‼ Urgent Health Insurance/Trans Care Question ‼
Someone I know had a gender-affirming surgery recently that was supposed to be covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. The surgery was done in two parts—one last fall, and one the following spring. It was always planned to be done as two parts; that is how the surgeon always does that surgery. BCBSM is now claiming the second half of the surgery was purely a “cosmetic” surgery because xe has “no history of gender dysphoria”—directly contradicting xer doctors and the documentation BCBSM already accepted to cover the first half of the surgery. BCBSM is now claiming xe is personally on the hook for the >$7,200 bill BCBSM was supposed to cover, and has denied 3 appeals (most recently this morning). What options does xe have?

Not just related to Michigan, as every state must do reviews.
“In just two months, a bureaucratic review will begin that experts say could cost hundreds of thousands of low-income Michiganders their health insurance — and threaten nonprofit clinics that treat more than 400,000 Medicaid patients across the state.
Beginning April 1, more than 3 million Michigan Medicaid clients will have to prove they are eligible for benefits extended since 2020 under a federal health emergency that barred states from removing anyone from Medicaid during the COVID-19 pandemic. Michigan’s Medicaid ranks grew by more than 700,000 since the pandemic hit.
Federal estimates calculate up to 15 million U.S. Medicaid enrollees could lose coverage during the benefits review, including 6.8 million people who could be booted from the rolls despite being eligible.”

*Sighs* I'm dealing with something recently from Priority Health Insurance. I sought a diagnosis for ADHD last year (which I did get) and I started CBT around the same time. My insurance covered telehealth visits, which is what my therapist and I do.
I was originally paying $10 per session once a week. That was more than fair, it was affordable and I could handle that. Suddenly in September, my copay went from $10 a session to suddenly $244.05 that I owed my therapist's office. I legit panicked and contacted my insurance company to figure out what was going on.
The lady I spoke with saw what I previously paid and what I was paying now and she assured me it was probably just a billing error and that she would send it to the claims department. Okay, that's fine. It happens.
Now the thing I would like to mention is that I would receive statements from my insurance company once a month in the mail, and it would have the last four sessions in it for me to look over.
Next month? Same thing. $244.05 for each session. I finally logged on to the website (I forget it exists) and looked at my statements and my previous bills *were not fixed*. Called again, given the same answer, and my claims were sent to the claims department, and I was assured it would be resolved.
As the weeks passed I got paranoid. I set reminders on my phone to check again at the beginning of November to see if it was indeed fixed and to see if one of my more recent therapy sessions would show up there. On 11/07/22 I found the statements are not fixed, and my newest session with my therapist is showing the same $244.05.
I called, again, and got a hold of someone that was much more sympathetic about my concerns and fears. She said she would go ahead and sent it to the claims department but she was going to ask them what exactly was going on and why my bills suddenly got changed.
I honestly didn't expect a follow-up. But the following Monday, 11/14/22 I get a call that I sent to voicemail (I didn't recognize the number), but I noticed there was a voicemail left and I decided to listen in. About 10 minutes before my therapy session.
It was the same lady from the week prior. I could tell that despite her trying to stay professional in the voicemail that she was actually upset. She told me that the claims department said that I had been billed incorrectly from the start and that my therapist was not covered under the network (despite the referral sent). I was given no warning nor notification that there was a mistake and that what I was being charged would change. Nothing. No notice in the mail, no email or phone call. They just straight up just went: "Oh lol oops, you were supposed to pay more from the start, here, we'll fix that and not tell you, you just got to deal with it!"
Of course, getting on the zoom call with my therapist I was in *tears*. I explained to her everything that happened. Rather than a therapy session she and I sat together and tried to work out my next steps. She helpfully sent an email of questions I should ask my insurance company, such if her practice can be covered if they filled out anything. And if so, can my previous bills be billed to the insurance company retrospectively so I don't owe so much.
She also got me in touch with her billing team so I could set up a payment plan if that fell through and there was nothing that can be done, or if I can fill out a hardship form since I have been with them for a year now.
I've heard nothing so far from my insurance company. My therapist and I made plans that if I got no answer by Friday we would cancel my next session to avoid me being billed more.
I made an appointment next week with an insurance agent so I can find an insurance company that will cover my therapy sessions and switch while open enrollment is still in effect. It doesn't change the fact that I have, at my best estimate, $2196.45 that I owe because of my disgusting insurance company.
