Anxiety was dealing with multiple panic episodes lately. It wasnât too uncommon for her. But, her employees noticed that she would grip onto her arms to the point it would take a huge amount of strength to help release herself. Anxiety had also been experiencing these same type of panic episodes during the night, which awakened some or all of the emotions.
Despite having been unavailable for many of them, Ennui has seen them all. She wasn't always sure what to say or do in these kinds of situations. She felt guilty because Anxiety had always been so encouraging, supportive, and nice to her. She wished she could do more for her beloved. What kind of friend was she?. Deep down, Ennui as well feared that the other emotions would sense her secret feelings for Anxiety and get leaked in some way. All she could do in those moments was sympathize with Anxiety and wish her negative thoughts would subside.
Ennui woke up first in the middle of the night, which was the first time she did during Anxietyâs recent episodes. She slowly removed her white face mask and heard muffled whimpers distant to where the console was. Ennui furrowed her eyebrows and quietly got out of bed, moving past the others so as not to wake them, and trailing the noises as it made her way to the console. Anxiety was kneeling down in front of the console, hyperventilating, hair messy, and once again, hugging herself, gripping onto her arms in a deadly grip. Ennui rushed to Anxiety and kneeled down to her level in front of her, and placed her hands on hers.
âAnxiety, breathe, mon ami. Slowly.â Ennui said gently but looked concerned.
âI-I-Iâm trying!â Anxiety breathed in a frantic tone, triggering tears which slowly began spilling down her cheeks. Ennui shushed her and rubbed her hands in an upside down motion in attempt to soothe her.
âBreathe with me.â
Anxiety nodded rapidly and Ennui inhaled and exhaled deeply, her low voice giving Anxiety a pleasant tingling sensation. Her voice had always been one of her favourite things about her. It was just calming and reassuring to her. Anxiety tried to repeat her but struggled.
âAgain.â Ennui said in an engorging tone. They did this excerise three more times and finally, Anxiety was breathing normally, but was still gripping her arms. Ennui did not let go her hands.
âAnxiety, please let go of your arms, mon douce, youâre hurting your pretty arms.â
More tears fell from Anxietyâs eyes and nodded slowly releasing them, while Ennui carefully tugged along with her. Finally, Anxiety released her arms making Ennui sigh out of relief. At this point she let go of Anxietyâs hands. Anxiety looked up at Ennui in her distressed state, shaking less.
âI-Iâm sorry Ennui, I know Iâve been doing this a lot lately, I donât know why, I feel so bad and I know Iâm disturbing your sleep, and I know you need your rest for the morning, and that I should just find a way to handle it myself, andâ-â
âShhh, hush, mon cher. You donât need to apologize. Viens ici dans mes bras.â
Ennui pulled Anxiety into her arms, resting Anxietyâs cheek on her chest, Anxiety enjoyed the soft material of her black shirt. Ennui wrapped her long arms around Anxiety and held her in a strong but comforting embrace. Anxiety cried softly now from the exhaustion of the situation. Ennui stroked through Anxietyâs messy strands with one hand in an attempt to comfort her more. After a while, Anxietyâs cries subsided and Ennui placed a gentle kiss on her forehead, which Anxiety noticed blushing furiously. But didnât say anything not wanting to ruin the moment.
âAre you alright now, Anxiety?â Ennui asked softly.
Anxiety exhaled and looked up at the indigo emotion. Her eyes were fatigued, bangs had creeped out underneath them, and her cheeks were tear-stained but smiled.
âYeah, I am. Thank you..â Anxiety replied weakly, looking down flustered.
Ennui smiled warmly and placed her hand on Anxietyâs right cheek and gently guided it back to her face.
âOf course. Thatâs what weâre here for, right? You are never a bother to us. Itâs a part of who you are. But itâs how you deal with it what matters, and you are trying. I see it.â
The orange emotion just stared at her in awe, and her smile grew wider.
âThank you, Ennui. You really are the best.â
âDonât mention it.â
Anxiety looked at Ennuiâs hand that was resting on her cheek and put her right hand on top of hers, and kissed her palm. Revealing a shocked glance and gasp from Ennui. Her cheeks now forming a dark blush herself.
âBut I will, ma chere.â
Ennui swiftly pulled her in her arms again embracing her. Anxiety wrapped her arms around Ennui as well and ran her fingers through her long hair. A couple minutes passed and Ennui looked down at Anxiety.
âAnxiety? Are you ready to try and go back to sleep?â
Anxiety yawned.
âYeahh. Iâm exhausted.â
âWe should get some sleep. We have to get up in a couple hours.â
âCan I please sleep with you tonight? I donât want this to end yet and I donât want to be alone.â Anxiety asked a little desperate in the end.
âOui, oui. Of course. Come, allons-y.â Ennui said in a caring tone, grabbing Anxietyâs hand. She led her to her bed, the others were still knocked out. Ennui climbed and scooted to her right side of her bed and laid down on her left side. Anxiety climbed afterwords and laid down next to Ennui, trying to give her space. This only made Ennui pull her closer, making Anxiety release a soft yelp and rested her head on her chest again. Ennuiâs arms wrapped around Anxiety and used one to yank the cover over them.
Anxiety yawned, her eyes heavy. Ennui smiled softly and kissed her forehead and the crown of her head gently.
âSleep now, chere. Everything will be okay. I will be here if you need me.â
Anxiety nodded and shut her eyes, soon breathing softly but not with fear, indicating she fell asleep. Ennui placed a final kiss on her forehead and rested her chin on Anxietyâs head.
âBonne nuit, mon amour.â Ennui whispered lovingly.
Ennui closed her eyes and the two emotions slept in each others embrace until Riley woke up. No one understood why Anxiety and Ennui were sleeping on the same bed but decided not to bring it up. Joy thought it was very sweet and couldnât stop talking about it for a bit during that morning.
(Been having inside out/inside out 2 brain rot for the past week. I canât stop looking, watching reading, content about it. Itâs genuinely an amazing franchise. Also anxiety and ennui have been on my mind lately, ennuiâs my fav lmao. I see the chemistry between these two. Iâm a little embarrassed (No pun intended) to share this and thought it was a bit out of character on ennuiâs part but reading over it so much I didnât think so much. ANYWAYS enjoy to my anxiety and ennui lovers!! ^ ^)
Theyâre the first two women Iâve ever written while writing LMAO
And I donât think I need to say but if thereâs gonna be any hate, leave âŒïž

Relationship(s): Riley Andersen + GN!Reader (both platonic and romantic)
Format: Headcanons + small stories
Genre: Fluff + A decent amount of angst
Warnings: Mentions of bullying, Inside out 1-2 movie spoilers, emetophobia, panic attacks, little oc insert other than that- none!
Authorâs notes: IVE BEEN WAITING FOR ONE OF THESE. AAAAAAAAAAHAHEHJEHAJAHSH. Guys, I love inside out 2, Iâm seeing it tomorrow again. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I made you a bit of a recluse in this, so iâm.. very sorry - Playlist recommendation (not mine):
Side note: Idyllic - extremely happy, peaceful, or picturesque.
Platonic:
Definitely one of your best friends.
Sheâs so sweet đ
I wanna say you met her shortly after she was introduced into your class, when she was 12. You probably moved to San Francisco as well, but probably from at a younger age- like 5 years old.
You learned earlier on to understand the environment and adjust to it (even with how different and altering it was to you). Youâre used to the same routine everyday, the same things everyday, and many things havenât changed since then. Youâve definitely had trouble with friends even after being here for so long, though, it doesnât matter- you were weird, at least to everyone around you. They never liked the fact you were.. primarily reserved. You were teased about it, nothing too severe, until it turned to bullying.
ItâsâŠhard. The idea of being alone for the rest of your years here in middle school and then being alone in high school as well because they remember the recluse you wereâ
Well, until the new student arrived.
Riley Andersen, a girl who moved here from Minnesota with parents.
..If Iâm being honest, it hurt to hear the pain within her voice after talking about her life in Minnesota, how she would play hockey from such a young age with her parents.
Though, it definitely took you much longer to actually talk to her, and go up to her. Youâd definitely give her longing glances, seeing how lonely she seemed. And you understand, youâre in that very same position.
When you did introduce yourself however, she seemed a bit aloof about the whole situation. And you were patient.
â..Is this seat taken?â The nervousness in your voice was obvious, even with how much you tried to mask it. Tried to control the shakiness of it as you stood next to the dull, wooden picnic table. The blonde, with her head in her hand slightly looked up at you, surveying you for a moment before resting her head once more.
â..No.â She quietly replied.
âDid you.. wanna sit here?-â
âYES!â ..Yes, if thatâs okay with you, of course!â
YOU EMBARRASSED YOURSELF. NONOJKOJOBO. GODDAMNIT. THIS IS NOT HOW THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO GOOOOOOOO.
âMake yourself comfortable.â You could definitely hear that she was at least attempting to be optimistic in her tone, which you silently appreciated.
Quickly sitting down, you placed your tray in front of you and attempted to find the most comfortable position to sit in.
â..So, you moved here- from Minnesota, right?â
âMhm.â
..Dry reply. But- thatâs okay! You understand why.
âItâs nice to know someone else whoâs similar to you. I moved here myself as well, though it was.. a few years ago now. Iâm sure youâll at the very least like it here.â
âOh- shoot, sorry um.. Iâm (___). Riley, right?â
â..Yeah. Riley Andersen.â
You didnât miss the small smile she gave you.
YOU HAVE ACQUIRED A NEW FRIEND LIFE-LONG FRIEND! :DD
Well- of course after some causal conversation about interests, hobbies, etc.
The two of you exchanged socials so you could keep in touch, and the two of you started talking more often during school and out of school, planning stuff for future hangouts and such.
It was genuinely nice to talk with her and get to know each otherâs interests, and your bullies at school seemed bewildered at the fact that youâd actually grown more confident to go out and make friends. Even if it was some new girl like Riley.
Though when she started distancing herself, giving dry responses such as: âK.â, âwtvâ, âlolâ, âbye.â The repetitiveness of this had gotten you worried to the point you couldnât even think of anything else but possibly losing your new friend. You just met her!
And this dryness eventually turned into ignorance on her end.
Of course you were going to be a bit of a worrywart over your friend, you had no idea what was going on in her headâ you just wanted to help her in any way possible, and the nagging feeling that was gnawing at you due to this was impossible to ignore any longer.
So, you texted Riley when you noticed she was online one day: âHi Riri! Iâm sorry for the sudden message, but Iâve taken note that youâve been leaving my messages on read for a bit now, and as much as I can understand wanting space from social platforms, but I would at least like to know if youâre okay. So, I wanted to request a video call or a meetup, so we can talk about everything going on, and you can speak your mind. I just want to talk to you, please.â
Apart of you wanted to wait for a message, but the other part of you wanted to close your laptop and hide in the corner of your room.
