Very cool cross-cultural dress I came across on Google: Uber Dandy Kimono's red samakaka yukata
I'd never heard of samakaka print before seeing this online. According to Continent Clothing: "a Samakaka is a fabric or clothing with symbols typically from the Mumuila tribe." and on the Uber Dandy Kimono website it is described as a "tribal Angolan (samakaka) print".
Lately I've found cross-cultural kimono and yukata super interesting, and it feels like its very easy to mix any cultural or popular design into a kimono because there's no requirement for specific colors or patterns.

Naming International POC Characters: Do Your Research.
This post is part of a double feature for the same ask. First check out Mod Colette's answer to OP's original question at: A Careful Balance: Portraying a Black Character's Relationship with their Hair. Below are notes on character naming from Mod Rina.
~ ~ ~
@writingraccoon said:
My character is black in a dungeons and dragons-like fantasy world. His name is Kazuki Haile (pronounced hay-lee), and his mother is this world's equivalent of Japanese, which is where his first name is from, while his father is this world's equivalent of Ethiopian, which is where his last name is from. He looks much more like his father, and has hair type 4a. [...]
Hold on a sec.
Haile (pronounced hay-lee), [...] [H]is father is this world’s equivalent of Ethiopian, which is where his last name is from.
OP, where did you get this name? Behindthename.com, perhaps?
Note how it says, “Submitted names are contributed by users of this website. Check marks indicate the level to which a name has been verified.” Do you see any check marks, OP?
What language is this, by the way? If we only count official languages, Ethiopia has 5: Afar, Amharic, Oromo, Somali, & Tigrinya. If we count everything native to that region? Over 90 languages. And I haven't even mentioned the dormant/extinct ones. Do you know which language this name comes from? Have you determined Kazuki’s father’s ethnic group, religion, and language(s)? Do you know just how ethnically diverse Ethiopia is?
~ ~ ~
To All Looking for Character Names on the Internet:
Skip the name aggregators and baby name lists. They often do not cite their sources, even if they’re pulling from credible ones, and often copy each other.
If you still wish to use a name website, find a second source that isn’t a name website.
Find at least one real life individual, living or dead, who has this given name or surname. Try Wikipedia’s lists of notable individuals under "List of [ethnicity] people." You can even try searching Facebook! Pay attention to when these people were born for chronological accuracy/believability.
Make sure you know the language the name comes from, and the ethnicity/culture/religion it’s associated with.
Make sure you understand the naming practices of that culture—how many names, where they come from, name order, and other conventions.
Make sure you have the correct pronunciation of the name. Don’t always trust Wikipedia or American pronunciation guides on Youtube. Try to find a native speaker or language lesson source, or review the phonology & orthography and parse out the string one phoneme at a time.
Suggestions for web sources:
Wikipedia! Look for: “List of [language] [masculine/feminine] given names,” “List of most common [language] family names,” “List of most common surnames in [continent],” and "List of [ethnicity] people."
Census data! Harder to find due to language barriers & what governments make public, but these can really nail period accuracy. This may sound obvious, but look at the year of the character's birth, not the year your story takes place.
Forums and Reddit. No really. Multicultural couples and expats will often ask around for what to name their children. There’s also r/namenerds, where so many folks have shared names in their language that they now have “International Name Threads.” These are all great first-hand sources for name connotations—what’s trendy vs. old-fashioned, preppy vs. nerdy, or classic vs. overused vs. obscure.
~ ~ ~
Luckily for OP, I got very curious and did some research. More on Ethiopian & Eritrean naming, plus mixed/intercultural naming and my recommendations for this character, under the cut. It's really interesting, I promise!
Ethiopian and Eritrean Naming Practices
Haile (IPA: /həjlə/ roughly “hy-luh.” Both a & e are /ə/, a central “uh” sound) is a phrase meaning “power of” in Ge’ez, sometimes known as Classical Ethiopic, which is an extinct/dormant Semitic language that is now used as a liturgical language in Ethiopian churches (think of how Latin & Sanskrit are used today). So it's a religious name, and was likely popularized by the regnal name of the last emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie (“Power of the Trinity”). Ironically, for these reasons it is about as nationalistically “Ethiopian” as a name can get.
Haile is one of the most common “surnames” ever in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Why was that in quotes? Because Ethiopians and Eritreans don’t have surnames. Historically, when they needed to distinguish themselves from others with the same given name, they affixed their father’s given name, and then sometimes their grandfather’s. In modern Ethiopia and Eritrea, their given name is followed by a parent’s (usually father’s) name. First-generation diaspora abroad may solidify this name into a legal “surname” which is then consistently passed down to subsequent generations.
