Even though it's been a good three years since I started going by one of my own, I still catch myself thinking on and off about my family's odd relationship with men's names.
Like, my paternal grandfather's name was Bob. Not Robert, Bob. And it wasn't that he was Robert on his birth certificate and everyone just called him Bob his entire life, no no. His legal documents from 18 on read Bob [LastName], and the name on his birth certificate is Bobby.
Because see, Grandpa was born a premie and a twin in like, 1919, and everybody just assumed that they were going to die, so they wrote "Billy" and "Bobby" on the birth certificates and brought them home to at least make it comfortable. But then my great-grandmother swaddled them both up, put them in bread tins, and stuck them in an oven on very low heat, essentially creating a rudimentary incubator, and they both survived, eventually living to the ages of 86 and 93 respectively. So they just went with Bill and Bob for their whole lives.
And this is mostly fine until you factor in that there's really only four male names in my dad's side of the family, which get used over and over again: William, Richard, Robert and Oliver. And only kid per generation gets to be Oliver because that was great-grandpa's name and that kid gets the number behind his name. The highest that's currently gotten is Oliver IV, my second cousin, who I believe is 8.
So my dad is named William Richard and he's got cousins named Oliver III and Richard Robert, whose kids are named Oliver IV and Robert William. Dad's also got an Uncle Bill and an Uncle Oliver Jr., who are the older and twin brothers of his dad Bob.
ALSO. My mother, who married William, also has a brother named William. And a father named William. And, for a time, a brother-in-law named William, at least until my aunt stopped taking her meds and starting hearing the voice of God.
Apparently when my brother was born, my mother turned to my father and said, "Okay look, if you want to name him 'William Jr.', we can and I'm fine with that, but we're giving him a different middle name to call him until he grows up okay?"
And my father said, "Oh god no we don't need to add to that mess."
So they named him Stuart.

so I’ve been listening to the entirety of Feather Summarizes the Silmarillion, a podcast on Patreon that is somewhat misleadingly titled in that yes it follows the Silmarillion, no it is not in any sense of the term a summary. It’s good though.
A large part of the reason it is not a summary but is quite good, is that Feather will go off on long sidelines about all sorts of semi-related topics, and in the long peace part 4 bonus episode (I do not know what I’m going to do with myself when I finish this thing) one of those semi-related topics is about how people tend to misremember history and specifically how people tend to misremember protest culture as being basically non-existent around 9/11 when it wasn’t, and oof, yeah, I know. I was there.
And it’s not surprising people tend to misremember this. Who wants to tell the story? The neoconservatives don’t want to tell a story of large scale anti-war protests. And the sorts of people who approved of the protests also don’t want to talk about it, because we tend to be kind of invested in the narrative that if you get large numbers of people protesting in the streets you’ll get what you want. That protesting works.
And it kinda didn’t.
And that’s not just a “well, non-violent protests…” we were blocking freeways and shit, ok? It didn’t work.
(I mean, not that blocking a freeway is an act of violence. But you’d think it was the way commuters get pissed off about it.)
this is getting into interpretation of events so I’m not sure how to fact check it as such, but my personal understanding of (left wing) protest culture in the late 90’s and early 2000’s is there was this rising wave of energy and enthusiasm focused against globalization — free trade agreements, the IMF/World Bank, I don’t know if people were talking about “austerity measures” at the time but that sort of thing, and the “race to the bottom” where corporations are free to move to wherever the labor is cheapest and has the fewest regulations and then the actual people aren’t allowed to move into the countries with better labor laws.
(I’m trying to be careful to explain what I mean by globalization because at least at the time, progressives and radicals would start talking about the problems of globalization and liberals/moderates would…intentionally or unintentionally misunderstand what you were objecting to. And at least some conservatives, anecdotally, would go “yeah we think the UN is scary too” and uh, no, not what this is about.)
Anyhow, growing anti-globalization movement in the US (and very much in other places, but I’m talking about the US here) then got massively derailed by 9/11 itself (there was a DC protest I planned on going to with some friends a couple months after 9/11 and they all bailed because they figured any protest that criticized US policy so soon after 9/11 would seem out of touch and insensitive) and by the war on Afghanistan and the war on Iraq because people have finite organizing energy and the wars, mostly the Iraq War, became the main focus.
