remnants begun seeding new generations of stars, bringing their legacies to be long lasting but ALSO enabling the formation of New, rocky Planets. And one of those Planets, of course, just so happened to be Earth.
Now, somewhere, in-between all the kerfuffle, situated within the plentiful explosions and deaths of Stars and such alike , Larger Stars had begun to Collapse at the end of their Life Cycles. This brought into existence the first Black Hole. Now, A Black Hole, By Google Definition; A region of spacetime where gravity is so strong & nothing, including light & other electromagnetic waves, has enough energy to escape it.
The Theory of General Relativity predicts that a sufficiently compact mass can deform spacetime to form a black hole. At the time, obviously, these were a Rare Phenomena in the passing time of Space, and so contact with them involving an involuntary object had a slim chance of creating some Huge Reaction, seeing as Black Holes quite literally "Eat", in layman's terms, anything in its path. Nothing in existence, at that time, had ever had such a Strong Energy Scale to Escape, let alone Combat the likes of a Black hole. So nothing was capable of stopping them on their Daunting Path of Destruction. That is, until the introduction of an unfamiliar, foreign object in spacetime.

Lucidae Ignis in Aeternum, L.I.A.
[ ❝ Lucidae ❞,The term given the Brightest Star of a Constellation, Latin origins; the feminine singular of ❝ Lūcidus ❞, meaning ❝ Bright, Shining ❞ , ❝ Ignis in Aeternum. ❞, Latin origins; Meaning ❝ Fire Forever ❞, or rather ❝ Eternal Fire ❞ ]
This star-like-Giant of the Galaxian Empire was the largest existing ball of burning plasma known currently to Particular Knowledge of some, beating the Current Largest Known Star, UY Scuti, a Red Hypergiant standing at 1.188 Billion Kilometres, and somehow forming to be 156 Trillion Kilometres in size. That, in itself, is large enough to fit Five of our Solar System's within, and then some. It seems impossible, but at the same time. Existence as a whole is nothing far from what one would consider impossible. Yet here we are. Within Galaxies and Galaxies, Universes and Universes filled with who knows what.
Perhaps Stars even Bigger than LIA lie out there. Somewhere. LIA, as been theorised, has been said to of formed from Two Red Dying Hypergiants drawing close enough to one another at similar Low Levels of Combustion & existing at a Semi-Molten state to Weld Together, when Gravitational Forces between the two were strong enough to drawn one another in. This process of welding them to one another causes a sort of Infinitely Regenerative Source of Plasma Energy to power both stars and eventually merge them into one massive Hypergiant reaching lengths beyond general comprehension.

It just so happens that both LIA, and The Black Hole, which was later on dubbed Nexis, a relatively small black hole compared to ones that may exist today, co-exist in the same region of space, which would inevitably cause their paths to collide, one way or another. Time goes by, space goes on. And it's not long before Nexis's strengthening pull manages to catch LIA in its undefeated fury.
But, being such a large supply of energy, The Strength of Nexis must be pushed to its extremes to be able to reel in this Goliath for its own personal gain. And so, the two fought for their individual, eternal reign. Like warriors. Until both succumbed. They collapsed onto one another. And something new was born.