Intercultural Marriages and Naming
This means that Kazuki’s parents will have to figure out if there will be a “surname” going forward, and who it applies to. Your easiest and most likely option is that Kazuki’s dad would have chosen to make his second name (Kazuki’s grandpa’s name) the legal “surname.” The mom would have taken this name upon marriage, and Kazuki would inherit it also. Either moving abroad or the circumstances of the intercultural marriage would have motivated this. Thus “Haile” would be grandpa’s name, and Kazuki wouldn’t be taking his “surname” from his dad. This prevents the mom & Kazuki from having different “surnames.” But you will have to understand and explain where the names came from and the decisions dad made to get there. Otherwise, this will ring culturally hollow and indicate a lack of research.
Typically intercultural parents try to
come up with a first name that is pronounceable in both languages,
go with a name that is the dominant language of where they live, or
compromise and pick one parent’s language, depending on the circumstances.
Option 1 and possibly 3 requires figuring out which language is the father’s first language. Unfortunately, because of the aforementioned national ubiquity of Haile, you will have to start from scratch here and figure out his ethnic group, religion (most are Ethiopian Orthodox and some Sunni Muslim), and language(s).
But then again, writing these characters knowledgeably and respectfully also requires figuring out that information anyway.
~ ~ ~
Names and naming practices are so, so diverse. Do research into the culture and language before picking a name, and never go with only one source.

2. Synchronicity Can Happen at Almost Any Time
A few years ago, a few years after the first publication in America of The Word For World Is Forest, I had the great pleasure of meeting Dr Charles Tart, a psychologist well known for his researches into and his book on Altered States of Consciousness. He asked me if I had modelled the Athsheans of the story upon the Senoi people of Malaysia. The who? said I, so he told me about them. The Senoi are, or were, a people whose culture includes and is indeed substantially based upon a deliberate training in and use of the dream. Dr Tart's book includes a brief article on them by Kilton Steward.
Breakfast in the Senoi house is like a dream clinic, with the father and older brothers listening to and analysing the dreams of the children...
When the Senoi child reports a falling dream, the adult answers with enthusiasm, 'That is a wonderful dream, one of the best dreams a man can have. Where did you fall to, and what did you discover?'
The Senoi dream is meaningful, active, and creative. Adults deliberately go into their dreams to solve problems of interpersonal and intercultural conflict. They come out of their dreams with a new song, tool, dance, idea. The waking and the dreaming states are equally valid, each acting upon the other in complementary fashion.
The article implies, by omission rather than by direct statement, that the men are the 'great dreamers' among the Senoi; whether this means that the women are socially inferior, or that their role (as among the Athsheans) is equal and compensatory, is not clear. Nor is there any mention of the Senoi conception of divinity, the numinous, etc.; it is merely stated that they do not practice magic, though they are perfectly willing to let neighbouring peoples think they do, as this discourages invasion.
They have built a system of inter-personal relations which, in the field of psychology, is perhaps on a level with our attainments in such areas as television and nuclear physics.
It appears that the Senoi have not had a war, or a murder, for several hundred years.
There they are, twelve thousand of them, farming, hunting, fishing, and dreaming, in the rain forests of the mountains of Malaysia. Or there they were, in 1935 - perhaps. Kilton Stewart's report on them has had no professional sequels that I know of. Were they ever there, and if so, are they still there? In the waking time, I mean, in what we so fantastically call 'the real world'. In the dream time, of course, they are there, and here.
I thought I was inventing my own lot of imaginary aliens, and I was only describing the Senoi. It is not only the Captain Davidsons who can be found in the unconscious, if one looks. The quiet people who do not kill each other are there, too. It seems that a great deal is there, the things that we most fear (and therefore deny), the things that we most need (and therefore deny). I wonder, couldn't we start listening to our dreams, and our children's dreams?
'Where did you fall to, and what did you discover?'

Western Fashion's Effect on Indian Culture
Numerous social and cultural developments, including modernism, technological growth, and creative movements, have an impact on fashion and lifestyle trends in today's society and culture. Examples of this include technological advancement, modernization, and artistic movements. Their activities have had far-reaching effects on the rest of the world as a result of the events. Fashion is modeled after consumer lives and cultural contexts, according to a paradigm for fashion study and interpretation that takes into account the interplay of changes in fashion, changes in consumer lifestyles, and changes in cultural surroundings. The rest of this definition makes use of the interactionist paradigm. Because it places a strong focus on interpersonal contact, it is also known as the interactionist model or interactionist framework.
