man, I'm missing whatever part of the brain recognizes family as a Thing. it's always perplexing to end up being colocated in a house with someone because they're related to me or my spouse. it's especially bad when I dislike them but even when I mildly like them (generally the max liking I am capable of achieving with people I did not deliberately choose to bring into my life), the inner vibe is "okay... but... why is this happening? I do this on purpose every year?..."

maybe indoor cats feel like this but all the time. "don't get me wrong. i'm reasonably content with life. the food is good. but why am I in this house with you & unable to leave."

you know Wat... my other bbc ghosts fandom complaint post reached a lot of people so I'm going to do it again because I have another qualm I want to raise with the people.

I think one of the most pressing examples of this fandom's misogyny is the juxtaposition between how Havers is treated by the fans and how the female side characters are treated by the fans. before I go into this bear in mind I'm mostly on about the fans of the show on other platforms, I don't know much about what the Ghosts fanbase is like here but there's no character limit so here is where I'll yap.

take a look at how people talk about Havers. his less than two minutes of screentime has granted him a large fanbase, ample fanfiction, and a plethora of fanart. then take a look at how characters like Annie and even Eleanor are treated. they have far more screentime and development than Havers and yet... next to nothing for them. the fans ignore them entirely save for a couple of people with sense.

the reasons why are obvious. A) Havers is the love interest of the most popular character- the Captain and B) Havers is a man while Annie and Eleanor are women.

when it comes to Eleanor specifically you could argue that people don't like her because she was a dick to Kitty, but that argument falls through entirely when you realise that if Eleanor were a man people would be downplaying her actions and probably going on about some "guys hear me out...".

the simple reason that a lot of people are not ready to accept is that the reason why the female side characters have nowhere near as much popularity as Havers is because of misogyny. people want to prioritise their white boy yaoi above all else. I would even go as far as to argue that a good portion of the fandom prioritises Havers over the MAIN female characters in the show!

now of course there will be the people that hit me with the "well if you're so disappointed then go make your own fan content🙄" which is an argument I see ALL THE TIME whenever fandom misogyny is brought up. the point is you have to question WHY the women have less fan content in the first place. it's not because the fans of the female characters are "less dedicated" or whatever, it's because the female characters are overlooked by default by a good number of fans for the sake of the men- some of which have absolutely zero development or character to speak of, that the fan content that IS made for the women is completely overshadowed.

I will end this by saying that I don't think that fans of Havers are "bad people" or whatever. I think it's fine if you're compelled by the Captain's backstory and, as a result, take a liking to Havers. it's simply a pattern that I've noticed that even the most bare bones blokes receive more love than the women.

I ALSO don't want people hopping in my replies and reblogs on about some "well we're not OBLIGATED to make fanworks about the women🙄🙄". I never said you were. but maybe look inside of yourself and examine why you're so opposed to caring about the women as much as you do the men.

I was reading all your posts and while I 100% understand your message, and I am not trying to defend the other person. But in the example where the person described Turkey and France, was the problem the way they described Turkey, or the fact that Turkey was described liek that + the way France was described as very very feminine? I am struggling with the word “hyper masculine”, does it mean men with muscle and hair? I hav é tried translating it back into Spanish but I am still confused.

so the issue was not feminine france—a lot of people hc him to be gnc/effeminate and that's ok! the issue was how feminine france was placed alongside turkey being described as this "big strong burly brown exotic muscly man." he's being fetishized explicitly for his masculinity and dominance. when i initially addressed this, i used the word "hypermasculine" to basically mean "exaggerated manliness." a friend told me it could mean "machismo" in spanish, and i believe that fits the situation as well.

throwing in a feminine character exacerbates the issue, since the "innocent curvaceous small gentle white woman with the big brown man from the orient" trope already exists in media and is a big problem:

(this webtoon in particular proves the point further given that the sexy brown man here is wearing clothes reminiscent of ottoman nobles. also apparently this is a 19+ webtoon, so we know he/his presence is meant to be sexualized.)

this is a problem that exists a lot regarding turkey's depiction both in the eastern and western fandom. as the "exotic" character among a cast of mainly white european characters, he is portrayed as this "mysterious sexy man" and is given no other personality that humanizes him like the other european charas get. so in that sense, it is also dehumanizing and racist towards SWANA/MENA men as they are depicted not as a human, but as a sex symbol or trope.

I've been following you for a long time, and this might not matter to you at all, but I find it necessary to say anyways. I'm a hispanic indigenous lesbian living in America and i'm really disappointed by your posts devaluing and speaking against voting this election, especially considering that you don't live in America. My rights are on the line. MANY people's rights are on the line. Politicians and the government aren't our friends, but allowing Trump to be put into office would make things way worse. he checks the university’s official page. he checks the branch off organization and event pages. he checks random posts. he doesn’t give up. it’s torture seeing you in the dining hall this one time and not being able to say anything to you. you have the same big headphones you had on when he saw you that night, and it just draws him to you more. he can just make out you mouthing the words to whatever you’re listening to while you’re standing in line.

one night while he’s taken to looking for you again, he finds you. smiling all pretty on the university’s volunteers page, your headphones still on. he thanks whoever’s listening that the page tags everyone.

your username is a reference to a song (he saw the song in your music highlight, he thinks it sounds good.) you’ve got a joke in your bio, a highlight dedicated to your friends, and a highlight for what he’s gathered is posts of your favorite celebrities.

he knows you’re gonna be annoyed if he just slides up and messages you, the way your face twisted up when a guy approached you and your friends’ table in the dining hall that one time lets him know that. he laughed watching you watch the boy the whole time and roll your eyes when he finally walked off. so he just follows you. and maybe he posts a good pic of him with a song from an artist in your highlight.

for a week, he plays story tag with you. you post a meme that’s obviously about him, he posts a tiktok that’s obviously about you, you post a picture of face and he likes it, he posts a picture of him in his uniform and suddenly your note says “OHHHH MY GOD.” he likes playing, but he cannot keep not having you. so when you put “inshallah he will be mine” in your note, he has to reply.

and from there, the conversation flows. you talk all night, about when he started playing baseball, about what music you listen to, about what books he’s read recently, about how you may have been plotting on him too.

and, like caspian always tells his boys, the rest was history. 3 1/2 weeks culminate into him laughing in the dining hall with you for almost 3 hours, and then walking around campus for 2 more hours. caspian walks you to your car, and, despite being shy about it, asks if you wanna go to the event the university is having the next day.

of course, you say yes. you say yes to the park, too, and the library between classes, and he says yes to a party friday night, and the public library down the road saturday morning.

it’s all lovey from the start, pictures taken like you’re dating, making time for each other like it’s been months. it all sets the scene for the relationship to come. caspian’s so happy he got out of practice early that night.
