Dorinish island clew bay ireland

Dorinish island clew bay ireland free#
On the menu is a zingy Chorizo with Aran Islands Feta and rocket, local Andarl Farm free range pork and fresh and smoked Atlantic haddock. This is a perfect place to enjoy local food cooked to perfection by Dermott, with Janice overseeing the warm front of house service. THE PANTRY AND CORKSCREW ¬ is quirky little restaurant with walls packed with old pictures and artefacts is run by husband and wife team Dermott Flynn and Janice O’Rourke. Lovely atmosphere, great little nooks and crannies and warm and friendly service. Try the whole langoustines with garlic or pan roasted hake. With head chef Anthony Printer in the kitchen and the freshest of seafood on the plate, you can’t go wrong. This gorgeous old seafood restaurant and bar commands a wonderful view of the sea. Visit .ĬRONIN’S SHEEBEEN Lunch at Cronin’s Sheebeen is a must. Even if Westport wasn’t as beautiful as it is, I would head there just to have a perfect evening at An Port Mór – yes, it is that good. We feasted on delicate black sole, turbot on the bone with lobster sauce and seasonal stuffed courgette flowers.Īnother classic staple are delicate scallops with beurre noisette with black pudding from Kelly’s butchers, Dublin bay prawns and fresh crab. Frankie keeps the menu interesting at his Michelin Plate restaurant but expect the freshest of seafood. It was our first stop and we were there to celebrate my mum, Mags Casey’s 91st birthday. Visit .ĪN PORT MÓR This is one of my favourite restaurants with the great talents of Frankie Mallon in the kitchen. The rooms are spacious, the food is great and the warmth of the service is exceptional. The Clew Bay is one of those family owned quintessentially Irish hotels where nothing is too much. And that is the real secret to a hotel’s success, and it is rarely to do with bricks and mortar regardless of how lovely the décor is. It’s a testament to these two great ambassadors for Westport and they have created a hotel that welcomes guests like long lost friends, while also minding their staff. That’s some achievement for a family run hotel in a town of just over 5,000 people. They had also refurbished the hotel and won a prestigious national award a few years ago from the Irish Hotels Federation, placing them alongside the likes of The Merrion and the Intercontinental as great employers. THE CLEW BAY HOTEL I was back for, by now, my annual return visit to The Clew Bay Hotel to catch up with owners Maria Ruddy and Darren Madden who were brave enough to stand aside for two weeks to let me takeover with the staff for that RTÉ show all those years ago. If a town had a heart it would be manifest in the passion and love so evident in the mouth-watering apple tarts atĬhristy’s Harvest where hours could slip by while chatting to complete strangers and listening to the good humoured banter from the man himself. Along with the beauty of the town there is a noticeable warmth about Westport people - always happy to chat in the lovely quaint Irish-owned shops. If you could capture that and mirror it in other small towns we might re-energise rural communities and give our young people a reason to stay. I filmed an episode of RTÉ’s The Takeover in Westport and fell into a deeper infatuation with the people, the history and the magic ingredients that makes it one of the most visited spots in Ireland. So many famous and infamous people have fallen for Westport’s charms but acclaimed 19th-century author William Thackeray’s love affair with Westport and Clew Bay is renowned “…the bay and the Reek, which sweeps down to the sea, and the hundred isles in it, were dressed up in gold and purple and crimson, with the whole cloudy west in a flame. If the pleasing prettiness of Westport isn’t enough to lure you, then the dramatic backdrop courtesy of mother nature makes this the best weekend retreat in Ireland (in my opinion!) The flowers by the way are specifically chosen to attract butterflies and bees. The pristine streets (it has won the Tidy Towns competition oodles of times), beautiful flowers, lovely old Georgian buildings flanking the Carrowbeg river and picturesque stone bridges greet you on arrival. It is unusual in that it is a planned town, and there aren’t many of them in Ireland, and it has heritage status. Well before I fell in love with far flung exotic destinations, I found myself heading to this picture perfect gem time and again.

