A-Mi-Kuk
Tumblr media
An fabled creature from Inuit mythology is called A-Mi-Kuk. The Bering Strait in Alaska is where this monster is known to exist. The A-Mi-Kuk is described as a massive, heavy, slimy, moist-skinned creature that has four human-like arms and hands in place of legs, which it uses to both walk on and seize its prey. It is also rumored to be able to emerge from underground burrows in inland lakes. It is said to feed primarily on fisherman and those who are stupid enough to take a sea bathe, but it also eats a lot of fish and saltwater birds.

Oh, I didn’t know that.
I was listening to Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” on youtube, and browsing the comments several people mentioned …
Okay. The song is about the real sinking of the freighter the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior in 1975. And there’s a line in the song:
“In the Maritime Sailor’s Cathedral,
The Church Bell chimed till it rang twenty nine times,
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald”
Which references something that the actual Maritime Church in Detroit did in honour of the ship’s crew. And I just found out in those youtube comments for his song that when Gordon Lightfoot died in May last year (2023), the Maritime Church rang those bells again, this time 30 times. Once for every man on the Edmund Fitzgerald, and once more for Gordon Lightfoot.
That’s … That is a memorial I would be proud to have earned. And proud to give. I do like that. A lot.
Apparently, the Split Rock Lighthouse on Lake Superior also lit its beacon in honour of him.
Sorry. I’m having … extremely maritime sort of feelings over here. Songs and memorials, bells and beacons, and the ways we carry memory forward. That’s … that’s a good memorial. I like that.

Some coast striker concept doodles, mostly to showcase their weirdo double tongue + i love drawing teeth. Also whelps are see through when they hatch, most lose this quality as they grow, but a few (especially in the Deepwater) keep their translucency well into adulthood.
A small fun fact, many humans call coast strikers "grinning deaths" as their toothy snarls can look like a grin to a person. Given their amount of teeth and their two tongues, other AshWings can find them a bit unsettling

Among other questionable choices, I have decided that 'the sea' is my all-purpose tumblr tag for maritime stuff, naval and nautical history and aesthetics—but only for salt water.
Great Lakes naval history, etc. goes under 'great lakes,' if not the name of the individual lake (and whither the Battle of Lake Champlain?) I don't even have a consistent tag for important rivers.

Rogueport's Location
So in Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door at the beginning of the game Peach says the following in a letter to Mario. "Hello there, Mario! I am now on holiday traveling in the Mushroom Kingdom." This implies Rogueport is located within the Mushroom Kingdom or in other words continent. If one looks in the background one of Rogueport they will notice there is a trees in the background, this would imply it's in an lake or inland sea. This would be consistent with a lake or inland sea I have brought up before that is to the South of the Grasslands.
So similar to places like Lavalava Island I bet this body of water is where Rogueport is located. This also explains the presence of Toads and Goombas within Rogueport. This would also imply the Piantas living here moved from Isle Delfino to here.

normal person on tumblr: makes a post about how frustrating it is that there are so few Great Female Villains and how fandoms hate complex female characters in general and no one will let women be morally grey, etc etc etc
