Somalia is prepared to go to war to stop Ethiopia recognising the breakaway territory of Somaliland and building a port there, a senior adviser to Somalia’s president has said.[...]
Last Sunday its president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, called on Somalis to “prepare for the defence of our homeland”, while rallies have been held in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, against the agreement.[...]
Ethiopia and Somalia fought a conflict in 1977-78 over a disputed region and tensions still run deep. Ethiopia [at the time ruled by the US-supported TPLF] invaded Somalia in 2006 to dislodge [the ICU government] from Mogadishu, helping to spark the Al-Shabaab insurgency, and today it is one of the largest contributors of troops in the African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia.[...]
In an interview with the Observer, Somaliland’s foreign minister, Essa Kayd, said the port deal with Ethiopia will “legitimise our self-determination” and could spark a “domino effect” of other countries recognising the territory.[...]
However, there is confusion over the content of the deal between Somaliland and Ethiopia. Neither side has made the full text public.
When it was struck, Somaliland’s president, Muse Bihi Abdi, said Ethiopia had agreed to grant official recognition in return for a 50-year lease of a stretch of coastline, which it will develop for “naval and commercial” purposes. However, Ethiopia said it had only agreed to “make an in-depth assessment towards taking a position regarding the efforts of Somaliland to gain recognition”.
A western diplomat briefed on the deal described it as a “memorandum of misunderstanding”. “Ethiopia insists they did not agree to recognise Somaliland,” the diplomat said.
Kayd said the deal is based on Ethiopia granting recognition to Somaliland: “Without that, nothing is going to happen.” He added that discussions had been progressing “for years”. “Ethiopia needs sea access and we need recognition, so you can see how these needs can be dealt with.”[...]
On Thursday, Abiy’s adviser drew parallels between Ethiopia’s quest for sea access and its construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a potentially transformational hydroelectric project on the Blue Nile, which was built despite objections and military threats from Egypt.[...]
Mohamud visited Eritrea last week and is preparing to travel to Egypt. The countries are Ethiopia’s main regional rivals and have both expressed support for Somalia in the wake of the port deal. “Abiy sees this as a legacy issue,” said Boswell. “If this deal with Somaliland falls through, Ethiopia will try to find a port somewhere else, so this is going to shape regional dynamics for years to come.”

I promise I don't mean to insult you or any ill intent, but I read your post about Colin being Penelope's prize and just wanted to say that the moment I saw the S3 plot, I thought it would be a Regency retelling of your fic dress (which I adore and read daily) 🙈 🙈 I know that when Nicola speaks about Polin it might seem that way, but Luke's interviews have me hopeful for good Colin development, and if it's even half like a Regency version of your story I'll be THRILLED. I hope the season leaves us happy :)
Follow up - I know the plot of dress isn't Pen needing lessons to find suitors but anyway okay maybe you're right and my hope for S3 was wistful thinking 🥺 🙈
Now listen - the moment the plot summary was revealed for S3, I kept saying to myself... wait, this is regency Dress! So yes, I do want that to happen really badly.
My problem is, after two seasons of this show, I know what they prioritize and how they tend to structure their writing, and it doesn't align with what I prefer and would like to see. And that's fine, the show has a different tone and purpose and narration that they want to tell. I'm pretty sure it'll be a decent season of television, casuals will eat it up, and I'll have a good time turning off my brain and watch Nicola and Newts kill it.
But I won't love Colin and Penelope in the show as much as their characters in the books (they're already so different and while they have potential to be absolutely excellent, I don't think they will reach that potential for me... especially since it'll require retconning a lot of Colin - or at least providing sneaky flashbacks of him actually being a matchmaker - and a more character-driven arc for Penelope that the show would never do because they are plot-driven). I do think I'll enjoy the show! I just have a gut feeling that Colin's development won't reach nearly the depth of the books (because if they actually kept the jealousy of Pen's legacy plot I would SCREAM in excitement but I doubt it) because again, the show prioritizes scandal and plot - and all of that means focusing on Colin groveling and Penelope being LW.
