Reading the original trilogy after A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and picturing Snow just absolutely FUMING anytime Katniss does something remotely Lucy Gray-esque.

your last reblog made me curious (see: nosy) - what's fanon you see a lot that you disagree with? or that you see evolving into something you no longer vibe with?

i don't see it too often, but a good example of something fanon that i dislike heavily is people's takes on say, finnick's character. people don't consider who he is outside of his trafficking and usually only ever consider his sex appeal more than anything. no nuanced ideas behind how much of an anomaly he was as a victor, being the only one to win so young, no thoughts on how his involvement in the trafficking rink affects his relationships with people (he's surrounded by a vast amount, but likely can only keep a few friends & struggles socially.) no ideas on how his trauma would set him back, just a lot of thoughts.

i would also say the idea that i don't enjoy the idea of people watering down characters with mental health or significant struggles down despite their intelligence or capability. examples being annie, wiress, haymitch.

we see annie in a state of episodic nature and the constant label of “mad girl” being assigned to her. but we don't know what she's like in moments of competence and peace, where she isn't surrounded by the games. we have no idea what she's like at all, because of how vague her character is minus the background we get from peeta and other people's ideas of her. with wiress, it's undermining her level of intelligence through how it's conveyed (her repeating “tick tock” in order to alert the rebels on how the arena works,) alongside her selective nonverbal behavior making her seem what, thick? with haymitch, it's the idea that just because he suffers with addiction, he's incompetent or stupid when we see him multiple times within the trilogy being more sharpened and more intellectual than most. i see text posts where he's easily dumbed down and fitted into a mould of textbook stereotypical alcholism, and it absolutely makes no sense to me. lots of mischaracterizing i guess!

a few honorable mentions is the assumption or headcanon that annie was probably mentored by finnick when it plays into an odd imbalance and need for debt within the relationship, and takes away from the fact that she “snuck up” on him.

also the consensus that katniss is?? neurodivergent/autistic? or coded to be? i understand that, because as an autistic person myself i do see where most are coming from, but she's also a sheltered teenage girl who lacked social connections, so what can easily be passed off as neurodivergency, can also just be poor social skills if not social awkwardness. but i'm somewhat neutral on that.

On a sober day, Haymitch arrives with a tiny ratty teddy bear. He pauses and fiddles with it for a moment before he says anything to her.

“This was my brother’s.” He swallows. And then he sets it on the kitchen counter next to Katniss as she tries to make a sandwich that will satisfy her raging taste buds. “I want you guys to have it.” He says softly.

She pauses, and looks at him. This isn’t the first, nor the second time, that he’s brought something of sentimental value for the baby. But the other times Katniss is pretty sure he was at least tipsy. She can tell by the clarity in his eyes that this was a completely sober decision. And it seems to have unsettled him slightly.

“Are you…sure?” She asks gently.

He swallows again, and nods. And then tries to produce a smile. “As long as that little booger doesn’t tear it up, yeah.”

Katniss returns the smile. “Thank you, Haymitch.”

He gives a curt nod, and then turns to go.

“Wait.” Katniss says.

When he turns back she feels like there’s a lump in her throat. She’s not entirely sure why she stopped him. But she realizes she wants to say it to him, that he probably needs to hear it. To know that she understands what it’s like to lose a sibling, someone close to you. Knows how hard it would be to gift their belongings to someone else. To give away what little physical evidence you still have of their existence, what still exists to show that they loved and were loved.

This time she’s the one to swallow before she speaks. “I’m…I’m proud of you, Haymitch.” She says softly.

It feels strange giving her mentor praise, especially when their usual dynamic is always teasing one another and poking at tender spots in each other's armor. Not to try and crack the other, but as a— what Katniss now realizes isn’t so healthy— way to show each other where they still need to toughen up. And as a twisted act of solidarity, that they both can acknowledge that they know the other still has wounds and hurts. It’s an understanding of sorts. An odd one, but it works for them. They’re never sincere like this. When it’s serious it’s always deadpan and to the point, more of a salt coating than a sugar one, making it sting a little more— as if they’re only playing it up— that way it’s easier to brush off and pretend it doesn’t hurt that much. It’s what they’ve always done. And Katniss feels like she might be breaking it.

She says the rest anyways.

“I- I think they would be proud of you too. I know- I know this means a lot-“

“I’m gonna stop you right there sweetheart.” He holds up a hand. “Just- that’s enough.”

It’s a quite brisk brush off, almost rude in the way he nearly snaps it. But Katniss knows the reality is that being sincere with him hurts a little too much to handle, and that’s why he reacts this way.

And then he surprises her. He decides to break their usual dance as well.

He steps forward and crushes her in a tight hug. He smells like smoke and sawdust and dirt. But it’s Haymitch. She hugs back, acutely aware that the last time they did this was over six years ago, just before the quell. She’d been the one in tears then.

“Thank you.” He says quietly into the top of her hair, voice both soft and gruff in the same breath.

When he pulls back he does his best to hide the tear, making to wipe it like his eye was itchy. She doesn’t point it out.

