Anxiety was dealing with multiple panic episodes lately. It wasn’t too uncommon for her. But, her employees noticed that she would grip onto her arms to the point it would take a huge amount of strength to help release herself. Anxiety had also been experiencing these same type of panic episodes during the night, which awakened some or all of the emotions.
Despite having been unavailable for many of them, Ennui has seen them all. She wasn't always sure what to say or do in these kinds of situations. She felt guilty because Anxiety had always been so encouraging, supportive, and nice to her. She wished she could do more for her beloved. What kind of friend was she?. Deep down, Ennui as well feared that the other emotions would sense her secret feelings for Anxiety and get leaked in some way. All she could do in those moments was sympathize with Anxiety and wish her negative thoughts would subside.
Ennui woke up first in the middle of the night, which was the first time she did during Anxiety’s recent episodes. She slowly removed her white face mask and heard muffled whimpers distant to where the console was. Ennui furrowed her eyebrows and quietly got out of bed, moving past the others so as not to wake them, and trailing the noises as it made her way to the console. Anxiety was kneeling down in front of the console, hyperventilating, hair messy, and once again, hugging herself, gripping onto her arms in a deadly grip. Ennui rushed to Anxiety and kneeled down to her level in front of her, and placed her hands on hers.
“Anxiety, breathe, mon ami. Slowly.” Ennui said gently but looked concerned.
“I-I-I’m trying!” Anxiety breathed in a frantic tone, triggering tears which slowly began spilling down her cheeks. Ennui shushed her and rubbed her hands in an upside down motion in attempt to soothe her.
“Breathe with me.”
Anxiety nodded rapidly and Ennui inhaled and exhaled deeply, her low voice giving Anxiety a pleasant tingling sensation. Her voice had always been one of her favourite things about her. It was just calming and reassuring to her. Anxiety tried to repeat her but struggled.
“Again.” Ennui said in an engorging tone. They did this excerise three more times and finally, Anxiety was breathing normally, but was still gripping her arms. Ennui did not let go her hands.
“Anxiety, please let go of your arms, mon douce, you’re hurting your pretty arms.”
More tears fell from Anxiety’s eyes and nodded slowly releasing them, while Ennui carefully tugged along with her. Finally, Anxiety released her arms making Ennui sigh out of relief. At this point she let go of Anxiety’s hands. Anxiety looked up at Ennui in her distressed state, shaking less.
“I-I’m sorry Ennui, I know I’ve been doing this a lot lately, I don’t know why, I feel so bad and I know I’m disturbing your sleep, and I know you need your rest for the morning, and that I should just find a way to handle it myself, and—-“
“Shhh, hush, mon cher. You don’t need to apologize. Viens ici dans mes bras.”
Ennui pulled Anxiety into her arms, resting Anxiety’s cheek on her chest, Anxiety enjoyed the soft material of her black shirt. Ennui wrapped her long arms around Anxiety and held her in a strong but comforting embrace. Anxiety cried softly now from the exhaustion of the situation. Ennui stroked through Anxiety’s messy strands with one hand in an attempt to comfort her more. After a while, Anxiety’s cries subsided and Ennui placed a gentle kiss on her forehead, which Anxiety noticed blushing furiously. But didn’t say anything not wanting to ruin the moment.
“Are you alright now, Anxiety?” Ennui asked softly.
Anxiety exhaled and looked up at the indigo emotion. Her eyes were fatigued, bangs had creeped out underneath them, and her cheeks were tear-stained but smiled.
“Yeah, I am. Thank you..” Anxiety replied weakly, looking down flustered.
Ennui smiled warmly and placed her hand on Anxiety’s right cheek and gently guided it back to her face.
“Of course. That’s what we’re here for, right? You are never a bother to us. It’s a part of who you are. But it’s how you deal with it what matters, and you are trying. I see it.”
The orange emotion just stared at her in awe, and her smile grew wider.
“Thank you, Ennui. You really are the best.”
“Don’t mention it.”
Anxiety looked at Ennui’s hand that was resting on her cheek and put her right hand on top of hers, and kissed her palm. Revealing a shocked glance and gasp from Ennui. Her cheeks now forming a dark blush herself.
“But I will, ma chere.”
Ennui swiftly pulled her in her arms again embracing her. Anxiety wrapped her arms around Ennui as well and ran her fingers through her long hair. A couple minutes passed and Ennui looked down at Anxiety.
“Anxiety? Are you ready to try and go back to sleep?”
Anxiety yawned.
“Yeahh. I’m exhausted.”
“We should get some sleep. We have to get up in a couple hours.”
“Can I please sleep with you tonight? I don’t want this to end yet and I don’t want to be alone.” Anxiety asked a little desperate in the end.
“Oui, oui. Of course. Come, allons-y.” Ennui said in a caring tone, grabbing Anxiety’s hand. She led her to her bed, the others were still knocked out. Ennui climbed and scooted to her right side of her bed and laid down on her left side. Anxiety climbed afterwords and laid down next to Ennui, trying to give her space. This only made Ennui pull her closer, making Anxiety release a soft yelp and rested her head on her chest again. Ennui’s arms wrapped around Anxiety and used one to yank the cover over them.
Anxiety yawned, her eyes heavy. Ennui smiled softly and kissed her forehead and the crown of her head gently.
“Sleep now, chere. Everything will be okay. I will be here if you need me.”
Anxiety nodded and shut her eyes, soon breathing softly but not with fear, indicating she fell asleep. Ennui placed a final kiss on her forehead and rested her chin on Anxiety’s head.
“Bonne nuit, mon amour.” Ennui whispered lovingly.
Ennui closed her eyes and the two emotions slept in each others embrace until Riley woke up. No one understood why Anxiety and Ennui were sleeping on the same bed but decided not to bring it up. Joy thought it was very sweet and couldn’t stop talking about it for a bit during that morning.
(Been having inside out/inside out 2 brain rot for the past week. I can’t stop looking, watching reading, content about it. It’s genuinely an amazing franchise. Also anxiety and ennui have been on my mind lately, ennui’s my fav lmao. I see the chemistry between these two. I’m a little embarrassed (No pun intended) to share this and thought it was a bit out of character on ennui’s part but reading over it so much I didn’t think so much. ANYWAYS enjoy to my anxiety and ennui lovers!! ^ ^)
They’re the first two women I’ve ever written while writing LMAO
And I don’t think I need to say but if there’s gonna be any hate, leave ‼️

Tumblr media
Platonic:
Definitely one of your best friends.
She’s so sweet 😭
I wanna say you met her shortly after she was introduced into your class, when she was 12. You probably moved to San Francisco as well, but probably from at a younger age- like 5 years old.
You learned earlier on to understand the environment and adjust to it (even with how different and altering it was to you). You’re used to the same routine everyday, the same things everyday, and many things haven’t changed since then. You’ve definitely had trouble with friends even after being here for so long, though, it doesn’t matter- you were weird, at least to everyone around you. They never liked the fact you were.. primarily reserved. You were teased about it, nothing too severe, until it turned to bullying.
It’s…hard. The idea of being alone for the rest of your years here in middle school and then being alone in high school as well because they remember the recluse you were—
Well, until the new student arrived.
Riley Andersen, a girl who moved here from Minnesota with parents.
..If I’m being honest, it hurt to hear the pain within her voice after talking about her life in Minnesota, how she would play hockey from such a young age with her parents.
Though, it definitely took you much longer to actually talk to her, and go up to her. You’d definitely give her longing glances, seeing how lonely she seemed. And you understand, you’re in that very same position.
When you did introduce yourself however, she seemed a bit aloof about the whole situation. And you were patient.
“..Is this seat taken?” The nervousness in your voice was obvious, even with how much you tried to mask it. Tried to control the shakiness of it as you stood next to the dull, wooden picnic table. The blonde, with her head in her hand slightly looked up at you, surveying you for a moment before resting her head once more.
“..No.” She quietly replied.
“Did you.. wanna sit here?-“
“YES!— ..Yes, if that’s okay with you, of course!”
YOU EMBARRASSED YOURSELF. NONOJKOJOBO. GODDAMNIT. THIS IS NOT HOW THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO GOOOOOOOO.
“Make yourself comfortable.” You could definitely hear that she was at least attempting to be optimistic in her tone, which you silently appreciated.
Quickly sitting down, you placed your tray in front of you and attempted to find the most comfortable position to sit in.
“..So, you moved here- from Minnesota, right?”
