Algy slept unusually well on his cosy bed of leaves and moss, safe in the knowledge – or at least the belief – that the magic pumpkin lantern would protect him from the very real dangers which lurked in every dark night to threaten the wellbeing, and even the life, of a daft and invitingly soft fluffy bird.
And he was delighted and relieved, when he woke the next morning, to find that the pumpkin had remained its place, and was still glowing gently in the dim morning light, although not with the mysterious brilliance that had illuminated the darkness.
Algy was less pleased, however, to see that the Scotch mist had descended again in the night, and the woodland, which had already seemed impenetrable, was now also barely visible beyond a few short hops away.
Carrying his pumpkin with some difficulty, Algy fluttered over to a steep slope at the outer edge of the wood and paused to catch his breath, for a fluffy bird, though adept at flying, is not well adapted to toting unusual weights.
He was at a loss to know what to do next, or which way to go, for although Algy remained determined to continue his search for the light and warmth which must exist somewhere in the heart of the winter darkness, he had so far found not the slightest clue to guide him in the right direction. And although he was loath to abandon the magical lantern which seemed almost to have been provided deliberately for his use, the difficulty of transporting it would certainly make his quest much more challenging.
Resting on the wet grass, Algy pondered his situation, and as he wondered rather disconsolately how to proceed, some lines of a poem by Longfellow drifted into his mind through the blanketing mist, and he took heart again:
Tell me not, in mournful numbers,    Life is but an empty dream! For the soul is dead that slumbers,    And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!    And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest,    Was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,    Is our destined end or way; But to act, that each to-morrow    Find us farther than to-day.
Lives of great men all remind us    We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us    Footprints on the sands of time;
Footprints, that perhaps another,    Sailing o’er life’s solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,    Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us, then, be up and doing,    With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing,    Learn to labor and to wait.
[Algy is quoting the opening and closing three verses of the much-repeated poem A Psalm of Life by the 19th century American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.]

Waiter, waiter!! More Viking Scotnor headcanons please! (If you have any ofc :3 )
Oh no!! Not my weakness!! 😳
Their relationship during the viking age was mostly very amicable, apart from a few minor fights and arguments later on. In contrast to England and Denmark, Norway and Scotland mostly co-existed peacefully beside each other and even developed a friendship. Norway has always been a traveller and would rarely stay in one place for long, but he would often spend his summers and occaionally autumns in his territories close to Scotland before moving along on his next adventure. During these months Norway and Scotland would hang out and Norway would tell Scotland stories about all his adventures out on the sea, exploring westward, as a hired soldier for the Byzantine emperor, helping out Denmark with his wars agaisnt England, and joining Sweden on his trips east. Scotland would think these were the coolest stories and always look forward to Norway's occasional visits. And sometimes Norway would even bring him exotic gifts he'd picked up on his travels.

As a Scottish person - you all don’t understand the ROFL and glee at finding out Peridea is in fact filmed in Scotland…to quote the king that is Billy Connolly: “Scotland is just unbelievable…and there’s nobody else here! Miles and miles of nobody”
Ezra & Thrawn literally sent to experience every day Scottish life 😂

Hiii I hope your well!! I was wondering, you answered an ask a while ago talking about how Scotland tried having his own child, were you talking about the Darien scheme 👀👀
Indeed I was!! It's not something I've talked about in-depth, but it is a headcanon I have for Scotland. Despite his gruff personality, I do believe he's great with kids, even if he denies having a soft side.
And watching England go all 'gotta catch'em all' with the colonies, well that gave Scotland a desire to call one as his own. So even though the plan was risky, he poured all his energy into helping with the expeditions. However, as you know, the Darien scheme was a total failure due to many reasons that basically left the country bankrupt.
But that wasn't what left Scotland completely devastated by the whole thing. No, what hurt him the most was that he did meet a colony, a little boy he named Daniel, no older than four years old with dark reddish curly hair and soft brown eyes. But with the high mortality of the settlers from disease and harsh conditions, the risk of other empires invading and the shortage in supplies, Scotland realized the little colony wouldn't last long.
The Darien scheme happened over the course of two years, which included two attempts at colonization. Two years is a blink of an eye for a Nation, but for Scotland, it was two years he spent loving and caring for a little boy he called his son. He told him stories of his adventures and gave him the best he could as the little boy grew weaker and weaker as the settlers were dying off.
Scotland stayed by little Daniel's side until New Caledonia was no more, he stayed until the boy Faded in his very arms.
Since that day, Scotland hasn't been the same. He never attempted to become a father or father figure to someone ever again for fear of history repeating itself. He much preferred to be seen as an older brother or an uncle.

The mysteries of the Appalachian forest
I have been reading a lot about the Appalachian mountains recently. They are a mountain range in eastern to northeastern North America. It ranges from the Island of Newfoundland to Central Alabama. So they are huge and by the words of folklore, hold many mysteries.
You have a lot of videos on the internet telling you what not to do when you are out at night in the forest. Or even if you have a house near the forest. You must not whistle, you must not run, you must not call your name or the names of your companions, and many more rules. All of those things attract stuff above your comprehension.
It is known that once the Appalachians and The Scottish highlands were one mountain range. That explains why both of them hold immense mystical powers.
Have you ever experienced anything weird walking in the Appalachian forest? Do you have more tips on what not to do when you are there?

Brainrot has me thinking about Scotland and France, but an AU where they’re living on a riverboat. IDK I live somewhere where I see those boats all the time and it just looks so cute 🥺 They have their houseplants and stuff on it and probably set up a small table with a nice meal at wherever they moor and it just seems like such a sweet image

What WONDERFUL brainrot

Algy fluttered across the water to the other side of the burn and found himself a comfortable perch, nestled among the dense mass of drying bracken and heather which clothed the steep rocky bank. As he looked down upon the peaceful, trickling stream below, a dazzling ray of sunlight bounced off the surface of the water and flashed up into his face, glittering and sparkling with a magical, radiant glow.
And in that luminous moment Algy's thoughts suddenly turned to all the human beings in the world in need of hope. There were so very, very many of them, in so many different places and in so many different situations, but each and every one of them needed hope in order to continue to survive and cope with all the ordeals that they faced. It was far beyond the power of one daft fluffy bird to reach them all, but Algy wished that he could help bring a wee ray of light into their darkness, if only in a very small and fluffy way.
He was inevitably reminded of that most famous of all "hope" poems, and couldn't help wondering whether Ms Dickinson had maybe found some kind of fluffy bird of her own to inspire her 🪽🪽🪽
“Hope” is the thing with feathers – That perches in the soul – And sings the tune without the words – And never stops – at all – And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard – And sore must be the storm – That could abash the little Bird That kept so many warm – I’ve heard it in the chillest land – And on the strangest Sea – Yet – never – in Extremity, It asked a crumb – of me.
[Algy is quoting one of the 19th century American poet Emily Dickinson's most famous poems, Hope is the thing with feathers.]
