#introduction to sapientia cosplay

Last but not least: here is my Hiccup Haddock cosplay, with my friend as Astrid Hofferson! Just want to say that Hiccup (as a character) is very dear to me and this cosplay is not even near to being finished. So yeah, be kind with your critisim or just look at my amazing and dear Astrid, ‘cause she is awesome and pretty! Since my tumblr is mostly reblogs of How To Train Your Dragon content (I think?), I think you all know who Hiccup Haddock is, but I still want to post a gif of my dorky boy, just because I can, hahaha: 

So yeah, this is my unfinished Hiccup cosplay. I don’t know exactly why I keep procrastinating the progress, because I love making my cosplays so much. However, I think this cosplay has to be *chef’s kiss* ”a mastahpiece” for myself because I love Hiccup so much haha. And when I start working on the cosplay I keep thinking: “Oh and then I can do his braces, And then his pants. Oh but I have to do his peg leg sometime around. And his boot for his right leg. Oh my gods, I have to do so much for this cosplay, I feel so overwhelmed, let’s take a break.” And then I take a break for a week, or in the last case, two months. Here is a WIP-pic of the upper jacket from last summer (let me tell you: this was a Very Big Puzzle): 

HOWEVER: the times (that would be two, haha) I have worn my “casual” Hiccup, as I keep calling my unfinished versions, I have had so much fun! The first time we were listening to the HTTYD2 soundtrack on the way to the convention and the second time I was so happy to see my one of my best friends again. Also: crossplaying is still so much fun and Hiccup is, I have to say, something special. I have a favourite pose as him, though. The “oh my gods, this is my girlfriend, she is so beautiful, I can’t even” look. (Disclaimer for the next picture: I ordered THREE wigs from Arda Wigs, but they were ALL the wrong colour. So I went with the one that was the closest to the colour I wanted.) 

I never knew that the Hiccstrid fandom was so big, because this picture was the first post of my Instragram to get over 100 likes, hahaha.  So yeah, I am actually pining to finish this cosplay, but I have to work on Elsa right now and after that I probably need to get busy with my secret cosplay and Pyra and Malos from the Xenoblade Chronicles 2, so Hiccup will be postponed for another couple of months, unfortunately. *sad face* Maybe I will smooch in some days working on this cosplay though (I hope). 

Will I be cosplaying more versions of Hiccup? Oh dear gods yes. We (my friend who cosplays Astrid and I) had actually planned to cosplay Hiccstrid from HTTYD2 at first. But then the trailer and all the promotion material were released for The Hidden World and we switched to the casual outfits from HTTYD3. We still both want to make the outfits from HTTYD2 and it would a personal goal if I ever would make a full armour suit and if it would be Hiccup from HTTYD3 it would be double goals! For Astrid I only have three cosplays I really want to make: bride (still convincing my boyfriend to be my Hiccup), the concept art I was fawning about in this post and momstrid (when I have actual kids of my own). But for now: we’ll make do with these unsatisfying and unfinished versions of Hiccup I have. (Inaccurate Hiccup cosplay is judging me.)

We continue the cosplay introduction for cosplay number three: Bolin from Avatar: The Legend of Korra! My two friends wanted to cosplay Korra and Asami and to join their New Team Avatar, I decided I would crossplay (for the very first time)! For anyone who doesn’t know this beloved earthbender: 

I was only a bit nervous to crossplay, but I had so much fun. Now, to be honest, I think I prefer crossplaying to cosplaying a female character. But that may be because my current male cosplays are big dorks and happy goofballs. The first time I cosplayed as Bolin was, and I kid you not, the best day ever: 

This picture was taken at the end of that day and it is still one of my favourite cosplay pictures to date. As you see I have got a new wig since that first time, but I feel everybody’s cosplays improve with time. Your first make-up test is never the same as your next, sometimes you find out during a day that something of your cosplay is wrongly constructed and you make it again but better. And I find out my wig was not the wig I could use for this cosplay, so I bought a new one!  I am super proud of this cospay, because it’s so accurate and so comfy! I love being Bolin ^^

May I introduce my own version of Rowena Ravenclaw to you? I don’t really have an order to introduce my cosplays to you, but this is my second self-made cosplay. This is part of a group cosplay with three of my friends; we were the young female versions of the Founders of Hogwarts. Here is a picture of the four of us: 

