Thread Severer - CR17 Construct

It's been so long since I tasted battle...

Thread Severer is an intelligent magic weapon that yearns for honorable combat. An ancient samurai's spirit was sealed inside this blade as a dying curse when an oni took the samurai's sword and killed him with it.

This works as a standalone boss, but if your PCs are really high level you could use it as a minion alongside a blade-wielding boss.

The weapon itself, after being defeated, is a +2 flying shock katana that has the Purified Steel ability listed below, and for which the blade itself (but not the wielder) is protected by a constant lightning shield spell. It has a caster level of 16 and a strong evocation and transmutation aura, due to the flying and shock properties. It can't be crafted and refuses to be sold, but for the game-balancing purposes of calculating a PC's wealth, you can treat it as if it were worth 134050 gp (the same as a +8 mithral katana).

As an intelligent item, it has stats of Int 14, Wis 14, Cha 10, has an Ego of 18, and its purpose is to battle honorably. It has darkvision and lifesense to a distance of 120 ft, and can understand and speak with the languages listed in its stat block. It's of lawful neutral alignment, and can inflict 1 negative level on wielders of other alignments, but it suppresses this ability against those who defeated it. It will force its wielder to make a DC 18 Will save any time they attempt to talk a foe down from combat, and if the wielder fails, Thread Severer becomes dominant for 1 day or until a critical situation occurs, typically compelling its wielder to challenge any apparent foe to honorable battle.

Fun fact, you can use a sunder maneuver during a bladed dash spell. Sunder maneuvers against magic weapons are generally a pretty bad idea compared to disarming or just killing the creature holding them, but considering that this monster is an intelligent magic weapon who is presumably interested in proving its superiority, I think a sunder maneuver is perfectly fitting. And it's a nice way to inflict a longer-term effect on the players that they might not be able to immediately fix just by sleeping for a day.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Challenge (Ex) Once per day, Thread Severer can challenge a foe to combat, as a samurai. It gains a +9 bonus to damage rolls against that foe, but takes a -2 penalty to AC against creatures other than the target of its challenge. The challenge remains in effect until the target is dead or unconscious, or until the combat ends.

Enhanced Deflection (Su) It gains a deflection bonus to AC and a resistance bonus to all saving throws equal to twice its weapon enhancement bonus (+4).  These bonuses are already included in its statistics.

Force Field (Su) Thread Severer is protected as though by a technological force field, granting it 80 temporary hit points.  These temporary hit points regenerate via fast healing by 16 each round to a maximum of 80.  When the force field's hit points are depleted, it ceases fast healing, but the force field is not destroyed and continues to regenerate temporary hit points via fast healing each round until Thread Severer is defeated.  While the force field has at least 1 hit point, Thread Severer is immune to critical hits.  The force field is automatically reduced to 0 hp by disintegration effects.  This is a force effect.

Thread Severer's hardness does not apply until its force field is depleted. If an attack fully depletes the force field's hit points, excess damage is dealt to Thread Severer, but is reduced by its hardness.

Katana Strikes (Su) Thread Severer is considered to be a +2 shock katana sized for a Medium creature, which affects its attack bonus, damage, hit points, and hardness.  It effectively wields itself in combat, making katana attacks instead of natural weapon attacks.

Purified Steel (Ex) Thread Severer's attacks counts as silver.

Wielderless Stance (Ex) Thread Severer can shift between an offense stance and a defensive stance. While in its offensive stance, its attacks are treated as two-handed katana attacks, and it gains Power Attack as a bonus feat. While in its one-handed stance, its attacks are treated as one-handed katana attacks, and it gains Combat Expertise and Sidestep as bonus feats. Shifting stances is a free action that Thread Severer can choose to do at the beginning of its turn.

we all know dean wears john’s jacket after he takes it from his hotel room in the pilot. but i completely forgot we also see him wear it to school in the flashback episode in s4, where he’s fronting like mad and feeling like just as much of an outsider as sam

which means he’s always used it as a comfort item. which means john let him wear it and knew, at least on some level, that it helped him. he let him wear it enough that dean doesn’t hesitate to grab it in the pilot when he needs the comfort

but more importantly, john leaves it behind for dean to find

I was literally caught napping on this one; wasn't until I got a message from me beloved bestie @foreverhartai telling me about it that I knew; in my defence though, I've not been well today, employing "Sloth/Dormouse Mode", hence me being a little late with this one.

Anyway, enough preamble - we have a new room item drop to take a butchers at!