Having said all of this - I try to keep my expectations very low because both S1 and S2 disappointed me in regards to Penelope/Colin and them as individuals, so it's hard for me to have hope (except when Nic and Newts talk... they're what's keeping me here). But I would LOVE to be wrong and absolutely love everything about S3 and its direction and the depth and care of the arcs presented. But I've accepted that my Modern AU fic is probably gonna be WAY more in character than the show's out-of-character fanfic that emphasizes groveling, spice, and scandal over the growth and imperfections of the book.
But if S3 really is just regency "Dress" I expect royalties.

i can get behind your backing of new jeans, but the way you defend min hee jin is funny because that woman is crazy. you hate hybe so much that you think she's absolved of any guilt.
Hi Anon. Thanks for your message. I usually delete these asks, but I decided to answer yours.
I have a few questions for you before I share my own opinions.
Why is she crazy? Can you be more specific? Please don't answer with "she's a pedo, witch, groomer." Do you have clear examples of her craziness? What is she guilty of?
Have you ever worked under or lived with a narcissist? Have you experienced narcissistic abuse? What do you know about the effects of narcissistic abuse?
Why is it important for me to view her as crazy?
Do my opinions about her, BSH, NewJeans, or any of the members of BTS matter? Why is it important for me to agree with ARMYs about her?
You think your assessment of MHJ is correct and I think my view of her is correct. Which one of us is right? What if we're both wrong?
Now for my response. I follow a bunch of blogger on this site who don't like MHJ and criticize her. When I read their comments, I make a choice to either shrug it off and accept that we don't all have to see eye to eye, or in some cases, I just stop following them. I have never sent an anonymous ask questioning their views of her. Like seriously, who cares? We are all entitled to our own opinions. Nothing I say on this platform has any importance or impact whatsoever.
Contrary to popular belief (apparently), I am not some MHJ super fan. I don't have an altar of her set up in my home. There are things I like about her, though.
I enjoy her taste in music. You can see her playlists on her IG account. I like that she sources songs from up and coming indie women songwriters like Erika de Casier and Benee. I like that her creative directors are a woman and an openly out gay man. That's basically unheard of in highly misogynistic and homophobic SK. I like that the members of NJ aren't emaciated. I like that they're dressed like teenagers/young adults instead of Lolitas meant to appeal to middle-aged men. I like that she wants to change the K-pop industry, because it desperately needs an overhaul.
As for Bang Si Hyuk. I don't hate him as much as he saddens me. It's hard to watch him piss away all the money BTS made over the years. And now he's pissing away their creative legacy with his weird obsession with Western validation. To be honest, watching BSH move is like watching a Greek tragedy. Maybe he started out as a hero (yeah, no), but along the way he became blinded by hubris, ego, and greed. Sadly, he has the potential to bring down many other with him if he falls and fails.
Finally, all I want is for the members of BTS to be free. I want them to make the music they want to make, together and/or solo. I want them to have the freedom to live normal lives, speak their minds, have relationships, and so on and so on. I REALLY want Jimin out of the company, because they have never treated him fairly or equally, and they never will as long as BSH is at the helm.
Keeping tabs on HYBE is a diversion for me and blogging about what's going on is a hobby. That's as far as I take it. For entertainment purposes, I'm really looking forward to season 2 of BSH vs. MHJ! Let the battle continue! The NJ girls are likely days away from terminating their contracts with HYBE. Now everyone - Tokkis and ARMYs alike - should be happy.
I shared this article about MHJ a few months ago. I'm not sure if anyone read it or not, but it's really good. The interview with her took place before all the drama began and it's so interesting to read her thoughts on the industry. For those of you who don't want to read it, here's what she said about BTS:
Some BTS fans want to compare how well one member’s album does over another member’s. BTS is a group that’s been around for 10 years now. They did their duty, basically. So I think it’s time to focus less on the stats and just enjoy their music—[let them] do what they want to do.