“Mhm.”
..Dry reply. But- that’s okay! You understand why.
“It’s nice to know someone else who’s similar to you. I moved here myself as well, though it was.. a few years ago now. I’m sure you’ll at the very least like it here.”
“Oh- shoot, sorry um.. I’m (___). Riley, right?”
“..Yeah. Riley Andersen.”
You didn’t miss the small smile she gave you.
YOU HAVE ACQUIRED A NEW FRIEND LIFE-LONG FRIEND! :DD
Well- of course after some causal conversation about interests, hobbies, etc.
The two of you exchanged socials so you could keep in touch, and the two of you started talking more often during school and out of school, planning stuff for future hangouts and such.
It was genuinely nice to talk with her and get to know each other’s interests, and your bullies at school seemed bewildered at the fact that you’d actually grown more confident to go out and make friends. Even if it was some new girl like Riley.
Though when she started distancing herself, giving dry responses such as: “K.”, “wtv”, “lol”, “bye.” The repetitiveness of this had gotten you worried to the point you couldn’t even think of anything else but possibly losing your new friend. You just met her!
And this dryness eventually turned into ignorance on her end.
Of course you were going to be a bit of a worrywart over your friend, you had no idea what was going on in her head— you just wanted to help her in any way possible, and the nagging feeling that was gnawing at you due to this was impossible to ignore any longer.
So, you texted Riley when you noticed she was online one day: “Hi Riri! I’m sorry for the sudden message, but I’ve taken note that you’ve been leaving my messages on read for a bit now, and as much as I can understand wanting space from social platforms, but I would at least like to know if you’re okay. So, I wanted to request a video call or a meetup, so we can talk about everything going on, and you can speak your mind. I just want to talk to you, please.”
Apart of you wanted to wait for a message, but the other part of you wanted to close your laptop and hide in the corner of your room.
Though, you couldn’t pick fast enough given the fact Riley had already started typing her reply- given the fact you could see that she was.
“Call, ig. Whenever.”
..You instantly called the moment you got the chance.
“..Riley?” You quietly spoke up shortly after your friend had picked up the call, the laptop resting in your lap as you stared at Riley through the screen.
Riley seemed more despondent than you had seen her before, as she avoided any eye contact with you. The way your heart felt like it was sinking to your stomach-
“Riley?”
“I’m fine, (___). That’s what this call is about, right?” She spoke so bluntly- you probably would’ve thought you were talking to someone entirely different if you didn’t see Riley’s face, or recognize her voice you’d grown accustomed to.
“Riri- no, well- yes.. but that’s not the only thing! I want to know if anything’s bothering you. You know you can always tell me anything going on.” You interjected, shocked of the situation which was unfolding before you.
“Oh yeah, right.” …She rolled her eyes.
“I’m serious!”
“I can tell you’re lying to me!” The way she yelled at you, looking at the screen- the way her eyes were filled with such hateful vitriol made you physically recoil, eyes wide and mouth slightly agape. Did you do something to deserve this? Did you say something weird?? Maybe she’s just going through something and is so pent up because of it! But- with the way of how this conversation is unravelling, you really don’t think this is how this is gonna go.
With furrowed eyebrows, you frowned and surveyed her expression once more.
“You don’t understand what’s going on. You could never! And it’s not that you would even care anyways.” Riley continued, looking away from the screen once more before she tossed down her laptop onto her bed.
You really had no idea where any of these ideas were coming from.
Have you just not been a good friend? You’ve tried. You’ve tried so hard to be kind and courteous with your friend, you’ve tried so hard to genuinely help her, but it seems like all of your efforts are going to waste. Perhaps you didn’t try as hard as you thought in order to be a good enough friend who was worth hanging around with, worthy of love and being able to not beg for attention or seem needy.
Maybe they were right.
That you’re better off without any friends, that nobody would want to be your friend anyway.
You felt the tears welling up in your eyes.
“..Whatever.”
“Riley- wait-“
She closed her laptop, ending the call.
…what do you do now.
There’s no way to describe the next few hours during those moments.
You were up in your room, pacing, feeling a growing headache starting to blossom like a poisonous flower of sorts.
Nothing yet everything was going through your head at the same time, did she hate you? Was she going to drop you? What if you never see her again?? Would she hate your guts and actually try to humiliate you the next time you see her during school, or any other time?
Your breath hitches at the thought and you move yourself back up against a wall. Your parents weren’t home, they’re out probably galavanting around. It felt like blood was pounding through your ears, the feeling of a heart became unbearable and uncomfortable from the fact it was beating so fast, thudding against your chest. Your back slid against the wall as you curled up into a ball, hands shaking- entire body trembling. It just continued to get worse, whatever this was, as your vision became disfigured and distorted, as if you were looking through a fish-eye lens. You swear you felt your chest feel tighten, coupled with the fact it felt like bile was coming up your throat.
It felt disgusting.
All of it, you felt so sweaty, you felt filthy.
This is pathetic. (You don’t understand what’s happening.)
But you can’t move your body. It feels so stiff. The feeling of cotton in your mouth making you unable to speak, the heavy sensation of your limbs, the way the lights are too bright for your eyes now- it feels like the room os starting to spin, with the walls closing in, and the ceiling pressing down. You can't breathe anymore. You can't even scream as much as you wanted to at this moment.
The scariest thing about whatever’s happening still stands:
You have absolutely no clue what to do.
It makes you feel powerless. Weak. Pathetic and worthless.
Just like it does with the events that just unfolded with Riley.
And it makes you too tired.
Too tired to keep yourself awake.
Desperately, you find yourself trying to find some source of comforting within the rising heat of your own body, even with what’s happening. The tiredness begins to wash over, even with all of these feelings still present, and it genuinely makes you feel worse than it should. Everything about this feels wrong. You should be able to handle this- not freak out over it.
But you can’t help it.
You don’t know what else to do.
. . .
You don’t know how long you were passed out for.
But you realized that you’re on your bed right away. You found yourself turning on your lamp, before hastily starting to look around for a moment, around for your laptop. The moment you found it, you opened it, the time was the first thing you saw on the screen.
1 am.
You passed out for 2 hours.
Your parents must’ve come home and put you in your bed. Theres still lingering effects from whatever happened earlier, like a throbbing headache- and your eyes are incredibly dry, along with your throat.
It takes you a while before you slowly close your laptop, and shakily arise from your spot on your bed, finding yourself going downstairs to get a snack and a drink. Everything felt.. fuzzy, in a way you can’t describe. Derealization is a better way to describe it.
In languid movements, you grabbed a cold water bottle from the fridge, and decided to make yourself some simple microwaveable ramen.
Sitting there at the dinner table was awkward.
It felt lonely.
Depressing, even.
You attempt to distract yourself by drinking your water and focusing your attention on the outside sky, and the time on microwave.
You made sure you stopped it before the alarm went off.
Slowly eating, just.. wanted to not think about everything going wrong.
But you couldn’t stop it. You couldn’t do anything. You only made things worse, no?
Nothing else eventful happened during your time downstairs, and you finished up your food rather quickly, before cleaning up after yourself. You took your plastic water bottle with you, back to your room. Closing the door behind you, you placed the water bottle down on your nightstand before getting back into bed, the dim lighting allowing you to focus on your computer screen better.
A new message alert popped up on the screen.
It didn’t say who it was from, as you were just about to put in the password. The message left as fast as it appeared, and you barely saw it.
You quickly typed in your password, the screen resuming back to your chat logs with Riley. Where the new message was. You scrolled down, and saw the lengthy message in its entirety.
“(__), I know you’re probably asleep right now, but I know you’ll get this message when you wake up and I can’t get rid the guilt off of my consciousness because I’ve been thinking all about it ever since the call, but I’m so sorry about earlier. I didn’t mean to be so rude, or accuse you of anything. That wasn’t right of me. I have not been going through an easy time, and I don’t wanna divulge that all to you right now, but perhaps in the future when I’m not so tired and emotional? But, I understand that you’re going to be upset with me over the situation, and may no longer want to be friends with me. If you do, I won’t hold it against you. I just hope you can forgive me eventually.”
You could feel more tears well up in your eyes.
Riley was currently offline, though. She probably went to sleep.
But you wouldn’t just not leave her without a response. So, you got to typing quickly.