And then as far as I can tell things stalled out for a bit until Occupy. The peace protests still went on, and I imagine protests around a number of other things that got relatively consistent if not overwhelmingly news-worthy presences. But they didn’t have the same energy.
Except of course for the gay rights movement, especially the marriage equality fight, which was substantial and highly successful.

hiiiii I'm new to your page but i would like to ask you what would've happened if simon mail-ordered a bride?
mail-order bride
you stare down at the address on the card, blinking as you reread the house number and look back up at the cottage in front of you. the numbers match, but you just need a few more minutes before you knock on the door.
you're not holding too many things. you have one suitcase with the entirety of your belongings at one side, the cat carrier sitting on top of it. on the other side, you hold a bundle of papers. your immigration papers, all shiny and new, your birth certificate, and your new british passport.
when you look back down, you swallow as you read over your name. it's odd, to see something new in the section labeled SURNAME.
Riley.
you've never met him. this isn't legal, it can't be, to have all of these things. he must be someone important. someone they value. or maybe, they are just too afraid to say no to him.
the front door opens, and you freeze on the spot as you see someone duck their head to step outside. they're wearing a mask, covering their entire face except for their dark eyes, but it's hitched up over his nose as he holds an unlit cigarette between his lips.
he stares as he sees you at the end of the steps. he frowns, looking you up and down.
"weren't supposed ta be 'ere for a few weeks."
your eyes water a little, but you only manage a shrug.
"i-i..." you meet his eyes. "i-i couldn't stay there any longer. i didn't have anywhere else to go."
he tucks the cigarette back behind his ear, slipping the mask off. it reveals a tousled mess of short blonde hair and a terribly scarred face. his eyes dart to the little carrier sitting next to you when he hears a soft meow coming from it.
"said no pets."
your lip trembles.
"please," you whisper, and his lip twitches as he fights off a scowl. you imagine he must not have much practice in hiding his emotions. he comes down the steps anyways, coming closer, and you pick up the carrier as he snatches the suitcase off the pavement, making his way back inside. you follow him, naturally.
when you close the door behind you, you're surprised at how quaint it all is. nice brick fireplace, a soft carpet (no shoes allowed is what he snapped at you), and wonderfully furnished to make the place cozy, warm, lived-in. there's throw blankets and accent pillows. there's pictures on the walls, paintings, yellow corner lights to give everything a soft glow. the kitchen is beautiful, with lovely colored tile and wooden cutting boards, a drip-coffee setup in the corner and worn cookbooks stacked neatly by a stainless steel toaster. there's herbs growing in little pots sitting on the windowsill above the sink, and there's a cast iron pot decoratively resting on the stove.
it's spick-span clean. there's no specks of dust or splatters left over from bacon grease. there's papers pinned to the fridge, lists to remind him to buy whole milk and sliced bread and call about the internet bill being charged twice again.
you set the carrier down on the couch, unzipping the top. a little curious black head pokes out of it, and you reach in and pick the cat up under its belly and drop it onto the floor. immediately, the cat spreads its front paws, claws sticking out as they begin to knead the carpet and use it as a personal scratcher, the prick, prick, prick sound enough to draw the giant man out of the bedroom with a hard frown on his face.
he points at the thing and shakes his head.
"keep tha' thing off the fawkin' counter," he snaps at you. he purses his lips when he sees you still standing there, afraid to even move. he comes closer, the cat scurrying off, and he yanks your coat and scarf off, going to the hang them up by the door. "can unpack tomorrow. need t'make somethin' ta eat."
you move immediately towards the kitchen, hoping he keeps a stocked fridge, but he puts out a big hand and stops you, stepping in front of you.
"the fuck are y'doin'?" he asks, and you blink up at him.
"you said to make dinner...s-sir?"
he tilts his head to the side, narrowing his eyes.
"y'listen t'this," he murmurs. "women don't lift a fuckin' finger in this house, y'hear?"
you nod, and he reaches up and palms your throat, cupping your jaw.
"and my wife doesn't call me sir," he mutters. "it's simon."
you soften a little. "i-i'm sorry, simon."
"don't apologize," he grits his teeth. "did nothin' wrong."
when a fresh set of tears comes down your face, he wipes them away with ease, calloused thumb swiping over your cheeks and quieting you. he puts something into your hands, a velvet box that he must've gotten when he went to put your suitcase away.