What she said about working with Taehyung was really nice, too. Anyway, here's the article again. Basically, she and BSH are polar opposites when it comes to their approach to music and the industry. For the life of me, I can't get this article to embed. Sorry.
https://www.fastcompany.com/91113146/k-pops-leading-company-has-declared-war-on-itself-this-never-seen-interview-profiles-the-creative-legend-at-the-center-of-it
P.S. One last thing on this already too-long post. I believe the parallels between MHJ and Jimin are strong. They're both super creative and have high standards. They're also both at the center of BSH's ire for being successful without him. MHJ's so-called crazy outbursts and press conferences are in line with someone who is new to gaslighting and narcissistic abuse. She was also a full grown adult when it started. BTW, gaslighting DOES make you crazy. I know first hand. Jimin's response to the years of mistreatment - pulling away, keeping a low profile, operating in self-preservation mode - is also indicative of someone who has been on the receiving end for a long time and from an early age. That's my armchair psychiatrist's take on things.

By Charlie Savage and Michael Gold
Nov. 18, 2024
President-elect Donald J. Trump confirmed on Monday that he intended to declare a national emergency and use the U.S. military in some form to assist in his plans for mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
On his social media platform, Truth Social, Mr. Trump responded overnight to a post made earlier this month by Tom Fitton, who runs the conservative group Judicial Watch, and who wrote that Mr. Trump’s administration would “declare a national emergency and will use military assets” to address illegal immigration “through a mass deportation program.”
At around 4 a.m., Mr. Trump reposted Mr. Fitton’s post with the comment, “TRUE!!!”
Congress has granted presidents broad power to declare national emergencies at their discretion, unlocking standby powers that include redirecting funds lawmakers had appropriated for other purposes. During his first term, for example, Mr. Trump invoked this power to spend more on a border wall than Congress had been willing to authorize.
In interviews with The New York Times during the Republican primary campaign, described in an article published in November 2023, Mr. Trump’s top immigration policy adviser, Stephen Miller, said that military funds would be used to build “vast holding facilities that would function as staging centers” for immigrants as their cases progressed and they waited to be flown to other countries.
The Homeland Security Department would run the facilities, he said.
One major impediment to the vast deportation operation that the Trump team has promised in his second term is that Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, lacks the space to hold a significantly larger number of detainees than it currently does.
That has sometimes led to allowing asylum seekers into the country while they await court dates with immigration judges, a practice critics deride as “catch and release.”
The Trump team believes that such camps could enable the government to accelerate deportations of undocumented people who fight their expulsion from the country. The idea is that more people would voluntarily accept removal instead of pursuing a long-shot effort to remain in the country if they had to stay locked up in the interim.
Asked about the proposal, Sabrina Singh, a spokeswoman for the Pentagon, declined to comment, calling it “a hypothetical.” In general, she added, such a plan would typically undergo “a rigorous process” before being enacted, but she declined to elaborate.
Immigrant advocates assailed the move, raising alarms about the potential fallout.
“President-elect Trump’s dystopian fantasies should send a chill down everyone’s spine, whether immigrant or native-born,” said Karen Tumlin, the director of the Justice Action Center, an immigrant advocacy organization. “Not only is what he is describing in all likelihood illegal, this move would be the exact opposite of the legacy of service in which my family members were proud to participate.”
Robyn Barnard, the senior director of refugee advocacy at Human Rights First, asserted that the consequences would be far-ranging. “Families will be torn apart, businesses left without vital employees, and our country will be left to pick up the pieces for years to come,” she added.
Congressional Democrats responded with a similar level of incredulity, asserting that such a move was all but certain to violate federal laws preventing the use of the military on American soil.
“We’re pursuing whatever we can do to make clear that the Insurrection Act should not permit that use of the military,” said Senator Richard Blumenthal, Democrat of Connecticut, referring to the 1807 law that grants presidents emergency power to use troops on domestic soil to restore order when they decide a situation warrants it. Under that law, “if there is no threat to public order of a fundamental, far-reaching kind, it would be illegal,” he added.
Republicans, however, suggested that Mr. Trump’s proposal might not be a radical departure from the status quo.