“Hey, it’s okay, Riri! I understand. There’s absolutely no way I would leave you as a friend, you mean so much to me that I don’t think I can believe a future without you being there as my first friend. Of course we can always talk about it later, but don’t feel pressured to do so. I’ll let you know again that I won’t pry information out of you, I’ll only be there to comfort you in anyway I can! You’re my best friend, Riri. I care so much about you, okay? Never be scared to tell me anything. (Sorry for the fact this is really short, I am so tired and have a headache- lol.)”
You two eventually talked about the whole ordeal eventually.
Overall, you two are inseparable!
Now, if we’re going to time-skip a bit to now where you’re also friends with Bree and Grace, you’re all still inseparable.
Maybe you play hockey- maybe you don’t, and play a different ice sport (ie: Ice Skating).
Nevertheless, you’re all incredibly good friends. You schedule hangouts as often as you can, understand each other, open up to each other, learn interests and hobbies you’re all interested. You enjoy each other’s company.
Bree is a great listener, and she actually sometimes will partake in some of your hobbies with you while you’re also doing them, even if she has no idea what it is. Like, if you’re drawing, she’d grab her own sketchbook and start drawing herself! (Though, neither of your drawings may not be good, you appreciate it). If you do actually play in a different sport, such as Ice Skating, you’d probably try and teach her some different moves- though she’d fail miserably. She’s at least trying, and that’s what you appreciate! Silent time with her is something you also enjoy having with her, because she’s one of the most comfortable people to be with (no offense to the others).
Grace is probably one of the funniest people in the group (not that the other two aren’t funny, its just that she’s so out of pocket at random points that it’s so perplexing yet, hilarious). You all could be silent for a moment while eating something, and then she says one of the most BEWILDERING things ever in human history. It shocks all of you to the CORE. (Don’t lie, we all have this one friend). If you tried showing her some moves in Ice Skating, she’d probably get some right. Though ultimately, she’d be decently stiff and fail in the end. But failure is a learning stone, not something to look down upon! She’s your favorite person to be around if you wanna get your hair braided or laugh so hard you can’t breathe.
Now, back to Riley. Even with Grace and Bree, you two still hold the closest relationship, given your guy’s background, you two talk the most to each other. You’ll blabber something about one of your interests, and she’ll add onto it, and then it’ll be a back and forth of questions from her and answers along with fun facts from you. You even got her into doing some of your hobbies from time to time! If you were to show her some moves in Ice Skating, she’d just admire. SHE WOULD NEVER DO IT. She would be too anxious, and freak out before even doing anything, so she just gives you a thumbs up. Though, if you implored a bit, she’d definitely give in and absolutely FAIL. (None of these girls know how to Ice Skate). Nevertheless, she’s one of your favorite people overall, and you care about her tons.
Now if we fast forward even more towards the end of the Inside out 2 movie, to where Val and her friends come into play..
Val is a gentle, yet firm person. Even with the age gap, you both are stille good friends and care for each other. She’s more like a mother figure to you, but still. You two managed to find a few hobbies the both of you enjoy that you both partake in whenever you can/are available, to which you both take great delight and joy in. Both because you enjoy each others company, but because you can relax and don’t have to worry about conversation, because if you/her want it to be silent- it’s comforting, but if you/her wish to engage in lighthearted banter about anything in general, it feels natural and genuine. Not forced, like you two have to keep talking, but that if you want to, you can! If you tried to show her any Ice-Skating moves, she’d definitely be the best at accuracy and skill. What can I say, she’s a woman of many talents! (She still fails). The best person if you need someone to go talk to. #ibelieveintherapistfriendvalortiz.

Romantic:
Yk this girl is so anxious.
I feel like her love language is acts of service. Ngl.
Taking everything from the platonic area as a prequel to this, she definitely knew she had a crush on you the moment she actually started seeing so many things about you that she hadn’t noticed before or really taken attention to: Your smile seemed much more genuine, your eyes had this small shone to them she originally didn’t see, the way you were by her side when she asked to console her- rubbing her back in circular motions, hugging her firmly yet softly.
….WHAT IS HAPPENING. HELP. WHAT DOES SHE DO???
WHAT IS THIS FEELING.
Amia is behind the console, and accidentally made her so confused with this sudden romantic attraction. (IM SORRY, I WANTED TO HAVE AN EXCUSE TO BRING HER UP).
She definitely starts trying to get closer to you as possible, scheduling more private hangouts for just the two of you- such as picnics, hangouts at her house. And she would use the fact that Grace and Bree wouldn’t be able to make it to her house at the time to her advantage/as an excuse.
Though, the downside is the fact she’s too anxious to even speak to you half of the time. Too anxious to genuinely do anything- even get closer like she originally intending.
..She eventually asked her parents for some advice. Which, may or may have not been a good idea.
Even with that, they still did help in their own way.
So the next time you went to leave your house for whatever, you’d discover a letter at your doorstep. The next day after that, flowers and chocolates. Though they weren’t expensive gifts, they were something.
You noticed that Riley actually started doing things for you before you even asked. You were about to ask her for a glass of water whole the two of you were relaxing at either her or your house, and she’s already handing the glass. You were about to ask her to pass her one of the ingredients you needed while cooking, and she’s already placed it into your hand. Trying to open the door? She already opened it for you, about to leave? She’s got your bag for you before you leave, full of everything you could needed. It’s gotten to the point where you’re actually a bit scared of her intuition.
Perhaps you may have had a crush on her too? Who knows. You decide, after all.
It’s.. hard to pinpoint when this whole ordeal started unraveling, but nevertheless- you felt very… odd at first. Why was she doing all of this for you? A part of you wanted to say that it was all just her being extra friendly on accident and that it meant nothing- but another part of you thought differently.
But the idea of someone having a crush on you felt absolutely and utterly absurd, ridiculous, and incredulous!
You two are just friends! (Just friends.. okay, right/sarc).
She would.. never think of you in romantic sense, there’s just no possible way. (De Nile is a river in Egypt🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️‼️‼️‼️/ref).
(OMFG I NEED TO STOP. IM GIGGLING TOO MUCH AND BEING IMMATURE. But it’s silly).
Nevertheless, you just.. cannot accept it as true. It’s just some actions, it’s nothing that serious! You’re over-analyzing and overthinking it! Stop thinking like that!
..But it doesn’t go away. The itching sensation in the back of your brain never leaves. You’ve started to think about it 24/7, and as much as you try to push it down and say you’re overreacting, it’s still there- even diminutively. It’s. Always. There.
With the more time you spend trying to rid of the suspicion and feeling, you’ve started noticing little things about Riley yourself: The way she looks at you just a little longer than anyone else with a look in her eyes that is indescribable, the way she waits for you at the door as you pick up your phone and holds it open for you, the way she leans closer to you whenever watching any movie- and perhaps in a too intimate way. Like, she gets too close and rests her head on your shoulder, nuzzling herself into your neck ever so subtly.
..I think it’s safe to say you’re getting attracted to her.
ESPECIALLY WHEN SHE’S PLAYING AT A HOCKEY GAME AND SHE WALKS UP TO YOU LOOKING ALL PRETTY, WITH THE WAY THE SUN REFLECTS OFF OF HER SLIGHTLY DAMPENED HAIR-
Yeah, yeah you are.
You’re blushing so hard at the realization of what the hell is happening right now. And you’re way too nervous to tell her anything. You even found out she was the one who left those small gifts at your doorstep. How?
Well..
“I’ll go get us some snacks from downstairs, ’ll be right back!” Riley’s voice sounded out, and you looked up from her sketchbook you’d been using with her permission!with a small smile on your face as you nodded in understanding, before she rather quickly shuffled out of the door and downstairs. You went back to doodling on the sketchbook.
You were just going to pay attention to what you were going to draw next, you saw a small piece of paper sticking out on another page.
..you should not be prying- but, perhaps she drew something!
The excitement filled you as you flipped to the page, where you were meet with no drawing of any kind. But instead, there was a note which was ripped. It was written rather quickly, and the confusion of what you were seeing quickly filled you. But looking at the first few lines had you shocked and blushing like crazy.
‘I had given them a few gifts to leave on their doorstep like my parents..’
Instantly, you closed the sketchbook all together, head racing with so many thoughts at the same time.
She was the one who left those gifts?…
You couldn’t believe it, at all.
Perhaps it was for a different person? (But it was too similar).
What the hell were you supposed to do now????
Wait for some sort of date from her?
Or ask her out yourself?
Both would be.. nerve wracking, but you knew you had to make a move soon, or you probably would never have another chances. You felt scared, more nervous than you had ever before in your life, but you seriously thought that there was going to be no other option.
