this is pretty random but i think that "you don't have to dress a certain way to be part of a music–based subculture" and "this way of dressing isn't real [insert subculture]" are takes that CAN coexist, but CONTEXT is important.
we should always remember that being part of such a subculture only has two requirements:
listen to the music that the subculture is based on,
have at least SOME sociopolitical beliefs that match the subculture.
for example, anyone that tries to tell you, "you MUST look a certain way in order to be punk" is full of shit. someone that wears pastel pink dresses or sweatpants 24/7 is JUST as valid as someone that rocks the spiky hair hairstyle, as long as they both listen to the music and share the same values.
HOWEVER
if your actions are contradictory to the general spirit of the subculture (values, music) then you don't belong in there, plain and simple.
to add to the previous example: if you claim to be punk but do 400€ SHEIN/ROMWE hauls every month, then i have news for you. not only are you NOT punk, but you somehow managed to miss the whole point of the subculture. such subcultures are inherently anti–capitalist and heavily based on DIY and thrifting, or at least being a mindful consumer.
(disclaimer: the person who shops fast fashion because it's the only good option they have, for whatever reason, is NOT the problem and shopping sustainably is a privilege not everyone has. i am not talking about that case here.)
hope that helps.

when you were a kid did you wish to die by getting sucked into a black hole just out of curiosity of what it looks like from the inside or are you normal?