Though, you couldnât pick fast enough given the fact Riley had already started typing her reply- given the fact you could see that she was.
âCall, ig. Whenever.â
..You instantly called the moment you got the chance.
â..Riley?â You quietly spoke up shortly after your friend had picked up the call, the laptop resting in your lap as you stared at Riley through the screen.
Riley seemed more despondent than you had seen her before, as she avoided any eye contact with you. The way your heart felt like it was sinking to your stomach-
âRiley?â
âIâm fine, (___). Thatâs what this call is about, right?â She spoke so bluntly- you probably wouldâve thought you were talking to someone entirely different if you didnât see Rileyâs face, or recognize her voice youâd grown accustomed to.
âRiri- no, well- yes.. but thatâs not the only thing! I want to know if anythingâs bothering you. You know you can always tell me anything going on.â You interjected, shocked of the situation which was unfolding before you.
âOh yeah, right.â âŠShe rolled her eyes.
âIâm serious!â
âI can tell youâre lying to me!â The way she yelled at you, looking at the screen- the way her eyes were filled with such hateful vitriol made you physically recoil, eyes wide and mouth slightly agape. Did you do something to deserve this? Did you say something weird?? Maybe sheâs just going through something and is so pent up because of it! But- with the way of how this conversation is unravelling, you really donât think this is how this is gonna go.
With furrowed eyebrows, you frowned and surveyed her expression once more.
âYou donât understand whatâs going on. You could never! And itâs not that you would even care anyways.â Riley continued, looking away from the screen once more before she tossed down her laptop onto her bed.
You really had no idea where any of these ideas were coming from.
Have you just not been a good friend? Youâve tried. Youâve tried so hard to be kind and courteous with your friend, youâve tried so hard to genuinely help her, but it seems like all of your efforts are going to waste. Perhaps you didnât try as hard as you thought in order to be a good enough friend who was worth hanging around with, worthy of love and being able to not beg for attention or seem needy.
Maybe they were right.
That youâre better off without any friends, that nobody would want to be your friend anyway.
You felt the tears welling up in your eyes.
â..Whatever.â
âRiley- wait-â
She closed her laptop, ending the call.
âŠwhat do you do now.
Thereâs no way to describe the next few hours during those moments.
You were up in your room, pacing, feeling a growing headache starting to blossom like a poisonous flower of sorts.
Nothing yet everything was going through your head at the same time, did she hate you? Was she going to drop you? What if you never see her again?? Would she hate your guts and actually try to humiliate you the next time you see her during school, or any other time?
Your breath hitches at the thought and you move yourself back up against a wall. Your parents werenât home, theyâre out probably galavanting around. It felt like blood was pounding through your ears, the feeling of a heart became unbearable and uncomfortable from the fact it was beating so fast, thudding against your chest. Your back slid against the wall as you curled up into a ball, hands shaking- entire body trembling. It just continued to get worse, whatever this was, as your vision became disfigured and distorted, as if you were looking through a fish-eye lens. You swear you felt your chest feel tighten, coupled with the fact it felt like bile was coming up your throat.
It felt disgusting.
All of it, you felt so sweaty, you felt filthy.
This is pathetic. (You donât understand whatâs happening.)
But you canât move your body. It feels so stiff. The feeling of cotton in your mouth making you unable to speak, the heavy sensation of your limbs, the way the lights are too bright for your eyes now- it feels like the room os starting to spin, with the walls closing in, and the ceiling pressing down. You can't breathe anymore. You can't even scream as much as you wanted to at this moment.
The scariest thing about whateverâs happening still stands:
You have absolutely no clue what to do.
It makes you feel powerless. Weak. Pathetic and worthless.
Just like it does with the events that just unfolded with Riley.
And it makes you too tired.
Too tired to keep yourself awake.
Desperately, you find yourself trying to find some source of comforting within the rising heat of your own body, even with whatâs happening. The tiredness begins to wash over, even with all of these feelings still present, and it genuinely makes you feel worse than it should. Everything about this feels wrong. You should be able to handle this- not freak out over it.
But you canât help it.
You donât know what else to do.
. . .
You donât know how long you were passed out for.
But you realized that youâre on your bed right away. You found yourself turning on your lamp, before hastily starting to look around for a moment, around for your laptop. The moment you found it, you opened it, the time was the first thing you saw on the screen.
1 am.
You passed out for 2 hours.
Your parents mustâve come home and put you in your bed. Theres still lingering effects from whatever happened earlier, like a throbbing headache- and your eyes are incredibly dry, along with your throat.
It takes you a while before you slowly close your laptop, and shakily arise from your spot on your bed, finding yourself going downstairs to get a snack and a drink. Everything felt.. fuzzy, in a way you canât describe. Derealization is a better way to describe it.
In languid movements, you grabbed a cold water bottle from the fridge, and decided to make yourself some simple microwaveable ramen.
Sitting there at the dinner table was awkward.
It felt lonely.
Depressing, even.
You attempt to distract yourself by drinking your water and focusing your attention on the outside sky, and the time on microwave.
You made sure you stopped it before the alarm went off.
Slowly eating, just.. wanted to not think about everything going wrong.
But you couldnât stop it. You couldnât do anything. You only made things worse, no?
Nothing else eventful happened during your time downstairs, and you finished up your food rather quickly, before cleaning up after yourself. You took your plastic water bottle with you, back to your room. Closing the door behind you, you placed the water bottle down on your nightstand before getting back into bed, the dim lighting allowing you to focus on your computer screen better.
A new message alert popped up on the screen.
It didnât say who it was from, as you were just about to put in the password. The message left as fast as it appeared, and you barely saw it.
âŠ
You quickly typed in your password, the screen resuming back to your chat logs with Riley. Where the new message was. You scrolled down, and saw the lengthy message in its entirety.
â(__), I know youâre probably asleep right now, but I know youâll get this message when you wake up and I canât get rid the guilt off of my consciousness because Iâve been thinking all about it ever since the call, but Iâm so sorry about earlier. I didnât mean to be so rude, or accuse you of anything. That wasnât right of me. I have not been going through an easy time, and I donât wanna divulge that all to you right now, but perhaps in the future when Iâm not so tired and emotional? But, I understand that youâre going to be upset with me over the situation, and may no longer want to be friends with me. If you do, I wonât hold it against you. I just hope you can forgive me eventually.â
You could feel more tears well up in your eyes.
Riley was currently offline, though. She probably went to sleep.
But you wouldnât just not leave her without a response. So, you got to typing quickly.
âHey, itâs okay, Riri! I understand. Thereâs absolutely no way I would leave you as a friend, you mean so much to me that I donât think I can believe a future without you being there as my first friend. Of course we can always talk about it later, but donât feel pressured to do so. Iâll let you know again that I wonât pry information out of you, Iâll only be there to comfort you in anyway I can! Youâre my best friend, Riri. I care so much about you, okay? Never be scared to tell me anything. (Sorry for the fact this is really short, I am so tired and have a headache- lol.)â
You two eventually talked about the whole ordeal eventually.
Overall, you two are inseparable!
Now, if weâre going to time-skip a bit to now where youâre also friends with Bree and Grace, youâre all still inseparable.
Maybe you play hockey- maybe you donât, and play a different ice sport (ie: Ice Skating).
Nevertheless, youâre all incredibly good friends. You schedule hangouts as often as you can, understand each other, open up to each other, learn interests and hobbies youâre all interested. You enjoy each otherâs company.
Bree is a great listener, and she actually sometimes will partake in some of your hobbies with you while youâre also doing them, even if she has no idea what it is. Like, if youâre drawing, sheâd grab her own sketchbook and start drawing herself! (Though, neither of your drawings may not be good, you appreciate it). If you do actually play in a different sport, such as Ice Skating, youâd probably try and teach her some different moves- though sheâd fail miserably. Sheâs at least trying, and thatâs what you appreciate! Silent time with her is something you also enjoy having with her, because sheâs one of the most comfortable people to be with (no offense to the others).
Grace is probably one of the funniest people in the group (not that the other two arenât funny, its just that sheâs so out of pocket at random points that itâs so perplexing yet, hilarious). You all could be silent for a moment while eating something, and then she says one of the most BEWILDERING things ever in human history. It shocks all of you to the CORE. (Donât lie, we all have this one friend). If you tried showing her some moves in Ice Skating, sheâd probably get some right. Though ultimately, sheâd be decently stiff and fail in the end. But failure is a learning stone, not something to look down upon! Sheâs your favorite person to be around if you wanna get your hair braided or laugh so hard you canât breathe.
Now, back to Riley. Even with Grace and Bree, you two still hold the closest relationship, given your guyâs background, you two talk the most to each other. Youâll blabber something about one of your interests, and sheâll add onto it, and then itâll be a back and forth of questions from her and answers along with fun facts from you. You even got her into doing some of your hobbies from time to time! If you were to show her some moves in Ice Skating, sheâd just admire. SHE WOULD NEVER DO IT. She would be too anxious, and freak out before even doing anything, so she just gives you a thumbs up. Though, if you implored a bit, sheâd definitely give in and absolutely FAIL. (None of these girls know how to Ice Skate). Nevertheless, sheâs one of your favorite people overall, and you care about her tons.
Now if we fast forward even more towards the end of the Inside out 2 movie, to where Val and her friends come into play..
Val is a gentle, yet firm person. Even with the age gap, you both are stille good friends and care for each other. Sheâs more like a mother figure to you, but still. You two managed to find a few hobbies the both of you enjoy that you both partake in whenever you can/are available, to which you both take great delight and joy in. Both because you enjoy each others company, but because you can relax and donât have to worry about conversation, because if you/her want it to be silent- itâs comforting, but if you/her wish to engage in lighthearted banter about anything in general, it feels natural and genuine. Not forced, like you two have to keep talking, but that if you want to, you can! If you tried to show her any Ice-Skating moves, sheâd definitely be the best at accuracy and skill. What can I say, sheâs a woman of many talents! (She still fails). The best person if you need someone to go talk to. #ibelieveintherapistfriendvalortiz.
Romantic:
Yk this girl is so anxious.
I feel like her love language is acts of service. Ngl.
Taking everything from the platonic area as a prequel to this, she definitely knew she had a crush on you the moment she actually started seeing so many things about you that she hadnât noticed before or really taken attention to: Your smile seemed much more genuine, your eyes had this small shone to them she originally didnât see, the way you were by her side when she asked to console her- rubbing her back in circular motions, hugging her firmly yet softly.
âŠ.WHAT IS HAPPENING. HELP. WHAT DOES SHE DO???