In some Stories, Folk Law & Myths carried across galaxies, it's been told through generations that these two Beasts of the Dark may have not been just... heartless monoliths, doing what they did simply because that's how things worked. Without any true, meaningful purpose other than just. To be.
As a matter of fact, It's strongly believed, by the few that tell the tales of the Universe, that these Giants had souls. Souls that had driving motives. Souls that felt for one another. And some found that tale to be as beautiful as it sounds.
And, if those tales were to be found true.. then it surely was. Tales etched into stone, written in old Greek, are the best source we currently have that depicts such a story. After thorough translation, this is what story was once told to be, and laughed at by the faces of many other highly religious figures;
❝ In the Times of Dark and Treacherous, the Lights of the Night were Dark & the Skies were Scary, Humanity was yet to be shaped out of the mud, and everything was Unorganized and Frail. Before our figures of Hierarchy came to be and ruled over our land, Two only dwelled in the Blank Canvas of The Dark. Brave Warriors. Who fought to keep Balance.
Elpída, Guardian of Distant Hope and Eternal Life, she fought for honour, to keep Light burning so the Dark would be luminous.
Maraíno, Executioner of Decay and Damnation, she fought for Power and took Life to Reign.
The Two Warriors Danced a Deadly Dance to Glorify their Ambitions in an Infinite Ballroom. It was a Fierce Battle. It was a Valiant Battle. And it kept Peace.
Their Battle could have been Eternal, everlasting, but at a point they both grew weak. Energy was forced to be used sparingly. Both that once wielded power and thrived off of it had turned that power into a channel for spite, a fuel for meaningless rage, and thus was no longer fruitful.
And once she had become frail, The Light of Elpída was dim. And the Hope she sought out to keep alive felt dismissed.
Maraíno cried out to their rival as they both came to a halt;
' The Light I once seeked from you to take has dimmed. And so it holds no value to me. So tell me, Darling Light, Why do I still seek you? '.
The Guardian answered with but another question;
' The Destruction you brought onto the existence of life has long since stopped as you have grown weaker. And you concentrate your time on my defeat. Yet, Why do I still fight you? '.
The Executioner had no answer to offer. And pondered upon this riddling response. And The Guardian spoke once more.
' Perhaps we fought for our ambitions once long ago, but I don't believe that to be the truth as we speak. ' she said, drawing closer to The Dark. Yet The Executioner did not try to defend itself. She allowed the touch of The Light to meet its faltering visage.
' Perhaps we fight now because we do not wish to be alone. I am the Light that illuminates you. Your soul encapsulates me. I have fought against it.. but now I fight to stay beside it. '. Once again, The Executioner could not reply. But it seemed as true to the two of them, whether they were to come to an agreement on the matter or not.
The battle had ended as suddenly as it had sprouted. The two held a gentle embrace around one another and uttered . And with the last of what they had, a spark in the Universe lit. And The True Empress that breathed life into our bodies had been born d from their dying light. It was born from two set souls, souls that had found their true purpose. To make life flourish. And to leave the Universe with company. With Life. With Hope. ❞

This tale has long since been forgotten, and remembering it at any point should be taken with a grain of salt. Believe it as simply a mystery of space, or as a story of great ambition. Either way, what remains true is that both entities collided. And with that collision birthed an unusual form of life, something that was capable of capturing, creating, controlling. It was a mighty force.
It's believed, but not confirmed, by some that the fusion of both Hypergiant's actually caused the LIA’s core to become a type of White Hole, or at the very least something similar, as it did not collapse onto itself but instead rebirthed as something entirely new, and phenomenal at that. But the interruption of Plasma from LIA’s outer surface prevented any sort of Wormhole from forming.
It, instead, forced remaining light nuclei to merge with one another simultaneously, forming dozens of heavier nuclei that released enough energy to be able to bond with early specimens of hard light collected together in a nearby nebula ; ultimately creating an infinite, solidified source of energy that had someone managed to become its own organism.
This Theory stands as The Theory of Everlasting Creation, and believes in the existence of an all-powerful, essentially living, thinking organism that holds the ability to create existing, and even non-existing, elements, substances, materials, mixtures and compounds at will, with no finite limitations on how much it may create or be capable of creating, as well as also being able to deconstruct and destroy the prior at the same time.

With all of this established, we may now bring our focus on this ‘hypothetical’ organism, or some may even refer to it as a Deity of sorts.
In Theory, this natural phenomena has created a God. It cannot die. And it can exist for eternity. With its purpose being to keep balance, and create. If it so chose to take that path.Thus, making it the perfect candidate for a Godly Figure. And in the future, it might just have been considered one by a select few. Early Astronomers who sought out the mysteries of space, perhaps. Who’s to say?
This being would be referred to as “The Creator” when humanity caught onto its presence, which was certainly fitting, considering the circumstances. However, long before humanity even had a name, the being itself had already come to find an alias of its own. It called itself “Mae”. Which would later be established as a word that correlates to “God/Goddess”, or “Beautiful”, in Gaelic/Celtic meanings. Or “Mother” in Portuguese; also oddly fitting. For more reasons than one. Which brings us to our next point:
What she created.