“Obviously they’re not law enforcement, but I have to see what their process is,” said Senator James Lankford, Republican of Oklahoma, who served as the lead Republican negotiator on a bipartisan immigration deal that failed to pass the Senate after Mr. Trump urged the G.O.P. to reject it. “If the National Guard is providing transportation, they do that a lot already.”
Hard-right members of Congress and staunch supporters of Mr. Trump have expressed broad support for his proposal for mass deportations. Senator Tommy Tuberville, Republican of Alabama, chimed in on social media on Monday to back using the military for such an effort, saying Mr. Trump was “100% correct.”
Mr. Miller has also talked about invoking a public health emergency power to curtail hearing asylum claims, as the Trump administration did during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mr. Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the southern border amid a surge in asylum seekers and his reprogramming of military funds toward his border wall in 2019 was a face-saving way out of a spending standoff with Congress that had led to a government shutdown. It led to legal challenges that had not been definitively resolved before President Biden took over and halted further construction on the border wall.
Mr. Trump’s team said it had developed a multifaceted plan to significantly increase the number of deportations, which it thought could be accomplished without new legislation from Congress, although it anticipated legal challenges.
Other elements of the team’s plan include bolstering the ranks of ICE officers with law enforcement officials who would be temporarily reassigned from other agencies, and with state National Guardsmen and federal troops activated to enforce the law on domestic soil under the Insurrection Act.
The team also plans to expand a form of due-process-free expulsions known as expedited removal, which is currently used near the border for recent arrivals, to people living across the interior of the country who cannot prove they have been in the United States for more than two years.
And the team plans to stop issuing citizenship-affirming documents, like passports and Social Security cards, to infants born on domestic soil to undocumented migrant parents in a bid to end birthright citizenship.
Mr. Trump has already signaled his intent to follow through on his promises with personnel announcements. He named Mr. Miller as a deputy chief of staff in his administration with influence over domestic policy. And Mr. Trump said he would make Thomas Homan, who ran ICE for the first year and a half of the Trump administration and was an early proponent of separating families to deter migrants, his administration’s “border czar.”
Mr. Homan told The New York Times in 2023 that he had met with Mr. Trump shortly after the now president-elect announced that he would seek office again. During that meeting, Mr. Homan said, he “agreed to come back” in a second term and would “help to organize and run the largest deportation operation this country’s ever seen.”

The Last Ronin: Could Judith Hoag Return to TMNT?
Tumblr media
When it comes to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, there’s no denying that April O'Neil, as portrayed by Judith Hoag in the 1990 live-action film, holds a special place in fans' hearts. Now, with the upcoming adaptation of The Last Ronin, the buzz around her potential involvement has hit a fever pitch. If you're a TMNT fan, this could be the “Cowabunga moment” you've been waiting for. The Last Ronin: A Dark Turn for the Turtles The Last Ronin isn’t your typical Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles story. It’s a darker, grittier narrative that veers away from the lighthearted tone most fans are accustomed to. Set in a dystopian future, only one turtle remains standing, carrying the weight of his fallen brothers on his shell. This story isn’t just a wild ride for the fans—it's a deep dive into themes of loss, revenge, and redemption, making it one of the most anticipated adaptations in TMNT history. Judith Hoag: The April O'Neil We Know and Love Judith Hoag’s portrayal of April O'Neil in the 1990 movie is nothing short of iconic. For many fans, she is April O'Neil. Her return to the franchise in any capacity would be a dream come true. Tom Waltz, the writer behind The Last Ronin, has openly expressed his desire to bring Hoag back into the fold. In a recent interview, Waltz mentioned that it would be a major "Cowabunga moment" for the franchise if Hoag were involved in the adaptation. Waltz's comments have fans buzzing with excitement. Imagine Hoag reprising her role in this darker, more mature TMNT universe. The potential for nostalgia is off the charts, and let’s be real—who wouldn’t want to see April O'Neil back in action, possibly taking on a more complex and layered role? A “Cowabunga” Moment in the Making Waltz’s enthusiasm for Hoag's return isn’t just fan service; it's a testament to how much she means to the TMNT legacy. While nothing is