"y'r a riley now, yeah?" he murmurs, and you tilt your head at an angle, and your foreheads brush together when he bends low to speak to you. "act like it."
you lean up on your toes (he's so fucking tall), and you kiss him softly beside his mouth. when he moves his head, your lips brush against each other, but he pulls back to make his way to the kitchen. you hear the gas stove light up, and a few minutes later, there's a familiar smell of onions hitting hot olive oil.
you take a seat on the couch, smiling to yourself, wiping your eyes as you curl up there. you flip open the box, sighing shakily when you see the rectangular diamond and matching gold wedding band. when simon comes back in to give you a mug of tea, you take it with your left hand, and his eyes flicker when he notices the new jewelry there, so pretty, so new.
mine.
when he pads back into the kitchen, the cat blinks up at him slowly, green eyes bright as they sit on the counter.
simon walks past it, saying nothing at all.

VPNs do not make you more secure
here's how they work!
first of all, most of your internet traffic is already encrypted via TLS (Transport Layer Security). Things that aren't encrypted are usually videogames or less important applications.
a VPN encrypts traffic between your computer and the VPN server you're using.
your Internet Service Provider (ISP) sits in the middle of that transaction.
cue the MS paint diagram
Without a VPN:
Tumblr media
With a VPN:
Tumblr media
the traffic between your VPN server and the rest of the internet is not encrypted any further.
things that VPNs are good for:
bypassing geo-blocking
bypassing website blocks set up by your ISP
obscuring network traffic from your ISP
things that VPNs are not good for:
browsing the internet without having your activity logged. every company that gives internet service logs the activity, it's half of how they make sure they're not being hacked.
hiding information from the government. VPN providers WILL bend to subpoenas, they WILL turn over logs of your network activity.
cybersecurity. VPNs can't save you once the traffic is between them and the final destination. they don't analyze your traffic to detect and stop hackers, they don't add any encryption where it matters.
VPNs are not a shortcut to security. you cannot pay 15 dollars a month to forgo all responsibility for your own digital privacy. do your research, use a password manager, stay safe.
my friends i hope you find this information useful. you have been sold a lie. remember to show extreme skepticism to youtube sponsorships and journalism websites which sing their praises.
sources: i have a certificate iv in cybersecurity

Help a Transgender Woman who is Homeless and Living on the Street Replace Her Glitchy, Malfunctioning Phone on its Last Legs Before it Gives up the Ghost
October 19th 2024
Tumblr media
Hi it's Thistle Ishtar Daggers-Drawn again. I want to take a second to thank you all for all of the help you've given so far. I'm much better off than the last time I posted.
Unfortunately, being homeless is an endless parade of problems and my wife as a homeless person Is no exception.
My phone, which is a crappy $40 phone to begin with, is on its last legs with the screen registering selections In the wrong places and also the charge port doing That Thing where it needs the cord to be In a very specific position no matter what cord it is while also refusing to charge the battery at anything more than a snail's pace.
I need a new line and also new service because I'm slowly losing access to every single fast food restaurant as they tell me to get out and stop using their Wi-Fi.
The cheapest I can find in this town is the Debut 6 from Cricket Wireless which is $76 with a service plan that includes five gigabytes of data.
As for getting a phone through the lifeline program, otherwise known as an Obama phone, I need an ID to get EBT which is what I need to be eligible for that phone and I'm still in the process of retrieving my birth certificate, Social Security card, and other paperwork.
Please help me raise $78 so I can continue to access the internet, have access to my bank cards, and stay in touch with my friends and family.
Cash App: $ThistleDD
Venmo: @ThistleDD
Western Union: (616)580-4844 or [email protected]
Thank all for your help so far! I really could not be doing as well as I am without your help! Every bit of it is appreciated and needed.

I think I grew too much on the internet to understand how some people have blog names.
Like, I'm from IRC and trans communities, if your username is bball24, that's your name. I assume your mom addresses you by that name and it reads the same on your driver's license and maybe even birth certificate l.
I never think "oh, best-tardis-in-the-galaxy is a blog run by some gal named Sarah!". No, if I think of the name at all, it's like obscure trivia. My good friend Ms. Best-tardis-in-the-galaxy has the government name 'sarah'. Perhaps she hasn't been able to change it yet, too much paperwork or something?