Now, obviously, there came a point in time where living organisms had begun their own evolutionary pipeline. This was not brought upon the universe by the likes of she. As a matter of fact, this evolutionary advancement is something that fascinated her. Despite being an overpowering organism of creation, these life forms had formed themselves all on their own. She had no involvement with it whatsoever. And that alone caught her attention. In no time, she’d become fixated on this Planet and its independent growth. Even during the early stages of life, she kept a watchful eye on every little detail.
Single-celled organisms were fruitful and multiplied into multicellular life. From here, these organisms branched off into a vast variety of Chordata, which were primarily based in bodies of water and adapted to such in terms of diet and anatomical structure. Her attachment to these organisms grew further as she saw their development now leading into much more complex territory; Tetrapoda now becoming part of the equation as four-limbed vertebrate, which had not only become amniotes as they started to roam the land, but had also began to become more adapted to both aquatic and land based worlds in order to branch of FURTHER than what was initial expected.
The introduction to land brought upon more evolutionary expansion. The planet was now given Mammalia and Primates. They were full-on land dwellers at this point, roaming the Earth freely and seeking out new places to thrive and evolve further than they already had. And from there, amidst the rest of the world’s wonders, we were given the beginning of the Human Race… and they turned out to be a species the god had become quiet.. QUITE.. infatuated with..
She admired them.. From the way they came to be to the fact that they, too, were capable of creating things if they really set their minds to it..
They were interesting little things. She felt linked to them in ways that were difficult to describe.
And through keen observation, taking note of their strengths and their flaws, and discovering what exactly brought them such differentiating characteristics and experiences, she had an idea beginning to spark.
She wanted to create something like them.
She wanted to create an ideal model.. The PERFECT humane specimen..
Something that was so similar to their kind yet so completely different at the same time. Something that had their traits but something she could teach to achieve things like she could.

So, with that brewing idea in mind, she began to experiment.
Surprisingly, despite Mae being perceived as something to be high and mighty and capable of pretty much anything, there were a lot of failed attempts & mistakes in the process. Obscure looking body shapes, a multitude of mish-mashed limbs, misplaced facial features that made her creations look uncanny.
But the main problem was that despite the effort she put into each individual attempt – none of them were capable of living freely. Which was the beautiful thing about humanity; they had their own desires, thoughts, ambitions and feelings. They did what they wished to do of their own accord. Nothing held them back.
And it had nothing to do with having a functioning mind. Or a beating heart. If anything, things like that were a primary human set-back. She knew this.
But the question was what exactly CRAFTED them into their own, distinct person if it wasn’t the thoughts of the mind or the life pumped into their hearts.
Eventually, though, she discovered that indescribable something simply by digging deeper. Thinking outside of the box, so to speak.
Each life on Earth appeared to have their own respective source of internal light. It was an incomprehensible thing to most, undiscovered by man and embedded deep within the heart & mind. But somehow, Mae was able to wrap her head around its existence.
A soul.
A magical thing. Founded upon clusters of stardust cumulated together in the central core of billions upon trillions spread out across universes.
Every soul was unique to its bodily host. Not a single soul was the same. Each feeling and experiencing things differently to one another.
A soul was something ever changing, that may link with another soul if bonds were grown enough to pull them together. Once a soul had linked with another, it was almost impossible to separate them. Only if the negative forces of attraction between souls grew too fierce would a soul be forced to separate.
Mae had discovered this phenomenon to be Soulmating. And it came in a multitude of different forms. Alongside hundreds and hundreds of differentiating characteristics that made up what a soul was.
These souls were intricate. And beautiful. And it was something Mae came to find precious.
And thus, she set herself the task to try and replicate such a thing. Create that unique essence of life, thriving off of its own undying light.
And eventually, with perseverance, self-encouragement and a hefty amount of elbow grease (despite very much not having elbows),
She did it. She crafted a soul. A perfect soul. A soul full of brilliance and undiscovered mystery. And a body, to keep that soul alive, to give it a face and name. To let it grow as a person. A person. Her own, darling creation. Which she looked upon with pride. And held her hopes high for to achieve the perfection she had perceived. And so, she gave it a name. Amor Aeternus. Which was a mishmash or words curated by the Romans of Earth. Two words, in Latin; Meaning
“Eternal Love”.
That was what it was called. Eternal Love. She had no reasoning as to why she named it this way. But she felt compelled to do so nonetheless.
But oh,
How fitting that name would be… ♡
However that name would one day develop into the man we know now as Edgar Vincent Marlowe... not just a Narrator, but a storyteller...~