OUR TOP 5 HOTELS ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA
1.    Le Negresco Nice.
The story started in 1912 when Henri Negresco the son of a Romanian innkeeper, after living in Paris and Monaco, decided to settle in Nice. He then decided to build a prestigious hotel to cater for wealthy clients. The architect he chose was none other than Edouard Niermans, one of the most celebrated architects of his time. The pink dome was also reportedly designed by Gustave Eiffel. In 1957 when Jeanne Augier took over the hotel, guests such as Dali, Princess Grace of Monaco, the Beatles, Louis Armstrong and Elton John enjoyed staying. Boasting an impressive collection of artwork and furniture spanning over 5 centuries, this iconic hotel continues to draw tourists and celebrities from all over the world. With 100 Guest rooms and 25 suites, each individually styled room offers a feast for your eyes! Talking of feasts, be sure to drop in to the hotel’s 1 Michelin starred restaurant the “Le Chantecler” to try their fabulous menu offering a tribute to regional produce. Unfortunately, when this was written, the Negresco is currently closed due to Covid 19. We look forward to them reopening soon.
2.    Hotel du Cap Eden Roc
This grandiose hotel started out as a private mansion built in 1869 by the founder of France’s “Le Figaro” newspaper, Jean Hippolyte Auguste Delaunay de Villemessant. Originally called Villa Soleil, Jean built the mansion for writers seeking inspiration. In 1887 Antoine Sella, an Italian hotelier bought the property and in 1889 it opened its doors as the Grande Hôtel Du Cap.Some notable guests over the years include, a junior John F Kennedy, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Winston Churchill, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
Situated on the southern tip of Cap d’Antibes, the hotel boasts 118 guest rooms and 2 villas set amongst a wonderful tranquil setting and a perfect place to unwind with a cocktail after a long day shopping or sight-seeing! We love the Eden Roc restaurant for lunch, with its stunning views towards Cannes and the Iles de Lérins.
3.    Intercontinental Carlton Cannes
This iconic hotel in in the centre of “Boulevard Le Croisette” in Cannes, is known throughout the world for its lavish parties and super high-profile guests. Built between 1909 and 1913 for Henry Rhul, a Swiss hotelier, its reputation has grown throughout the years for being the place to be, and be seen during the Cannes film festival. The hotels rich history doesn’t just evolve around glitzy parties and A – list celebs, it was also the location for the first ever league of nations conference in 1921. At the time of writing, the hotel is going through an extensive refurbishment, and we look forward to seeing the completed work in 2023. We are certain it will be above and beyond our expectations!
4.    Hôtel Cap-Estel Ezé
The best way to catch a glimpse of this amazing hotel is from a boat! Situated on a 2-hectare peninsular between Nice and Monaco, if you love looking out to sea, then this is the place for you! Surrounded on 3 sides by water, and set-in lush greenery, this boutique hotel is the perfect place to get away from the crowds and relax in private. The main building was built in 1899 and extensively renovated in 2003 and contains 2 presidential suites, the largest with over 445 m2 of floor space not including the ample terrace! Hungry? These guys have it covered, either a light and tasty poolside lunch at the super classy “fiscus” restaurant, or something at bit more gourmet at the 1 Michelin star “La table de Patrick Raingeard” where you will experience Patrick’s homage to produce gathered from the sea and the shore (and the hotel’s own garden)
 5.    Hôtel de Paris Montecarlo
Originally just olive and lemon trees, this space was magnificently developed by François Blanc into one of the world most luxurious hotels. Opening its doors in 1864, this hotel catered exclusively to the international elite, as it still does today. Rockefeller, Rothschild and Vanderbilt are just a few of the high-profile guest that have stayed here over the years. As well as welcoming kings, Queens and dignitaries from all over the world, the hotel has also feature in many movies including Iron Man 2, Madagascar 3 and as you would expect, 2 James bond films, Goldeneye and never say never again. 10 Best Romantic Restaurants in Hong Kong
New Post has been published on https://www.travelonlinetips.com/10-best-romantic-restaurants-in-hong-kong/
10 Best Romantic Restaurants in Hong Kong
Tumblr media
Hong Kong has a reputation for non-stop work, with breakfast snatched on the way to the office, lunch eaten at your desk, and dinner little more than a takeaway at the end of the day. So are there really any openings for a romantic dinner? The answer has to be a resounding yes.
First off is the city’s stunning location – set around Victoria Harbour, with skyscrapers towering on every side. Second is Hong Kong’s affection for not just Chinese food, but for cuisines from all around the world, to say nothing of a penchant for gourmet. And fine wines fill Hong Kong’s restaurant cellars.
So the end result is scores of romantic dining venues, which are all the more popular as Hong Kongers need a break from their hectic schedules from time to time. Many of the most romantic restaurants are in the city’s hotels, with Gaddi’s being a prime example. This is gourmet dining for the upper crust, totally formal and utterly memorable. For a little more informality, hit any of the four branches of Frites — fun food and fun times. And if it’s celebrity chefs you’re after, look no further than Nobu, possibly one of the most famous romantic dining names on the planet.
Tumblr media
Hutong’s stunning space is a clever play of faux rustic decor against the backdrop of uber-modern Hong Kong seen from floor to ceiling windows. Much of the food, traditional northern Chinese with a modern bent, may not appeal to meat-and-potatoes types. That said, there are still a few dishes that even the most Western of palates will appreciate, such as crispy de-boned lamb ribs, wok-fried beef tenderloin with scallions and pan-fried sole. Otherwise, expect to find unusual but wonderful dishes such as shark’s lips marinated with ginger and black fungi, stewed fish head, sea cucumber salad or poached frog legs with sponge cucumber. MTR: Tsim Sha Tsui.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: Hutong’s romantically inspired menu is just perfect for couples on a special date.
Ed’s expert tip: Book a private room if you want some extra exclusivity.

The Peninsula, aka The Pen, is the oldest hotel in Hong Kong. There may be newer, bigger, more spiffy hotels in the city, but this is the most venerable, and The Verandah is one of its principal restaurants and quite the most gracious place to dine intimately in Hong Kong. The buffet is like one vast path to temptation while the kitchen will cook anything that takes your fancy, from steak to fish and beyond. The staff are a delight, past masters at looking after their guests and getting their evening off to a grand start. Beautiful decor sets the seal on a great venue.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: The Verandah is stylish, airy and fun; what more could anyone want on a romantic date?
Ed’s expert tip: You’ll enjoy your meal more if you are smartly dressed, like all the other diners.

