Wanted to share my approach to media recently that's been not only healthier on my brain, but also gives me space to create is:

This person may not tell the perfect story for me. But if they can tell a story that entertains me, that's all I need.

If I want a story perfect for me, I'll create it.

And when i don't spend hours angry online about a piece of media, guess what I then have?

OODLES OF TIME TO MAKE THE STORIES I WANT OUT THERE.

i cracked this morning and read the first like 200 words of my og novel that i wrote when i was 13/self-published at 14

why did hank green post it on his instagram with praise?? like i think of it and i cringe. today i re-read the first 200 words and i wanted to stop existing?? why did my mom give him a copy of it i did not ask her to do that??? i just went to one of his concerts in 2014 and my mom just gave the book to somebody and for some reason that somebody gave it to hank green and then suddenly im in the crowd 15yo new best friend bc nerdfighteria and hank green is like "oh somebody gave one of the guys this book just before the show and i took a look at it and i kinda like it it's pretty good" and up he holds none other than my og novel he goes "a 14yo wrote this and it's pretty good this affirms my faith in humanity or something like a very young not-adult did this whole novel and it's not bad that's cool" idk what he said it was 10 years ago. and there's me in the crowd freaking the fuck out i say to my new bff who i had just met at the beginning of the concert bc we were standing next to each other like "BRO THAT'S MY BOOK" new bff is like "BRO THAT'S YOUR BOOK???" and starts jumping up and down for attention like "YO THAT'S THIS GUY'S BOOK" hank green hears points at me and goes "HEY HE'S RIGHT THERE YOUR BOOK'S PRETTY COOL KID" AND THEN!!! HE FUCKING PUT IT ON HIS INSTA??? AND PRAISED IT??? THE STICKY NOTE MY MOM LEFT ON IT WITH LIKE 10 WORDS OF SYNOPSIS STILL ON THE COVER??? ALL OF HIS INSTA FOLLOWER'S SAW MY MOM'S HANDWRITING??? AND MY WHOLE ASS INITIALS + LAST NAME??? A COMPLIMENTARY REVIEW BY HANK GREEN HIMSELF??? WHY?? WHY WAS MY 15 MINUTES OF FAME THAT CRINGE ASS Y/A NOVEL???

listen. i was 13 when i wrote that book. i was so full of brand new baby teen angst. i do not understand why hank green did not open the book flip through a couple pages go "oof this kid needs a therapist and a writing coach" and never mention it again. i do not understand why he mentioned it on stage, i don't know why he put it on his instagram, it was so bad. ohmygod. i wish i could forget it ever happened

Ways ISaT Changed Me: Part 7

Theater references (like, theater as an art, not specific shows) are really tasty. We need more of that.

Characters that think of themselves as the hero/villain of a book are out. Let's bring in more characters that think of themselves as the lead role. We need characters who believe they're only in the ensemble. Characters that don't think they're performing, that they're the audience of the rest of the world's play. Characters that orchestrate events and conclude they must be the director of the show.

I ramble about the contrast of being a stage girl and standing on stage.

Karen lost her stage. Starlight was no more, and she had to move on. But when she couldn’t leave that all behind, when she couldn’t accept the inevitable departure she died. She stopped acting. And so she had no choice, but to die.

Why didn’t Shiro die? In her darkest moments, overwhelmed with hatred for the stage and willing to forsake and destroy it all Shiro stubbornly threw away the stage. She stopped acting. Yet she lived.

A stage girl is greedy, prideful, passionate, and defined by their never ending determination to continue to act.

However stage girls are not bound by their love of the stage. To be a stage girl means continuing to act no matter what.

Even as Nana hates what the very stage she stands on signifies, and is made miserable by the fact of stage girls’ competitive nature she continues to stay on stage. In spite of herself she is still a stage girl.

Hikari lost her brilliance. She lost her passion for acting. It became meaningless to her. Yet even without a stage anymore her promise with Karen still guided her, even just by a thread. She remained a stage girl.

Of course stage girls can’t always love the stage. They, more than anyone else, must be painfully aware of what it means to live life on the stage. While they are bound to the stage they can exist in spite of it.

After all, stage girls act on many stages.

Even if stage girls are rejected by the stage. Even if they run from the stage. Even if they are destined for extinction. The stage cannot hold them back.

If a stage girl still has passion to continue acting, they can transcend any stage.

Shiro, even with all else lost you still had hope in the bond you and Stella shared. You didn’t forsake that.

It’s only if a stage girl loses that passion of their own accord that they can ever die.

And even then, they can always be reborn.

I love the H German boy story bc it’s his way of saying shit without saying anything, ya know? Which is pretty much his public default. All performers have their stage bits but he coulda let that one go or just change it into amorphous holiday talk but NO! He’s going to name check his German summer boo in 2023!

For real, it's the EXACT same stage patter, same story, go on, girl, give us nothing cloaked in something that seems major but only has a dash something because you're in your script era! I love the concept of asks having tags, THIS would be something I'd be way more into vs. badges, I'll just answer in REAL tags lol

i want more nuance to be entered into the discussion of the green girl sorority and how differently cynthia plays elphaba in comparison to those who came before her because while a lot of people are rightfully like "why was elphaba not black from the beginning" and celebrating that she is now being played by a black woman, i think we need to be careful in just writing off all the elphabas of the past as Random White Girls when the role was championed (and often followed/succeeded) by a jewish woman

the pop culture archetype of the Wicked Witch has deep roots in antisemitism stretching faaaar far back. there is a level of reclamation happening in casting idina menzel, a jewish woman, to play the Misunderstood and Maligned young girl who is branded as exactly that. and stage!Elphaba is also written and acted with jewish stereotypes in mind--she is loud, aggressive, no-nonsense, blunt. she is quick to advocate for herself and shut down the discrimination she faces. all of this is very intentional! her personality is abrasive from years of abuse, and that makes propagandizing her easy. this is literally the thesis statement of the musical--it's not about aptitude, it's the way you're viewed.

cynthia's performance of elphaba is fucking INSPIRED despite going in a completely different direction. she's much more reserved, analytical, one of her key character traits is how well she can read people (see her calling out Galinda as insecure/putting on airs in their first scene together, clocking that Fiyero is using his party guy persona as a shield for his own depression) elphaba's attempts to blend in and make herself smaller all fail simply because of her existence, if not that then because she feels empathy so strongly she often struggles to hold back from acting, protecting.

personality wise, though, cynthia's elphaba is very quiet and closed-off, not at all the bullet-to-the-face that she is in the stage show, and... she still gets propagandized and maligned. though this seems to contradict the other interpretation, it tells of the other end of the spectrum of propaganda, one that black women watching (and many, MANY other marginalized folks) are sure to identify with--it does not matter how "nice," how reserved, how small a black woman makes herself. a racist society will still scrutinize her every action for a way to parse ill intent from it, brand her as an angry black woman who is dangerous and wicked, and write off any humanity she has in the process.

these two very different interpretations tell of the lie of assimilation. the fact of the matter is, when you are marginalized, there is no way to sand down your edges enough to make the people oppressing you "accept" you. that is why wicked is a tragedy at its core. whether loud and aggressive or quiet and unimposing, there is nothing elphaba could have done to make the people of Oz see her as anything other than a scapegoat to blame all their problems on.

so while i definitely appreciate that people are excited for black girl era elphaba, i would encourage us all to still show appreciation for what came before--that was not white girl era elphaba. that was jewish girl era elphaba. two houses, both alike in dignity, two stories both worth being told.