The philosopher asserted that the only thing that remains constant in the universe is change, calling it "the only thing that is constant." He declared, "Change is the only thing that is constant." In other words, fashion is nothing more than a passing craze that is meant to be transient and is always changing and appearing. Throughout history, creative minds have made their mark on the fashion industry by employing a range of unique and inventive methods. Regardless of the activity they are involved in, everyone wants to always feel and look their best. This is true regardless of their career. This holds true regardless of their experience in the workplace. Regardless of their prior employment history, this is accurate. Whether or not they have previous work experience, this is still true.
One of the oldest and most prosperous civilizations in the world, Indian culture is said to be seriously threatened by the current condition of affairs and may not survive in the future. The UN claims that the world would be in severe danger if Indian culture, which has endured for thousands of years, disappeared. Despite the fact that Indian culture is under threat in various ways, one of the biggest is the development of Western civilization, which is gradually taking over the country and destroying the customs of its indigenous peoples. Everyone acknowledges that western culture is flexible and has instilled in us the value of independence in our daily lives, However, this does not mean that we should abandon our customs and slavishly adhere to the legal systems of other people. Others contend that our long-standing practice of accepting novel concepts from other nations shouldn't be interpreted as a warning sign that we could soon lose our moral convictions. India has seen changes in its design patterns over time due to a multitude of factors, including the country's historical Islamic conquest, western colonization, and influx of international traders.
Western fashion's effects on Indian culture:-
As was previously mentioned, India is a melting pot of cultural diversity, which has made Indians hospitable to individuals from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. Multiple ethnic groups cohabit regularly in a nation, and each group learns about the customs and languages of the others. Intercultural learning, to put it simply, is the process by which people become aware of one another's languages and cultures. It is a long-observed occurrence that bears the following definition: Every ethnic group has its own distinct style when it comes to attire, therefore for those who are unaware with it, meeting someone from a different ethnic group for the first time can be a fascinating experience. The fashion industry in India inspires women to choose more creative and daring looks for themselves. Indian fashion designers have achieved the highest degrees of inventiveness and international recognition in recent years due to their ability to blend several styles into their designs. It has allowed them to gain recognition on a global scale.
Western-style fashion is gaining popularity among consumers of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds, and it's one of the retail company sectors that is expanding the fastest in the last few years. In addition, it is among the least expensive choices on the market. History reveals that the American Old West region, which emerged in the seventeenth century, is where traditional western clothing originated. The foundation of this brand, which is available for online purchase by both men and women, is made-to-order basics like t-shirts, jeans, and jackets. Due to the company's expansion and the enormous increase in diversity that has taken place since its founding, clients may now choose from a wide range of commodities and fashion trends. Over time, the notion of western clothes has expanded to include a diverse array of goods, including but not limited to casual t-shirts, pants, dresses, skirts, and suits. Western attire comprises of things such as dresses, skirts, suits, pants, and casual tee shirts. The category of western clothes encompasses things such as dresses, skirts, suits, pants, and casual t-shirts. The following clothing items are included in the category of western apparel: dresses, skirts, suits, pants, and casual tee shirts. "Western wear" is another term for apparel from the West. Traditionally, western attire has been associated with items such as dresses, skirts, suits, pants, and casual tee shirts. People of different ethnic backgrounds and origins find comfort, durability, and variety in clothing that appeals to them.
For a very long time, customers in India did not anticipate women working physically because it was not seen as normal. This has, however, lately altered. But things are starting to change here. But things have shifted a lot in the last few years. If you look closely at the pictures, you'll notice that the women's traditional Indian attire was completely unfit for someone participating in a physically demanding exercise. It is therefore more difficult for women to move freely within the culture in which they live when they wear in traditional attire. A woman's body is covered in a long length of cloth, called a saree, from her waist to her toes. As was already said, because the legs are not completely straight, their range of motion is limited. This causes it to feel uncomfortable when it comes into contact with surrounding female body parts.
Additionally, moving huge articles of clothes, such as sarees and lehengas, from one area to another may be time-consuming and difficult. Unless the labor is of a specific kind, there are no hard and fast rules to follow, and even then, the criteria may vary depending on how heavy the garments are, to begin with. Weight-wise, bridal lehengas are much more severe than regular lehengas and saris, both popular choices for Indian brides.