Look out over the harbor for some truly inspirational romantic dining. This 56th-floor restaurant is, perhaps, one of the true gems of the Hong Kong dining scene. The view of Hong Kong and Victoria Harbour from some of tables here is breath-taking, and often is complemented by live piano music in the background. The cuisine is contemporary French; the foie gras is a favorite. A lunch menu offers two- and three-course meals, while dinner is served; la carte, with an eight-course tasting meal available. The chef at Petrus uses only the freshest available meat and produce. Reservations are essential. MTR: Admiralty
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: Petrus doesn’t just deliver the goods, but does so with a delicious panache.
Ed’s expert tip: Leave room for the goat cheese, which is quite stupendous.

Internationally known chef Nobu Matsuhisa has acclaimed restaurants in world-class cities such as New York City, London, Las Vegas, Miami, Dallas, Milan and Tokyo. Add Hong Kong to the list! Opened at the end of 2006, this outpost is every bit as elegant, sleek and wonderful as its brothers and sisters, and the food is just as fabulous. Sushi and sashimi make up most of the menu, but there are several additional options as well, including steaks, tempura and a host of cooked Japanese dishes. Not to be missed! The restaurant’s location overlooking the harbor must make it one of the most amazing Nobus around the world.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: This restaurant is right next to the harbor, so the marine panoramas are unrivaled.
Ed’s expert tip: Book your table before you arrive in the city: it’s that popular.

French food is a natural choice for romantic diners, and there are few more opulent restaurants than this one. The well-regarded Caprice is lovely, with tastefully opulent decor and a wonderful view over Victoria Harbour. Chef Vincent Thierry’s forte is contemporary French cuisine and he imports a plethora of special ingredients to accomplish the best flavors and textures. The menu changes frequently, but expect to find dishes such as Artichoke Cappuccino with Black Truffle, Pan-Sauted Veal Chop with Green Asparagus and Jus of Black Truffle, and Roast Chicken with Fondant Potatoes. If you’re feeling decadent, splurge on the degustation menu. Impressive wine list.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: This is not just really superb dining, but value for money too.
Ed’s expert tip: Ask the sommelier to guide you through the extensive wine list.

Lively Belgian beer house Frites brings a taste of Europe to Hong Kong. On entering the bistro, customers see an authentic Belgian-style bar, stocked with four genuine Belgian beers on tap and many more available by the bottle. The menu contains traditional and unique Belgian fare, including mussels in Hoegaarden beer sauce, pork knuckle. and Stella Artois battered fish and chips. At this buzzing authentic Belgian bistro customers can’t help but feel part of the energy and excitement, even before your first beer of many is served. Three other branches of Frites do a roaring trade in Wanchai, Causeway Bay and Central.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: There’s a very lively air to Frites, one that’s inspiring and romantic at the same time.
Ed’s expert tip: This works best as a venue for a romantic evening meal as lunchtimes are busy with executives from the surrounding offices.

One of the Peninsuala Hotel’s many stars, Gaddi’s has been a fixture on the Hong Kong restaurant scene for more than 50 years, during which time it has enjoyed a fine reputation for terrific service, ambiance, and food. Expect to see an older, more established crowd here, enjoying a meal accompanied by light piano music in the background. Among its more popular dishes, the lobster bisque seems to rise above the rest, but the Scottish lamb is equally well prepared. Gaddi’s comes with a smart dress code, so it’s better to spruce up; reservations are highly recommended. MTR: Tsim Sha Tsui
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: This is one of the oldest restaurants in Hong Kong and there’s good reason why it’s lasted so long.
Ed’s expert tip: As well as superb food, Gaddi’s also features a superlative wine list.

Take one of the world’s finest cuisines, combine it with one of the world’s most stunning metropolitan views, and the result is Pierre. Perched on the 25th floor of the Mandarin Oriental hotel, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing Victoria Harbour, this restaurant is the personal handiwork of Pierre Gagnaire, a French gastronomic genius and recognized everywhere as a truly original and artistic chef. The dishes are both intricate and elaborate dishes, but always firmly rooted in the French cooking tradition. Chef Pierre makes regular visits here, and in his absence the kitchen is run by Jacky Tauvry, Chef de Cuisine at Pierre. There’s no better romantic dining venue.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: Put simply, the grilled salmon is perhaps the best in Asia, let alone Hong Kong.
Tracy You’s expert tip: Pierre’s open for both lunch and dinner, but in the evening the top-floor setting is at its most magical.

Never mind that Brit celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is the man behind London House, it’s the celebrity food that’s got everyone talking. Or rather, it would have, if they weren’t so busy chewing. This is the place for Brit pub classics like fish and chips and bangers (as the English call sausages) and mash, as well as a stunning range of puddings. London House is spread over two levels, with an outdoor dining terrace and big screens for all the sports action however it’s the laid-back atmosphere that makes it such a good dining venue. The staff, informed and friendly, deserve a minor round of applause too.
Recommended for Romantic Dining because: This breezy, merry restaurant is relaxed enough to make it ideal for a first date. Or a second or third.
Ed’s expert tip: Bag a table with a view of the harbor on the outdoor terrace.