Now, Highlighting THIS aspect;
Amongst all those failed attempts there was merely one out of thousands that was seemingly quite different. To say the least...
One that, miraculously, had a grown consciousness. The ability to live despite, by technicality, being categorized as the unliving. A small soul that formed on its own accord that would never of been noticed because of how fragile and simple it was. Attached to this unflattering malgamation of a body that was just BARELY keeping onto a humanoid figure.
...and yet, despite its perseverance to live; it never was noticed.
In fact, it was completely disregarded... and forgotton.
But this soul saw everything it could of had. And this soul never forgot. Never forgot how its chance at life was taken from hands of boiling flesh and instead given to another. Something more appealing. More successful. More putridly perfect.
And in itself it grew to hate. It grew to be full of jealousy. To be scornful, and full to the brim with resentment towards the being that he could of been. With a want to tear down everything that this Prince of The Stars had acquired and someday take his place. Show the universe that he WAS worthy of that status. He was special & capable enough to experience what this Brother of sorts of his had already experienced.
And so, he gave himself a name. To express his scorching, eternal flame of envious greed in bold. To overdramatize himself and show his self-proclaimed "upper status".
Stella Natum Inferos. (or "Inferos" for short.)
Meaning Star-born Hell Beast.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is our Keeper of Time. The one who keeps the Wheel Turning and the one who could stop that Wheel at any given moment.
This is the Story of two Brothers, not bonded by blood but the eagerness & naivety of a joint Creator. One, Blissfully unaware and Blessed; Attune to the gift of Giving and a Heart of Gold, a Soul pure and true. The other, Scornfull & Painfully Aware; hateful and seething deep down only wishing for approval, and to be adored.
"The stars made you their own; you are adored and shine bright. I was cast out, sentenced to to be forgotten; denied acknowledgement and stripped of my life. You will always try to find a way to love. I dance with the tangled webs of resentment. You do not know me. I wish I did not live aside you."
And perhaps... this burning hatred held by one shall finally cut through the thin veil that keeps the two apart.
Their story is still being told, after all.....and a Story needs an Ending~
...and ending that may come sooner than possibly anticipated. You'll just have to wait and see.. ♡

i let out an exaggerated sigh as i make my way to english literature, introduction to romantic poetry was the lesson of the week. at least the professor is bangin' hot. thick thighs, amazing curves and what looks like a d-cup set nicely on her chest.
professor y/l/n.
she was a recent graduate of the University of Georgia, the current school i was attending. a full ride football scholarship, i was the best wide receiver in the nation, uni's form all states where trying to pull me. i made the decision to attend UGA on logistics, the best football team in all the states, currently undefeated.
"you ready to see our professor?" niall snaps me out of my thoughts wiggling his eyebrows.
"bloody hell, yes. i don't think i could thank my advisor more for forcing me to do this class." i snicker and he chuckles shaking his head.
"tell me 'bout it." he comments licking his lips and i scrunch my face in disgust.
"watch yourself horan." i mumble as i see a group of girls waving at me and sending winks my way, i send them a wave before averting my eyes.
niall throws a punch at my arm before starting a light jog and i huff out a laugh before following him. sooner than later we find ourselves in professor y/l/n's lecture hall.
"romantic poetry is the poetry of the Romantic era, an artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement that originated in Europe towards the end of the 18th century." professor y/l/n's states as she walks around her desk, a gray pencil skirt hugs her curvy hips, her freshly shaven legs on display, and a black turtleneck that sticks to her skin like glue. "i've decided to take a different route then the normal, 'Sonnet 18 by the beloved William Shakespeare', and instead we will start this unit with something from my background, 'El Beso' by Angelina Weld Grimké. which translates to 'the kiss', Grimké wrote the poem about a love song, full of passion, yearning, and confused emotions."
i lick my lips and pull my bottom lip between my teeth, she sits back on the desk and her hips plush out even more.