This cosplay had various stages for me, because I started this in July 2017, finished the garments in august 2017 and actually wore the cosplay in April 2018 to Elfia Haarzuilens. This was because I went to study abroad from September 2017 until January 2018 and I wouldn’t be able to make cosplays then. I had a shoot in August 2017 with my friends and wore her, so I already had beautiful pictures (but without the tiara and a wand): 

The planning was that I would not wear a wig and have my own hair, as shown above, but then I decided I wanted to dye my hair blond. So I had to buy a wig. (Fun fact: that wig is my actual hair colour.)  Elfia Haarzuilens (when we wore the Founders) was amazing and not everyone immediately recognized us, but we got some pretty great reactions. Afterwards, I received some amazing pictures. 

And after that, I got the opportunity to shoot with her at the ruins of the Abbey of Villers (the first and the last pictures are taken there)! I have never worn her since that, but she is still very special to me, because the cape was my first big sewing project after I only made one simple dress and I made the gown completely by myself, almost without asking my mother for help. And I am very proud of all the beautiful pictures that were taken in this cosplay!

My very first cosplay: Anastasia in the yellow dress from the Once Upon A December Sequence! (It’s also my cover!) I have to be honest with you all: this is my third version of this dress and I still want to make another version of it because I know I can do better. The original dress: 

In April 2017, I decided to go to my very first event as a cosplayer and I wanted to bring this cosplay so badly and was so convinced that I could make this dress myself. My mother knew that this wasn’t possible, so she helped me! This was the result: 

I didn’t know how to pose, I barely knew how make-up worked and my wig was shifted. And I have to be honest: I remade everything, because I wasn’t happy with the result. Though I am still very proud of this and very thankful that my mother made this dress for me! 

The second time I did everything by myself. I wanted more layers in the dress, so I decided I would use three layers: a white base, a yellow chiffon and a golden organza top. Everything was perfect, but I made the mistake to drape my skirt, instead of make a pattern of a cirlce skirt and again: I wasn’t happy with it. Still, I made pictures with the dress and I love them dearly because they’re so beautiful! 

So I dove in for a third time! New white base, softer yellow chiffon and a different organza! I used the same blue fabric to make a new waistband with bow and the bow in the hair, made a new headdress, discovered that the necklace had more details and changed that too and finally actually styled my wig with volume and this was the result:

Hi, I’m a cosplayer!

And I don’t think I actually introduced myself or my cosplays on this page, although I keep telling myself that I want to use this blog for my writing and my cosplays and coscrafting. So in the next week I am going to introduce my cosplays and today I am going to introduce myself ;)

So yeah *waves awkwardly*, hi. My name is Sofie, I’m 23 years old, female and living in the Netherlands. I work at The Efteling, a Dutch Theme Park based on Europian fairytales, mainly as kitchen employee (wouldn’t call myself a chef). (Fun fact: Some say it’s the Dutch equivalent of Disney, while the Disney parks are younger and Walt Disney actually went to The Efteling to get inspiration for his Disney Parks. Yes, I am a very proud employee.) 

Though I really like cooking and baking, I aspire to work on my tailoring skills and start my own business as a seamstress. 

I still live with my parents, although my boyfriend and I would love to move in together as soon as possible. 

If you would cross my path on a normal (work)day, I’d probably look like the top picture (unless in work clothing), although my hair is actually all blond now. If I have a party or feel like dressing up, I’d probably look more like this:

No clue how to introduce her, because she has got to be one of the most hyped Disney Characters to date. But if you’re still wondering: yes, this is my cosplay of Elsa, Queen of Arendelle. I currently have the Wreck-It Ralph casual outfit (as seen above) and my unfinished version of Olaf’s Frozen Adventure (next picture after the gif). I currently working on her Frozen Fever dress (it has to be finished in two weeks, help me). In case you still don’t who I am talking about: 

This is something stupid, but I have the urge to dislike everything that is overhyped. So as I thought the movie was a beautiful Disney film that did not have the basic trope with “Love is the most important need in the world” written into a male to female relationship but through the love of family, I was not that eager on cosplaying anyone from this franchise. But then. They had to make short. About Christmas. And include the most beau-ti-ful gown. FOR ELSA. After that I started to analyse Elsa’s character and recognize so much of myself in her. And ofcourse one of my best friends agreed to be my Anna and we had a cute duo cosplay: 