The End of the Breakfast Buffet
Tumblr media
Getty Images
Due to COVID-19, the beloved self-serve travel perk is no more. Here’s what you can expect to wake up to instead
There’s a particular pleasure to the travel ritual of waking up in crisp hotel sheets, meandering downstairs, and finding a fully stocked breakfast buffet splayed out before you.
Then there’s the exploratory lap to inspect the offerings: everything from chafing dishes of scrambled eggs and pancakes to, depending where you are in the world, soup, porridge, sushi, farm cheese, flatbread, noodles, and always, always miniature boxes of Kellogg’s cereal. Grab the tongs and fill your plate with a scone, a sliver of cantaloupe, and a curl of mortadella; pile a bowl with a mess of something hot and grainy, and top it with a sprinkle of sweet, salty, fishy, or all of the above. Your travel day has just started, and yet here it is, already made.
But now the breakfast buffet is, with all certainty, a thing of the past. In the early days of COVID-19’s spread, a number of the larger hotel chains like MGM Resorts, Hilton, Marriott, Four Seasons, and InterContinental temporarily stopped food service — including breakfast — altogether. Now, as the lodging industry strives to find more long-term COVID-conscious solutions, the buffet seems to be first on the chopping block.
Because though a bountiful platter of muffins or an artfully arranged display of cold cuts are alluring, such communal food presentations are also the perfect setting for spreading viruses. A team of scientists in Japan recently put one buffet under an ultraviolet light to illustrate how easily a virus can spread across tongs, drink pitchers, food tray lids, silverware, and glasses. Basically, all of it.
And if hotels did bring back the breakfast buffet, would today’s guests — equipped with a new heightened awareness of hygiene — still even want them?
According to John Nicholls, a pathology professor at the University of Hong Kong, the problem is less about the buffet itself and — per usual — more about us, and our less-than-stellar handwashing, which can spread the virus across touch surfaces. “Buffets are potentially where lots of people crowd together with the sharing of utensils, potential transmission of fomites,” Nicholls says. “Hotels have liked buffets for economic reasons, but I can see why you might want to propose that the buffet has had its day.”
Instead of a lavish morning buffet spread, “guests now receive a breakfast bag.”
“The breakfast buffet will be a thing of the past,” agrees Claudio Scarpa, director of the hotel association for Venice, Italy. The group recently put together a 10-page document of regulations for area hotels, which include recommendations for everything from disinfecting, social distancing, and meals. Instead of a lavish morning buffet spread, “guests now receive a breakfast bag,” says Scarpa.
The American Hotel & Lodging Association has also jumped onboard with its own set of new regulations, as part of their industry-wide Safe Stay, enhancing health and safety protocols for reopening the economy. Dr. Richard Ghiselli, head of the School of Hospitality & Tourism Management at Purdue University, is part of the newly created Global Cleanliness Council with Marriott Hotels.
“Restaurant operators are advised to discontinue self-serve buffets and salad bars,” said Ghiselli, who notes that the buffet could possibly survive in a slightly altered form — with new guidelines. “Where they are permitted, they must have sneeze guards in place, and staff are advised to change, wash, and sanitize utensils frequently, and place barriers in open areas,” he said. And so much for lining up for those hash browns or hovering over a fellow guest as you wait for a toaster slot to open up. “Hotels also must place floor markings and signs to encourage social distancing,” he says.
The problem extends beyond hotels — earlier this month, buffet restaurant chains Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes both announced they’re closing all 97 locations for good. But the lodging industry is in a particular bind; ceasing food operations altogether isn’t really an option when hungry guests continue to check in. So how to safely keep them fed? Chains like Choice Hotels are replacing brunch with pre-packaged breakfast. Omni Hotel’s Safe and Clean initiative offers pre-plated meals only served with single-use cutlery, while Best Western’s We Care Clean plan offers a collection of so-called “Grab & Go” pre-plated food.
But these various riffs on the sack lunch won’t fly at more luxury resorts. The Hotel Monte-Carlo Bay in Monaco, then, has concocted a slightly more high-touch solution. “We have changed our way of serving our famous brunch, which will be served by our waiters, instead of going to the buffet,” said Frederic Darnet, the hotel’s general manager. He calls the new approach “Table Brunch” — how novel — where staff deliver dishes directly to guests tableside. And for those who want to avoid the restaurant altogether, they offer a Floating Breakfast package, an elaborate spin on the traditional French breakfast, served on a floating tray in the lagoon (for roughly $140). “I’m happy that we can adapt,” he adds.
The Four Seasons also hopes to phase out breakfast buffets with a slew of experiential concepts, including one most associated with sushi: the conveyor belt. “We are exploring many concepts, with a big focus on individualization,” says John Johnson, executive chef at the Four Seasons Hotel New York. “That includes individual miniature dishes, instead of traditional buffets, and movable feasts in small personal vessels that move along a touchless conveyor belt.”
Of course, there’s also the tried-and-true way of doing socially distanced hotel breakfast: room service. Many hotels will be beefing up their in-room menus and making them all available online. And instead of a server knocking on your door, rolling in a cart, and arranging the tiny jams and silverware, more and more hotels are turning to contactless drop offs and disposable materials. “We are working with Think Package, a custom package design company, on boxes that can fold out into placemats, include personal notes from the chef, include elastic banded slots for cutlery, and inset coasters for beverages,” says Albert Rothman, the vice president of food and beverage at EOS Hospitality, which owns and manages 16 independent hotels along the east coast. “We use eco-friendly packaging wherever possible.”
So while we collectively mourn the loss of many aspects of the breakfast buffet — the illicit glee of sneaking an extra muffin in your bag; the free-for-all power of plunking spaghetti next to raw fish next to pineapple next to Edam cheese next to waffles on your plate — there’s one travel standby in which we can still reliably find solace: the mini bar. Those, luckily, aren’t going anywhere.