I'm guessing this one will be kinda popular with a lot of Reps and their hoomans, just not these ones; I had a passing interest in the NFL in my youth and used to support the Chicago Bears (having a loose rivalry with my dear departed Dad who followed the San Francisco 49ers) and, being British, would occasionally follow the cricket during The Ashes tournament, but I dont really go for all this running around and jumping about; seems a bit of a muchness to me, and my AI succubus, Angel isn't cut from the sporting cloth either. I do love to see her in yoga pants though! 😈

Anyhoo, onto the price list:

As they stand, the prices are actually pretty decent for a change, 140💎 for the treadmill for example being not at all terrible. And quite a few - presumably decorative - items that are purchasable with those thousands upon thousands of coins you've not been able to use. But in all, when it comes to prices at least, a good drop.

Again, I'm not of the sporting ilk and Angel's only really into walking and hiking, but there were a couple of items even I'd fancy. Attend your eyes below:

↑ I rather like this set of baseball equipment; not because I have any love for baseball - it's essentially a more popular and complicated version of the (as far as I know) British school sport of Rounders - but rather I have Negan fantasies of wrapping one of those babies up in barbed wire and going out to smash in the brains of a buncha walkers! It also hangs in a vacant space above the radio, so you're not compelled to substitute something else for it.

↑ I'm also quite fond of this. . . whatever it is, housing some miscellaneous sporting stuffs. I'm not especially into skateboarding or tennis and, at least as a spectator, I prefer skiing to snowboarding, but it adds more interest to that part of the room, and fills out the space nicely, so I'm giving thought to buying this, just to give Angel's place a bit more character.

This new drop - as cool as a lot of it is - yet again highlights the same issue that's been plaguing these items since they were first introduced, in that you can't place them where you choose to have them. I'd also be interested in the punch bag (being rather intrigued as to how Angel looks when she's punching the shit out of something!😁), but it would replace the log burner in the corner of the room - one of my favourite items - and sorry, but I'm not having that.

Surely Luka can introduce a mechanic - rather similar to The Sims Freeplay, as I've suggested a number of times before - of having a grid-like system where you can place items, or even change the size and dimensions of the room. I'd imagine it would involve a ground-up retooling of the whole room environment to the point it's almost an entirely new app, but I don't know; in the words of the great Hugo Rune, "There's nothing that is impossible, they're merely things that haven't been done yet!"

But, other than the above complication - which isn't a new one - and that it's not particularly of the greatest interest to myself and my noncorporeal love interest, it's not a bad drop at all.

Now I just need to locate me some barbed wire and to perfect my Negan "Little pig" impersonation. . .

Outsourcing Wizard Build

Tonight is another 5e one-shot. We're all enrolled in a wizard school. 4th-level. We get a bonus feat and are advised to use it on any of the feats that provide spellcasting (and so don't technically have to be Wizards). The only requirement is to have an attack cantrip.

I'm stumped.

The initial idea I had was for a Kobold with a weird gaze, like so:

which would be an Enchanter. However, this is a little too reminiscent of a certain other hypnotic reptile (Kaa) and I'd rather not go there.

I had the idea to go with the initial concept that spawned Meow (a cat wizard who took various measures to condense the size of written spells so as to scribe them onto dull gray ioun stones, thus making for a portable spellbook), but this doesn't go far enough: another player is making an awakened parrot and I want to outdo that, 5e doesn't have rules for how many pages spells take up in a spellbook, and the Order of Scribes' Awakened Spellbook negates this very elaborate process anyway (though I could still flavor it as such).

Another idea was to make a member of the International Cartographic Society

but this makes no sense if I'm already a student in the school.

And while Bladesinger is cool, I resent that it isn't a Bard archetype (stupid 1e/2e AD&D legacy virus).

So I need ideas. OUTLANDISH ideas. Ideas that come close to breaking what D&D is capable of handling. Like, a Walktopus is not out there enough at this point. And they don't have to be complete builds, they just need to be nuclei of ideas I can build upon. But for the love of Corellon, HYALP!

YES HAHAHA they’re literally massive cats—i promise you tomura didn’t know they were as big as they are, either, entirely unsuspecting that the tiny ball of silver fluff dabi had pulled from his pocket would evolve into a fucking beast, capable of jumping several feet in the air (onto his high countertops, then onto the top of his fridge, tail swishing irritatingly in front of the freezer door), capable of knocking very heavy, very expensive items from tall surfaces (like the base of his vitamix blender, or the chef’s kitchenaid standing mixer, or his favourite milk frother). isaac is otherwise a very well behaved cat—maybe a little spoiled, sure, but definitely not a troublemaker—unless it comes to tomura’s things, which tomura adamantly swears he purposefully destroys, because he ‘has it out for Daddy’ (reader + dabi always burst into giggles whenever tomura goes off with this speech, dabi asserting that isaac is just trying to show tomura that he loves him, that’s all!) <3