You had to do it sooner rather than later, in fear of what would happen.
Especially with the possibility of ruining your relationship, you’d take the risk. For the both of you. This way, you could learn if she was truly being more friendly to you for some reason or for none at all and she simply felt like it.
But then another problem came up:
You had absolutely zero idea on how to ask someone out.
..what do you do now.
Well, you at the very least- knew it had to be romantic. Something genuine. None of that faux stuff!
So, you decided on a rather fancy picnic, that appeared to be more of a tea party instead of a small picnic with the fact that you wanted it to be much more different…
There was a large glass table with an umbrella stuck in the middle and unfolded as to keep those safe from the bright sunlight, delicately covered with an embroidered lace cloth.
Upon the table, there are an array of delectable snacks and drinks, carefully arranged. Elegant porcelain teapots, each filled with a different fragrant tea, sat alongside dainty teacups with gold-rimmed edges. Platters of finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam.
(You don’t remember how long this took, given you used old antiques and cleaned them so many times- just in case, and made all of these foods yourself. You borrowed the fancy table from your garage and cleaned it down, given it hadn’t been used in years, and brought some simple- yet fancy looking chairs from your house as well).
And you spent quite a bit making sure the letter you sent to Riley was perfect.
You were sat in one of the chairs, dressed in one of your most fancy outfits. You didn’t want to look foolish during this, after all- you made it all look this fancy for a reason!
It was a nice day out today, given that it wasn’t very cold or too warm to be uncomfortable. The sun was on the horizon, and the moon was rising as the stars started shining within the soft colors of pink and orange in the sky. Honestly, it felt more like a dream that this was happening.
And the way you’re genuinely panicking internally-
“(___)?” You heard someone speak up, and you turned your head to look at..
Riley, who was in her fanciest dress, you noted., Though you know she’s not one to dress so formal unless it’s an important event. The dress was white, right above her ankles with a floral design embroidered into it. Even on the slightly puffy sleeves. Though, she was still wearing her converse, with plain white socks to match. Her hair was styled into topsy tail ponytail from what you could see, and a flower clip in her hair.
“Why, don’t look rather ravishing!” You immediately said without another thought, and she blushed at the remark.
“Thank you- you look great yourself!” She nervously laughed while smiling, blush growing on her cheeks. A moment of silence passed between you two, before you spoke again.
“Well don’t just stand there, come sit with me.” Riley instantly became stiff, before nodding and scampering on over to the empty seat in front of you. You gave a lighthearted laugh before subconsciously wiping your hands down the sides of your outer garments.
The two of you stayed in somewhat awkward silence before striking up conversation with one another, talking about the things you did- not including anything.. personal (fangirling over one another) But, instead things you weren’t together for, like actives you did with family, or games/practice you had. Riley even commented on how well made and delicious the food tasted, which made you blush HARD. You were so giddy, yet so anxious at the same time- you felt the need to throw up.
“Thanks again for inviting me.” Riley spoke again before taking another bite of her macaroon, as you simply nodded. You’d found yourself going quiet as you continued to eat your food and sip upon your favorite drink the fancy, porcelain tea cup.
..how were you going to confess your feelings to her after she finds the little note stored in one of the macaroon? How will she react? Will you be able to speak fast enough? Will she accept this, or hate you for the rest of your time together as friends???
Your body was tense as you thought of all the horrible ways this conversation could go after she-
“Oh! Cool, some of them have little fortunes- like fortune cookies!” CURSES.
Riley’s face changed from one of joy, to one of perplexity as she read the small piece of paper, before looking up at you with the same look.
She could definitely see how pink your cheeks were.
REACT, IDIOT, YOU LOOK LIKE AN IMBECILE FOR JUST SITTING THERE!
“..(___)-“
“Riley Andersen, will you be my girlfriend!!?” You slapped your hands over your mouth the moment you said that. The words spill from your mouth like word vomit so quickly you had no time to react while you were saying it, only afterwards did you truly realize what you did.
Her mouth went agape, blinking a few times as she simply stared at you in shock, before her expression changed to a softer one and smiling wide.
“Of course.”
Now, isn’t that banal?
But it’s the way that it happened.
(Side note: you’ll never get to know what the slip of paper said 🫶😋)
Nah it was just some rhyming, and cringey poem that would continue with you saying aloud ‘Riley Andersen, will you be my girlfriend?’
You two are both very awkward to show each other any sort of affection in public, or in private at first. But; it started with Riley slowly- trying (and, failing) to be subtle, holding your hand in public.
Grace and Bree are the first two people you three told about your relationship after you got together the other day. Val being the third.
The more comfortable you get, the more you tell other people, like Riley’s Parents.
They definitely would take you to those Pride parades to show their support, ik it. Prove me wrong rn.
Nevertheless, all of them are incredibly supporting of your relationship!
The more comfortable you two get in the relationship, the emotional and touchy you get (not in that way 🤨).
Like, more hugs (back-hugs, random hugs, etc) between you two, more cheek/forehead kisses, cuddling for the first time, first time kiss, etc. The whole spiel.
Now… on the topic of the first kiss..
It happened at her house while it was just the two of you. Her parents were off at their jobs, and it was summer break. How it happened is.. decently embarrassing. She was leaning in to give you a cheek kiss, until you turned your head in her direction, purely for the reason you were going to ask her a question. It wasn’t until your lips were both connected did you realize what was going on.
Safe to say that both of you were blushing messes.
Grace and Bree tease you often about your relationship, not in a rude way- ofc, but in a friendly way. Val, gives small remarks from time to time, but they don’t mean anything rude by it!
Your relationship overall is pretty healthy, even with some small arguments here and there, and might even struggle with some miscommunication.
Your guy’s relationship though has its ups and downs, like any other, but you’ll always try your best.
For Riley.
Your wonderful girlfriend <3.
. . .
“All we’ve been able to think about is (___) this entire week!” Disgust exclaimed, not necessarily in a bad way, but moreover in a.. realization kind of way. Looking down at the console, which was a deep pink color.
“Isn’t it wonderful!? (___) is so lovely… WE COULD THINK ABOUT THEM EVERYDAY from now on! They’re so kind, sweet, beautiful, and so much more!!” Amia beamed happily while clasping her hands together.
“Says the Love Emotion..” Fear remarked quietly to himself, before sipping his tea. That quickly earned a glare from her, which had him running off in a hurry.
“It’s good though! It proves we’re a genuine partner, and that we’re truly smitten with them!” Joy added, ruffling Amia’s hair as the smaller emotion giggled.
“..They can never be boring, you know?” Ennui, leisurely laid on the couch, said. Laughing a bit.
“BUT, What if they think we’re being too much of an overbearing partner though!?” Anxiety yelped aloud, jumping out of her ‘special’ chair to run up to the console, as if looking for tanything that could be a sign or anything possibly wrong. That only lasted for a moment before she backed away, flapping her hands and pacing around.
Joy stared for a second, smile dropping before sighing, shaking her head in disapproval and a softer expression taking over.
“They could never! They love us, Anxiety. They’re being genuine. Just look at Riley and (___) together right now.” The emotion’s hands rested upon Anxiety’s shoulders, gently leading them towards the console to stare at what was happening with Riley at this very moment.
Riley and (___) were happy with their current circumstance. Genuinely contempt. They were currently star gazing in a nearby park, the moonlight’s soft rays of light hitting the couple’s faces, as if it were a true person- caressing their faces ever so gently. Their hands intertwined, and focused on each other, along with the stars to witness their own date. They really could stay like this forever, leisurely sitting in the lush grass near the jagged rocks of the lake to which the light was reflecting off of against the moving waves.
(___) rested their head upon Riley’s shoulder, eyes slowly closing from the tiredness that’d accumulated over the day. And hesitantly, she leaned her head atop of yours.
They were really here. It wasn’t just some wild and crazy dream that dream productions crafted, but instead it was reality, the meticulous reality that now Riley and (___) live with.
It really was idyllic.

“Speaking of, that does raise one more question.” Disgust said. “What?” Joy asked. “If you’re right and Anxiety is also somehow…expecting, who’s the other parent?” Oh. Oh. Once again, Anxiety felt the attention being turned to her and she wanted nothing more than to sink into the ground and never come out again. They clearly waited for an answer, but how was she supposed to give one? Her gaze switched between Ennui, Fear and Joy. “I..I don’t know…” Link to story: https://archiveofourown.org/works/59212855/chapters/150995167

[BETA HAS BEEN FOUND]
I wrote Anxiety x Fear fanfic, though it doesn’t really have its main focus on the romantic relationship - there are only slight hints. Mostly it’s focused on calm conversations and attempts in helping each other to fight nightmares. So the rating is G and it is closer to Gen than to F/M.