WHAT IS THIS FEELING.
Amia is behind the console, and accidentally made her so confused with this sudden romantic attraction. (IM SORRY, I WANTED TO HAVE AN EXCUSE TO BRING HER UP).
She definitely starts trying to get closer to you as possible, scheduling more private hangouts for just the two of you- such as picnics, hangouts at her house. And she would use the fact that Grace and Bree wouldnât be able to make it to her house at the time to her advantage/as an excuse.
Though, the downside is the fact sheâs too anxious to even speak to you half of the time. Too anxious to genuinely do anything- even get closer like she originally intending.
..She eventually asked her parents for some advice. Which, may or may have not been a good idea.
Even with that, they still did help in their own way.
So the next time you went to leave your house for whatever, youâd discover a letter at your doorstep. The next day after that, flowers and chocolates. Though they werenât expensive gifts, they were something.
You noticed that Riley actually started doing things for you before you even asked. You were about to ask her for a glass of water whole the two of you were relaxing at either her or your house, and sheâs already handing the glass. You were about to ask her to pass her one of the ingredients you needed while cooking, and sheâs already placed it into your hand. Trying to open the door? She already opened it for you, about to leave? Sheâs got your bag for you before you leave, full of everything you could needed. Itâs gotten to the point where youâre actually a bit scared of her intuition.
Perhaps you may have had a crush on her too? Who knows. You decide, after all.
Itâs.. hard to pinpoint when this whole ordeal started unraveling, but nevertheless- you felt very⊠odd at first. Why was she doing all of this for you? A part of you wanted to say that it was all just her being extra friendly on accident and that it meant nothing- but another part of you thought differently.
But the idea of someone having a crush on you felt absolutely and utterly absurd, ridiculous, and incredulous!
You two are just friends! (Just friends.. okay, right/sarc).
She would.. never think of you in romantic sense, thereâs just no possible way. (De Nile is a river in EgyptđŁïžđŁïžđŁïžđŁïžâŒïžâŒïžâŒïž/ref).
(OMFG I NEED TO STOP. IM GIGGLING TOO MUCH AND BEING IMMATURE. But itâs silly).
Nevertheless, you just.. cannot accept it as true. Itâs just some actions, itâs nothing that serious! Youâre over-analyzing and overthinking it! Stop thinking like that!
..But it doesnât go away. The itching sensation in the back of your brain never leaves. Youâve started to think about it 24/7, and as much as you try to push it down and say youâre overreacting, itâs still there- even diminutively. Itâs. Always. There.
With the more time you spend trying to rid of the suspicion and feeling, youâve started noticing little things about Riley yourself: The way she looks at you just a little longer than anyone else with a look in her eyes that is indescribable, the way she waits for you at the door as you pick up your phone and holds it open for you, the way she leans closer to you whenever watching any movie- and perhaps in a too intimate way. Like, she gets too close and rests her head on your shoulder, nuzzling herself into your neck ever so subtly.
..I think itâs safe to say youâre getting attracted to her.
ESPECIALLY WHEN SHEâS PLAYING AT A HOCKEY GAME AND SHE WALKS UP TO YOU LOOKING ALL PRETTY, WITH THE WAY THE SUN REFLECTS OFF OF HER SLIGHTLY DAMPENED HAIR-
âŠ
Yeah, yeah you are.
Youâre blushing so hard at the realization of what the hell is happening right now. And youâre way too nervous to tell her anything. You even found out she was the one who left those small gifts at your doorstep. How?
Well..
âIâll go get us some snacks from downstairs, âll be right back!â Rileyâs voice sounded out, and you looked up from her sketchbook youâd been using with her permission!with a small smile on your face as you nodded in understanding, before she rather quickly shuffled out of the door and downstairs. You went back to doodling on the sketchbook.
You were just going to pay attention to what you were going to draw next, you saw a small piece of paper sticking out on another page.
..you should not be prying- but, perhaps she drew something!
The excitement filled you as you flipped to the page, where you were meet with no drawing of any kind. But instead, there was a note which was ripped. It was written rather quickly, and the confusion of what you were seeing quickly filled you. But looking at the first few lines had you shocked and blushing like crazy.
âI had given them a few gifts to leave on their doorstep like my parents..â
Instantly, you closed the sketchbook all together, head racing with so many thoughts at the same time.
She was the one who left those gifts?âŠ
You couldnât believe it, at all.
Perhaps it was for a different person? (But it was too similar).
What the hell were you supposed to do now????
Wait for some sort of date from her?
Or ask her out yourself?
Both would be.. nerve wracking, but you knew you had to make a move soon, or you probably would never have another chances. You felt scared, more nervous than you had ever before in your life, but you seriously thought that there was going to be no other option.
You had to do it sooner rather than later, in fear of what would happen.
Especially with the possibility of ruining your relationship, youâd take the risk. For the both of you. This way, you could learn if she was truly being more friendly to you for some reason or for none at all and she simply felt like it.
But then another problem came up:
You had absolutely zero idea on how to ask someone out.
..what do you do now.
Well, you at the very least- knew it had to be romantic. Something genuine. None of that faux stuff!
So, you decided on a rather fancy picnic, that appeared to be more of a tea party instead of a small picnic with the fact that you wanted it to be much more differentâŠ
There was a large glass table with an umbrella stuck in the middle and unfolded as to keep those safe from the bright sunlight, delicately covered with an embroidered lace cloth.
Upon the table, there are an array of delectable snacks and drinks, carefully arranged. Elegant porcelain teapots, each filled with a different fragrant tea, sat alongside dainty teacups with gold-rimmed edges. Platters of finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam.
(You donât remember how long this took, given you used old antiques and cleaned them so many times- just in case, and made all of these foods yourself. You borrowed the fancy table from your garage and cleaned it down, given it hadnât been used in years, and brought some simple- yet fancy looking chairs from your house as well).
And you spent quite a bit making sure the letter you sent to Riley was perfect.
You were sat in one of the chairs, dressed in one of your most fancy outfits. You didnât want to look foolish during this, after all- you made it all look this fancy for a reason!
It was a nice day out today, given that it wasnât very cold or too warm to be uncomfortable. The sun was on the horizon, and the moon was rising as the stars started shining within the soft colors of pink and orange in the sky. Honestly, it felt more like a dream that this was happening.
And the way youâre genuinely panicking internally-
â(___)?â You heard someone speak up, and you turned your head to look at..
Riley, who was in her fanciest dress, you noted., Though you know sheâs not one to dress so formal unless itâs an important event. The dress was white, right above her ankles with a floral design embroidered into it. Even on the slightly puffy sleeves. Though, she was still wearing her converse, with plain white socks to match. Her hair was styled into topsy tail ponytail from what you could see, and a flower clip in her hair.
âWhy, donât look rather ravishing!â You immediately said without another thought, and she blushed at the remark.
âThank you- you look great yourself!â She nervously laughed while smiling, blush growing on her cheeks. A moment of silence passed between you two, before you spoke again.
âWell donât just stand there, come sit with me.â Riley instantly became stiff, before nodding and scampering on over to the empty seat in front of you. You gave a lighthearted laugh before subconsciously wiping your hands down the sides of your outer garments.
The two of you stayed in somewhat awkward silence before striking up conversation with one another, talking about the things you did- not including anything.. personal (fangirling over one another) But, instead things you werenât together for, like actives you did with family, or games/practice you had. Riley even commented on how well made and delicious the food tasted, which made you blush HARD. You were so giddy, yet so anxious at the same time- you felt the need to throw up.
âThanks again for inviting me.â Riley spoke again before taking another bite of her macaroon, as you simply nodded. Youâd found yourself going quiet as you continued to eat your food and sip upon your favorite drink the fancy, porcelain tea cup.
..how were you going to confess your feelings to her after she finds the little note stored in one of the macaroon? How will she react? Will you be able to speak fast enough? Will she accept this, or hate you for the rest of your time together as friends???
Your body was tense as you thought of all the horrible ways this conversation could go after she-
âOh! Cool, some of them have little fortunes- like fortune cookies!â CURSES.
Rileyâs face changed from one of joy, to one of perplexity as she read the small piece of paper, before looking up at you with the same look.
She could definitely see how pink your cheeks were.
REACT, IDIOT, YOU LOOK LIKE AN IMBECILE FOR JUST SITTING THERE!
â..(___)-â
âRiley Andersen, will you be my girlfriend!!?â You slapped your hands over your mouth the moment you said that. The words spill from your mouth like word vomit so quickly you had no time to react while you were saying it, only afterwards did you truly realize what you did.
Her mouth went agape, blinking a few times as she simply stared at you in shock, before her expression changed to a softer one and smiling wide.
âOf course.â
Now, isnât that banal?
But itâs the way that it happened.
(Side note: youâll never get to know what the slip of paper said đ«¶đ)
Nah it was just some rhyming, and cringey poem that would continue with you saying aloud âRiley Andersen, will you be my girlfriend?â
You two are both very awkward to show each other any sort of affection in public, or in private at first. But; it started with Riley slowly- trying (and, failing) to be subtle, holding your hand in public.
Grace and Bree are the first two people you three told about your relationship after you got together the other day. Val being the third.
The more comfortable you get, the more you tell other people, like Rileyâs Parents.
They definitely would take you to those Pride parades to show their support, ik it. Prove me wrong rn.
Nevertheless, all of them are incredibly supporting of your relationship!
The more comfortable you two get in the relationship, the emotional and touchy you get (not in that way đ€š).
Like, more hugs (back-hugs, random hugs, etc) between you two, more cheek/forehead kisses, cuddling for the first time, first time kiss, etc. The whole spiel.
Now⊠on the topic of the first kiss..
It happened at her house while it was just the two of you. Her parents were off at their jobs, and it was summer break. How it happened is.. decently embarrassing. She was leaning in to give you a cheek kiss, until you turned your head in her direction, purely for the reason you were going to ask her a question. It wasnât until your lips were both connected did you realize what was going on.
Safe to say that both of you were blushing messes.
Grace and Bree tease you often about your relationship, not in a rude way- ofc, but in a friendly way. Val, gives small remarks from time to time, but they donât mean anything rude by it!
Your relationship overall is pretty healthy, even with some small arguments here and there, and might even struggle with some miscommunication.
Your guyâs relationship though has its ups and downs, like any other, but youâll always try your best.
For Riley.
Your wonderful girlfriend <3.
. . .
âAll weâve been able to think about is (___) this entire week!â Disgust exclaimed, not necessarily in a bad way, but moreover in a.. realization kind of way. Looking down at the console, which was a deep pink color.