confirmed yet, the possibility of Hoag lending her voice or even appearing in a live-action adaptation of The Last Ronin has fans speculating wildly. Whether she reprises her role as April or takes on a new character, her involvement would undoubtedly add a layer of authenticity and nostalgia that fans crave. Imagine the impact of Hoag stepping back into the TMNT universe after more than three decades. It would be like a perfect full-circle moment, not just for her but for fans who grew up with her as April. And let's not forget, Hoag’s previous cameo in 2016's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows was cut, leaving fans yearning for more. This time around, she deserves more than just a cameo—she deserves a role that does justice to her contribution to the franchise. The Fan Demand: Nostalgia with a Purpose For many of us who grew up with the Ninja Turtles, Judith Hoag’s April O'Neil was a formative part of our childhood. Her return to the TMNT franchise would be a nostalgic trip down memory lane, but with the depth and maturity that The Last Ronin promises, it could be so much more. Fans aren’t just looking for a walk down memory lane—they want to see Hoag in a role that’s as impactful as the story itself. It’s clear that the fanbase is hungry for her return, and it’s something that creators across all mediums should take note of. Whether it’s in the upcoming video game adaptation or the live-action film, Judith Hoag's involvement in The Last Ronin could be the key to bridging the old with the new, offering something for both long-time fans and newcomers alike. Final Thoughts The potential for Judith Hoag's return to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise through The Last Ronin is the stuff of fan dreams. It would be a powerful nostalgia boost, but more importantly, it would bring full circle a character that helped define the TMNT universe for a generation. As Tom Waltz put it, this could be the ultimate “Cowabunga moment” for the franchise, blending the past with the present in a way that only the Ninja Turtles can pull off. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyvlmaJCmRU Read the full article

DATE — 2024년 03월 EVENT —  WORKSHOP OPPORTUNITY 002 WORD COUNT — 552
The interview loomed larger-than-life before Hanbin. For a few weeks now, he's been thinking about his progress and how the label looked at his position along the idol path. So, Hanbin approached the coaches wearing a polite smile. His composure remained steadfast, ready to face any questions they would throw his way.
what do you think are your strengths right now?
"I wholeheartedly believe in my dancing prowess. Despite lacking prior experience or a specialty training, I likened myself to a sponge, eagerly absorbing each new technique rather quickly!" His voice carried its usual cadence of a bouncy disposition. With a grin that echoed his love for dance, he wanted to express himself freely, "By being confident in how easily I absorb teachings, I honed not only my dance abilities and limits but also other skills, such as my vocals and performance charms. Each skill sharpened by strict discipline and my simple dedication that pours into my training. And for me, it's not about mastering everything totally; it's about unlocking my full potential. I found a synergy between my vocals and newfound flair for leaving a lasting impression in my performances."
what are three skills that you would like to work on in the next few months?
With a glint in his eyes, he said, "My aspirations definitely plan to reach beyond the stage. Now that I'm fully within the label, I see more future opportunities to broaden my horizons and my portfolio, of course. Modeling and acting call my name," He laughed, politely, "And I believe it'll complement my onstage presence." There did exist another passion—one that resonated deeply with his soul. "I do also have a fascination with lyric composition, fueled by my love for literature. I have an affinity for writing that started with school, and I want to blend that with my idol path." Still, whether it be modeling, acting, or writing lyrics, Hanbin will approach it brightly.
if given a chance, what types of gigs would you be interested in participating?
He gave the coach a thoughtful nod, "I'm eager to one day step into the role of a visual representative and do endorsement deals for brands seeking to draw an audience with their products. Just the thought of endorsement deals holds a particular appeal to me, since it'll allow me to sort of weave my own persona into the fabric of a brand's identity." He speaks rather cleanly, almost as if it's already an interview for a project, so evident that he saw himself as more than just a performer. "Using my image to relate with consumers on a surface level takes skill and craft, and I can't wait to take on modeling gigs.” He has a sense of purpose and determination as of late, and this interview came at perfect timing.
during your time here in legacy, what are some of the lessons that you’ve learned about yourself?