I’m looking for a Beta reader and editor because English is not my first language. My skills are good enough to translate it to English on my own, but it will still require some polishing from a native speaker so there won’t be any big issues left. You don’t have to know another language, you’ll just need to check and edit the already translated text. So if English is your first language, you have an experience in writing and are willing to help – I’ll be glad to accept it! You can contact me through DMs here or text me directly in Discord: @nastyaklimova
Thanks for your attention!

Night Shift - An Inside Out 2 One-Shot
AN: I recently saw Inside Out 2 and loved it a lot! Feeling inspired, I wrote a one-shot fanfic focusing on my favorite characters, Fear and Anxiety.
Plot: While Fear is on Dream Duty, he finds that Anxiety is still awake and is determined to help her.
Relationship Tags: Fear & Anxiety, Fear/Anxiety
Tags: Fluff, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Humor, Mutual Pining
AO3 Link
On the main floor of Headquarters, nine colorful emotions gathered around the console. It was nighttime and after a busy day, their shift was coming to a close. The cool darkness of Riley’s room faded to black as the teen drifted off to sleep, causing the screen to turn off.
“And that’s a wrap,” Joy cheerfully declared. “Good work, everyone!”
The other eight emotions applauded as another great day finally ended. It had been about two months since the school year started, and three months since the five new emotions arrived. Though there had been some infighting at the beginning between the newcomers and the old guard, the ten of them already settled into a comfortable routine as nine of them operated the console with Nostalgia sneaking in now and again to reminisce over a recent memory.
“Fear, you’re in charge of dream duty tonight.” Joy reminded.
Though Fear suppressed the urge to roll his eyes, he refused to completely hide his disdain of dream duty. “Aye aye, Joy,” Fear sarcastically responded with a salute.
“That’s what I like to hear,” Joy responded, brushing aside the contemptuous tone. She leaned in and gave Fear a high five. Even he couldn’t help but smile at her infectious enthusiasm. She then turned her attention to the rest of the group. “As for everyone else, let’s get some shut-eye!”
“Yeah!” Anger agreed. He moved over to Joy and the two shared a high-five before walking off together.
Fear smiled as he watched his friends/coworkers make their way to the bedroom. Sadness and Embarrassment walked together, appreciating each other’s company. Envy bounced over to Disgust while Anxiety and Ennui trailed behind as the latter lethargically pushed herself across the floor like the bored noodle that she was.
“Good night Fear,” the emotions told him in near unison.
“Good night everybody.” Fear replied.
Once everyone left the main floor, he let out an exasperated sigh. He dreaded dream duty. Not because he was scared of the dreams, far from it. But because the dreams themselves were so insipid.
The scenarios were ludicrous, the plotlines were structured terribly, and the dialogue was laughable. But it was part of the job and he had no choice. But just because he had to endure dream duty didn't mean he couldn't have a little fun on the night shift.
Fear ventured in the kitchen to gather his nourishment of choice for the night. He made himself a fresh cup of coffee with cream and sugar substitute and grabbed a box of crackers from the cabinet. After placing the bowl of crackers on a separate chair, the purple emotion smiled contentedly as he relaxed in his seat. He was going to need all the comfort he could get for whatever ridiculous dream he would be forced to watch.
Fear adjusted his spot on the chair, propped his legs on the console, and crossed them. Taking a swig of his coffee, he glanced at the screen. “Alright, what trainwreck of a dream do we have in store for tonight?”
The screen projection turned on to reveal an abandoned grocery store. From Riley’s perspective, she scanned her surroundings. The green and white tiled floors were particularly dirty and a synth-pop song muffled from the loudspeakers. She then made her way through the pasta aisle.
“The grocery store, seriously?” Fear groused. He was used to dreams taking place in school or a haunted house, but his suspension of disbelief was already broken. “So what’s the big set piece this time? Haunted pasta sauce?”
Suddenly, a metal clang rang out. Riley turned around to find a can of Chef Boyardee’s on the floor. After a moment of silence, the can started to chase her around. Fear cocked his brow. Though he was thoroughly unimpressed with this dream scenario, he still felt a small spark of satisfaction in predicting the storyline.
“Eh, close enough.” Fear shrugged his shoulders, taking another sip of his coffee.
He continued to heckle at the screen as the dream played out on the screen. The rolling can of cheap pasta escalated into a swarm of floating shopping lists and a fleet of shopping carts.
“Are they even trying anymore?” He riffed with a disbelieving laugh.
A sudden vibration sound reached his ears. He elicited a shriek as he jolted in his seat. The curled nerve on top of his head stood as straight as a lightning rod. Fear exhaled. No one else should be up at this time of night, and he was certain that Nostalgia would not make this much noise when intruding on the main floor. The only possible source for the vibration was the special chair Joy brought for Anxiety after Riley returned from Hockey Camp-
Fear blinked in realization. He slowly swiveled his seat to find Anxiety, donned in her orange-and-white striped pajama gown and green slippers, lying down in her special chair. She wore a perturbed expression as her eyes were glued to the ceiling. There was no doubt that she was anxious over something.
“Anxiety?” Fear asked.
Anxiety’s eyes widened like a deer in headlights at the sound of her name. The moment she stared at Fear she began to panic. She banged the off button with her fist, stopping the vibrations. In great haste, she adjusted the seat to an upright position. Bolting out of the chair, she cautiously approached Fear, keeping her hands clasped together as she twisted her arms about.
“I’m so, so sorry Fear,” Anxiety fervently apologized. “I didn’t mean to interrupt your dream duty. I want to go to sleep, but I can’t because I’m so worried about Riley’s Spanish test. I want to help her a-and I’ve been debating on whether she should study a little bit more or not.”
Fear empathetically gazed at Anxiety. He knew what it was like to feel unprepared in the face of uncertainty. But it was both his and Anxiety’s obligation to do their part to keep Riley on her toes for the things she can and cannot see. They were kindred spirits in that regard. They both played their part throughout the week to keep Riley in check as she studied for the big test. Earlier in the day, she spent three hours studying; two hours at the public library, thirty minutes before dinner, and thirty minutes before starting her bedtime routine. Fear was confident that Riley had a strong handle on the material and that she could ace the test. He had hoped that Anxiety felt a similar level of confidence as well. But as stared at Anxiety, he could tell that her mind was plagued with varying ‘what if’ outcomes of what could happen if Riley did poorly on the test. But Anxiety tended to focus on the worst-case scenarios, which only fueled her uneasiness.
Anxiety began to pace around the room. “If she doesn’t pass the test, then this might snowball into horrific consequences for her academic future! Or her future in general!”
Fear’s heart broke as he watched her get caught up in her whirlwind of worries. Now he felt compelled to help her out. Though part of him feared that he would say the wrong thing or make things worse, he still could not stand by and watch Anxiety suffer.
He got up from his seat and cautiously approached her from behind. “Hey Anxiety,” he gently tapped her shoulder.
Anxiety jumped a little at the soft touch. Fear felt a moment of apprehension, feeling that he made a miscalculated move. “Sorry!” He apologized. But when she turned around, her expression was a mix of somberness and yearning.
Fear mustered the courage to keep going. He placed his hand on her shoulder once more, thankful that she welcomed the gesture. “I understand your concern, and you did your best to help Riley stay on track for her upcoming test, but she needs to get a good night’s rest for tomorrow and so do you.”
“I know, I know,” Anxiety replied hastily. “But it’s just that I feel so overwhelmed,” she admitted as she began to tear up. “I want to help Riley do the best she can, but I don’t want to overdo it and hurt her again,” her voice began to crack.
Fear sadly stared at Anxiety, even feeling himself tear up a little at how broken she sounded. “Come here,” he said softly. Opening his arms, he enveloped her in an embrace.
He gently rubbed her back in a soothing motion, hoping it would help. To his surprise, he felt Anxiety wrapping her arms around him, tightening the hug. She elicited a choked sob before burying her face into his chest.
Fear continued to embrace Anxiety as she dispelled her tears. He tried to come up with any comforting words, but he was drawing a blank. But then he decided it would be best to show that he cared through his comforting actions.