Conversely, women feel far more at ease in western apparel, such as jeans, perhaps because of the way they are made. These clothes are significantly more comfortable than traditional Indian clothing. The loose fit of western clothing facilitates women's respiration and movement, enabling them to be more active in daily life.
CONCLUSION:-
Since more and more Indian females start dressing largely in Western clothing, it is expected that this trend would continue. The variety of clothing styles is increasing, and they can be seen in anything from shirts and pants to T-shirts and skirt sets and other similar-looking products. People can choose from a comprehensive collection of costumes in a wide range of color options to suit their specific likes and hobbies. Wearing western attire gives you a more polished and appealing appearance while you are out and about in public. Sadly, there is no escaping this fact of reality.
Just as Western attire might be lovely in some circumstances, ethnic dress can also be magnificent in others. Though it may be attractive in some scenarios. Consumers may frequently dress in formal and casual settings with stylish, classic apparel. It fits in with both settings and events. Women can choose from a variety of ethnic clothing options, including sarees, salwar kameez, lehengas, churidars, and other styles that can be customized to complement their entire appearance, if they prefer a more traditional look. Muslim women in southern India have historically worn salwar kameez, while Hindu ladies in northern India have traditionally worn sarees.
To go with your ensembles, you may also buy saree fabrics in a variety of colors and patterns. There are saris made of georgette, chiffon, and cotton and silk, among other materials. Bridal lehengas and shararas are beautiful garments worn for formal occasions like weddings and other social gatherings in many cultures, including Indian culture. This is especially true for Indian women who are getting married. No matter where it originates, clothing has a distinct style, whether it is western or ethnic. On the other hand, some women believe that dressing in ethnic attire makes them more comfortable than dressing in western attire.
Conversely, some claim. They feel more at ease dressed in Western apparel than in traditional attire. In this instance, it would be ridiculous to try to persuade someone that one is better than the other. Though most of the time an individual's attire is determined by the event to which they have been invited, this is not always the case. For instance, what to wear to a wedding depends on the color of the gown. Nonetheless, the average member of our society finds it impossible to understand the history and customs of our nation when viewed through the prism of western attire and culture.

Challenges of Misunderstanding and Stereotypes
Islam often grapples with misconceptions and stereotypes in a rapidly changing world. Addressing these misunderstandings and fostering intercultural dialogue becomes imperative in promoting mutual understanding and harmony.
In such times it’s vital we forgo concluding quick conclusions, fuelled by today’s appetite for quick content, and instead really look in depth, having deep discussions with others and foster an environment of curiosity and conversation.
Quran (49:6) — “O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.”

For my blog project, I have chosen to study Japanese culture. I selected Japan because of its rich history, unique traditions, and significant global influence. The balance between modernity and tradition in Japan is captivating, and I believe an in-depth exploration will provide valuable insights. Additionally, Japan’s impact on global technology, cuisine, and pop culture makes it a compelling subject.
Impact of the "Deep Dive" Experience
This in-depth exploration of Japanese culture will enhance my intercultural communication skills and cultural sensitivity. Understanding Japanese customs, values, and social norms will improve my interactions not only with Japanese individuals but also with people from other cultures. This experience will broaden my perspective, helping me to appreciate and respect cultural differences more deeply.
Preliminary Research on Japanese Culture
Features of Japanese Culture
Food: Japanese cuisine emphasizes seasonal ingredients, presentation, and balance of flavors. Staples include sushi, ramen, tempura, and miso soup. "Washoku," traditional Japanese food, is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Holidays: Japan celebrates a mix of traditional and modern holidays. Significant holidays include New Year’s Day (Shogatsu), Cherry Blossom Festival (Hanami), and Obon, a festival to honor ancestors. Modern holidays like Golden Week and Children’s Day are also important.
Music: Japanese music ranges from traditional genres like "gagaku" (imperial court music) and "enka" (sentimental ballads) to contemporary J-pop and rock. Karaoke is a popular pastime, reflecting the cultural importance of music.
Clothing: Traditional clothing such as kimonos and yukatas are worn on special occasions. Modern fashion in Japan is diverse, with a strong presence of street fashion and high-end designer brands.
Other Elements: Japanese culture places a high value on respect, humility, and harmony. Practices like bowing, exchanging business cards, and meticulous attention to etiquette are integral to social interactions.