Hanbin admitted, "I've always been prone to perfectionism, a relentless taskmaster that I am, but I've learned to curb this through hard-earned lessons. I now understand that mistakes are not marks of failure but rather skipping stepping stones on the path I want to lead. Each stumble a chance to rise again, stronger and better than before. Legacy definitely tested and tempered my traits as soon as I got signed, and I now have a better understanding of my own limitations and potential." Legacy had taught him that growth was not a destination but a journey—a continuous journey. A wry smile, "I can't promise to never make mistakes again. But what I can promise is a commitment to keep moving forward."

I do occasionally enjoy Bari Weiss’ episodes but she is such a fucking idiot sometimes lol and maybe I’m just that aggressive about it bc I really hate the whole “America must be the world police bc it’s better than China or Russia”
she interviewed RFK Jr last summer and I was listening again to remind myself why I found their foreign policy disagreement frustrating. and RFK basically was like we need to roll back on the military ventures bc we can’t sustain it and we are making enemies all over the world. and she strongly disagreed bc of the big boogey man China and listed their imperialism of Africa. but left out the why behind that imperialism. and unfortunately the why does matter bc it gives context to the different strategies the US and China are using to empower themselves.
China is not a perfect government by any means. I take issue with their Belt and Road Initiative among other things but they are flexing their economic strength. and they are proving that the US hegemony of protecting multinational corporations is not the only system that nations have to opt into (though China cares about China above all, I don’t see them as freeing anybody. obviously that’s not their interest). the sanctions enacted on Russia and this pressure of isolating them financially has not stopped or significantly weakened Russia bc China and other countries outside of the West will still trade with Russia bc they probably are not interested in picking sides in this proxy war. so that shows that economic punishment by the West can be undermined which I’m sure is opening some eyes on how the world power is shifting.
and the fear of the US government is that China (and Russia is usually grouped in too) is becoming the alternative power that is accessing ports in the Caribbean and in Asia so now there’s enacted plans to expand our military in the pacific in case China becomes too powerful. I don’t think China wants to go to war with us though... I think based on the infrastructure projects and the mining in Africa, they’re wanting to lead in technological advancements and manufacturing but they need the natural resources bc that’s what is needed in a fuck ton of stuff now (Russia has some dealings with some African nations as well but that seems more for strengthening ties to gain allies outside of the West and trading weapons and natural resources).
if the Chinese make a ton of shit then anyone who doesn’t make that shit is beholden to them when they need it. that’s power too. along with indebting countries to you and then gaining access to ports for trade and military purposes (bc the US keeps trying to flex militarily) and also possibly gaining political power by potentially influencing politics in these developing countries’ governments. I don’t believe economic power is necessarily weaker than military power and the two global powers seem to be fighting different battles. or the US is fighting a different battle than China.
and I’m sure at first glance for countries tired of US military presence (with our what…800 or so bases worldwide), China’s massive economic “funding” is more appealing. even with smaller countries, they don’t want to choose between China or the US. they want to ally with the US for protection but prefer China when it comes to economic deals. both are bad lol but my point is this world police position (that isn’t even about protecting US citizens or democracy) seems to be weakening and it is wise not to lean into military ventures. but I know Trump and Biden both don’t see this as an option so.
also how callous and ignorant of US imperialist history do you have to be. the various countries that the US has attacked and invaded remember what our government and military did to them. the annexations, the regime changes, the carpet bombing. the legacy of the US military and superpower status should not be a shining light or explained away as “protecting national security.” we are honestly so lucky that we haven’t been invaded by anyone at this point.

I feel very uncomfortable abt the Fred Astaire biopic given he absolutely did not want one to happen and was extremely clear about that. If it ends up happening I will 100% think less of everyone involved including Tom, it is a sign of extreme disrespect imo and Tom does not need the money it is just a fuck you I can do what I want, akin to spitting on FA's grave.