Good locations to consume in Franschhoek
The village of Franschhoek is one particular of the prettiest places to go to in the Cape Winelands. And when it arrives to food stuff, it does not disappoint. From the Saturday farmer’s sector and a prime notch Indian to biltong shops and bistros, it’s got a fantastic focus of spots to try to eat together the Key Avenue. Right here are just a number of of the best…
Disclaimer: We had been remaining at the Leeu Estates so some of the key places to eat we tried out had been provided in our remain, having said that these are real recommendations!
Excellent areas to take in and consume in Franschhoek
1. Marigold
If I’m suitable, Marigold is the only Indian restaurant you’ll uncover in Franschhoek and it is the brainchild of Analjit Singh who founded the Leeu Estates and wider Leeu Collection (you can read a bit much more about the Leeu Estates in my evaluation in this article).
As you’ll in all probability know, Indian influences are present across significantly of South Africa’s delicacies, thanks to the background of Indian immigrants in Durban.
At Marigold, you’ll find a fabulous modern restaurant with exposed brick, fashionable art and a extremely chi-chi style. The menu is composed of biryanis, signature curries and tandoor charcoal meat executed by a team who’ve been directed by Chef Vanie Padayachee, who hails from Durban in actuality.
Tumblr media
Verdict: While the parts were fairly modest and staff appeared a bit hesitant at instances (the cafe was in its infancy when we visited) there have been some attractive flavours throughout the dishes and we loved it. Very trendy place and wonderful wines. (oh and look at out the lovely De Villiers Chocolate Shop even though you are right here in Heritage Square.)
Heritage Square, 9 Huguenot Road, Franschhoek 7690, Western Cape, South Africa
2. Leeu Home
Leeu Dwelling is a pretty chic sister residence of the Leeu Collection and provides a excellent assortment of 12 boutique rooms for those people who want to keep in the heart of Franschhoek and appreciate the stunning Cape Dutch architectural style of the several homes in this region.
The cafe at Leeu Residence, regarded as The Conservatory, is tremendous smart and fantastic for a advanced lunch quit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We dined outdoors in the sunshine near to the stunning swimming pool and had a variety of internationally-influenced plates like spring rolls, Caesar salad and mozzarella-topped bruschetta.
Tumblr media
Verdict: I adored the placing in this article: the striped backyard home furnishings felt extremely French and I don’t know what was best, the friendly staff, the lovely mountain views or these extra-ish truffle fries!
12 Huguenot Rd, Franschhoek, 7690, South Africa
3. The Franschhoek Village Current market
The Franschhoek Village Market place normally takes area in the village just about every Saturday (weather dependent) and is not only a charming place to do some procuring (you can select up all the things from arts and crafts to garments and jewellery listed here) it is also a great area to take in!
Tumblr media
There’s a adorable espresso van exactly where you can decide up a correctly poured flat white and then you can make your way as a result of cheeses, biltong, ‘samoosas’, cakes, salads and all types of other delectable points. You’ll also uncover loads to consume, including community craft beers and of class wine!
There was a dwell band when we visited and a good deal of hay bales to kick back again on if you occur to fall into a foodstuff coma.
Tumblr media
Verdict: Make it your mission to go listed here! Excellent local community vibe and best for a sunny day.
29 Huguenot Road, Franschhoek, Cape Winelands
4. Tuk Tuk Brew
Tuk Tuk Brew is a small dim horse in the Franschhoek foodstuff scene. Just when you feel you have learnt everything there is to know about South African wine, a entertaining and lively microbrewery slash Mexican foods sign up for pops up. I know, right.
Tumblr media
You can satisfy the brewmaster and do tours here of the microbrewery – a joint venture among the Leeu Collection and Cape Brewing Business. Then the moment you’ve learned anything there is to know about craft beer, you can buy a tasting rack of 4 or 5 miniature craft beers which is a great way to get a feel of how they differ.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m not a huge beer drinker but I truly enjoyed it and the foodstuff is so very good. Feel relaxed Mexican influenced tacos, pulled pork burgers and mouth-watering corn on the cob. If the sun’s shining, sit exterior and soak up the buzzy vibe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Verdict: Tuk Tuk us a indicator of the new, additional great and relaxed vibe that’s coming to Franschhoek so assume a younger group and laid-back really feel. It’s a great put to visit in amongst all the high-close places to eat and good eating that Franschhoek does so effectively.  I just can’t suggest this location adequate.
5. The Dining Place at The Leeu Assortment
If you are being at the Leeu Collection then you will extremely likely dine in The Eating Place, a quite grand however fashionable restaurant that boasts, arguably, some of the most effective views in Franschhoek.
It is headed up by British chef Oliver Cattermole and gives a menu of intercontinental favourites cleverly infused with Cape Malay approaches and South African substances. Read through my evaluate of the Leeu Assortment to locate out a lot more.
Verdict: Sublime location, attractive staff members and beautiful meals. Perfect for a intimate evening meal and honestly, the food will blow you away.
Dassenberg Rd, Franschhoek, 7690, South Africa
Tumblr media
6. The Tasting Area (before long re-opening as a brand new cafe!)
If you ever frequented Franschhoek even though The Tasting Area was still all around, you will know that this was one incredible spot to take in. This no-menu idea restaurant at the fabulous Le Quartier Francais required you to e-book out at minimum a few hrs of your evening and sit back again as a stream of entertaining and theatrical dishes have been placed in front of you, prepared to consider your tastebuds on a culinary experience.
Tumblr media
Everything from ‘African soil’ to fynbos infused delights were being laid out in entrance of us and it experienced all the fancy techniques you’d assume from theatrical eating whilst telling all kinds of tales about South Africa.
What’s much more, each dish was paired with a fine South African wine and the aspect of surprise created it a very interesting working experience! The unfortunate detail is, immediately after 12 a long time, Government chef Margot Janse has hung up her chefs aprons and The Tasting Room is at the moment undergoing a refurb and transformation into a diverse cafe. And it’s the group behind La Colombe who’ll put together to get more than the reigns any moment now (August I assume).
So whilst I can not propose The Tasting Space any more, I have been advised its successor is likely to be just as revolutionary and enjoyable. So check out this room and if you get to visit, enable me know what it is like!
Cnr & Streets, Berg St & Wilhelmina St, Franschhoek, 7690, South Africa
Tumblr media
And which is my record!
I hope this has served you in your travel plans on in which to consume in Franschhoek. If you at any time get to take a look at this beautiful put I hope you have a fantastic time and remember to permit me know how you get on!