I just sometimes see people post things like "what's your blog name mean?" and I'm like "it's me. What else would it be? You mean kirk's-big-saggy-tits isn't your name?"
Basically it's something like Facebook's real name policy but from the other angle. I think everyone is named what their username is, not vice versa.
(and yes, my name is foone. My mom calls me that and it's what's on my license. Isn't that true for everyone?)

whether the internet becomes an intolerable surveillance state, ubiquitous subscription model, or unusably ad- or AI-ridden shithole, I think we need to remember
how to do things offline
either on your personal hard drive (just because it’s an app doesn’t mean the information is stored in your device) or on paper. I’m not saying the collapse of the internet is imminent, and I’m not suggesting we do everything completely without technology, or even stop using it until we have to. (to be clear, I also don’t think the internet will just blink out of existence, suddenly stop being a thing at all; rather I think it might continue to lose its usefulness to the point where it’s impossible to get anything done. anyway) but some people may have forgotten how we got by before the internet (I almost have!), and the younger generation might not have experienced it at all.
I figure most people probably use the internet mainly for communication with friends and family, entertainment and creation (eg. writing), and looking up how to do things, so here’s how to do those things offline:
First and most importantly, download everything important to you onto at least one hard drive and at least one flashdrive! files can get corrupted and hardware can get damaged or lost, but as long as you keep backup copies, you have much-closer-to-guaranteed access versus hoping a business doesn’t decide to paywall, purge, or otherwise revoke your access. I would recommend getting irreplaceable photos printed as well
download and/or print/write down:
anything important to you - photos/videos, journals, certificates, college transcripts
contact info - phone numbers and/or addresses of friends/family (know how to contact them if you can’t use your favourite messaging app), doctors (open hours would be good too), veterinarians if you have pets, and work
how-to’s - recipes (one, two), emergency preparedness (what do I do if… eg. I smell gas)
other things you might google: cleaning chemicals to NOT mix, what laundry tag symbols mean, people food dogs and cats can and can’t eat, plant toxicity to pets
and know offline ways to find things out - local radio station, newspaper, a nearby highway rest area might have a region map, public libraries usually have a bunch of resources
also, those of you who get periods should strongly consider not using period tracking apps! here’s how to track your period manually
free printable period tracker templates (no printer? public libraries usually charge a few cents per page, or you can recreate it by hand)
moving on to entertainment, you can still get most media for free! it’s completely legal to download your favourite movies to your own personal hard drive, you just can’t sell or distribute copies (not legal advice)
movies: wcostream.tv (right click the player) - the url changes every once in a while but usually redirects; I recently noticed that it’s hiding a lot of movies behind “premium,” so it may or may not work anymore | download youtube videos
music: how to get music without streaming it | legal free downloads
games: steamunlocked.net - doesn’t have every game and can be slow to update, but very reliable
books: free online libraries | legal free downloads
otherwise passing time:
active outdoor games
for road trips (social verbal games)
for when power’s out
for sheltering in place (not all offline, but good ideas)
board games (often found at thrift stores)
ad-free customisable games collection (mobile)
read, write, draw, or whatever your craft is, sing, dance, clean, reorganise, take a bath
go outside - excuses include napping (if safe), eating, reading, finding cool plants/animals/rocks, playing with the dog
places to go include:
zoos and museums can be surprisingly cheap
parks and nature preserves
library, mall, or game shop
and a few miscellaneous things for good measure:
time budgeting | household management
how to use a planner | I’ve had success with visually blocked-out schedules like these
please add on if you have any other offline alternatives to common uses of the internet!

I do not actually use tiktok but I do scroll through instagram reels (which are just reposted tiktoks) way too much for my own health, and I also occasionally use reddit, and I can't help but think that these platforms and the emphasis on building your "brand" or finding your niche are pushing people to attach way too much meaning to labels. "Can I like flowers as a butch" "you shouldn't wear yellow as a deep autumn" "what my sensory-seeking child ate today" "when you Find Your Style and realise your teenage outfits were hideous" STOP. People don't work like that.