I have anxiety, depression, complex trauma, PTSD, and ADHD.
The American health system makes it nearly impossible for people like myself to afford therapy, medication, and treatment. My ADHD medication will run out at the end of this year, I can only hope I find affordable insurance that will allow me to keep getting treatment but I am not holding out much hope.
Our health system profits off of us. It makes us choose to get treatment and be in debt, or not get treatment to avoid debt. They don't care about us, just what they can make off of us.
It's sick.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our system is broken.  It is cruel.  It is dehumanizing, degrading, and it’s vile nature is so, so unnecessary.
We need universal healthcare today in America.  We needed it 40 years ago.  It’s cheaper, it’s simpler, it’s more efficient, it’s more effective and it is so, so, so much less cruel than what we have.
Tumblr media
Additional sources/references:
Universal Healthcare Cost in America would be cheaper by trillions of dollars
The US has worse life expectancies than socialized healthcare countries
We have worse generalized healthcare results
We have the most expensive care
Our system is so cruel and unique that doctors from other countries literally can’t believe what happens here
I can’t tell you where or how to activate to help solve this.  There are politicians, groups, and activists pushing for this in so many ways.  I can tell you when, though.
Now.

Things the Biden-Harris Administration Did This Week #39
October 18-25 2024.
President Biden issued the first presidential apology on behalf of the federal government to America's Native American population for the Indian boarding school policy. For 150 years the federal government operated a system of schools which aimed to destroy Native culture through the forced assimilation of native children. At these schools students faced physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and close to 1,000 died. The Biden-Harris Administration has been historic for Native and Tribal rights. From the appointment of the first ever Native American cabinet member, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, to the investment of $46 billion dollars on tribal land, to 200 new co-stewardship agreements. The last 4 years have seen a historic investment in and expansion of tribal rights.
The Biden-Harris Administration proposed a new rule which would make contraceptive medication (the pill) free over the counter with most Insurance. The new rule would ban cost sharing for contraception products, including the pill, condoms, and emergency contraception. On top of over the counter medications, the new rule will also strength protections for prescribed contraception without cost sharing as well.
The EPA announced its finalized rule strengthening standards for lead paint dust in pre-1978 housing and child care facilities. There is no safe level of exposure to lead particularly for children who can suffer long term developmental consequences from lead exposure. The new standards set the lowest level of lead particle that can be identified by a lab as the standard for lead abatement. It's estimated 31 million homes built before the ban on lead paint in 1978 have lead paint and 3.8 million of those have one or more children under the age of 6. The new rule will mean 1.2 million fewer people, including over 300,000 children will not be exposed to lead particles every year. This comes after the Biden-Harris Administration announced its goal to remove and replace all lead pipes in America by the end of the decade.
The Department of Transportation announced a $50 million dollar fine against American Airlines for its treatment of disabled passengers and their wheelchairs. The fine stems from a number of incidences of humiliating and unfair treatment of passages between 2019 and 2023, as well as video documented evidence of mishandling wheelchairs and damaging them. Half the fine will go to replacing such damaged wheelchairs. The Biden administration has leveled a historic number of fines against the airlines ($225 million) for their failures. It also published a Airline Passengers with Disabilities Bill of Rights, passed a new rule accessible lavatories on aircraft, and is working on a rule to require airlines to replace lost or damaged wheelchairs with equal equipment at once.
The Department of Energy announced $430 million dollars to help boost domestic clean energy manufacturing in former coal communities. This invests in projects in 15 different communities, in places like Texas, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Michigan. The plan will bring about 1,900 new jobs in communities struggling with the loss of coal. Projects include making insulation out of recycled cardboard, low carbon cement production, and industrial fiber hemp processing.
The Department of Transportation announced $4.2 billion in new infrastructure investment. The money will go to 44 projects across the country. For example the MBTA will get $400 million to replace the 92 year old Draw 1 bridge and renovate North Station.
The Department of Transportation announced nearly $200 million to replace aging natural gas pipes. Leaking gas lines represent a serious public health risk and also cost costumers. Planned replacements in Georgia and North Carolina for example will save the average costumer there over $900 on their gas bill a year. Replacing leaking lines will also remove 1,000 metric tons of methane pollution, annually.
The Department of the Interior announced $244 million to address legacy pollution in Pennsylvania coal country. This comes on top of $400 million invested earlier this year. This investment will help close dangerous mine shafts, reclaim unstable slopes, improve water quality by treating acid mine drainage, and restore water supplies damaged by mining.