âIsnât it wonderful!? (___) is so lovely⊠WE COULD THINK ABOUT THEM EVERYDAY from now on! Theyâre so kind, sweet, beautiful, and so much more!!â Amia beamed happily while clasping her hands together.
âSays the Love Emotion..â Fear remarked quietly to himself, before sipping his tea. That quickly earned a glare from her, which had him running off in a hurry.
âItâs good though! It proves weâre a genuine partner, and that weâre truly smitten with them!â Joy added, ruffling Amiaâs hair as the smaller emotion giggled.
â..They can never be boring, you know?â Ennui, leisurely laid on the couch, said. Laughing a bit.
âBUT, What if they think weâre being too much of an overbearing partner though!?â Anxiety yelped aloud, jumping out of her âspecialâ chair to run up to the console, as if looking for tanything that could be a sign or anything possibly wrong. That only lasted for a moment before she backed away, flapping her hands and pacing around.
Joy stared for a second, smile dropping before sighing, shaking her head in disapproval and a softer expression taking over.
âThey could never! They love us, Anxiety. Theyâre being genuine. Just look at Riley and (___) together right now.â The emotionâs hands rested upon Anxietyâs shoulders, gently leading them towards the console to stare at what was happening with Riley at this very moment.
Riley and (___) were happy with their current circumstance. Genuinely contempt. They were currently star gazing in a nearby park, the moonlightâs soft rays of light hitting the coupleâs faces, as if it were a true person- caressing their faces ever so gently. Their hands intertwined, and focused on each other, along with the stars to witness their own date. They really could stay like this forever, leisurely sitting in the lush grass near the jagged rocks of the lake to which the light was reflecting off of against the moving waves.
(___) rested their head upon Rileyâs shoulder, eyes slowly closing from the tiredness thatâd accumulated over the day. And hesitantly, she leaned her head atop of yours.
They were really here. It wasnât just some wild and crazy dream that dream productions crafted, but instead it was reality, the meticulous reality that now Riley and (___) live with.
It really was idyllic.
This took so long⊠i can confirm because my phone is lagging so much while typing all of this + my Acheron!reader.

âSpeaking of, that does raise one more question.â Disgust said. âWhat?â Joy asked. âIf youâre right and Anxiety is also somehowâŠexpecting, whoâs the other parent?â Oh. Oh. Once again, Anxiety felt the attention being turned to her and she wanted nothing more than to sink into the ground and never come out again. They clearly waited for an answer, but how was she supposed to give one? Her gaze switched between Ennui, Fear and Joy. âI..I donât knowâŠâ Link to story: https://archiveofourown.org/works/59212855/chapters/150995167

[BETA HAS BEEN FOUND]
I wrote Anxiety x Fear fanfic, though it doesnât really have its main focus on the romantic relationship - there are only slight hints. Mostly itâs focused on calm conversations and attempts in helping each other to fight nightmares. So the rating is G and it is closer to Gen than to F/M.
Iâm looking for a Beta reader and editor because English is not my first language. My skills are good enough to translate it to English on my own, but it will still require some polishing from a native speaker so there wonât be any big issues left. You donât have to know another language, youâll just need to check and edit the already translated text. So if English is your first language, you have an experience in writing and are willing to help â Iâll be glad to accept it! You can contact me through DMs here or text me directly in Discord: @nastyaklimova
Thanks for your attention!

Night Shift - An Inside Out 2 One-Shot
AN: I recently saw Inside Out 2 and loved it a lot! Feeling inspired, I wrote a one-shot fanfic focusing on my favorite characters, Fear and Anxiety.
Plot: While Fear is on Dream Duty, he finds that Anxiety is still awake and is determined to help her.
Relationship Tags: Fear & Anxiety, Fear/Anxiety
Tags: Fluff, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Humor, Mutual Pining

On the main floor of Headquarters, nine colorful emotions gathered around the console. It was nighttime and after a busy day, their shift was coming to a close. The cool darkness of Rileyâs room faded to black as the teen drifted off to sleep, causing the screen to turn off.Â
âAnd thatâs a wrap,â Joy cheerfully declared. âGood work, everyone!âÂ
The other eight emotions applauded as another great day finally ended. It had been about two months since the school year started, and three months since the five new emotions arrived. Though there had been some infighting at the beginning between the newcomers and the old guard, the ten of them already settled into a comfortable routine as nine of them operated the console with Nostalgia sneaking in now and again to reminisce over a recent memory.Â
âFear, youâre in charge of dream duty tonight.â Joy reminded.Â
Though Fear suppressed the urge to roll his eyes, he refused to completely hide his disdain of dream duty. âAye aye, Joy,â Fear sarcastically responded with a salute.
âThatâs what I like to hear,â Joy responded, brushing aside the contemptuous tone. She leaned in and gave Fear a high five. Even he couldnât help but smile at her infectious enthusiasm. She then turned her attention to the rest of the group. âAs for everyone else, letâs get some shut-eye!âÂ
âYeah!â Anger agreed. He moved over to Joy and the two shared a high-five before walking off together.
Fear smiled as he watched his friends/coworkers make their way to the bedroom. Sadness and Embarrassment walked together, appreciating each otherâs company. Envy bounced over to Disgust while Anxiety and Ennui trailed behind as the latter lethargically pushed herself across the floor like the bored noodle that she was.Â
âGood night Fear,â the emotions told him in near unison.Â
âGood night everybody.â Fear replied.Â
Once everyone left the main floor, he let out an exasperated sigh. He dreaded dream duty. Not because he was scared of the dreams, far from it. But because the dreams themselves were so insipid.Â
The scenarios were ludicrous, the plotlines were structured terribly, and the dialogue was laughable. But it was part of the job and he had no choice. But just because he had to endure dream duty didn't mean he couldn't have a little fun on the night shift.Â
Fear ventured in the kitchen to gather his nourishment of choice for the night. He made himself a fresh cup of coffee with cream and sugar substitute and grabbed a box of crackers from the cabinet. After placing the bowl of crackers on a separate chair, the purple emotion smiled contentedly as he relaxed in his seat. He was going to need all the comfort he could get for whatever ridiculous dream he would be forced to watch.Â
Fear adjusted his spot on the chair, propped his legs on the console, and crossed them. Taking a swig of his coffee, he glanced at the screen. âAlright, what trainwreck of a dream do we have in store for tonight?âÂ
The screen projection turned on to reveal an abandoned grocery store. From Rileyâs perspective, she scanned her surroundings. The green and white tiled floors were particularly dirty and a synth-pop song muffled from the loudspeakers. She then made her way through the pasta aisle.Â
âThe grocery store, seriously?â Fear groused. He was used to dreams taking place in school or a haunted house, but his suspension of disbelief was already broken. âSo whatâs the big set piece this time? Haunted pasta sauce?âÂ
Suddenly, a metal clang rang out. Riley turned around to find a can of Chef Boyardeeâs on the floor. After a moment of silence, the can started to chase her around. Fear cocked his brow. Though he was thoroughly unimpressed with this dream scenario, he still felt a small spark of satisfaction in predicting the storyline.Â
âEh, close enough.â Fear shrugged his shoulders, taking another sip of his coffee.Â
He continued to heckle at the screen as the dream played out on the screen. The rolling can of cheap pasta escalated into a swarm of floating shopping lists and a fleet of shopping carts.Â
âAre they even trying anymore?â He riffed with a disbelieving laugh.Â
A sudden vibration sound reached his ears. He elicited a shriek as he jolted in his seat. The curled nerve on top of his head stood as straight as a lightning rod. Fear exhaled. No one else should be up at this time of night, and he was certain that Nostalgia would not make this much noise when intruding on the main floor. The only possible source for the vibration was the special chair Joy brought for Anxiety after Riley returned from Hockey Camp-
Fear blinked in realization. He slowly swiveled his seat to find Anxiety, donned in her orange-and-white striped pajama gown and green slippers, lying down in her special chair. She wore a perturbed expression as her eyes were glued to the ceiling. There was no doubt that she was anxious over something.Â
âAnxiety?â Fear asked.Â
Anxietyâs eyes widened like a deer in headlights at the sound of her name. The moment she stared at Fear she began to panic. She banged the off button with her fist, stopping the vibrations. In great haste, she adjusted the seat to an upright position. Bolting out of the chair, she cautiously approached Fear, keeping her hands clasped together as she twisted her arms about.Â
âIâm so, so sorry Fear,â Anxiety fervently apologized. âI didnât mean to interrupt your dream duty. I want to go to sleep, but I canât because Iâm so worried about Rileyâs Spanish test. I want to help her a-and Iâve been debating on whether she should study a little bit more or not.â
Fear empathetically gazed at Anxiety. He knew what it was like to feel unprepared in the face of uncertainty. But it was both his and Anxietyâs obligation to do their part to keep Riley on her toes for the things she can and cannot see. They were kindred spirits in that regard. They both played their part throughout the week to keep Riley in check as she studied for the big test. Earlier in the day, she spent three hours studying; two hours at the public library, thirty minutes before dinner, and thirty minutes before starting her bedtime routine. Fear was confident that Riley had a strong handle on the material and that she could ace the test. He had hoped that Anxiety felt a similar level of confidence as well. But as stared at Anxiety, he could tell that her mind was plagued with varying âwhat ifâ outcomes of what could happen if Riley did poorly on the test. But Anxiety tended to focus on the worst-case scenarios, which only fueled her uneasiness.Â
Anxiety began to pace around the room. âIf she doesnât pass the test, then this might snowball into horrific consequences for her academic future! Or her future in general!âÂ
Fearâs heart broke as he watched her get caught up in her whirlwind of worries. Now he felt compelled to help her out. Though part of him feared that he would say the wrong thing or make things worse, he still could not stand by and watch Anxiety suffer.Â
He got up from his seat and cautiously approached her from behind. âHey Anxiety,â he gently tapped her shoulder.Â
Anxiety jumped a little at the soft touch. Fear felt a moment of apprehension, feeling that he made a miscalculated move. âSorry!â He apologized. But when she turned around, her expression was a mix of somberness and yearning.
Fear mustered the courage to keep going. He placed his hand on her shoulder once more, thankful that she welcomed the gesture. âI understand your concern, and you did your best to help Riley stay on track for her upcoming test, but she needs to get a good nightâs rest for tomorrow and so do you.â
âI know, I know,â Anxiety replied hastily. âBut itâs just that I feel so overwhelmed,â she admitted as she began to tear up. âI want to help Riley do the best she can, but I donât want to overdo it and hurt her again,â her voice began to crack.Â
Fear sadly stared at Anxiety, even feeling himself tear up a little at how broken she sounded. âCome here,â he said softly. Opening his arms, he enveloped her in an embrace.Â
He gently rubbed her back in a soothing motion, hoping it would help. To his surprise, he felt Anxiety wrapping her arms around him, tightening the hug. She elicited a choked sob before burying her face into his chest.Â
Fear continued to embrace Anxiety as she dispelled her tears. He tried to come up with any comforting words, but he was drawing a blank. But then he decided it would be best to show that he cared through his comforting actions.