I think the problem with Tom Holland isnt his agent because lets be real, his agent and team are excellent. I think from interviews etc Tom is not that interested in film as an art form, doesn't seem aware of indie or foreign directors doing interesting work, and is pretty anti-intellectualism in general. So when he tries to "go indie" he tries to go for projects that seem gritty or interesting on paper, but end up flopping and coming across "THIS IS ACTING, TAKE ME SERIOUSLY." Tom has the power to approach indie directors he likes and get movies funded for him to star in like Robert Pattinson with Safdies, Claire Denis, etc etc. But Tom is not the type to know who Claire Denis is. He should work with someone like Jeremy Saulnier, that is my advice to him lol
I totally respect your uncomfortable feelings about it as a topic, anon! You're right, Astaire was clear about not wanting a bio pic on his life, because he - in his own words - never wanted to feel misrepresented, and any adaptation or exploration of his life as a result feels inherently disrespectful of that wish.
At the same time though - - I don't know. I guess I tend to have two questions about a bio pic, which is a) what is its purpose? and b) who's it for?
(Full disclaimer: I don't disagree with you - I just also have mmm, a mixed bag of feelings on the topic, I guess, haha.)
So let's talk a little about bio pics
Because it's an interesting conversation, right? They've always been a staple of filmmaking, both for better and for worse, and I do think they vary a lot as a genre. Some of them are naked mouthpieces for the individual or their estate, some are ways to enshrine or disparage an historical figure, some are about capitalising on a current popular trend, some are ways to explore a historical movement or era, to lend it greater understanding or cultural context through a particular person, or to keep an important figure from being forgotten or remembered in a way people with a vested interest might not want them to be remembered, and hell, sometimes I think a bio pic is just about telling an interesting story.
Does intent matter? Yeah, I think so, and I can understand why, in that context, intent can feel immediately malicious when the person a story is based on or inspired by was against the idea, but I don't necessarily think that's automatically the case.
I guess, in that sense, that brings it back to who a bio pic is for. I actually tend to think bio pics are at their worst when they're for the person they're about. Like, I enjoyed Elvis as a piece of entertainment, but as a bio pic it fails on more counts than it doesn't, in no small part because it was for Elvis. It was for his legacy, his daughter and grandchildren, his diehard, uncritical fans, and, in my more cynical moments, for Graceland too. It was about reinforcing a legacy instead of truly exploring it.
And exploring it is important. Good bio pics can help to shed more light and bring a deeper understanding to crucial moments and figures in history, and how someone wants to be represented or understood in that I don't think is entirely their decision. We don't exist in a vacuum; our stories, our histories, the roles we play in the world, aren't ours alone to dictate the terms of. We play roles in other peoples lives, from those who know us, and in the case of many public figures, those who know of them, and to make the decision unilaterly that our legacy can't be explored beyond us is I think both naive and potentially dangerous.
I don't know. It is complicated, and I'm not even saying that I'm entirely comfortable either with the fact that it's happening, especially given there are two Astaire bio pics in the works right now (ironically the other one's cast Jamie Bell, which is kind of funny from a Billy Elliot trivia standpoint), but like I said in my last post, I don't know if I believe that Astaire's wishes should stand so resolutely as others. After all, the law doesn't recognise that stipulation, and if it did, what would there be to stop other people using that as a sort of media gag to prevent critical bio pics that challenge the legacy of a public figure i.e. the counter point to Elvis being able to be this year's Priscilla?
I guess I'm saying that our histories might feel like a thread that belongs to us, but they're ones stitched into the fabric of time and of culture. They inform relationships and families, and in Astaire's case an artform and an industry, and to me, I don't think that means that he owes anyone more than what he gave in his lifetime, but I do think a version of his story lives beyond him - both in the lives he touched and the culture he influenced - and for better and for worse, that's not something he'll ever have complete control over.