Data shows that President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act (passed with Vice-President Harris' tie breaking vote) has saved seniors $1 billion dollars on out-of-pocket drug costs. Seniors with certain high priced drugs saw their yearly out of pocket costs capped at $3,500 for 2024. In 2024 all seniors using Medicare Part D will see their out of pocket costs capped at $2,000 for the year. It's estimated if the $2,000 cap had been in effect this year 4.6 million seniors would have hit it by June and not have had to pay any more for medication for the rest of the year.
The Department of Education announced a new proposed rule to bring student debt relief for 8 million struggling borrowers. The Biden-Harris Administration has managed despite road blocks from Republicans in Congress, the courts and law suits from Republican states to bring student loan forgiveness to 5 million Americans so far through different programs. This latest rule would take into account many financial hardships faced by people to determine if they qualify to have their student loans forgiven. The final rule cannot be finalized before 2025 meaning its fate will be decided at the election.
The Department of Agriculture announced $1.5 billion in 92 partner-driven conservation projects. These projects aim at making farming more susceptible and environmental friendly, 16 projects are about water conservation in the West, 6 support use of innovative technologies to reduce enteric methane emissions in livestock. $100 million has been earmarked for Tribal-led projects.

How the fuck does the US health system work? Everyone assumes you already know. It took you years to piece together. You speak to offline friends, adults with degrees and well-paid jobs; they don’t have the slightest clue.
As a US American, I have to tell you that there are two possible ways I can answer this:
1) We don’t know either. That’s why you’ll see people trading tips on how to navigate it. The entire process is so opaque and laborious that even professionals don’t know how it works outside their narrow area of expertise.
2) It doesn’t.
Anyway if you’re from the US and you ever wanted to know what tumblr feels like from a non-USAmerican perspective (please note that the rest of the world is not a monolith either and none of these apply without exception):
Everybody’s talking about brands and stores you’ve never seen in real life. You generally assume they exist, but they might as well be one giant prank the rest of the internet is in on.
You find a post that just sounds wrong. It makes no sense. It’s like OP lives in a weird alternate reality. 9/10 times, it’s just some USAmerican Thing.
You’re still not entirely sure how much an inch is. Or a foot. Or even how many of the former there are in the latter. You maybe know your height in feet and inches.
You have no idea how much a pound is. You’d also like to know how the fuck pound shortens to lbs.
What the fuck is “military time”
Somebody talks about some legal process or something similar. They don’t mention which country’s legal system this pertains to. You know anyway.
People talk about politics. None of it pertains to you. Many posts contain guilt tripping. “How can you not care about this?? Why won’t you reblog this?? People need to know this about x candidate for y position!” You’re busy trying to stay on top of the political landscape in your own country.
You pick up some random slang from the internet. Monkey see monkey do. You’re called racist. You didn’t know it was AAVE. You learnt it from black letters on white background, not from the mouths of people whose faces you could see. How would you have known? You try to unlearn it.
People tell you that you must publicly denounce Chick-fil-A or you’re homophobic. You don’t even know what a Chick-fil-A is.
People say you don’t know LGBTQ+ history. What they mean is you don’t know USAmerican LGBTQ+ history. Nobody cares about your country’s history.
You’re “called out” on using an “offensive” term. It’s (a direct translation of) a completely harmless word where you live.
People expect you to have an idea of how far apart 2 USAmerican states are. You barely know geography past your country’s immediate neighbors.
You randomly switch between British and American spellings. Nothing’s real and there are no rules.
People talk about multiple hour car rides and you get twitchy just thinking about it. You suddenly understand why USAmerican cars are so big.
Somebody talks about school shooting drills. You only ever had fire alarm drills.
You see a cool statistic. The study’s only about the US. It’s unfortunately of no use to you.
People misuse/misspell words and names from your native language. It’s tiring.
(You feel sorry for the French. Nobody should be allowed to mangle the word déjà vu like that.)
You’re still not over the fact that USAmerican school children are supposed to say that pledge thing every morning. You’re never getting over that.
You still don’t know why the men are fresh or what the fuck a sophomore is.
Who the fuck pays up first and then fills up gas??? That’s made up, right??
Everybody has a weird obsession with some comfort food you’d never even heard of before you signed up here.
Fellow non-USAmericans, please add anything else you can think of.