Soon enough, Anxietyâs heavy breathing eventually evened out and the tears lessened. She loosened her hold around Fear and slowly released herself from the embrace. Anxiety looked up at Fear, her green eyes now puffy.Â
âDo you feel a little better now?â Fear gently asked.Â
Anxiety nodded her head. âYeah,â she confirmed, giving him a little smile.Â
Fear smiled back at her, glad to hear that she was improving. âDo you want to talk about some potential solutions for Rileyâs studying?â He inquired.Â
Anxiety scrubbed the last of her tears from her eyes. âBut what about dream duty?âÂ
They looked over to the screen only to find Riley watching a group of leotard-clad dancers resembling cats performing an elaborately choreographed dance number.Â
âWell that took a bizarre turn,â Fear commented. He looked back at Anxiety and shrugged his shoulders. âEh, it looks like the dream can take care of itself. You, on the other hand, are far more important.â
Anxiety smiled softly at the affirming words. Fear motioned over to her special chair. âCome on, letâs take a seat,â he said, giving her a gentle pat on the back. He sprinted over to his chair and dragged it over to meet with Anxiety who returned to her special chair.Â
Fear placed the chair across from Anxiety so they could talk face-to-face and sat down. âYouâre good at coming up with plans, Anxiety,â he complimented, matching his hands together and pointing them at her. âSo what do you think Riley could do in the morning to ensure that sheâll do great on her test?âÂ
Anxiety moved her feet back and forth as she gazed at the floor. After a moment of pondering, she looked up at Fear. âWellâŠshe could review the study guide on the car ride to school,â she began.Â
âA most wise course of action,â Fear confirmed. Â
âAnd she can read through it once more during homeroom,â Anxiety continued, sounding more confident. âOh! And after the test, she can get a head start on her rough draft for the English essay thatâs due in two weeks!âÂ
Fearâs face lit up as he snapped his fingers. âNow that sounds like a surefire plan for success!âÂ
Anxietyâs shoulders relaxed. âIt feels good to have a plan.âÂ
Fear smiled back. âIt does,â he agreed.Â
But the smile vanished from her face, appearing apprehensive once more. Fear concernedly stared at her. âWhatâs wrong?âÂ
Anxiety took a deep breath. She placed her hand on her other arm and rubbed it soothingly. âIâmâŠIâm sorry for interrupting your dream duty and burdening you with my problems.âÂ
âAnxiety, you have nothing to apologize for,â Fear reassured her as he got up from his seat and moved closer to her. He knelt by her side. âAnd please donât refer to yourself as a burden because you are a valuable member of the team.â Brushing aside his fears, he gently took her hand into his own. âBut if you ever need someone to talk to, you can always come to me.â He said with conviction, despite his cheeks turning a darker shade of purple. âI care about you a lot and I want to help you. So if you feel overwhelmed, you can come to me and weâll work through it together.âÂ
Anxiety looked at Fearâs hand. Though her cheeks heated up from the surprising gesture, she savored the comfort he provided her with. She threaded her fingers in between his and gave it a gentle squeeze before smiling back at him.Â
âThanks, Fear,â Anxiety said softly. âFor everything.âÂ
Fear looked down at âIâm happy to help,â he confirmed.Â
âSo do you mind if I camp out on my special chair for the night?â Anxiety inquired.Â
âBe my guest,â Fear replied. He then thought of an idea that could help Anxiety fall asleep faster.Â
âYou make yourself comfortable, Iâll be right back,â he gently told her while patting her hand before releasing it from his grasp.Â
Fear sprinted away from the main floor with a clear mission. He approached the bedroom and stealthily entered inside. Careful not to make any noise, he crept over to his bed and grabbed the essentials: a blanket, his favorite nightlight of the nine that illuminated his sleeping quarters, and his beloved teddy bear. With the items bundled in his arms, he returned to the control room, where Anxiety had already lit her lavender-scented candles and retrieved her sleep headphones.Â
Fear approached Anxiety with the precious cargo. He clutched the star nightlight and his teddy bear to his chest as he gathered the soft blanket before offering it to Anxiety. She graciously accepted the blanket and placed it over herself.Â
After plugging the nightlight on the wall, Fear approached her with the teddy bear. âI normally donât do this, but tonight I shall bestow you with my nighttime companion.â He handed the teddy bear over to her.Â
Anxiety gazed at the adorable plush bear in adoration. âI will protect this precious creature with my life!â She declared.Â
âI hope that wonât be the case, but I commend the dedication,â Fear noted.Â
Fear went over to dim the lights and returned to the console. âIâll do my best to keep my riffing to a minimum and use my indoor voice,â he told her as he brought his chair back to the console.Â
âThank you Fear,â Anxiety said as she reclined the chair backward.Â
âYouâre welcome,â Fear replied before turning his attention to the screen.Â
He continued to monitor the dream and was increasingly baffled by the story choices. Out of curiosity, Fear looked behind to find Anxiety fast asleep, clutching the teddy bear in her arms. She looked so calm and soâŠbeautiful.
He smiled sweetly at her as the nerve on his head turned into the shape of a heart. Taking his hand, Fear pressed it to his lips and blew a kiss to Anxiety. âSweet dreams, Anxiety.âÂ
To his surprise, he caught Anxietyâs lips curving into a small smile.Â
The soft smile stayed on Fear's face as he swiveled the chair around to continue his job. Though the screen played out the ridiculous dream, the sight of Anxiety peacefully sleeping replayed in his head. He took another sip of his tea and smiled at the lovely sight. Â
----------------
Anxiety opened her eyes to find herself on the special chair. She looked down to find Fearâs precious teddy bear safely tucked in her arms. She instinctively hugged the bear while making a note to acquire her own emotional support plushie.Â
She looked over to see Fear propping himself up on the console, no doubt bored out of his mind from the mediocre dream. Anxiety cradled the bear in her arms as she stared at her kind coworker. Fear did so much for her last night and she wanted to return the favor.Â
Gathering the blanket and teddy bear, the orange emotion took off her sleeping headphones and slinked off her special chair. Once she stood up, she grabbed the nightlight and discreetly pulled it off the electrical socket. With Fearâs possessions bundled in her arms, Anxiety tiptoed away from the main floor.Â
She arrived at the sleeping quarters as the other emotions, save for Joy, were still in their slumber. Anxiety quietly moved over to Fearâs bunk. She plugged his favorite nightlight back into the outlet. Adjusting his pillow, she placed his teddy bear in place and tucked it in with his blanket. Smiling at her handiwork, she gave the teddy bear a couple of head pats before heading off to her bunk.Â
Anxiety quickly gathered her clothes from her drawer. She moved into the closet, got herself dressed, and made her way over to the kitchen.Â
As soon as she approached the doorway, she found a table filled with plates and a buffet of breakfast foods. Joy happily prepared scrambled eggs by the stove. The cheerful emotion turned around to find Anxiety standing by the doorway and smiled.Â
âOh, there you are, Anxiety!â Joy said sweetly as she scrapped the scrambled eggs onto a large plate. âI noticed that you werenât in your bed and got worried.âÂ
âSorry about that,â Fear replied as she cradled her hands together. âI had a little trouble falling asleep, but I moved over to the special chair.âÂ
Joy looked relieved. âThatâs good. And Fearâs dream duty didnât distract you?âÂ
âNo, not at all!â Anxiety defended as she frantically waved her hands. âFear actually helped me out last night by talking to me and being there for me when I needed it most.â She clasped her hands together. âAnd I want to do something nice for him.âÂ
Joy smiled, glad to learn that Fear stepped up and helped Anxiety through her troubles and even more satisfied that Anxiety wanted to do something kind for him to show her gratitude. âWell, thatâs very sweet of you, Anxiety,â She noted.Â
Anxiety moved into the kitchen and scoured through the cupboards. She looked through the various flatware until she spotted a purple mug. âAha!â She cheered as she brought it out and closed the cupboard door. Anxiety turned her gaze over to Joy. âSo does Fear prefer coffee or tea in the morning?âÂ
âHe normally drinks honey lemon tea,â Joy answered without hesitation.Â
âGreat!â Anxiety cheered. She turned her attention back to the cabinets. âNow where are the teabags located?âÂ
----------------
Fear propped his head in his hands, leaning on the console as he stared absentmindedly at the screen. Riley was now rowing a canoe with Bloofy and Pouchy as her companions.Â
âI have lots of items!â Pouchy happily declared. âWhich one do you think will work the best? A basketball? An avocado?âÂ
âA coherent script?â Fear tiredly riffed. Before Pouchy could offer the dynamite, the dream shut off. Riley woke up and turned to her alarm clock to find that it 6:00 AM. Her alarm would not go off for another half-hour, so she chose to lie back down.Â
âOh thank goodness, itâs over.â Fear exhaled. Grabbing the remote, he pressed the button which sounded the alarm for everyone to come to the control room. He let out a yawn and stretched out his arms.Â
âHi, Fear,â Anxiety called out as she popped up right next to him. Fear shrieked in surprise, clutching his hands against his chest and moving his chair backwards. Anxiety herself yelped and recoiled at the response. After realizing they unintentionally scared each other, they took a moment to calm down before apologizing to one another in unison. âIâm so sorry, Anxiety,â âI-Iâm sorry, I didnât mean to scare you-âÂ
But after hearing their words overlap, they stopped to look at one another. After a moment of silence, Fear was the first to speak up. âDid you sleep well last night?âÂ
âYeah, I did, thank you,â Anxiety replied. âI, uh, want to give you something,âÂ
She took him by the hand and helped him to his feet. Fear stared at Anxietyâs hand while she led him to her special chair. On the nightstand, he noticed two hot mugs of tea (one purple and one orange) sitting next to each other.Â
Anxiety let go of his hand and picked up the purple mug. âHere,â She quietly offered Fear the tea. Her eyes shyly darted toward the floor. âI...I wanted to thank you for helping me out last night.âÂ
"Oh thank you, Anxiety, that's very thoughtful of you," Fear said as he gingerly accepted the tea. He inhaled the sweet aroma of the honey lemon tea and blissfully sighed. A good cup of tea was a splendid reward for enduring a long night of dream duty. But if was extra rewarding coming from someone he deeply cared for.Â
Fear looked at Anxiety. "So, are you ready to take on today?"Â
Anxiety grabbed her mug of green mint tea. "Yeah, I'm ready to put our plan into action."Â
The two shared a smile and clinked their mugs together.Â

âOkayâŠI am so. freaking. lost.â Leo grumbled, putting his cheek on his palm as April sighed dramatically. âIâm gonna explain it to you one more time, Nardo. And if you still donât get it so help me.â April grabbed the empty shoebox she had in front of her, putting it in between her and the other teen.
