March 19, 2024 - Brown-capped Weaver (Ploceus insignis)
These weavers are found in mountain forests, sometimes near rivers, in a scattered range across central Africa. Foraging alone, in pairs, or in small family groups and often joining mixed-species flocks, they feed on insects and fruit. They build spherical nests with long spouts, hung from the undersides or tips of tree branches. Females lay clutches of two eggs.

#Archovember Day 4 - Mahajangasuchus insignis
Mahajangasuchus insignis was a large, predatory notosuchian from Late Cretaceous Madagascar, closely related to the more popular Kaprosuchus. While notosuchians typically were terrestrial, Mahajangasuchus seems to have adaptations for a more semi-aquatic lifestyle. It had a strong jaw and blunt, conical teeth, and likely ambushed small animals which came too close to the water. It would have lived alongside the abelisaurid Majungasaurus, the noasaurid Masiakasaurus, the titanosaurian sauropods Rapetosaurus and Vahiny, the giant “devil frog” Beelzebufo, and at least 7 other species of crocodyliforms, as well as a multitude of turtles, snakes, lizards, frogs, and birds.

The Drunken Tree
The Ceiba insignis or white floss silk tree flowering profusely in the conservatory. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
Interestingly, this tree apparently is also known as the Drunken Tree. In the wild, its flowers would’ve drawn bees, butterflies, sun birds and even monkeys to their sweet nectar. In this conservatory however, it would be sustaining one particular sun bird that had somehow got itself trapped in here.
