            -   mildred is so very hard to read.  gwendolyn tries, oh god, does she try  -  but it’s near impossible to ever know what the other woman is thinking.  she hesitates for a moment,  toying with the idea of reaching out her hands and taking mildred’s within her own but she quickly decides against it and resorts to placing her hands upon her arms instead.  it’s intimate but it still, she hopes,  gives her the space that she thinks mildred prefers.  “  then tell me, mildred. “  it’s hard to mask the desperation in her tone.  “ tell me what it is that you need right now so that i can accommodate.  i’m trying. “ and there it is, the defeat.  façade cracks just a little, unmasking the vulnerable side of gwendolyn briggs   (  the side she’s tried to hard to keep protected. )  “ i want to make this work between us  -  i want to ensure that you’re happy,  that i’m giving you everything that you could want,  that you could need.  but   -  but to be successful,  you’ve got to work with me, my love.  this is a two way street and i’m no mind reader,  despite how much i wish that i was. “

     loneliness is marked in splintered teeth ,     jaw marked from clenching as she reads over smudged words once more .     there’s a frustrated edge to her brushing away of straying tears ,    a deep need to hide that she is anything other than sunshine ,    to ignore that knuckles are bruised from bite wrapped around them .     ISN’T SHE MEANT TO BE A SUMMER GIRL ?     honeyed hair and sky blue eyes and a smile only meant for growing like flowers ,     like roses .     and who could not love a girl like that ?     who but mother with her sharp tongue and biting pen and need to never admit that her problem isn’t with rose herself ,    but a loveless marriage and quiet existence .     it was never rose’s fault that she was father’s favorite ,    that his eyes sought her smiles and believed she shone ,     but he is gone ,    gone ,    gone ,      so what to do with her ?

      smile ,     smile and they’ll never know the wounds underneath ,     that she is just looking for love and finding it anywhere there is a sweet word ,     that she is desperate to rebel just to fill the silence .      what else to be expected from a society queen ?               ❝  of course not ,     i just wish she might ask rather than just straight to the lectures .   ❞