âWe are doing a biome project for Bio class. And since you wanted to be special and different you decided to choose the hardest one to do: a Tundra.â April said as she raised a brow.
âSounds like me.â The mutant in blue chuckled.Â
The girl with glasses shook her head fondly, âAnd so, we need to replicate a Tundra biome using a shoebox and just explain what we know about the biome.âÂ
The slightly taller teen titled his head to the side, squinting his eyes at his best friend, ââŠThatâs it?âÂ
âWhat do you mean thatâs it?!â The yellow cladded girl basically squawked, âDo I look like someone who knowâs a lot about snow?âÂ
The turtle giggled in amusement, crossing his arms playfully, âWe live in Manhattan, Pril. We get, like, 20 to 30 inches of snow most of the timeâŠâ
âJust because we get a shit ton of snow every season does not mean I know a lot about it.âÂ
Leonardo grinned at his friendâs funny comment, going into his backpack and pulling out a bunch of written on notecards. âThen itâs a good thing I wrote down facts about the Tundra when Mr. Fredrickson was going over the different biomes in depth in class.â
Aprilâs eyes widened in both shock and respect, going over to look at the notecards Leo wrote on, âYou actually listened when he was doing that?! I fell asleep when he got to the rainforest biomeâŠâ
âPrillieâŠthat was literally the first one he went overâŠâÂ
âMy point still stands.â She shrugged, looking at the notecards in awe. âDudeâŠyou wrote down everything. You have the definition, what animals live there, fun facts and a whole bunch of other stuff!âÂ
âYou even wrote down the different plants and regions that are inside of the biome.â She said in surprise, giving Leo back his notecards, âOh my god I love you so fucking much. We are going to ace this project.â The human girl said as she went back to the empty shoebox.
The mutantâs eyes widened at her comment, a small blush appearing on his face as he cleared his throat to try and recollect himself, âY-Yeah u-um I-I love you tooâŠâ
âWhat?â April said genuinely, not hearing what the other said.Â
âWhat?â Leo replied.Â
The girl raised a suspicious brow, âYou mumbled something, you weirdo.âÂ
âMe? What? N-No I was j-justâŠtalking to myself!â Leonardo explained, his blush deepening as he fiddled with his fingers, looking absolutely anywhere but the person in front of him.Â
April huffed out a laugh, getting her art kit from her desk that was next to her bed, âWhatever you say, you dork.â She chuckled out, sitting on her carpet as she suddenly spray painted the inside of the cardboard box white.Â
The turtle mutant covered his mouth, âDonât you think it wouldâve been better if you did thatâŠoutside?âÂ
The girl in glasses pursed her lips together, stopping and nodding slowly, âYeahâŠI shouldâve. My bad. ButâŠI kinda already started.â She said as she continued to spray paint the box. Leo rolled his eyes, opening the other teenâs door as he started to spray Frebreze everywhere. âLeoâŠwhat are you doing?â April asked.
The turtle raised a brow at his friend, âWhat does it look like? Iâm airing out the spray paint smell.âÂ
April covered her mouth, fanning out the air with her hand as she walked to Leo, âYou legit just put the Frebreze scent over the spray paint scent. Now itâs just mixed together.âÂ
Leonardo groaned internally, nodding his head as the slightly smaller teen explained how dumb his logic was. As the mutant in blue tuned his friend out, he looked out her window to look at her balconyâŠbut his heart dropped in shock (and a tad bit in confusion) as he saw his little brotherâs just chilling on the small balcony.
âNardoâŠare you okay?â The girl in glasses asked worriedly. âYEP! I-Iâm fine! Perfectly perfect.â He grinned wobbily, grabbing the now fully dry white shoebox and giving it to the other, lightly pushing her out of the room, âIâll just fan out everything here. You can go chill in your living room.âÂ
April huffed out a small laugh, âWeâre New Yorkers, LeoâŠweâve smelled worse.âÂ
âY-Yeah, I know! TrustâŠI know. Itâll be quick, I promise.â He said as calmly as he could muster at the moment. The girl just fondly rolled her eyes, going over to the living room, âDonât take too long, though! I need your help with finding a good show to watch as I finish the biome replica!â She shouted.Â
âIâll be right there!â He shouted back as he turned on her ceiling fan. He basically stomped to the balcony, closing the door as he glared at his younger brothers, âWhat the FUCK are you guys doing here?!â Leonardo screamed.Â
Donnie raised a brow as he leaned on the railway, âWhat ever do you mean?â
âWHAT DO YOU MEAN WHAT DO I MEAN?!â The leader in blue shouted, âH-How did you guys even get here in the first place?! Me and April rode her scooter to her apartment!!!â
âWeâre ninjas, bro. I think you always forget that.â Mikey chuckled and only chuckled harder at the eldestâs pissed off face.
Raph went over to his immediate older brother, slinging a hand over his shoulder, âSo~! Howâs the date going~?âÂ
âITâS NOT A DATE!!!â Leo screeched before facepalming, âHow long have you guys even been here, anyway?!â
âNot long.â Mikey shrugged, âIt was kindaaaaa hard having to climb up the buildingâŠâ
âWhateverâŠâ The blue banded teen grumbled as he turned away, âJust go home and donât tell Dad about any of this...â
âWhy~?â Donnie asked teasingly, âI personally think Dadâll be happy that his rizz is finally shining in you.âÂ
âDonatello.â Leonardo glared.
âFine! Fine! Weâre going!â Donatello said as he took off the backpack he had on, taking out color-coded grappling hooks and giving them to Raph and Mikey. âAlso, since April mentioned wanting to watch something with you, you guys should watch Smiling Friends. The rest of season two dropped.â The purple banded turtle explained. But before the eldest turtle could give his brotherâs a piece of his mind, they were justâŠgone.
Talk about being ninjaâsâŠ
âJiminy mother loving toaster strudelâŠâ Leo grumbled to himself.
.
.
.
.
.
.
âSmiling Friends?! I didnât know the rest of season two dropped!â April gasped as Leo walked into the living room talking about the show.
The hazel eyed mutant rubbed the back of his head awkwardly, âUhâŠyeah. I just looked online for stuff to watch and, umâŠyeahâŠâ
April snickered at the awkward demeanor of the other teen; not really and truly questioning it due to the fact Leo was just an awkward person 24/7. The blue banded mutant sat next to his friend, fiddling with his fingers as Smiling Friends played on the TV.
âHey, Nardo? I wanted to say sorry about the whole spraying-spray-paint-and-literally-almost-intoxicating-you thing. I just wasnât really thinking about it making more sense for me to spray it outside.â The girl explained solemnly.Â
The younger teen snorted, âPrillieâŠitâs fine. Itâs not like you killed me or anything like that. I think you should worry about your Mom coming home to the smell and killing you, though.â
âOH SHIT!â The elder teen shouted, going to her room to spray Frebreze and spray some in the living room as well. The girl with glasses sat down before sighing, leaning back, âOh! And btdubs, I finished the Tundra replica.â She said as she finished the last final touches on the piece before handing it to the other teen.
And to Leoâs surpriseâŠthe replica actually looked pretty good. LikeâŠreally really good. The inside of the shoebox honestly looked like a mini TundraâŠand it even had little mini clay plants and animals.Â
âYou seriously just made this?! April, I wasnât even gone for ten minutes!â Leonardo said in awe.Â
âYou, my dear friend, underestimate my artistic skills.â The brown eyed teen said as she continued to watch the television.Â
NowâŠLeo wasnât known for getting intoâŠmoods often.Â
I mean, in all honesty he would just get tickle attacked by his brothers 24/7âŠso in a weird way, he kind of got used to it.
But ever since he and Raph went on that call with April a couple weeks agoâŠshe hasnât mentioned said call. At all.
And perhaps maybe she forgot! Maybe she forgot the legit most embarrassing moment of Leoâs lifeâŠ
âŠso why the absolute hell did Leo want her to mention it? Or at least acknowledge it!Â
I meanâŠRaph even dropped the bomb that Leo liked it! That was a clear opportunity right there!!!
But in order for one to be actually tickledâŠone must ask for it first. And there was no fucking wayLeonardo was going to do that.
âYou want me to tickle you, donât you?â April said casually as she looked at the other teasingly.Â
The mutantâs eyes widened in shock, his face becoming a glowing hot red as he absolutely refused to make eye contact with the other teen. âA-April whahatâ?â
âDudeâŠdonât even try to deny it. Youâve made it so painfully obvious.â She giggled softly as the otherâs face burned in embarrassment.Â
Was he seriously that easy to read?!
âShould I take your silence as a 'yes'?â The human girl smiled as the blue banded mutant shyly nodded, still refusing to look at his best friend. âOkay, NardoâŠjust tell me when you want me to stopâŠokay?â She said carefully as she gently reached for the otherâs side but stopped when the young leader held her wrists.Â
âW-Wahait!!! Wahait wahahait A-Ahapril wahait!!!â Leonardo panicky giggled as he blushed more (if even possible). The girl stopped, resting her hands in her lap. The slightly taller teen covered his face with his hands, giggling in anticipation before nodding slightly.
The yellow cladded teen awed at the sight, scribbling her nails against the otherâs sides. The mutant pursed his lips together, kicking his legs on the ground. The girl with glasses chuckled at the action as a lightbulb went off in her head, âWait a sec, Nardo. Do you remember the FaceTime call me, you and Raph went on?â
âN-Noho shihihitâŠâÂ
âI do believe on said FaceTime call, Raph mentioned you being more ticklish to squeezes than to scribblesâŠis that correct?â She asked teasingly, although she knew damn well what the answer was already.Â
The blue banded mutantâs giggles raised an octave as he now started to squirm as his friend squeezed his sidesâŠ
âŠNow this could go one of two waysâŠ
He could absolutely make a complete fool out of himself or he makes a complete fool out of himself. Either or.Â
âA-AHAhapril!â The turtle squeaked out.
âYes, Leo?â The human replied casually.
âPleHAâ *snort* p-pleheHEASE!!!âÂ
âPlehease whahat~?â
âI-IHI *snort* duhunno!!â Leo squealed, now hugging his middles as he continued to laugh. The slightly smaller teen wrapped him in a hug with one arm, using her other arm to pull out her phone. She went to her camera roll and scrolled until she found a screen recordingâŠ
âŠA specific screen recordingâŠ
âŠThe screen recording April screen recorded while they were on that FaceTime call.