Bulleid's Proposed Locomotives
So it turns out Bulleid had so many of his designs dropped for one reason or another, and since I can't stick with a single project for more than a few seconds, I wrote up histories for all of them!
Enjoy the ramblings of a madman who spent a good long while finding free number slots for them.
Southern Railway Warship Class
The Southern Railway was the most financially successful of the "Big Four", but this was largely based on investment in suburban and main line electrification. After the successful introduction of the SR Schools class in 1930, the railway had lagged behind the others in terms of modernizing its aging fleet of steam locomotives, as they were more focused on Electrification. Following the retirement of the general manager of the Southern Railway Sir Herbert Walker and Richard Maunsell the Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) in 1937, their successors considered that the time had come to change this situation. In March 1938 the new general manager Gilbert Szlumper authorized Oliver Bulleid, Maunsell's replacement, to prepare designs for twenty express passenger locomotives. The deteriorating international situation prior to the Second World War was an additional factor in this decision.
Originally, Bulleid had wanted a 4-8-2 Mountain Type, but the Civil Engineering department had resisted this based on size and weight, so a 2-8-2 was chosen instead. Bulleid had worked with Gresley on his P2 2-8-2 express engines, so he already had some background knowledge, especially with the P2’s problems and ideas on how to solve them. Of course, due to the war, they were classified as heavy mixed-traffic engines to get around wartime regulations.
They were built with high-pressure 280 PSI boilers and three 18inx26in cylinders, as well as being the first engines to use Bulleid’s chain-driven valve gear, though the middle cylinder had to be inclined steeply to clear the first driven axle. The boiler was partly welded to save on cost, and the inner firebox was made of steel. The Southern had no facilities to build these boilers, so it was subcontracted to the North British Locomotive Co., as well as Beyer Peacock. They were also fitted with Bulleid’s Air-Smooth Casing. Unlike later designs that utilized this, the casing on the Warships both served their function purpose as labor saving as well as being able to be passed off as some sort of streamlining. How Bulleid got that one through during the war is a mystery! The Warship’s were also the first to use Bulleid’s Firth-Brown Wheels.
10 of these engines were constructed in 1940. More were set to be produced, but once again, the Civil Engineering Department expressed their discomfort at such a large engine running at high speeds with only a single pony-truck in front, despite other engines of a similar design getting on fine elsewhere. This would lead Bulleid to designing and building 30 of his well-known Merchant Navy Class 4-6-2s.
They were named after Warships as a way to increase morale, with 11D1 being officially named “Dreadnought” in April 1940. They performed well in service, hauling heavy passenger and express goods, though the Chain-Driven valve gear was sensitive and required high maintenance, as well as the oil-bath having leaking problems, contributing to wheel-slips(Though the extra wheel helped negate this as well). The casing, while it did save on labor during cleaning, and the more streamlined appearance helped with publicity, it made maintenance hard to carry out. Surprisingly, thanks to their different front ends, they never really experienced drifting smoke like Bulleid’s Pacifics.
All 10 of the engines would be passed into British Railways, numbered 37001-37010, where their duties mostly stayed the same. 11D8 “Black Charles'' took part in the 1948 locomotive exchange trials, where it was compared to LMS Duchess pacifics and LNER A4’s and A2/2s, where it performed favorably, though the chain driven valve gear and its oil bath still caused headaches. After the Crewkerne incident, BR chose a rebuilding program of any engines that still used Bulleid’s Chain Driven motion, however, as the Warships had required far less modifications that the Pacifics, they were on the bottom of the list in the rebuilding program. In the end, only 37003 “Triumph”, 37009 “Warspite”, and 37010 “Exeter” were rebuilt in 1956, 1957, and 1959.
Despite their status as a class with very few engines, all ten would survive until the end of southern steam, going between 1965-1966.
Two are preserved, both being rescued from Barry Scrapyard in Wales. These examples are Class Pioneer 11D1 “Dreadnought”, as well as 11D3 “Triumph”.

Southern Railway Prototype Light Pacific

In 1941, Bulleid had introduced his Warship Mikado's and Merchant Navy Pacific's to become the main motive power for the Southern Railway’s Express passenger trains, though while they performed well, they were restricted by their weight, especially since the condition of the rails were hampered by the Second World War. Initially, trains on the lighter sections were handled by the Q1 0-6-0 freight engines and other, older engines, but they couldn’t handle the faster trains that were anticipated after the war. There was also the planned electrification of certain areas after the war, so the new design also needed to handle freight traffic as well, fast enough to not impede electric services.
What was decided on in the end was a downsized version of the Merchant Navy’s, fitted with the same design theory of the Q1’s to create a “Light Pacific”. The Locomotive was completed in 1942 alongside the Q1’s, and was trialed for a short time before entering service. It was deemed a success, and numbered 21C201. It was powerful enough to handle fast, heavy trains, as well as having an extremely light axle loading for a pacific at 16.5 Tons, enabling it to be used on almost every part of the UK Network as a whole. However, Bulleid decided to go with a different approach, creating simply a downsized Merchant Navy with no Q1 elements. This would increase the axle load, though this wasn’t much of an issue, as the Battle of Britain and West Country Class Light Pacifics still had a high enough route availability for the work they were assigned. Thus, the “Q1 Light Pacific'' would remain a one-off.
During the war, No.21C201 would actually travel a fair amount, and would regularly venture out of Southern territory, its light axle-load coming in handy. After the war however, it would mostly stay in the South. Performance-wise, it seemed to inherit all of the good qualities from the Q1’s and the pacific’s. The light-weight was already a plus, coupled with a great, free-steaming boiler and additions that made the driver and fireman’s life easier. However, it also inherited the bad aspects as well. The chain-driven valve gear was a well-known headache on bulleid locomotives, but there was also the issue that its light-weight caused. The regular Light Pacifics had trouble starting heavy trains thanks to their weight, but No.21C201 had it worse, especially with the well-known issues with the oil bath the valve gear was situated in. The light weight would also affect braking power as well, making unfitted trains harder to stop, a trait inherited from the Q1’s.
No.21C201 (Now Renumbered 34000) was not considered for rebuilding like the other Bulleid Pacifics due to its one-off status. It would be given a general repair in 1960 before spending the rest of its life at Nine-Elms, mainly working express and semi-fast goods trains and the occasional passenger turn during peak period and summer excursions. It was withdrawn from service in 1966 and broken up at Eastleigh.