Soon enough, Anxiety’s heavy breathing eventually evened out and the tears lessened. She loosened her hold around Fear and slowly released herself from the embrace. Anxiety looked up at Fear, her green eyes now puffy.
“Do you feel a little better now?” Fear gently asked.
Anxiety nodded her head. “Yeah,” she confirmed, giving him a little smile.
Fear smiled back at her, glad to hear that she was improving. “Do you want to talk about some potential solutions for Riley’s studying?” He inquired.
Anxiety scrubbed the last of her tears from her eyes. “But what about dream duty?”
They looked over to the screen only to find Riley watching a group of leotard-clad dancers resembling cats performing an elaborately choreographed dance number.
“Well that took a bizarre turn,” Fear commented. He looked back at Anxiety and shrugged his shoulders. “Eh, it looks like the dream can take care of itself. You, on the other hand, are far more important.”
Anxiety smiled softly at the affirming words. Fear motioned over to her special chair. “Come on, let’s take a seat,” he said, giving her a gentle pat on the back. He sprinted over to his chair and dragged it over to meet with Anxiety who returned to her special chair.
Fear placed the chair across from Anxiety so they could talk face-to-face and sat down. “You’re good at coming up with plans, Anxiety,” he complimented, matching his hands together and pointing them at her. “So what do you think Riley could do in the morning to ensure that she’ll do great on her test?”
Anxiety moved her feet back and forth as she gazed at the floor. After a moment of pondering, she looked up at Fear. “Well…she could review the study guide on the car ride to school,” she began.
“A most wise course of action,” Fear confirmed.
“And she can read through it once more during homeroom,” Anxiety continued, sounding more confident. “Oh! And after the test, she can get a head start on her rough draft for the English essay that’s due in two weeks!”
Fear’s face lit up as he snapped his fingers. “Now that sounds like a surefire plan for success!”
Anxiety’s shoulders relaxed. “It feels good to have a plan.”
Fear smiled back. “It does,” he agreed.
But the smile vanished from her face, appearing apprehensive once more. Fear concernedly stared at her. “What’s wrong?”
Anxiety took a deep breath. She placed her hand on her other arm and rubbed it soothingly. “I’m…I’m sorry for interrupting your dream duty and burdening you with my problems.”
“Anxiety, you have nothing to apologize for,” Fear reassured her as he got up from his seat and moved closer to her. He knelt by her side. “And please don’t refer to yourself as a burden because you are a valuable member of the team.” Brushing aside his fears, he gently took her hand into his own. “But if you ever need someone to talk to, you can always come to me.” He said with conviction, despite his cheeks turning a darker shade of purple. “I care about you a lot and I want to help you. So if you feel overwhelmed, you can come to me and we’ll work through it together.”
Anxiety looked at Fear’s hand. Though her cheeks heated up from the surprising gesture, she savored the comfort he provided her with. She threaded her fingers in between his and gave it a gentle squeeze before smiling back at him.
“Thanks, Fear,” Anxiety said softly. “For everything.”
Fear looked down at “I’m happy to help,” he confirmed.
“So do you mind if I camp out on my special chair for the night?” Anxiety inquired.
“Be my guest,” Fear replied. He then thought of an idea that could help Anxiety fall asleep faster.
“You make yourself comfortable, I’ll be right back,” he gently told her while patting her hand before releasing it from his grasp.
Fear sprinted away from the main floor with a clear mission. He approached the bedroom and stealthily entered inside. Careful not to make any noise, he crept over to his bed and grabbed the essentials: a blanket, his favorite nightlight of the nine that illuminated his sleeping quarters, and his beloved teddy bear. With the items bundled in his arms, he returned to the control room, where Anxiety had already lit her lavender-scented candles and retrieved her sleep headphones.
Fear approached Anxiety with the precious cargo. He clutched the star nightlight and his teddy bear to his chest as he gathered the soft blanket before offering it to Anxiety. She graciously accepted the blanket and placed it over herself.
After plugging the nightlight on the wall, Fear approached her with the teddy bear. “I normally don’t do this, but tonight I shall bestow you with my nighttime companion.” He handed the teddy bear over to her.
Anxiety gazed at the adorable plush bear in adoration. “I will protect this precious creature with my life!” She declared.
“I hope that won’t be the case, but I commend the dedication,” Fear noted.
Fear went over to dim the lights and returned to the console. “I’ll do my best to keep my riffing to a minimum and use my indoor voice,” he told her as he brought his chair back to the console.
“Thank you Fear,” Anxiety said as she reclined the chair backward.
“You’re welcome,” Fear replied before turning his attention to the screen.
He continued to monitor the dream and was increasingly baffled by the story choices. Out of curiosity, Fear looked behind to find Anxiety fast asleep, clutching the teddy bear in her arms. She looked so calm and so…beautiful.
He smiled sweetly at her as the nerve on his head turned into the shape of a heart. Taking his hand, Fear pressed it to his lips and blew a kiss to Anxiety. “Sweet dreams, Anxiety.”
To his surprise, he caught Anxiety’s lips curving into a small smile.
The soft smile stayed on Fear's face as he swiveled the chair around to continue his job. Though the screen played out the ridiculous dream, the sight of Anxiety peacefully sleeping replayed in his head. He took another sip of his tea and smiled at the lovely sight.
----------------
Anxiety opened her eyes to find herself on the special chair. She looked down to find Fear’s precious teddy bear safely tucked in her arms. She instinctively hugged the bear while making a note to acquire her own emotional support plushie.
She looked over to see Fear propping himself up on the console, no doubt bored out of his mind from the mediocre dream. Anxiety cradled the bear in her arms as she stared at her kind coworker. Fear did so much for her last night and she wanted to return the favor.
Gathering the blanket and teddy bear, the orange emotion took off her sleeping headphones and slinked off her special chair. Once she stood up, she grabbed the nightlight and discreetly pulled it off the electrical socket. With Fear’s possessions bundled in her arms, Anxiety tiptoed away from the main floor.
She arrived at the sleeping quarters as the other emotions, save for Joy, were still in their slumber. Anxiety quietly moved over to Fear’s bunk. She plugged his favorite nightlight back into the outlet. Adjusting his pillow, she placed his teddy bear in place and tucked it in with his blanket. Smiling at her handiwork, she gave the teddy bear a couple of head pats before heading off to her bunk.
Anxiety quickly gathered her clothes from her drawer. She moved into the closet, got herself dressed, and made her way over to the kitchen.
As soon as she approached the doorway, she found a table filled with plates and a buffet of breakfast foods. Joy happily prepared scrambled eggs by the stove. The cheerful emotion turned around to find Anxiety standing by the doorway and smiled.
“Oh, there you are, Anxiety!” Joy said sweetly as she scrapped the scrambled eggs onto a large plate. “I noticed that you weren’t in your bed and got worried.”
“Sorry about that,” Fear replied as she cradled her hands together. “I had a little trouble falling asleep, but I moved over to the special chair.”
Joy looked relieved. “That’s good. And Fear’s dream duty didn’t distract you?”
“No, not at all!” Anxiety defended as she frantically waved her hands.  “Fear actually helped me out last night by talking to me and being there for me when I needed it most.” She clasped her hands together. “And I want to do something nice for him.”
Joy smiled, glad to learn that Fear stepped up and helped Anxiety through her troubles and even more satisfied that Anxiety wanted to do something kind for him to show her gratitude. “Well, that’s very sweet of you, Anxiety,” She noted.
Anxiety moved into the kitchen and scoured through the cupboards. She looked through the various flatware until she spotted a purple mug. “Aha!” She cheered as she brought it out and closed the cupboard door. Anxiety turned her gaze over to Joy. “So does Fear prefer coffee or tea in the morning?”
“He normally drinks honey lemon tea,” Joy answered without hesitation.
“Great!” Anxiety cheered. She turned her attention back to the cabinets. “Now where are the teabags located?”
----------------
Fear propped his head in his hands, leaning on the console as he stared absentmindedly at the screen. Riley was now rowing a canoe with Bloofy and Pouchy as her companions.
“I have lots of items!” Pouchy happily declared. “Which one do you think will work the best? A basketball? An avocado?”
“A coherent script?” Fear tiredly riffed. Before Pouchy could offer the dynamite, the dream shut off. Riley woke up and turned to her alarm clock to find that it 6:00 AM. Her alarm would not go off for another half-hour, so she chose to lie back down.