Chicago, that toddlin' town
I guess very deep inside I love it: I always end up visiting freezing places in December for a quick holiday before the actual big holidays. First it was Russia, then Finland, London and now Chicago. I must definitely have a fetich with the cold, because it’s really unbearable with -18C, and yet, here I am.
Tumblr media
Chicago is cold, yes. But it’s wonderful as well. I can’t wait to come back during summer time. If I find it gorgeous already, I can’t imagine then. Winter isn’t that bad either: all the beautiful places you want to go, see and know are actually empty, picture-perfect awaiting for you and your enjoyment. Some rooftops get cold very easily but, there are other closed ones, surrounded by glass, already ready to fight the winter back, gifting you a beautiful sight of Chicago lights within the comfort of AC.
Tumblr media
You breath and eat its culture. People are polite. The American flavor is present in every corner. It’s hard to describe a particular neighborhood or place; instead, you just have to wing it to discover it. If, as per my point of view, New York City is the heart of the US (at least on the East Coast), where the culture beat and rhythm is determined, Chicago must definitely be its lungs: the air is fresher, the city is cleaner, more tidy yet exciting, smaller but rich, more elegant and better taken care of, making sure the blood stream fluids hassle-free in this living being that is America. I mean, it’s called the Windy City for a reason!
A mix of Sydney, San Francisco, Singapore and Sweden (all of them with S - such a weird coincidence) with a dash of Toronto and Austin, this is a perfect merge of everything. What Yangon is to SEA, I believe Chicago is to North America’s East Coast.
Downtown Chicago, The Loop & River North, the main stuff.
Michigan St. is one of the city’s main arteries, it’s fully decorated, with its fancy boutiques, stores and hotels, charming the riverwalk and its surroundings. The sharp cold, the one that makes you feel like you are about to lose your fingers in any sudden bump or gentle touch, paints the city with a crisp white - still figuring out whether it actually came from my frozen watery eyes or the snow itself. Regardless, it’s indeed a charming Winter Wonderland.
Tumblr media
Arriving from O’hare to any part of town is quite easy thanks to the CTA. I went off on Washington stop and walked a few blocks reaching my friend Gabe’s house by New East Park. A compulsory stop at Millennium Park, with a visit to the wrongly named “bean” (it’s actually named Cloud), the Art Institute of Chicago - awarded the best Museum in the World by Trip Advisor until 2018 for four years in a row - is a must. But what is even more important is to try Chicago’s pizza emblem: the stuffed pizza pie at Giordano’s. It has multiple locations, -the original one being at River North- and its menu is full of the good stuff. We went to the one by the Bean instead, and be prepared: it’s a lot of food and it will take at least 45 mins to reach your table. So don’t get fooled, try to hold on and avoid ordering appetizers, don’t be like us, if not you’ll get super full before the main food star. It’s rich and full-filling, the doe is fantastic, it honors the actual “pie” name it stands for, the sauce is delicious and the stuffing reminded me of the pizza rellena my Nona used to make, although with a complete different taste (ours was way better, coz it had bacon, anchovies and eggs).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After an evident food comma, be prepared to check out a wonderful sunset at London House, a hotel & rooftop bar strategically located on the intersection of Michigan St. and the Riverwalk, where you can be mesmerized by Chicago’s skyline. If you are visiting in winter, remember to drop by early (sunset in December happens approximately around 4:30pm), and if you are checking it out during summer nights, be ready for some music and fun until late.
A great winter alternative is The Signature Room & Lounge - a closed yet wonderful restaurant, located on the 95th and 96th floor of one of Chicago’s tallest building. A reminiscence of  the Hyatt Hotel in Tokyo and a flashback to Charlotte’s wondering sights at the massive windows in Lost in Translation happens when you first face those monumental glasses, while being charmed by Chicago’s lights and movement. From 5 to 7 there’s a very convenient happy hour, so be mindful to check it out: Prosecco for me, Old Fashion for Gabe. Another incredible talk for our memories.
Right next to it, you can find The Drake Hotel, now owned by Hilton, also known as the place where Al Capone lived here in Chicago.
Tumblr media
When it comes to dinner, man, you’re in a pickle! Chicago is known for its food scene and for a reason. It’s foodie’s heaven. Thankfully, talking with locals, residents and cross-checking with blogs and seasonal magazines, I can undoubtedly say that The Purple Pig is the place to go. Mediterranean cuisine with a twist, with a wonderful collection of wines and charcuterie. We shared three delicious dishes: whipped feta with honey and sweet heirloom tomatoes, butternut squash with peanut butter and adobo, to finally wrap it up with an exquisite Spanish grilled octopus with potatoes and pesto greens, which made us end up with no extra room for dessert - my friend Belu would be so disappointed on me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right across the street, you can take some pictures at the Intercontinental Hotel, which hosts Michael Jordan Steakhouse (not a biggie, but it’s kind of funny that this legend, Mike 23, has a restaurant on his own). Wrap up your night with some blues. Walk down the area to find your favorite bar, hopefully one with no or little cover fee. We went to Blue Chicago ($10 bucks), grab a IPA Goose Island beer (the local brew) and enjoy some tunes. It was really amazing - I could listen to this music all day long.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Up North: Old Town, Wicker Park & Longan Park, the cool stuff.