My cosplans have increased since I started appreciating Elsa more and right now the only outfit that I never see myself cosplaying, is the Ice Dress (the light blue one in Frozen). I just don’t like that light colour blue and it’s the whole dress. However, the coronation costume were already on my cosplan-list (although I would love to make the Broadway Musical version of that dress, not the film version), my cosplayheart skipped a beat when I saw the pantsuit + coat combination for the first time and that purple gown that was teased was immediately added to my cosplan list. There are still some other versions I would love to cosplay, but those are mostly fanart or my own twists and I don’t know when I will start that and what exactly I will do. 

Elsa is not only a cosplay for me, but also a character I use as an entertainer. Especially when I team up with Anna, they get so much lovely reactions. When we were at the winter edition of DCC (Dutch Comic Con) last fall, there was another event at the bussiness centre, just for kids. We were shooting pictures outside, just in sight for everyone who came from the parking lot to enter the building. “MOM, IT’S ELSA!” “It’s Anna and Elsa!” “DADDADDADDAD, DO YOU SEE HER? THAT’S ANNA!”  They are also too sweet when they want to take a picture with you. Sometimes they are too intimidated to actually stand beside you, but the interaction on itself it just beautiful and so pure.  Teenagers and adults at cons are just the best on conventions when you’re cosplaying as Anna and Elsa. We actually got serenaded with “Let It Go” by a group of teenagers one time and it was amazing and hilarious, haha.  Fun fact: the first name of the “Anna” in the duo pictures is actually Anna! So when we cosplay as Anna and Elsa, only one of us has to listen to two names, haha. 

I am still very hyped to finish my Olaf’s Frozen Adventure dress (especially the cape, I have beautiful ideas for that piece) and hopefully I have something to wear in two weeks for the event, haha. That reminds me, there is this ungoing joke going between me and Anna (as in: the Anna in the pictures), how we hate on me (Elsa) for adding so much details, rhinestones and pieces to the costumes with my ice powers. Mostly I talk about myself in third person (”Elsa, THERE IS NO NEED FOR MORE SPARK-oh you already added another thousand rhinestones. Thanks…”). After we’re done ranting, we always say that the time and effort are seriously worth it, because the result are just so beautiful.  Also: Elsa’s hair is… something else, I guess? Of all the times I styled my wig, the last time was the best. I am not overly fond of the hairstyling in the next picture, but I love the pose.

If you thought I like to cosplay strong, independent women: you are right! Captain Marvel or Carol Danvers is very strong, very independent and very fierce! I cosplayed the comic version of this awesome lady: 

This was one of the hardest things I had ever done by that time: making a bodysuit. I was helped by the fact that I bought a pattern, but firstly I had to make major adjustments, since it was way too big. And secondly: I had to custumize it, because those golden accents and the transition from red to blue weren’t in the pattern. It worked out in the end and I was very proud of myself!

The second issue I had with this cosplay was my body image. I wasn’t really sure about my body and felt the need to lose weight and work out for this cosplay. Even when I did that, I still wasn’t sure about this cosplay when I finished it. However: I still wore it and I got so many compliments!  Nowadays I don’t care about my body and cosplays anymore. I still want to train more to gain muscles, but that is because of my work and I want to become stronger. No more “perfect body” goals for me, I love my body just the way it is!

Another fun fact about this cosplay and the look: this was a reason I dyed my hair blond! I wanted to turn my look around for a couple of years and when I wanted to cosplay Captain Marvel I thought of getting a wig. But the idea of dyeing my hair and use this as a base was very ideal. Now I don’t dye my hair blond for Carol Danvers anymore, haha. I just like the blond and I would love to use it for a modern version of Astrid Hofferson and since the new trailer of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, I really want to do a costest of Zelda with short hair.  I don’t know when I will wear Carol again, but I do know that I will definitely make one (or more) of the MCU suits!

I’ve also removed all the other pictures of him, including the ones in my ‘Introduction to Sapientia Cosplay’-posts (check out this tag!)  I’m going to try to post a cosplay picture again once a week, preferably on Saturday!