Southern Railway L1 Class
Bulleid designed these locomotives during the Second World War, but construction didn’t begin until 1946. They shared many components with Bulleid’s Q1 0-6-0 goods engines, and were essentially the Q1’s with an Air-Smoothed Casing and a bigger boiler (though the firebox was identical with that of a Q1’s).
Twelve of these engines would be constructed between 1946 and 1948, with the final 3 being built by British Railways. They were originally numbered 22C1 to 22C12, though they were renumbered in 1949 to 36101 to 36112. They were originally meant for short distance goods and passenger services, though they never really found their footing in this role. The passenger trains that usually necessitated big tank engines were already being handled by electric engines, and everything else usually required smaller and lighter engines, which meant that, despite inheriting the power and efficiency of the Q1, the added weight and size meant that they were barred from where they could be most effective. The goods work they were meant for were also in the care of both Q1’s and Maunsell’s Q Class, as well as the many N class moguls already in service. In the end they spent their time hopping from shed-to-shed before settling on ex-LSWR territory, and even venturing into Western Region territory.
They were withdrawn between 1962-1964. Only one survives, 22C9 (36109) on the Bluebell Railway.

Southern Railway Dock Class
After the Second World War, many of the Southern Railway’s shunters (mainly those at Southampton) inherited from pre-grouping companies were worn out and needed overhauling. As such, Bulleid opted to replace them outright with his own design of 0-6-0T, with a short wheelbase of 10 feet to enable it to negotiate the tight curves. Like many of Bulleid’s designs, he equipped it with a relatively high boiler pressure.
Six would enter service in 1946, and while a total of 18 were planned, this would never come to be, as Eastleigh works was not in a position to build new locomotives with the backlog from the war. In the end, the southern found it cheaper to purchase ex-USATC S100 dock shunters, as they fulfilled most of the requirements needed.
They were numbered C201 to C206, and were renumbered to 30071 to 30076 in British Railways days. The first, 30071, was built with the Idaglass boiler lagging and casing as used in the Q1 class, while the other 5 were built with conventional boiler lagging and tanks. 30071 would be rebuilt like the others in 1953.
The class would lead uninteresting lives as dock shunters in Southampton and Dover until their withdrawal between 1961-1962. One was initially purchased for preservation but the deal fell through. None are preserved.

What decision tree led to the amount of bread you've eaten in the past 72 hours?
In 2009, I decided to take a metals and manufacturing course in high school. I had an undiagnosed learning disability at the time, and tech ed courses helped me to pad my otherwise-suffering grades. In that class, I met someone who would go on to become one of my closest friends to this day.
Many years later, that same friend introduced me to a new friend whom they had met through work. We hit it off well enough, and they likewise became a good friend in short order.
December 31st, 2019, I decided to go out to a bar with this friend-of-a-friend (my friend) and a friend of theirs unrelated to all of this, except that while at the bar, that friend-of-a-friend-in-law booted up Pokemon Go.
Now, I'd tried Pokemon Go when it came out, but it was kind of lacking. And I really didn't have the motivation.
But then COVID.
So I got WAY into Pokemon Go. Which got me into hiking, and photography.
Nearly two years later, on Halloween, 2021, I was hiking at Maryland Heights, on the cliffs above Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. I still have photos of that day. I'm actually a descendant of John Brown's brother, Jacob. But I was hiking that day, and as I rested on a rock midway up the trail, I realized I wanted to go to college to study the environmental humanities.
By autumn of 2022, I was enrolled as a freshman in my undergraduate studies and I took a course titled Introduction to Sustainability: a 100-level option for our required introductory course in the program. As a part of this course, we had to undertake a project in sustainable living. Specifically, we had to make a change in our lifestyle for eight weeks and write on it, as well as working out the environmental impact of said change. Now, I was working as a delivery driver and I live in the Midwestern U.S., so driving less would be... difficult. I opted to stop eating meat! Specifically, I adopted a pescatarian diet: vegetarian plus fish, because I love shrimp and crab and lobster.
And it turned out to be super easy! I've basically stuck with it ever since, albeit with some cheat days. It's more ethical than dietary, so I'm open to meat when it's (as) ethically-sourced (as it can be with knowledge that something lived and died for the meal). But that's deff shaped my food preferences, and when I recently moved across town to be within walking distance of work and campus, proximity to local bagel shops did factor into my decision.
So I suppose if I had to narrow it down, it was choosing welding over woodworking in 2009 that led me to eat two bagels and three grilled cheese sandwiches in the past 72 hours. It would've been three bagels, but the most convenient place is closed on Mondays.