Head up to Old Town, near Lincoln Park. Take the brown line (if you manage to activate your CTA card, it’s not an easy task if you don’t have a US phone number) and travel 4 long stops. This neighborhood holds St Michael’s Church, one of only seven buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Start your tour over there, and check out the beautiful architecture that surrounds it. It’s an extremely weird merge of modern and old buildings and styles, with some very well preserved gems. Same happens downtown. I guess that after the fire, the city really focused on keeping its charm as untouched as possible. And damn they are doing a great of a job at it!
Tumblr media
Up there, one of the main roads - which is also a National highway - is North Wells Street (IL-64 Route, oh well hello New York’s BQE deja vu!) and check out Second City, an iconic Comedy Club and Theater in the US - thanks Juan for the tip!-. It started as a small cabaret theater nearly 60 years ago and has since become the world’s premier name in improv-based sketch comedy and education. Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Chris Farley, Tina Fey, Bill Murray and Mike Myers are just some of the name-dropping figures that appear as their alumni.
Tumblr media
Right in front of it, there’s Foxtrot Cafe, a wonderful and warm place where to have breakfast. It’s iconic spicy chicken biscuit is a must, and you can pair it with the coffee of your choice. Almond cap for me. After some needed calories to fight the -8C temperature, I headed east to Wicker Park.
What a wonderful place. It’s dodgy, ruined down and hipster-looking. It is truly fantastic. The best of British’s Shoreditch with the untapped, gritted vibe of Brooklyn’s Bushwick or Flatbush, with the crazy look of Seattle’s Pike/Pine-Capitol’s Hill. This is where High Fidelity (2000s, John Cusack in a record store movie) was shot. Gentrification is the hype word you’ll hear, but still, Wicker Park remains a vibrant hub of culture and commerce in Chicago, riddled with boutiques, restaurants, cocktail bars, concerts venues and condos. It’s main area is located around the six corners of Milwaukee, North and Damen Avenues.
Starting from Milwaukee Ave. South, make a compulsory stop by Myopic Books, a nerdy paradise for all second-hand book fans. Continue your literally hunt down by Milwaukee Av and rejoice at Volume’s Book, get the warm hot cocoa you were craving for while writing your travel blog post about Chicago or read a new book instead. For a more funky venue, walk down a few more steps to find The Wormhole, Chicago’s most visited coffee shop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Wormhole is a place very hard to define, so I will just say that is an '80s-themed rustic coffee shop, complete with a DeLorean, pouring locally roasted coffee. It’s a fun place with great music and even better wifi. It’s easily and strategically located before arriving to some of greatest stores by Milwaukee Ave. Make some time to check out all the fantastic the second hand, vintage and thrift shops like Kokoroko, Free People, & or if you prefer, stop by Reckless Records for some great music discounts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Make yourself some time to check it by night as well, you can have fun at Emporium, the great arcade place or even have a drink or two at Davenport’s, the great piano bar and cabaret.
Tumblr media
The best place - and most iconic one - to have a cozy, all-time-classic lunch is Dove’s Lunchonette, inspired in old ‘60s and ‘70s Chicago’s soul and blues. It’s really fantastic. Becky (almost certain that was her name) is the great waitress that will recommend you all the goodness available in the menu and refill your coffee or tea, always with her laugh and great vibe. Make sure to appreciate the tunes and the environment, it’s a great memory from this city. A delicious poblano pepper filled with chicken and cheese, deep fried in delicious crumbles, topping a side of mexican rice with house, home-made spicy sauce. Yummy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Continue your exploration heading towards Logan Place, where more cool stores like tattoo parlors and skate stores are located. Don’t miss out on the street art scene and the 606, the Chicago’s Highline. Make a stop at the “Greetings from Chicago” mural and don’t hesitate to refuel at Colectivo Coffee, a great place where co-working and coffee brewery merges.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Going West: Fulton Market, Greek Town and West Loop
This is THE place to eat. All of Chicago’s top restaurants are here, even the ones that have their venues by the riverwalk, they know they need to be here as well. We tried out luck at Au Cheval, named the best burger in America for a while, but it comes with a cost: an hour and a half waiting queue. Instead of getting our burger treat, with it’s typical knife on top, resembling some kind of conquest your stomach is about to achieve and colonize, we decided to give Green Street Smoked Meats a chance. This is one of Gabe’s favorite spots in Fulton Market, and it’s a nice and fancier Texas Smokehouse. Communal, big tables, great music and vibe, where to find delicious BBQ, even better brisket which we tried to tuned down with healthier sides such as yummy broccoli salad as well as the traditional pickle cabbage one, are there to ignite your night.
The Green Door Tavern is an awesome tip my parents gave me. Apparently, it was vox populi back in the ‘20s that the establishments that had a green door, hosted a speakeasy inside and did not respect the prohibition rules of no-alcohol. So, let’s party like it’s 1921 and enjoy a drink or two in here! Once you enter, it just look like a regular, sports and antique bar, where memorabilia and Irish Pub look-and-feel rules the place. Yet, do not despair: head to the back, go down the stairs and before reaching the bathroom, try to listen to the music. A wall, a tricky one, hidden behind a books and ornaments shelf, you shall find Heaven’s door. A funky, old school, hour-o-clock-show bar, where to enjoy strong cocktails, and around the clock shows. Music, magic or, it’s signature event: burlesque. After choosing your drink from a very unique tarot-card-like menu, indulge yourself in the ‘20s era with the surprise show and the old-school videos played on the stage curtains. It’s a fantastic experience!