Let's talk about Tom Holland
I agree and I disagree on this front - as a total cinephile, I truly feel the pain of him not having known who Pedro Almodóvar was in that one interview, haha, but I don't necessarily think that's an issue. After all, it's literally what he has an agent and a manager for. They should be looking at talent across the board and guiding him towards people they think he'd work well with, especially given he has worked with indie directors before - like, gosh, Kornél Mundruczó was the establishing director on The Crowded Room, and Antonio Campos directed The Devil All the Time.
But you're right - the projects aren't right, and I don't think that it helps that he doesn't seem to be well versed in cinema enough to be able to articulate what it is that he likes and doesn't like, and I also don't think that it helps that he skews young and doesn't really match the styles of the directors he's said he wants to work with (Tarantino in particular I think he doesn't fit the type for, but in looking up a couple of things to reply to your ask, I found out he did meet with Bong Joon Ho last year who I actually think could be a good fit for him).
I like your picks for directors a lot though! I think you're right about Jeremy Saulnier in particular. and while I'm not his biggest fan, I think Justin Kurzel could have a really interesting role for him in that sort of similarly masculinity-soaked indie vein. I also think (and gosh, these aren't even that indie these days, haha) Alex Garland, Karyn Kusama, Dan Gilroy and Marielle Heller would be interesting directors for him.
And while they're not indie, I do also think he'd do well in a Coen Brothers or a Baz Luhrmann.
But who knows at this point. He certainly runs the risk of being Peter Parker forever right now.

a little essay on felix
about a year ago a part of the internet had a meltdown because an twitter account claimed that a museum wall label about Felix Gonzalez Torres's art had erased the dimensions of his sickness, his lover's death, from his art. the tweet spread like wildfire on the internet, including tumblr, leading to a vociferous but personal crusade for someone at the museum to pay for these crimes of queer erasure. speculative charges were laid against the foundation that stewards and cares for felix's estate, arguing that there was dark and evil conspiracy against felix's legacy that sought to sanitize it and turn it into nothing but a formalist sculpture.
felix's work however, is unabashedly formalist in nature. as felix stated in his interview with tom rollins, "i love formal issues... forms gather meaning from their historical moment. [...] after twenty years of feminist discourse and feminist theory we have come to realize that "just looking" is not just looking but that looking is invested with identity: gender, socio-economic status, race, sexual orientation... looking is invested with lots of other texts." felix, by nature of his work and deliberate engagement with the movements of formalism and minimalism, sought to invest his works with a critical distance and porousness that allowed viewers to see the works however they saw them. his works elide and elude meaning, both by eschewing titles but by offering potential interpretations in parentheses (the oft cited "Perfect Lovers" and "Portrait for Ross" are prime examples).
the danger, however, is that our love for the personal narrative has led us to over-empathize and personalize. why, indeed, do we worry that a small piece of paper directing a reader attention is a form of erasure? sure, a museum spokesperson later confirmed, the museum eventually edited the description to mention both personal and formal aesthetic qualities. but does art require a wall label to tell us how to think? felix's position about directing readers to particular interpretations evolved over his career. in his 1988 exhibition, the first after his MFA thesis, felix penned a statement that he hoped "would allow an active participation in the unravelling of the meaning and purpose of [his] work". felix would avoid similar statements or pronouncements that could be displayed in the gallery later in his career. as he matured as an artist, his position on explaining the work also evolved.
what i'm often frustrated by is that in arguing about queer erasure and how one should interpret felix's work, many individuals presume a familiarity with felix's work and how he should be read. i'm guilty of this too -- i have spent so many years studying and reading about his work that i speak about him with his first name. still, i think to read felix's work as purely tragic, purely gay, purely informed by the history of aids is to remove other compelling readings of his formal brilliance, his experimentation with material and installation. his explorations of space and distance -- both physical and aesthetic. if we put identity at the center of felix's artwork, we obscure the radical politics of his work which drives the longevity and appeal of his work. i'm not insisting that the queer angle of his work is not important. but i think as an artist to always be known for just one aspect of your work is also a form of barbarism. this form of misunderstanding is also, something we must work against. not because we cannot appreciate an artist from our personal subjectivities, but because meaningful engagement with art is predicated recognizing our own positions, biases, and frames of reference.