More Orphan Dreck
I found some more sci-fi... stuff... hanging out on my hard drive and while I don't have a single idea of what I was going to do with it, it did seem like something that kinda-sorta might belong on this very, very young blog. I love worldbuilding and creating new people, so perhaps treat this like an introduction to how my brain processes that. I don't think it needs a content warning, but there is a bit of suggestive language.

Cass leaped to the side, dodging a huge leg wrapped in a greenish fabric – part of an enormous jumpsuit studded with pockets and loops, jingling with tools and bits of metal. Looking up, she met with the wide, ivory-toothed grin of an enormous Dreen almost nine feet tall and the color of dark moss. “Whoa, sorry about that! You okay there?” the Dreen asked, reaching down to offer help. Cass offered her hand in return, tapping him on the knuckles with her fist. “I'm good, thanks!”
“Haven't seen you here before,” the Dreen crouched, putting himself on Cass's level. He was certainly the largest Dreen she'd ever seen, most being closer to eight feet than nine, but his height barely compared to his thickness – his massive arms and chest were swollen with muscle from years of hard work and his hands were scarred from welding burns and dozens of unknown cuts. “You new?”
“She is,” Captain Landa introduced Cass to the Dreen. “Cass, this is Duna, he's our general systems mechanic and main muscle. Duna, this is Cassiopeia, our new assistant pulse engines specialist.”
“Oh, nice! You're gonna be working with Ouran, then?”
“If she can find him,” Landa nodded. “Of course, you'll be expected to help out wherever you're needed.”
“I can do that,” Cass agreed, “a little variety never hurt anyone.”
“That's very true,” Duna looked her over, his great yellow eyes appraising. “A little variety is very nice.” The corner of his mouth turned up, the large double-fangs his people called dirks peeking out between his green lips. He leaned a little closer, speaking to Cass's ear. “If you like variety, you're gonna love this ship. Whatever your, ah, taste.” To make his point, the Dreen ran out a green tongue so long it touched below his chin.
Cass's cheeks heated and she chuckled, “I'll keep that in mind.” Absolutely!
“Duna,” Captain Landa warned, “chill. Give the girl at least a day before you try to get your claws on her.” She clapped a hand on Cass's shoulder. “Come on, you've still got the rest of the crew to meet. Duna, behave yourself.”
“It's more fun when I don't.” Duna gave Cass a wink. “See you at mess!”
Passing through the machining shop, Captain Landa took Cass by the welding bay. Among the sparks and stink of ozone and hot metal, several workers waved and a few put down their tools to come and greet them. As the hoods came off, Cass was somewhat not surprised to see that many of the sweaty, scarred, scorched humanoids were Drass. While Drass were still new to the Federation Alliance, the people from the recently-dismantled Drassian Empire were generally agreeable, they worked hard and they liked to drink. Cass accepted many handshakes and fist-taps from the semi-reptilian folk, men and women, and more than one appreciative glance. She spotted a pair, two brawny fellows wearing thick fire-retardant aprons hanging out by the smelting pots, gesturing towards her and nodding. Like all Drass, their forearms and shoulders were plated with thick scales and these were pock-marked with burn scars. She waved, and the two waved back with enthusiasm, sharing a look.
Continuing through the ship's many bays, workshops, storage rooms and communal areas, Cass saw many types of folk – aside from the Dreen and the Drass, she saw Juun, Ruku, Mynx, Nuani, Arakan, several kinds of humans, and more, all various sizes, colors, types and even a few hybrids. All seemed friendly, all greeted their captain with respect. “You've got quite the mixed bag here,” Cass commented.
“I take pride in having a colorful ship,” Captain Landa said, “and I make sure everyone feels welcome. Those who don't usually hop off at the next port stop, but over the years we get more and more keepers. Should be pretty easy to find some friends among your new crew-mates – but if anyone gives you any problems you bring it to me.”
“Don't you have an HR department?”
“I am the HR department.”
“Ah, I see. So, where are we headed?”
“Pulse engine bay, where you'll be working most of the time.” Landa led Cass into a lift. “Usually Ouran keeps things running without any help, but even a Leagan needs an extra hand once in a while.”
“Wait a minute,” Cass turned to Landa, “you have a Leagan?”
“Sure do,” Landa nodded, “best goddamn pulse engine spec in the sector, far as I'm concerned. You never seen one?”
“Not up close.”
“Well, don't get your hopes up,” Landa punched a code and the lift descended. “Leagans are a shy bunch, but Ouran is the shyest of them all. He had an accident a few years ago and he's pretty self-conscious about his looks. I think you'll be lucky if you see him once every six months or so, and even then it'll probably just be his shadow.”
“How am I supposed to work with someone I can't see?”
“You'll get your work orders, like anyone else. Keep your log up to date and you won't have any issues. Oh! Here,” Landa rummaged in a pocket and brought out a black rectangle. “Ixi has a good hand with small electronics, she worked this up for me a while back.”
“A smartphone?” Cass took it, disbelieving. “This thing belongs in a museum!”
“Ouran doesn't talk, so you'll need one of these to keep in touch with him.”
“He can't talk?”
“Well, he can, but he chooses not to. If you ever do see him, you'll understand why. He prefers to text – Ixi fixed it so it connects to the ship's wireless, and she did something that makes it hop frequencies so no matter where you are, if you're in reach of a signal you can get to him. My link's in there too, if you need me.”
Cass powered the device on, shaking her head as the phone – A smartphone? Really? - screen glowed. A message, a picture of Ixi grinning at the camera, welcomed Cass to the phone's operating system as it booted up. Cass grinned. What a weird bunch.
“And here's the pulse bay,” Landa tapped the lift gate and it slid open. Cass stepped out into a dank, industrial tangle of ladders, chains, pipes, tanks, massive control panels and snarls of wire and tubing. Oh damn, feels like home already. She turned as Landa balled up her fist and banged on a nearby steel plate. The sound reverberated like a gong through the space, chains rattling and liquid dripping in response. “Ouran!” Landa called, “I brought our new recruit down to see the works!” Landa stopped banging, laughing as she turned back to Cass. “If you want to get his attention, just bang on something. He'll hear you. Ain't that right?” Landa looked up and Cass tried to follow, but she saw nothing. “You won't see him, but he's probably looking at you right now. Hey, Ouran? Cass has one of Ixi's phones, nine-seven-seven-six-Alpha-Charlie-Zulu!”
In her pocket, Cass's phone buzzed. Zzt-zzt! “That was fast,” Landa commented. Cass pulled it out, met by a notification that she had a message. Cass read the screen: Hey.
“She got it!” Landa called, and from overhead Cass heard a distinctive pattern tapped on the pipes: tap-tap...tap. “That's him,” Landa said, “two taps and a pause is 'yes', if he does it backwards it's 'no'.”
“Got it. So he really doesn't talk?”
“Not a word since his accident. Which is a shame, he's a really nice guy. Anyway, if you don't mind the quiet ones you two will get along fine.”