“Outta go finish that crib Peeta started. Make me a sandwich too, would ya? I’m starving.” He quips like their moment never happened.

She rolls her eyes.

I don’t know if this is canon or not. But I always got the impression that Finnick was not a fan of Gale Hawthorne. And I sleep well at night believing this 😌💅

I know this has been said already but I really admire how Suzanne Collins had the opportunity to milk the hunger games to the very end by making books about all the PoVs and even movies about other games but she knew that would cheapen the message she was trying to convey and she respected her characters and own writing enough to stick to it till the very end. You are an amazing woman miss Collins. It should have been Gale not Finnick but you are such an inspo.

Hayniss (Age Gap - Ages not provided)

"These two are kindred spirits. They both survived the games using their wits and then cope with the aftermath using their hardened hearts.

This ship is tragic because not only is it questionable to society due to the age gap and dynamics, but they also could never be together because Katniss is forced into a fabricated relationship with another victor of the games, Peeta, for the sake of preserving the Capitol's image in allowing the two of them to survive the games.

You see, Peeta and Katniss have to portray their refusal to kill each other as an act of love rather than the act of defiance it really was. Meanwhile, Haymitch, as Katniss' (and Peeta's) mentor, has to be one of ones orchestrating said romance behind the scenes as part of what is essentially her PR team.

Haymitch has to instruct Katniss, this cold hearted and brash girl who warmed his soul and reminded him of who the real enemy is, on how exactly to convince others she's in love with someone who isn't him. I think this is all also poetic and tragic in a sense, as she's the first tribute he really tried to help win the games in a long time. He sees himself in her, he's protective of her, and you can't tell me he doesn't love her."

SeymourxTwoey Propaganda (Species Difference, Abusive Dynamic)

"Twoey is the least interesting part of the movie in canon for me, but I find him much more interesting when I think of him/write him as simultaneously being a voice in Seymour's head, a physical manifestation of his intrusive thoughts/mental health struggles, and an independently alive/conscious, mute alien plant. This way of conceptualizing him is weird and contradictory by design, partially because it makes him and his dynamic with Seymour interesting and complicated and partially because it raises questions as to where he ends and Seymour begins and just generally adds a lot of weight and edge to Seymour's self doubt/loathing, which is his fatal flaw in my rewrite where one of the changes is that Seymour is a tragic Shakespearean hero. Most of my specific thoughts on this ship don't make sense without the context of my rewrite, but I like the ideas of Seymour literally getting screwed by the physical manifestation of his mental health issues (which he is consenting to due to his drive to torture himself/self hatred manifesting in this case as psuedo-sexual attraction towards a being that is manipulating/abusing him, has the potential to cause him great physical harm/pain, and is named after/heavily associated with his crush), having a sexual relationship with a being that he has a sort-of father-son dynamic with when he himself was abused by his sort-of father, and 'accusing' (in quotes because he isn't actually mad at her and doesn't think she did anything morally wrong, he also doesn't communicate with her about this because he's terrible at communicating with her) Audrey of seeking out abusive guys when he is literally doing that. Technically the version of Seymour x Audrey in my rewrite is extremely comship as well, but it's not in canon, and Seymour x Twoey is also fun, so I'm submitting it even though the Little Shop fandom has like five people in it and most of them don't even like Seymour x Twoey."

Things has been good between them, yes he has his episodes and they only are getting stronger out of it. Something was also different, since they actually did finally got married for real this time. Who would've thought that she would actually get married and yet here she is. She loves him and she didn't wanted to imagine life without him in it. Her mom comes to visit from time to time to see how everything was going. Today was different, she hadn't been feeling well for a few days or maybe even weeks. And she didn't even know what was going on to begin with, yet she kept on going to the woods to hunt even when she wasn't feeling 100%. When then she finally figured out what was wrong since her mom had been visiting and just left to go back to 13. As Katniss was in utterly shock and she was about to freak out. No, no this can't be happening. Yes they talked about having kids and he finally managed to convince her and yet she didn't expected to end up pregnant this fast.

Katniss went for a walk to just let this all sink in and not sure how to tell Peeta, she was not going to be a good mom. Or at least she was thinking she wasn't going to be a good one. Once she was back home and closed the door behind her she took a deep breath. Still having a panic attack, walking to the kitchen where she saw Peeta was. "Peeta..." Katniss mumbled as she just had to tell him. "I-I know why I haven't been feeling well for the past weeks." Taking a deep breath again. "I'm pregnant... we're going to be parents." There she said it and she didn't know how he would reply to it.

Right after she told him, she felt like she had to run to the bathroom as she turned around and ran out of the kitchen and threw up in the toilet. Yes, this all definitely made sense the constant throwing up, especially during the mornings. She then sat down on the floor by the toilet as she sighed. Was this going to be like this for nine months? If that was the case it was going to be a long pregnancy. She was still freaking out, this can't be happening. Slowly getting up and then she was sliding down the front door as she pulled up her legs. "I can't do this, I am not going to be a good mom. I know we talked about this and I agreed. I just didn't expected it to happen so quick. You, I am absolutely sure you are going to be an amazing father. Me? a good parent? Don't think so."