Leo hid in his shell a bit, his laugh echoing in said shell but he did not care in the slightest at this point. The teen girl raised a brow at the action, holding the otherâs hand in herâs as she used her other hand to squeeze his hip mercilessly.Â
Leonardo squawked in surprise as a loud (totally not expected) snort followed. He hid in his shell even deeper as he full on laughed and laughed. âWoah wohoah! Why are you hiding your face from me~?âÂ
âI-IHIâM NAHAT!!âÂ
âYohou sure? 'Cuz it kinda looks like you areâŠâ
âIHIâM *snort* NAHAT I-IHI SWAHAâ *snort* SWEAR!âÂ
The girl with glasses laughed in amusement, âRaph was rightâŠyou really are a liar, huh Gigglenardo~?âÂ
Leo snorted loudly at the girlâs tease, his laughs becoming more louder and more frantic. And the worst part is she barely even touched the surface of his ticklishnessâŠ
The girl wrapped the taller teen into an even tighter hug, using her free hand to scribble her fingers all over his stomach. The taller teen screeched, slumping in her hold as he 'tried' to escape her tickling wrath.
April played the screen recording (on mute of courseâŠshe wasnât that mean), wanting to test something the tallest turtle did that got a good hell of a reaction from the leader in blue. âNardoâŠjust a quick questionâŠdoes this happen to tickle by any chance~?â
âS-STAHAHAP! DAHAâ *snort *snort*Â DOHONâT STAHART!!â
âWhatâs wrong~? Iâm just asking if this tickles, Gigglenardo.â She said as she gently squeezed his stomach with one hand, causing the other to squirm despreatley in the hug. âIt seems like it does~! Tickle tickle~! Kitchie kitchie coo~!â
âNOHOâ *snort* *snort* PLEHEASE DAHAâ *snort* DOHOHONâT!!!â The brown eyed turtle screamed before April randomly stopped so the mutant was able to catch his breath for at least a little bit. âNerdo~! Do you mind getting out of your shell for me, please~?â
Leonardo snorted loudly for probably the umpteenth time today, âNOHOâ *snort* *snort* WHYHYHY?!â
âJust 'cuz~! I wanna try something.â She said as Leo poked his head out from his shell. The two made eye contact with one anotherâ Leo glared at her while she innocently smiled back as she tickled the crook of his neck.
âPFFTâ *snort* *snort* *snort* NAHAHA IHITâS SAHAâ *snort* *snort* SOHO BAHAâ *snort* *snort* BAHAHAD!!!â
âReheally?â The brown eyed teen mused, âI personally think youâre trying to say it tickles~! It tickletickletickletickles~!â She giggled as she tickled both sides of the turtle teenâs neck with one hand, leaving him in stitches. âKSSTAHAâ *snort* *snort* *snort* NAHAHA *snort* *snort* *snort* *snort* *snort*!!!âÂ
The girl in glasses slowly stopped her tickle attack, hugging him from behind as he caught his breath. âOhon the FahaceTime call, I rehecall Rahaph saying you snort fihive tihimes if itâs a good dahay~!â She teased lightly as Leo just groaned in response.Â
âWhahateverâŠâ Leonardo grumbled as the girl with glasses got up to get him a cup of water from the kitchen. She handed it to him, which he gladly accepted.
And thatâŠwasnât as bad nor scary as Leo initially thought it was going to be.Â
The hazel eyed mutant fiddled with the now empty cup, âUhmâŠthahank you for the wahaterâŠahand..uh, y-y'knowâŠâ He trailed off, looking at the ground in embarrassment as the other smiled fondly, âItâs no problem, Leo.â She chuckled, âThereâs really no need to be so embarrassed about it. I get it.âÂ
âI-I know that butâ wait. What do you mean you getââ But the slightly taller teen was cut off by Aprilâs doorbell going off. The two paused, not expecting any visitors besides Aprilâs momâ who was supposed to come later and also had the key to the apartment.Â
SoâŠshe wouldnât need to ring the doorbell.
The doorbell rang again as Leo got up and simply stepped forward, opening the door slowly but sighing loudly as he saw who was on the other side.Â
It was his brotherâs. Because of course it was.Â
âSo~! Howâd the date go~?â Mikey grinned plqyfully.
âIt went fineâ wait what?! For the last time itâ thisâ is NOT a date!!!â Leonardo glared.
âSo in Leo languageâŠIâm assuming that means it went well.â Donnie chuckled, âHappy for you, bro.â The purple banded turtle said almost genuinely as April walked to the open door next to Leo. âWhahat are you guys doing here? AndâŠhow did you get here?âÂ
âWell, I got bored and hungry so I ordered pizza. We decided to come over here so you two could eat with us.â Raphael explained.Â
âYou got said money from my savings account?â Leo deadpanned.Â
âI got said money from your savings account.â Raph grinned, âNow letâs go! If we hurry we could catch the person delivering the pizza!â He shouted as the four teens ran down the fire escape. April grabbed her keys before closing (and of course locking) her apartment door, soon following her mutant friends.

College AU Chapter 4 DROP đ§Ąđ
Sorry I didn't write for this AU in a while ^^" I got writers block TvT Then it was exam period in college and then the holidays- *oof* BUT IM BACK NOW, AND 2 CHAPTERS AWAY FROM THE END!!!
Actually, this chapter was inspired by @eechytooru 's artwork, same as the rest of the AU lol, but I mean specifically the doodle where they're playing chess in this post
(Do you guys have any idea how far I had to scroll to get this link??? XD) Anyway, you'll see why JSUT READ QISBWKSO-
Chapter 4 : Checkmates
Anne and Saddie, arms linked, walked up to the chess club doorstep one peaceful Monday afternoon. Anna had figured fewer people stay past class hours on Mondays, so there would be a lot less pressure. Having prepared herself for this, she felt a surge of energy throughout her body, and she had a smile from ear to ear.
"Thank you again, Saddie. You know, you really didn't need to accompany me, though."
"I'll be honest and say it was more for my nerves than your own," she admitted.
Anna-lee chuckled, "Thank you. I'll see you tomorrow morning!" She waved goodbye to her senior and opened the door. The bright light of the room pouring into the hall.
Sitting at the front desk of the club was a smiling woman. She wore a knee-length blue dress with a subtle star pattern over a white t-shirt and a pair of blue ballerinas. The outfit was accessorized with a cute beaded necklace. Her blonde roots stood in harsh contrast to her bright blue pixie cut. Her style was so distinctive that Anne had no problem recognizing her. Her smile spread across her face just a little bit more.
Once the woman laid eyes on her, she sprang out of her seat and grabbed her hand to shake it excitedly, "Hello!!! Oh my gosh, I've heard so many good things about you! It's so nice to finally meet you!"
"You have?," she asked, her voice shaking, "That's great, but hm- what was your name again?"
"Oh, I'm sorry! I can get ahead of myself sometimes; I'm Jocelyn, Jocelyn Meyer, but you can just call me Joy."
"It's nice to meet you too, Joy! Great name, by the way," Anna-lee pointed out.
"Thanks," she humbly accepted the compliment, "I'm assuming you came to check out the club! Would you like a tour, or are you good exploring on your own?" She offered.
"Wellâ " Anna leaned to her right side, checking out the room behind Joy.
On the left, there were students having coffee and playing card games, comfortably sitting on an assortment of sofas. To her right, a row of tables had more serious students playing a variety of board games, including chess. The entrance's bright yellow light dimmed into a redish hue that gave the rest of the room the air of a casino night. At the very back, Frederick sat at a desk, cabinets, full of board games and other knick-knacks standing tall behind him. He was bent over a ton of paperwork, his eyes darting between two copies, marking notes from time to time in red ink.
"I wouldn't mind an explanation as to why the chess club has much more games than I would have anticipated?" questioned Anna.
"Great question!" The two walked into the club, on their way to the back of the room, "A few years back, we really were just 'the chess club' up until the previous director took her maternity leave. You must know her since she's in your department : Saddie?"
"Yes! She guided me here, actually. I mean, aside from Fred, who's mentioned it in passing," she chuckled nervously.
Jocelynâs eyebrows frowned and her lips perked.
"What?" Anne asked, her voice shaky, "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Oh, nothing. I'm just still surprised he didn't mention it more considering taking Saddie's place was no small feat. The humble bastard," she elaborated.
Before she could explain further, they had reached Fredâs directorâs desk. Anne had a perplexed look on her face. She lifted a finger up to her lip.Â
âFred, could you shed some light on that for me?â asked Joy, but the question flew right past him as he continued his correction work. The girls shared a confused look before Joy hit the desk lightly with both her hands, âFred?â she repeated, raising her voice ever so slightly.
The man jolted back before looking up. In an instant, his face flushed, his shoulders tensed, and he jumped out of his office chair, hitting his knees on the desk. The yell he stuffed down came out as a squeal. He fell back into his chair, holding his knees as it rolled back, breathing in through his teeth. Anna-lee hid her agape mouth behind her hands, and Joy scrunched her teeth.
âOh my gosh! Iâm so sorry, I didnât mean to scare you,â she apologized, âAre you ok?â
âYup! Give me a moment,â he took a deep breath before standing up straight and waving 'hello' with an embarrassed look on his face, âHi Anna-lee.â
Anna smiled nervously, returning his little wave. Joy side-eyed her and smirked, âFred, why haven't you explained to Miss Tyson how you got this position?â
âI... I don't really like to brag,â he responded honestly, returning swiftly to his work.
"Aw, it's not a brag! It's like, like... history! Of the chess club! Come on, tell her!" Joy poked his arm.
Anna-Lee's face lit up, "I like history!"
Fred sighed before explaining without looking away from his paperwork, "When a director leaves their post, the members of the chess club play a chess tournament in which the winner gets to become the new director-"
"He won the last tournament and hasn't lost a single match since!" Joy cheerfully finished his tale, clapping her hands together, proud of him.
Frederick's face flushed red, his eyes rolled in annoyance, and he smiled. Anna-lee looked at him in awe. Then, her brow frowned nefariously, "How offended would you be if I said I didn't believe you?"
He looked up at her again, this time with a serious look on his face, â... Is that a challenge?â
The next thing they knew, they were sitting face to face at a table in the center of the room, the chess board printed onto its surface, patiently awaiting the war of pawns. Jocelyn and a few club members as their audience. The tension in the room was slightly off. Everyone could foresee the outcome of the match, yet Anna-Lee's pure excitement and general brash attitude still had the small audience shaking with anticipation. Joy was referee; she flipped a coin to determine who goes first. Fred guessed his head, Anna guessed tails. The coin landed on tails, so she moved her pawn first. He did the same on his turn. The back and forth went on for five very silent, very focused turns, at least for Anne, who knew who she was up against and tried to do her best. Fred calmly swirled the coffee in his mug after every move, taking a sip from time to time, a smile plastered on his face.