Perspective in Studying Other Cultures
The statement, “In studying other cultures, we do so very often from the perspective of our own culture,” highlights the inherent bias we bring to our analysis. Our cultural lens influences our interpretations and judgments about other cultures. To ensure the accuracy and unbiased nature of the information collected, I will:
Engage with Primary Sources: Use sources directly from the culture, such as Japanese authors, scholars, and cultural artifacts.
Seek Diverse Perspectives: Include viewpoints from different segments of Japanese society to avoid a single-story narrative.
Cross-reference Information: Verify facts with multiple reliable sources to ensure accuracy.
Cultural Immersion: Where possible, engage with the culture through experiences like language learning, participating in cultural events, or interacting with Japanese people.

Navigating the Tapestry: Cultural Influences in Fashion Videos
In the kaleidoscopic world of fashion, the threads of cultural heritage weave through the fabric of contemporary design, creating patterns rich with meaning and diversity. The advent of fashion videos as a primary medium for showcasing design has brought these cultural narratives to the forefront, offering a dynamic platform for exploration, appreciation, and dialogue. As visual storytelling becomes increasingly integral to fashion's expression, understanding the impact of cultural influences on fashion videos reveals not only the aesthetic but also the societal value embedded within these creative endeavors.
Fashion videos serve as a vibrant canvas for the display of cultural influences, blending visual artistry with the depth of traditional heritage. These videos, ranging from high-budget cinematic productions to more personal vlog-style presentations, provide a unique opportunity to explore the nuances of cultural identity through fashion. They highlight the creative synthesis of traditional elements with modern sensibilities, offering viewers a glimpse into the myriad ways that cultural heritage can inform and inspire contemporary design.
Central to this visual narrative is the designer's role as both storyteller and cultural ambassador. By drawing on their own heritage or exploring the traditions of other cultures, designers use fashion videos to communicate complex cultural stories. These narratives often incorporate traditional motifs, colors, textiles, and craftsmanship techniques, reimagined within the context of contemporary fashion. For instance, a designer may integrate the intricate patterns of Indigenous American beadwork into a modern silhouette, creating a piece that honors traditional art forms while appealing to contemporary tastes. Through fashion videos, the significance of these cultural elements is highlighted, offering insights into the craftsmanship, history, and cultural values they represent.
The global reach of fashion videos amplifies their impact, allowing for a cross-cultural exchange that enriches the fashion industry and its audience. This exchange is not just one-way; it involves a dialogue between cultures, where inspiration is drawn and reinterpreted across borders. Fashion videos document this intercultural conversation, showcasing how diverse influences can merge to create innovative designs. They reflect a world where the lines between cultures blur, giving rise to a global fashion landscape that celebrates diversity and fosters mutual appreciation.
However, with the power to influence perceptions of culture comes a significant responsibility. The conversation around cultural appropriation versus appreciation is ever-present in the discourse on cultural influences in fashion. Fashion videos must navigate this delicate balance, ensuring that cultural elements are represented with respect, understanding, and authenticity. By engaging with cultural consultants, involving creators from the cultures being represented, and providing context about the cultural elements featured, fashion videos can become platforms for respectful cultural exchange and education.
Moreover, fashion videos offer a lens through which to view the evolution of cultural influences in fashion over time. They document the shifts in how cultural elements are interpreted and integrated into fashion, reflecting broader societal changes in attitudes towards diversity and inclusion. As historical archives, these videos can serve as valuable resources for understanding the progression of cultural influences in fashion, highlighting moments of breakthrough, controversy, and evolution.
The influence of culture on fashion extends beyond aesthetic considerations, touching on deeper questions of identity, heritage, and globalization. Fashion videos that successfully capture the essence of cultural influences do more than just showcase beautiful garments; they invite viewers to reflect on their own cultural identities and the interconnectedness of our global community. They can challenge stereotypes, broaden perspectives, and inspire a more inclusive and thoughtful approach to fashion.
In conclusion, cultural influences in fashion videos represent a powerful fusion of art, heritage, and storytelling. These visual narratives offer a window into the diverse cultural landscapes that shape our world, encouraging exploration, appreciation, and understanding. As the fashion industry continues to evolve, the role of fashion videos in celebrating and critically examining cultural influences will undoubtedly remain vital. Through thoughtful representation and creative expression, fashion videos have the potential to not just reflect but also enrich our cultural tapestry, making the world of fashion a more inclusive, diverse, and fascinating realm.