I think I'm just realizing I've been so deeply shellshocked by Endgame... It has literally taken me 4 years to finally, finally start mourning it
I just... Please if there's anyone out there willing to talk to me because how can I tell anyone in my close circle I'm mourning a MOVIE

I guess it really is the stages of grief and I've lived in denial for 4 years because I simply just couldn't bring myself to believe a franchise that I have absolutely adored and poured all my love and trust... Kicked me back like that... And after giving me a movie that was everything I could've asked like... I just don't know how to say it and I'm sorry I'm using tumblr as a personal journal but I simply have to put it down for words.
Endgame for me was everything.

What do you want to make? This year I am interested in enhancing my leadlighting and potentially stained painting skills, further deep diving into sandblasting, further developing kiln-forming skills and some glassblowing in Ruth Allen's trainee program. I would also like to incorporate some metalworking into my work - welding, plasma cutting, etc.
What techniques are on your wishlist? I would love to learn lost wax casting, coldworking techniques, stack firing/thick fusing and using molds.
What areas do you want to skill up? I would like to gain more confidence in consolidating my knowledge about annealing, firing schedules, and improving my ability to match conceptual frameworks with physical output.
Overall goal for the year? I have my first solo show at the end of the year, and I'd like to make a number of pieces that contribute to that body of work as well as stand on their own coneptually/aesthetically.
