Fluttering In The Wind

The aperture of f/8 was used for this one as a deeper depth-of-field was needed in this close proximity work. That aperture happened also to be where the lens performed best. But under an overcast sky, the ISO was inadvertently pushed up to 6400 resulting in double-digit noise level. This was fixed easily enough in post.

Things looked fine at this size but a larger image would show somewhat patchy noise reduction. As with almost all context-sensitive type of noise reduction, spots close to areas with greater contrast tends to have untreated noise left here and there. This might’ve been the masking algorithm, I guess.

Snowy Egret and Common Green Darner Egretta thula and Anax junius

Have you ever heard the fact that dragonflies are one of the most successful predators in the world, and they catch about 95% of the prey that they hunt? Well, we watched this poor darner try and fail to catch a butterfly, and then immediately get snatched by this snowy egret. Maybe this guy was towards the end of its lifespan, or maybe just very unlucky!