“Oh thank goodness, it’s over.” Fear exhaled. Grabbing the remote, he pressed the button which sounded the alarm for everyone to come to the control room. He let out a yawn and stretched out his arms.
“Hi, Fear,” Anxiety called out as she popped up right next to him. Fear shrieked in surprise, clutching his hands against his chest and moving his chair backwards. Anxiety herself yelped and recoiled at the response. After realizing they unintentionally scared each other, they took a moment to calm down before apologizing to one another in unison. “I’m so sorry, Anxiety,” “I-I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you-”
But after hearing their words overlap, they stopped to look at one another. After a moment of silence, Fear was the first to speak up. “Did you sleep well last night?”
“Yeah, I did, thank you,” Anxiety replied. “I, uh, want to give you something,”
She took him by the hand and helped him to his feet. Fear stared at Anxiety’s hand while she led him to her special chair. On the nightstand, he noticed two hot mugs of tea (one purple and one orange) sitting next to each other.
Anxiety let go of his hand and picked up the purple mug. “Here,” She quietly offered Fear the tea. Her eyes shyly darted toward the floor. “I...I wanted to thank you for helping me out last night.”
"Oh thank you, Anxiety, that's very thoughtful of you," Fear said as he gingerly accepted the tea. He inhaled the sweet aroma of the honey lemon tea and blissfully sighed. A good cup of tea was a splendid reward for enduring a long night of dream duty. But if was extra rewarding coming from someone he deeply cared for.
Fear looked at Anxiety. "So, are you ready to take on today?"
Anxiety grabbed her mug of green mint tea. "Yeah, I'm ready to put our plan into action."
The two shared a smile and clinked their mugs together.

“Grace…please. Me and Riley have heard enough of your playlist. Just admit mine is better so we can carry on with our sleepover festivites.” Bree sighed, resting her head on Riley’s shoulder.
“Just one more song! Then I’ll be done.” Grace smiled as she pressed play on Shuffle as she went to her Spotify app, “Whatever song it is…I’m 101% sure you guys will lohooooove it.”
The song played for a bit, the music bouncing around the room as Riley and Bree slowly started to realize what they were allowing themselves to listen to…
“…I-Is this…Peaches from the Mario movie…?” The blue eyed teen snickered, laughing louder as Bree just sadly facepalmed.
The glasses wielding teenager got up from where she was sitting, standing up and basically snatching away Grace’s phone from her palms.
“Okahay, yeahhhhhh…no. I’m turning this off.” The purple cladded girl mused as she did just that, giving the electronic back to the green pajama wearing girl. “So, based on popular vote…which was just me, myself and I…I declare myself the winner of Deciding Who’s Spotify Playlist is the MOST Banger! Or DWSPITMB for short.”
“How come you get to decide what playlist is quote on quote 'the best?!' I think mine is pretty suherb.” The smaller teenager huffed.
Bree adjusted her glasses, raising an unamused brow at her smaller friend as she sighed in disappointment. Riley, though, just chuckled in utter amusement, sitting on her bed criss-cross as she munched on some the leftover popcorn they made earlier in the night.
Bree loved proving people wrong…and Riley loved watching it allllll unfold.
“First off: it’s superb. And second, no it is not! Your playlist just consists of meme songs!” The chocolate eyed girl said matter-of-factly.
The green cladded teenager scoffed, “Oh yeah? Like what?”
“Goofy Goober…Smash Mouth All Stars…It’s Raining Tacos— shall I continue?”
Grace crossed her arms, glancing to the side of her as she wallowed in defeat.
In her defense…although the songs she liked were classified as 'meme songs'…they lowkey kind of ate down…
…Just a bit…
…Juuuuust a tad…?
“No…” The smallest of the three huffed.
“And you!” Bree said as she pointed at Riley, ignoring the small surprised squeak that came out of the blondie, “Your playlist is just straight up Disney songs!! If that doesn’t scream basic I don’t know what does…”
The blue cladded teenager swiflty got up and went towards her best friends which resulted into all of them looking like the formation of a small triangle, “Wooooah woah woah woah! Don’t drag me into this! Disney’s songs are peak and they will continue to stay peak!”
Grace grimaced, rubbing the back of her neck, “After Encanto…Disney kinda fell off I’m not gonna lie, Ri…” She grumbled under her breath. But her dismay, Riley heard it loud and clear..
Crystal clear, to be exact.
“A GIRL WHO HAS 'NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP' IN HER PLAYLIST SHOULD NOT BE TALKING!!!” The girl in blue screamed.
“IT’S GENUINELY A FUN SONG! YOU’RE JUST JEALOUS YOU DON’T HAVE MY MUSIC TASTE! AND AT LEAST MY PLAYLIST HAS A THEME…unlike someone I know…” The black haired teen snapped back, trying not to giggle at Bree’s loud and dramatic offended gasp.
“HEY HEY HEY!! DON’T YOU EEEEEVEN START!!” The girl in glasses yelled, “You wouldn’t know good music if it hit you right in the face!”
“Oho I do so know good music! But you have Laufey, Jack Stauber and Green Day all in the same. playlist!!!” The blue iris wielding teenager scoffed, putting a hand on her hip, “And besides, if your playlist is the 'superb' one, what have I been listening to this entire time on my playlist, huh?”
“Trash.” Bree said plainly and simply, the three best friends locking eye contact with one another for a moment or two before bursting into loud uncontrollable cackles.
The three teen’s laughed at their silliness, all sitting on Riley’s bed as they tried to calm down to the best to their abilities.
Trash.” Grace exclaimed as she tried her best to match Bree’s voice before breaking character and snickering again, “PFFTHAH! Even the wahay yohou said ihat was juhust sohoho fucking peherfect.”
“Ihi dohon’t know whahat cahame ohohover me…i-ihit juhust happened!” The purple cladded teen snorted, pulling out her phone from out of her pocket, “Fohor the Archives?”
“For the Archives.” The tallest teen agreed, all of them getting close to one another to take a picture.
The brown eyed girl pressed the button to encapture the memory through a single photograph, looking down at it happily as she squinted, looking at it more attentively.
Bree screamed in shock, putting her phone face down on the bed as she pulled her hood up, engulfing her face inside of it as she layed on her back, “MY GLASSES! MY. FREAKING. GLASSES!!! THEY’RE UPSIDE DOWN!! WHY DIDN’T YOU TWO TELL ME?!” She cried in embarrassment.
Her two friend’s in question exchanged a look with each other, holding back more small snickers, “Ihi thought yohou were gohoing fohor aha look!” Grace grinned.
“I WASN’T!!!” The purple cladded one huffed, fixing her glasses so they weren’t upside down anymore, “You two are so damn fake…”
“Oho puh-leeeease.” The hazelnut eyed girl sweetly said, wrapping the other in a big bear hug, “You loooooove us.” She teased.
The blondie leaned on her bed-frame, hugging her knees together as she rested her chin on her knees, watching the other two bicker about absolutely nothing.
And suddenly…out of nowhere, Riley’s fond smile turned to…a small, sad one…
She didn’t know why.
She had no idea why.
But all of a sudden…she just felt…sad.
Not, like, depressed sad…
…But not subtle sad, either.
“…I’m gonna miss this…” The taller suddenly blurted out, not really carrying if the other two heard or not…
…But, of course…they heard loud and clear…
…Crystal, even.
“…Miss what, Ri?” The smallest of the three asked casually, giving the blue eyed teen her full attention as Bree looked at her as well.
The blonde rubbed her knuckles slightly, anxiously looking away and avoiding eye contact with the other two, “Just…hanging out with you guys, I guess. Just…being here, y'know? School starts in, like, a week and I really don’t think I’m ready…”
“Don’t remind me…” The girl with glasses whined dramatically, flopping on Grace’s chest as the hazelnut eyed teen happily and gladly held her in her arms tighter, squeezing her comfortingly as she took her hood off from her head, “It’s freaking crazy…I remember us cleaning out our Middle School lockers like it was yesterday…” The green cladded girl grinned with nostalgia.
“Pff…speaking of, you guys remember when I found a year old sandwhich in Ryan’s locker?! That shit was hilarious.” Riley said as the other two laughed.
“That shit was disgusting. I’ve never seen something so…so…hideous…” The girl in purple pajamas fake gagged, “…Well, besides you of course.” The chocolate eyed teen said as she gestured towards the hazelnut eyed teen.
“HEY!” Grace huffed, lightly flicking Bree’s forehead.