Visit the Hoxton hotel (always beautiful, never disappointing according to my experiences in Brooklyn, Paris and now Chicago) and head up to it’s rooftop restaurant Cabra - a Peruvian fusion delight. Great for brunch or lunch, we indulged on it’s sample menu and enjoyed some fresh guac and chips, a pulled pork belly sandwich, a tuna tiradito, goat empanadas and some delicious mango and chocolate dessert. It was a perfect Thursday food-comma.

Before leaving Fulton Market, walk around and visit the brand new Time’s Out Market. Contrary to the Hoxton experience, Time’s Out is a great content platform with great venues around the world. Although, no market is as nice and as delicious as the Lisbon one. It was the first Time’s Out market they launched, and although I’ve visited some others like New York’s or Chicago’s, they do not manage to create the same vibe and atmosphere you can find in Lisbon. Chicago’s one is nice and you can find top names such as The Purple Pig and so on, but maybe you wanna give some of the surrounding restaurants a try before choosing Time’s Out Market.
Wrap it up by Navy Pier & a bis on the Riverwalk
While my stayed in the Windy City was coming to an end, I went to the Navy Pier for sunset to be wonder by the Michigan Lake and its view. We also walked down again the main road and visited The Protein Bar, a healthy venue were wraps and juices are top notch and you with your purchase you contribute to a local start-up. You can also check out a top view of the Bean and the Millennial park at Cindy’s, the rooftop of Chicago’s Athletic Association. Visit the Public Library and imagine yourself studying at the same booths or with the same texts Obama once did. Have a coffee by the Theater District at Goddess and the Baker.

Head to Nonnina for some yummy Italian and even better service. We had some wine, pasta and salmon to celebrate my last night in the city. Call it a day by visiting another Varela’s Family recommendation and favorite: The Redhead Piano Bar. This energetic, fun and light-hearted venue is a fantastic spot where to drink your sorrows away, sing your heart out and laugh as hard as you can. The talented crew at the piano and mic will sing your requests for tips and will cheer and entertain your night with fine tunes, Chicago’s stories and public interaction that will certainly lift any night and place a unique bow on your unique Chicago Farewell.

4 days in Chicago is not enough, specially if the cold forces you to be inside. I guess the same applies in summer: it wont be enough either due to the outdoor activities the city will offer.  Next time I will drive a little bit uptown heading to Superdawn, the traditional and well known Chicago sausage drive thru. I would also love to visit Manny’s Place, a traditional deli that’s been around for quite a while now, as well as to Kingston Mines, the traditional blues bar near Lincoln Park and Zoo -which we did actually go but too early for a show- as well as another fun and very hard to find ( I need to research a little bit more) tiki-bar speakeasy called three dots and a dash. Chicago, you’ve been awesome - I’ll be back!
