I played “마비노기” when I was an elementary school student but I stopped to play because my computer was too foul to play this 1st generation full-3D game. Since I didn’t play the successful social-based MMORPG game after that, I’m a little nervous if I could get along with the other users in the game.

There’re a lot of options in this character making menu.

Her name is Nao. I could remember her demanding me to pay after two hours of play when the users should have subscribe for further game play. I asked her what to do and she said that it’s up to me.

I almost forgot to describe my character. I chose female character because I always picked female character in MMORPG because the clothes of female character are much more beautiful than those of for male characters. Also, since this is an virtual world, I could be different person instead of me in real world.

After some tutorials, my character sent to the square of the village. Because it was late evening of weekend, there were a lot of players talking with other people. Some of them were playing music so I asked some question about how to play a music in this game.

She kindly answered me that the music can be conducted by making a score with music coding system of this game. Many of the people were transcribing the score of existing game BGM or classic musics. 

After that, my character chose to be a warrior because the close battle with dummies was more exciting than other jobs. Even though this ethics group, Elf is not suitable for being warrior, she chose what she wanted to do.

When I returned to the square, a boy character was playing my favorite game BGM from Tales Weaver. I walked closer to him and listened the music for a while. After that, I tried to talk with him.

I said that the music is my favorite and he gave me some thanks to me. After that, he gave me an expensive equipment as a gratitude for a newbie of this game. I was so surprised because I couldn’t get this kind of kindness in other games especially when I don’t know anyone in them.

After the game play, I talked with my friends about the kindness of the users in this game. One of my friends said that the people in ‘마비노기’ is very kind to the newbies because there’re few newbies in this old game. But I played other old games and didn’t feel the kindness like this. I think the kindness of people is from the characteristics of this game, which is social-based.

I didn’t feel uncomfortable with this online-based interaction because I played game since I was a elementary school student. Also, I started to act as a member of online community like bicycle riding club or character drawing club. But the characteristic of the interaction in the game was a little bit different from the chatting because most chatting doesn’t provide avatar or emotion expression system. By the action (Shortcut “N”) of this game, the interaction between the users could be richer than the text style one.

The toilet flush dilemma

As an interaction designer I'm used to look carefully at everything that I touch and interact with. Handles, computer keyboards, stereo knobs. The toilet flush interface is not excluded, I'm interacting with it all the time, aren't you? 

Well, for the single button flushed there could be many interaction design considerations but I leave them in favor of the new and nowadays spread dual-flush water-saving toilets. 

Using drinkable water to flush the toilet seems like an insult to intelligence but at least we managed to create a way to save water for most of the cases. I expect from every toilet flush actuator to suggest clearly which of the two button serves what. Moreover I believe that there should be an ease in reaching and actuating the half-tank flush instead of the full-tank.

Often I have to face different toilets and I end up confused, which is the right button for half-flush? Some toilets have a small and a big button, you can think that the smaller tank is represented by the small one, but sometime the small button is not as easy to operate as the big button and in fact it prompts the full-tank flush. 

The small button of the interface in the picture is kind of uncomfortable to press because when you press it with the center of your hand on the center of the button your finger are sticking out of its circumference and you end up to not be able to flush. Is just smaller than the size of a hand but your brain process it because of its ambiguous size like you should press it with the palm of your hand and not with your fingers. After touching it the first time I stepped out and I observed the buttons. I discovered that small one has a a full circle, where the big one is not, look at the little bumb where the small button is cutting the circumference of the big one. I saw in this button all the characteristics to be the actuator of the big tank. You can say that the full circle is on top of the other one or in front of it, suggesting that can be the small tank, but I think is a illustrator nerd way of approaching it.

Out of curiosity I pressed the big one, of course "the right one". I waited until the tank was full again and couldn't resist to use the small one. It should flush double the water!

I redesigned the website for the Dominican Joe coffee shop on Riverside and Congress. Their existing website is dark and heavy which does not reflect the atmosphere of the coffee shop at all. I selected my color palette by choosing colors they used in their decor. I wanted the website to be light, fun, and bold. There were a lot of hangups during the coding process that really slowed me down. Despite that, I was able to get it functioning and close to what I had in mind.

For this assignment, i chose to redo the website of Mom's Tattoos. I took elements from the original site, and recreated it in a more functional, and easier navigation. The final result was a more cohesive version of the original website, so as to not change too much of the companies identity.