There's two angles to this, I think: It's always really obvious when somebody found an audience by posting about a specific thing and now they're trying to retain that audience by talking about it as much as possible, so they end up relating every aspect of their lives to it even when it makes no sense if only so they can use the right hashtags; whereas on the other end of this interaction, people who mostly receive this kind of content get the impression that there are rigid and hard rules that dictate who gets to identify a certain way or engage in an activity or what a health condition looks like. Have you ever noticed how many shortform videos but also internet comments begin with a version of "As someone who..." as if it's some kind of certificate or qualification? There is such an emphasis on labelling and clearly defining your experience! And don't get me wrong, labels and diagnoses and community identification can be really useful, and there are conversations in which being upfront about your positionality is helpful and productive. But so many posts on the lesbian subreddit the app made me join when I made my account are along the lines of "can I still be a lesbian if x?" and "do femmes think y is attractive?" as if any of these things are monolithic, strictly defined fundamental conditions of the human soul! Even medical conditions don't work this way because every body is different! Open yourself up to the complexity of experience!

Have you done any Jealous Dick or Jason, like they are yet to date the reader, or someone is hitting on their girl. (if you do female readers, otherwise GN works. Just as a girl, I think girl for gender for when I read things)
or what about fake dating trope?
Or they got drunk while on a mission in Vagas and end up married and don't find out until the marriage certificate comes in the mail. (you could do this twice, one where the boys have a crush on the reader or it is done enemies to lovers style)
Tumblr media
doing the second one because it's ICONIC.
dick x fem reader.
i dont know what a marriage certificate looks like btw
Tumblr media
Las Vegas was iconic. The bright city lights, the drinking, the partying... etc. Everything about Vegas was amazing. I mean, you would definitely remember, right?
Wrong. You and Dick had gone to Vegas undercover. You remember arriving at a hotel, and then, after that, you couldn't recall anything.
Neither could Dick. But he did remember a sound. It was like a loud and obnoxious bell, he described.
Currently, you and Dick sat in the living room of his apartment, trying to recall all the events that you two had forgotten about.
"So there were loud noises, right?" Dick asked. "Duh! It's Vagas. Everything is loud, Dick!" He rolled his eyes.
"Wait, so, we were supposed to just get intel on this man named "Joe Johnson," right? How'd we fuck that up?" You buried your head in your hands.
Dick sighed. "You know what? We need to go to bed. I'll drop you off at your place, 'k?" You nodded, knowing he was right. The fucker was always right.
Tumblr media
"Thanks, Dick," you said. He wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into a comforting hug. "Stay safe, alright?" He pulled away and watched as you entered your apartment building.
He couldn't help but grin as he opened his car door and drove away. Dick couldn't recall every little detail that happened a few weeks ago, but he knew that something between you and him happened. And he was Dick Grayson; he knew everything.
Tumblr media
You tossed and turned in your bed before reaching for your phone on the bedside table. You turned it on, only to be greeted with dozens of texts, cryptic emails, and missed calls. You gasped.
You immediately called him back, and you weren't even surprised when he answered on the spot.
"Where are you?" He asked through the phone.
"Home. What's wrong? What happened, Dick? The emails you left me... The texts," you explained.
You could hear him frowning. "Just come over, okay? It's easier to explain in person." You sighed. "Fine, I'll be there in twenty," you said before ending the call.
Tumblr media
You knocked on the door of Dick's apartment. He opened the door, noticing that you were soaked.
He quickly forced you inside. "Sit, fuck."
He wrapped his jacket around you and poured you some hot coffee. "Are you alright?" Dick asked. His cheeks were red, but his eyes were filled with genuine worry.
"I'm great," you replied, giving him a reassuring tap on the shoulder. "Anyway, what's up? You called me several different times."
He sighed. "Give me a minute," he said before getting up and leaving you alone in his living room.
A couple of minutes passed before he entered the living room again. But this time, he had something with him. It was an envelope.
"Open it. See for yourself," said Dick in a tired voice.
You took it from him and opened it. There was a piece of paper. You skimmed over it, seeing your name, then his, then the word "marriage."
You gasped. You had legally married Dick Grayson and had no memory of it. "Dick, what else?" you asked as you re-read the piece of paper over and over, hoping for something new to appear.
"I searched the internet. I even asked Oracle and Batman for help," he sighed. "I saw CCTV footage of us walking into a church, and a few hours later, we exited together. It's easier to show."
He took your hand and led you into his "area of operations," aka his computer, tucked in a tight corner.