âCheckmate,â he whispered after his fifth turn, having moved the black rook diagonally to the white king.
âHuh? But- Huh,â she scratched her forehead and threw her hands in the air, âI lost.â
Everyone sighed knowingly and casually went back to their own games, âWell, Joy did try to warn you. Hopefully, this didnât upset you... and you still want to hang out in the club?â asked Fred, nervously hiding his face behind his mug.Â
Anne reached over the table and grabbed his left hand, holding it with both of hers, âLetâs play again,â she said dryly, a fire burning in her eyes.Â
He looked over at Joy, hoping sheâd have something comforting to say or do, but she simply shrugged and went back to the front desk, leaving the two alone, more or less. He smiled at Anna, his eyebrows shaking nervously.Â
They played for so long; they had lost track of time. At first, he counted the games heâd won, but he stopped counting after 12; determining that she wouldnât stop playing until sheâd defeated him... He tried giving her tips, but she wouldnât listen to any of them, saying she preferred to figure it out on her own. Fred couldnât help but feel bad, not only because playing against a novice this many times made him feel pity, but also because he was genuinely enjoying seeing her plan her moves and get excited over even the slightest bit of progress only to fail anyway and get frustrated. Every time Anna failed, however, it just fueled her passion more. She was frowning almost the entire time, but he thought she looked adorable regardless. Fred silently smiled to himself. Her king piece fell over and over until the club room was left completely empty.
âI donât mean to interrupt, um, whatever is going on here-â Joy walked up to them, waving her hands at the situation.
âItâs war,â clarified Anna-lee, a straight look on her face.
Joy giggled, âSure! But um, itâs getting late, and Iâd like to head home now.â
âOh my gosh!" Anna yelled, looking down at her watch, "6PM?? Iâm so sorry! Iâll leave now!â She jumped out of her chair and grabbed Jocelynâs arms, hugging her as thanks, then swiftly running straight out the door. Before she left, however, she peeked her head through the door to say one last thing : "BUT! Donât think this is over, Frederick! I will defeat you! MARK MY WORDS!â And she slammed the door shut.
The math teachers were left speechless. Fred swirled his mug one last time.
âHey~ looks like someone's made a rival,â Jocelyn teased him, hitting his left arm with her elbow.
Fred tried to take a sip of his cup, but his tongue was left dry, âI think Iâm gonna need more coffee.â
âââââ
For the next few days, Anna-lee showed up at the chess club after class, asking Fred for at least one match, to which heâd concede. She became an official member after her third day. Their games got progressively longer. Sheâd smile at him every time he realized she'd made unexpected progress, but no matter what technique she tried, Anne would always lose. Despite this, Anna-lee loved playing against him. Something about the competition, the goal sheâd set for herself, made her feel alive. She had researched the history of chess and various chess strategies on her own time; spending hours sitting in her bed, curled up over her computer screen, reading. If she was to play against anyone else, she would most likely win, or at least she likes to believe that she could, but ultimately, she didnât want to beat anyone else. She wanted to defeat Fred. Anna hasnât had this much fun in a while. Now, when she enters the club, she feels right at home. Where she belongs. The red velvet walls give her a warm, comforting embrace.Â
She sat at the chess table in front of Fred once more, holding out a coin.
âIâm ready when you are,â he said.
Anna flipped the coin, guessing heads. It landed on tails.
âDarn!â she cursed under her breath, which made Fred laugh.
The black and white checkered pattern of the board matched his sweater vest. Oftentimes, as silly as it sounded, Anna wondered if it gave him some sort of advantage. It almost seemed like every piece on the board was on his side, like she was playing against the game itself. Perhaps it was just an impression she got from not looking at him- enough? Her eyes darted up at him, and she was reminded why she so rarely does so. His dark eyes seemed to have no end. It was as if looking straight up at a clear night sky, the endless sea of stars glistening with hope. She swallowed and looked back down at the game; shaken by how much she had to live up to. In a sharp move, she shoved her bishop across the board; seeking some kind of struggle from him. Instead, he smiled and moved his rook, taking her bishop. Anne scoffed, face flushed.
âSorry Madam. I will say, youâve gotten much more confident with your moves,â he shrugged his shoulders ironically.
âThatâs not fair. You distracted me!â she playfully pointed at him, her yelling grabbing the club membersâ attention.
âHow?â he chuckled.
âHuh-" shit-, "with your wits! I guess-â
"...True, I am a scientific calculator; youâre more like a novel,â he boldly stated.
âHuh?â Anna-lee muttered.
The room fell silent.
âI, wait, I mean-â
He scrambled with his words, trying his best to piece together an apology, but it was too late. As seconds passed, the silence in the room rang louder and louder in Anna's ears until she was deaf with anger, âNo, youâre right! And you know what? You can have your win! We both know how this ends anyway, right?! Screw the rules, screw your stupid club rules : I FORFEIT!âÂ
Anna-lee grabbed her things and stormed out the door faster than anyone could process what had just happened. Fred cowarded in his seat, frozen by fear and shame. A dark, misty cloud closed in around him, causing him to shiver.
âHey,â Joy said, placing her hand on his shoulder.
He looked up at her, speechless.
âI know you didnât mean what you said, but then... why?â
All he could do was shake his head.
âââââ
It's been a few days since the two have spoken, and Fred still feels awful about it. Anna-lee had been avoiding him, missing their usual meet-up times on tuesdays and ignoring him in the halls. The only moments she even acknowledged his presence were at the chess club. She came in every other day to challenge him to a match, but only under the condition they did not speak during the game. He had no idea why he kept accepting this. He needed to talk to her about this, but if he did, it would break her trust, and she'd probably stop going to the club at all. He'd never see her again... over a game of chess? No. This was his fault. He had to fix this. He had a plan, but he had a strong suspicion that she was not going to like it.
Tuesday, after his class, he stayed in the classroom for as long as necessary. Just as he thought, Anna-lee showed up 15 minutes before her class began, way past their usual meeting time. When she entered the room, her eyes widened at the sight of him, and as she spun around to leave, her face frowned.
"Wait! Anna-lee, can we talk?" Fred rushed to meet up with her in the hall.
"What is there to talk about, Fred?!" She turned around to face him, "I thought I was finally getting closer to you, being curious about an interest of yours, but clearly, I was wrong to think we could even be- compatible, since you've shown you don't actually respect my discipline!"
"I didn't mean any of that!"
"I don't care! All I want is an apology!"
"But you yelled at me and ran out without letting me apologize! And you're doing it again! How am I supposed to make it up to you if you won't even TALK to me!?"
Anna was taken aback. She was speechless.
"... Will you please listen to me?"
"OK- go on."
"I didn't mean to insult your discipline. If you know me at ALL, you know how much I respect youand I'd never insult you intentionally. I was trying to come up with a... a 'roast'? You know, playful banter, like we usually have, but I said the first thing that came to mind, and I didn't think about what I was saying until... well until I had said it," his voice got weaker and shaky as he explained, his body folding in on itself.
Anna's face softened, and she stepped closer to him.
"I'm sorry. It was never my intention to insult you or your intelligence..." With his next thought, he gained some of his spirit back, "Actually, you're one of the smartest people I know."
She looked a little surprised at first, but then she smiled.
"You're smart and funny," he complimented her, slowly holding out his hands to grab hers and gently guiding her closer to him, "And if we ever were to get lost in a crowd of people, I know I'd always be able to pick you out amongst them, because you are radiant."
Anna-lee giggled, her laugh causing her to lean onto him, "Oh Fred, never change," she gave him a hug and sighed before pulling away to look at him, "You're right, I'm sorry I didn't speak to you sooner. I let my feelings get in the way of problem solving, and it just left both of us in an uncomfortable situation. I was acting childish - c-could you forgive me?" Her voice cracked, and her eyes shined. She clung into his sleeves nervously.
"Of course! So long as you forgive me," he raised his left eyebrow, tilted his head, and smirked.
Anna-lee chuckled, "Don't waste my time! I have a class to give!" She pulled away from him and walked up to the door.
"But you do forgive me, right?"
"Yes, Fred, I do."
"Great! I'll see you... after class? At the chess club?"
"Yes sir! And you better be prepared for the match of a lifetime!" She threatened him playfully.
Fred smiled, a sappy, enamored smile, as he walked away, wishing 3 hours could pass by as quickly as 3 seconds would.
âââââ
"Prepare yourself, Fred, 'cause I'm about to rock. Your. World!" warned Anna-lee, sitting across her opponent at the chess table.
"Should I be scared or intrigued?" asked Frederick with a shaky voice, making sure he was in the right mindset before the game.
"Preferably : both."
"OK, good. Then consider me prepared!"
(Author's note: GET A ROOM!!!!!)
Every member of the chess club was present for the match, impatiently leaning in to watch the show. Joy was very excited for this particular match, as her friends had finally gotten back to their usual banter. She refereed once more, flipped a coin and determined Anna would go first.
With each turn, the tension in the air strung itself just a little tighter. Fred was smiling like a dork at first, happy to be playing with her like normal again, until he realized that she was taking quite a few more of his pieces then he'd like. Did his feelings get in the way of his strategizing? They haven't gotten in the way before; what gives? Everytime he made a move, Anne swiftly countered it. Eventually, he understood : Anna-lee was using his own technique against him. His face melted into a frightened shock, his mouth agape. When she saw this, she smiled devilishly. He looked up at her, his hands starting to shake nervously, then back down at the board. He swallowed. The tables had turned. A drop of sweat trailed down his jawline. The back and forth went on for five more very silent, very focused turns, at least for Fred, who knew what he was up against and had no idea how he could win. Anna-lee calmly moved her pieces, a smile plastered on her face.
"Checkmate!" She shouted and jumped out of her seat once her queen had finally, finally cornered his king. The whole room burst into cheers and hugs; she had accomplished what they'd all thought to be impossible!
"YA!!! I have been waiting to use these for so long!" Jocelyn jumped at Anna, throwing a cape around her shoulders and placing a handmade paper crown on her head, which filled her heart with joy. With all the club members surrounding her and congratulating her, Anna's cheeks started to hurt from how hard she was smiling, a tear almost forming in her eye.
Fred was still sitting down; leaning over the board in disbelief. He lay his head in his left hand and picked up his king piece; sliding it over next to her queen piece, "Congrats," he said, in awe of her. Soft. Humble.
Anna-lee blinked twice and froze; her breath was cut short. For just a moment, everything else ceased to be. For just a moment, she looked into his eyes and got lost in them again.