The tallest of the three of them let out a short laugh…but, it lasted longer than her usual, genuine laugh…
…This one seemed…forced.
Her laugh’s started to sound a bit choked as tears ran down her face. In alarm, both Bree and Grace went to her side’s immediately, making sure their friend was okay…
…Well, as 'okay' as a crying person could be at the moment.
“Sorry…sorry, gosh…I’m…I-I’m b-being so stupid…” The blondie sniffled, wiping her nose and face with her sleeve. “No…you aren’t.” The girl with glasses reassured as she rubbed the other’s back, “You’re just upset…and that’s okay.”
“But…B-But I’m not upset…”
“…You’re not?” The shortest one of them all asked carefully.
Riley sniffled once more, glaring at her knees, “I don’t…a-at least I don’t think I am. I’m just…scared, I guess.” She explained as more and more tears ran down her face like they were never-ending, “I…I liked Middle School…a lot. I met you guys a-and s-so many other p-people that changed m-my life for the b-better.” The baby blue eyed teen said softly, a wobbly smile stretching to her features.
“I-I was able to f-find myself and know who I-I wanna be!! A-And n-not to mention I-I was even a-able to d-do d-dodgeball on Gym days! Dodgeball!” The blonde exclaimed whilst sobbing.
Grace rested her head on Riley’s shoulder, holding her hand in her’s to stop the taller’s excessive hand rubbing, “Still saluting you for carrying our Dodgeball team...” The green loving teenager murmured.
“B-But now…it’s j-just Middle School a-all over again. A-And I-I’m gonna be the n-new k-kid…” The blue cladded kid sighed as she buried her head on her knees, “A-And I won’t have you guys…”
There was a long enough silence that lasted for a while; all that was heard was Riley’s quiet sobs (well— as quiet as one can get when crying) and Bree and Grace’s breathing patterns.
Grace crossed her arms, giggling, “Uhuh…who said that?”
“You two are gonna be at a different school—” The blonde tried to explain but was almost immediately cut off by her other best friend, “Still doesn’t mean we won’t be there. Phones exist, Ri-Tie. We have our group-chat! We can FaceTime on the weekends and meet up during holiday breaks!” The girl in glasses happily said.
“B-But…w-what if we don’t k-keep in t-t-touch? O-Or we g-get in a-a f-fight through text a-and we d-don’t talk to e-each other f-f-for months?!” The blue cladded teenager exclaimed in exasperation and desperation, holding her friend’s hand in her’s as she tried to calm herself down.
The brown eyed girl squeezed her friend’s hand comfortingly, her eyes softening, “…It seems like your less worried about school…and more worried about…'losing us…'”
Riley just quietly sniffled, looking away in embarrassment.
“Ri…you aren’t going to 'lose us'. We legit aren’t going anywhere.” Grace explained thoroughly.
“But…B-But what if y-you f-f-find someone…better?” The blue eyed girl probed.
“…Better?” Her two friend’s questioned.
“Like…me but…better.” The taller inquired.
“I can’t promise that we won’t…make friends at our new school…but I can promise there will be no person at that place that can replace you. Heck, no one on this Earth can replace you even if they tried. And you wanna know why?” Grace grinned as she squished other’s hand a bit harder.
Riley smiled slightly at the action, squeezing back, “Pff…why?”
“Because you’re Riley freaking Anderson! AWOOGA!!!” The green and purple cladded girl’s both shouted, causing the other to laugh her tears away as she wiped her eyes, “G-Guys…that was so. damn. cringy. PLEASE never do that again…”
“Alas, it is what we do best.” The hazelnut eyed girl said as she dramatically lied down on the bed, “And speaking of which…I think you need some cheering up Ri-Pie…you still look down in the dumps.” And with that, Grace got up and pinned Riley’s wrists to the bed with one hand as the other wiggled teasingly.
The blondie audibly gulped, a small, nervous smile spreading to her features as she blushed slightly.
The brunette giggled at the sight, putting her hand’s around her mouth to make her own voice seem like it was coming out of a megaphone, “Houston! Houston, we haaaaave a problem! It seems like Ri-Ri needs some tickle tickle tickles~!”
“SHUHUT. UHUP—”
“And it seems like she’s insulting me, ladies and gentlefolks…! How unfortunate…” The girl in glasses hummed as she sat where the taller’s head was, using her arms and pinning them up so Grace could tickle her freely, “And to think we could’ve gone easy on you…”
The girl beneath squeaked loudly, hiding her face in her arms, “Guhuhuys w-wahahait! Stahop!!”
“But we haven’t even done anything!” Grace said innocently as she dug her fingers into the blue eyed teenager’s hips, “See? Not doing anything.”
“BAHAH— hic! NO!” The tallest one of the three squeaked, tugging on her arms but because of her purple cladded friend’s hands…she wasn’t able to go anywhere.
“BREEHEE! LEHET hic l-leHET GOhoh ahahand squeak— GRAHAHACE!! STAHAHOP!!” The blondie said as she kicked her feet wildly on the mattress, “STAHAP IT NOHOHOW!!”
The teen in purple rolled her eyes fondly, “I mean we cooooould…but you need to tell us what to stop doing.”
“YOHOU. KNOHOW!” The tallest of the three shouted.
“Hmmmmm…do I~?”
“Y-YEHEHES!!”
“I dunno~! I don’t think I do~!”
“YEHES. YOU. DO!”
“I don’t, actually…” The brunette inquired, letting go of the other’s arms and digging her hands into her underarms whilst kneading her ribs.
Talk about double kill!
The blue iris eyed kid arched her back momentarily, hugging her middles as she belly laughed loudly, “GYAHAH— hic! NOHOH! NOT THERE! NONONOHOH— squeal! PLAHAHEASE!!”
“You’re a huge walking tickle spot, huh, Rile?” Grace snorted as she scribbled the blonde’s sides. “SHUHUHUT YOHOHOUR MOHOUTH!!!”
“Nah…we’re good.” The two tickler’s said sassily, giggling with each other as they said the exact same thing at the exact same time.
Great mind think alike!
“GEHET. OFF!” Cried the blonde, happy tears springing up in her eyes, her irises shooting out of their sockets as Grace unpredictably blew a raspberry on her stomach.
A warning would have been nice…
“NAHAHAHAH!! GRAH— hic! GRAHAHACE!?”
“Yeeeeees?” The charcoal haired teen said innocently as Bree started to tickle Riley’s neck mercilessly.
“OKAHAHAY!! OKAHAY!” The baby blue eyed teen screamed,  “AHALRIHIHIGHT AHAHALRIHIGHT! IHI SURRENDER!!!”
“But we didn’t even get to your favorite spoooooot~!” The black haired teenager smirked, poking the blondie’s foot. “AHAHUGH!! NOHO! I-IHI hic DOHOHON’T HAHAVE hic hic OHONE!!!”
“Oh yeah…that’s right…you have four.” The hazelnut eyed kid taunted lightly, blowing more raspberries on Riley’s stomach as she squeezed her sides. “GRAHAHACE— hic hic NOHO PLEHEHEASE—” The taller squealed, happy tears rolling down her face as the purple cladded one of the three wiggled her fingers over the blondie’s ribs and neck.
“GUHUHUYS— SQUEAK!! IHI’M GOHOHONNA DIE!!!”
“Then. perish.” Bree said simply, tickling Riley’s neck and ribs as the tallest of the group went absolutely mad with laughter. “As I said, no one can replace you, Ri…seriously…I don’t think I met anyone who’s laughed this loud…” The girl in glasses giggled.
“Agreed…we’ll keep in touch, go to resturants and it’ll be perfectly perfect…ish. It won’t be the same like last year but we’ll just learn to adjust—“
“IHIHI GEHET IHAT!!!” Riley screamed, her cackles dying down as her best friend’s lied down next to her; Grace on her left whilst Bree was on her right.
“Promise?” Grace asked once more.
“Prohohomise…” The blonde snorted, wiping her eyes as she playfully glared at her best friends, “Don’t think for a second you guys are off the hook…sleep with one eye open…”
“Will do.” Bree yawned, stretching as she quietly went to sleep, Grace soon following as her eyes closed and drifted to slumber.
Riley smiled fondly at her friend’s…
…Her best friends…
Riley might not go to the same school as them anymore…but that didn’t matter.
The distance that was going to be between her and them would be…strong.
But their love and appreciation for one another was stronger…
And no damn distance would change that…