Dick turned it on and dug into a few files before he started showing you masses of footage and pictures. He had managed to wipe them off the internet, because if anyone (with bad intentions) found out, the two of them would be in danger.
But obviously, he kept a secret file.
By the time you had skimmed through the footage, your lips had parted away from the frown. You sighed and looked at Dick. "This is such a shock," you finally managed to mutter.
"I know," he said, looking deeply into your eyes; it felt like he could see your soul. "Dick," you muttered. He nodded, motioning for you to continue. "I'm so scared but confused and nervous. I don't know what I'm doing. I don't know how to feel." You sighed.
"This is all shocking." A tear slid down your cheek. Dick's thumb reached out, wiping it away. "Pretty girls shouldn't cry," he whispered softly. He leaned in and lifted your chin.
"I'm pretty?" You questioned. "You're the prettiest woman, love."
Within a blink of an eye, his lips found their way onto yours. He didn't care that you were still wet from the rain. He enjoyed your company.
His hands were tangled in your hair.
The two of you shared a passionate kiss before pulling away. "I've had a crush on you for a while now," he blurted out, his cheeks red. Dick was clearly trying to avoid your gaze.
"I mean, you're pretty... cute yourself."
"Just cute?" Dick questioned, tilting his head.
"Maybe more than that."
Tumblr media
WILD. dick is the only man that'll ask you to come over and then say "give me a minute" by the time you're in his living room

Been thinking back on the early books where Crowly would just not even play coy about holding Yuu's vulnerable status in TWST over their head to do things, he's only stopped in recent books because after Jamil's overblot, Yuu's stopped going to him for things/Yuu gets involved in stuff anyways but like, imagine Ortho or any of the boys with real Means hearing Crowly do the whole "Oh I'd hate to see you on the streets, Prefect" shit and just going "not if I have anything to say about it".
STYX probably has some sort of deal with other countries for Nationality if people born there like Idia ever need ID, so i could see the Shroud brothers just asking Mum and Dad to make their buddy a fake ID so they can get a job.
Or just Kalim or Vil using their wealth to simply pay for Yuu to get all the paperwork they need and then some if Crowly continues to be skeezy about it. (And its because its me and you, Ace debating whether or not to cheekily slip a marriage certificate in with all the paperwork, if only briefly).
Azul and the Tweels Girlbossing and Gaslighting that Yuu is actually from the Coral Sea and their paperworks just been lost in the exchange program, how dare customs lose something that important! All four of them deserve compensation for the damage!
But who needs all that when Malleus just bold face says that by Divine Right he declared Yuu a sovereign citizen of Briar Valley. Whose gonna fight him in this? Just.. the boys in general making sure Yuu is OK
Ortho offers to give you any secret you want off the internet for your birthday so I definitely see the S.T.Y.X. people coming in clutch for the paperwork. It makes the most sense to me because when I read Book 6 I felt like the implication was Grim was going to be kept there past when the OB boys were returned due to him being seen as a danger, so if Grim is a matter of interest to S.T.Y.X. then Yuu probably will be too eventually. Paperwork shmaperwork they'll have ids made up for Yuu lickty split.
Malleus is another good option, but there is that pesky senate to deal with... I wonder if we will ever get an explanation of how Sebek's dad immigrated there? Could Malleus claim that he's technically doubled the human population by making Yuu a citizen because Mr. Zigvolt is the only one there for now?
and just because it's between you, me, and hundreds of our closest aceyuu friends and family, maybe yuu jokes that if they just got married then they'd have some paperwork and ace makes a great big show of "taking one for the team" even though we both know he'd really like that actually. And so would you otherwise you wouldn't be joking about it.

We’re aware that some people in the Philippines are having trouble accessing Tumblr or images on Tumblr. We’ve reached out to the affected ISPs and their government regulatory agency, which is all we can do for something like this. While we can’t remove or circumvent any blocks placed on Tumblr by an internet service provider or a government agency, we are monitoring the situation and hope that it is resolved soon.
🌱 Upcoming
We’re working on a lot of things for communities! Up next are the ability to ban members permanently, which will allow us to open up the option to make communities free-to-join, no invite required. More discovery options and feed improvements to come along with that.
Experiencing an issue? Check for Known Issues and file a Support Request if you have something new. We’ll get back to you as soon as we can!
