FFXIV Write 2023: Master Post & Round Up!

Seven years of FFXIV Write in the bag! Whether this is your first year or your seventh, whether you wrote seven words or seven thousand, GOOD JOB, EVERYONE! And a thank you, as always, to @sea-wolf-coast-to-coast for continuing to host and provide prompts for us year after year.

As with last year, I will not be checking my word count or any other sort of stats; I ended up focusing on that in past years to my detriment, and the point of this challenge is to have fun! It's enough for me that I wrote every day. :D

BUT! October is here--and that it means it's time for my own personal challenge: FFXIV Edit! The heart of FFXIV Write is just to write, regardless of mistakes or roughness, but I do like to go back and revisit my ideas and see if my brain wants to put some more polish on my entries. So, throughout October, I will continue my tradition of posting each of my prompts to AO3 once a day and take the time to give them an edit or expansion or rewrite as I see fit.

Because a youth-obsessed married nomadic masterful rapey pedophile textually going after athletes who could shut down his blood flow, oxygen supply, and cause serious physical harm is smart. That’s why it’s deleted.

YouTube video on the Prince’s Trust channel—Prince William, Prince Harry & The Prince of Wales Interview with Ant and Dec. A 2006 interview with the serpent trio on supporting unknown artists with grants and self-esteem, not kidnapping and trouncing on them, which is my royal experience. Kushal Punjabi—dancer-choreographer, from the musical, Andaaz, he won the reality game show, Zor Ka Jhatka, India’s Wipeout, the physical obstacle course, edging out 28 contestants. He hung himself at home in Bandra West, Mumbai. December 2019. He has a son, Kian.

Sejal Sharma—known for her role of Simmy Khosla in the show Dil Toh Happy Hai Ji, about a free-spirited girl named Happy Mehra. She was auditioning for lead roles when she hung herself in her flat at Royal Nest in Mira Road East, Mumbai. January 24, 2020. She was 27.

Vaishali Takkar—tv actress, best known for the popular Hindi series, Super Sisters, a show about close siblings and their super powers. The show is available on YouTube and has millions of views. Her Insta page has over 500K followers. She took her life on October 15, 2022.

Former air hostess of Qatar Airways turned Bollywood actor, Noor Malabika—hung herself in her Lokhandwala, Mumbai flat a few months ago. June 10, 2024. Her body was decomposed. Friends identified her by the crown tattoo on her wrist and her name underneath.

Old Art: Inktober 2022, part 2

Continuing on from last time, here's days 16-31. Sorry it took longer to get to than I expected.

Day 16: Fowl More issues with the scanner! Why didn't I just find something to weigh down that edge? Anyway, this one was fun to draw, with a mix of various mircon pens, including brush tip ones for those big, chunky lines. The wings are... less than ideal, but I think the twisting neck of the swan turned out well. The swan is one of those animals that looks beautiful, until it's angry, and then suddenly it's terrifying, with innumerable pseudo-teeth like a mouth full of needles. As October is the month of spooky things, I leaned into that.

Day 17: Salty ...Oh come on, you were doing so well with the scanner, almost perfect in fact, but you went back to the phone camera again? Come on. The look is kind of iffy as well, just like the Crabby one featuring these same two characters. I think the weird face on the mom was intentional, though, in order to match the unintentionally weird look of her previously.

Day 18: Scrape Now there we go, there's a nice, clean scan, and an image I'm proud of. Girl in maid outfit, sharpening her cleaver thing. I think it's a girl, at least. If I recall, some degree of ambiguity was the goal. I did still screw up the hands kind of and made that arm chunkier than I wanted, but making heavy use of grey ink let me actually draw something that would read as black without being pitch black and indiscernible. The hair was drawn with an unknown blue-purple fountain pen ink. Really wish I could remember which one that was.

Day 19: Ponytail More adventures in brush-tip micron pens. This is a redraw/other angle of a character I drew just before Inktober 2022 began, but I don't think I quite captured him in the same way. His legs also ended up weirdly stubby here.

Day 20: Bluff Ahhhghhhhh, bad scan again, and it made key parts of the art blurry. Damn. I should really re-scan this one. At least the image is alright, even if one shadow is distractingly dark. I chose to shade this largely with horizontal lines mostly as an experiment, which I think worked out decently and would have worked better if I had committed even more to it. The subject here is the man from the previous day, standing on the topographic feature called a bluff. The best part of the image, I think, is the way I worked the number and prompt into the river.

Day 21: Bad Dog A grotesque, monstrous creature, vaguely canid, with no skin and spikey bits all over. Bit of hair here and there. Overall, I like it. Don't really have much else to say.

Day 22: Heist This anatomy sucks but I drew it quickly, more quickly than something that took up this much of the page normally would. Evidently, I even managed to get it to scan properly! This is not meant to be any character in particular, by the way.

Day 23: Booger You ever just sneeze out an entire slimegirl? I like several things about this, from the way I was able to give the look of transparency to how swollen the sick man's face looks. I'm sure I've drawn plenty better, but I do quite like this one, gross as it is.

Day 24: Fairy Call me old fashioned, but personally I believe fairies should be nude. Well, okay, Touhou Project fairies do really well with big poofy dresses or even american flag pattern spandex, but other than that, keep 'em naked.

Day 25: Tempting All across the Halloween-observing world (i.e. the United States and not much of anywhere else), children are asked to simply not touch a bowl full of candy, sitting out for anywhere from the day leading up to trick-or-treating to all month long. Imagine! Here, we see a child eyeing up a brass bowl full of all sorts of treats. The temptation is palpable.

Day 26: Ego Max Stirner, father of Individualist Egoism, wields an AK, wearing a shirt with torn-off sleeves, with a waifish girl clutching his chest. Need I say more?

Day 27: Snack Another kind of goofy one from a perspective sense and I could have afforded to put more pink on that pig in the front. However, I'm overall happy with the chonky dragon design. Hog after hog has gone down his gullet, and now he looks a little like one himself.

Day 28: Camp I enjoy making recurring characters that exist only for each Inktober. As it turns out the girl(?) from Scrape and the guy from Ponytail and Bluff are either an item or good friends. And hey, look, that cleaver works as an axe to gather and split firewood! I did better with the treeline here than I normally do when I try to draw such a thing. Plenty of room for improvement still. At least this one has a decent amount of color.

Day 29: Uh-Oh Due to the ancient subject matter, I chose to use entirely brown tones to give this one a sepia look. The ancients had cats, and by all accounts I've ever read, their behavior has not changed a bit throughout the entire course of the history of feline domestication. Here, we see a cat which has located a bucket of something, left carelessly on a ledge. Below, a just minding his own business is about to have a bad day. Is this scene Roman? Greek? Something else? I don't know, but it's ancient something somewhere somewhen, or maybe even pure fantasy. No matter the circumstance, no matter the time or place or plane of existence, cats will cause problems on purpose.

Day 30: Gear An amorphous creature with a gear incorporated into its body and other gear around its gaping maw. It is an uneven, asymmetric, shambling beast. One of its hands is even beginning to turn gear-like, with gear teeth on the back side of each digit. I think the best part of this piece is the mouth. Gear piece here were colored with Diamine Ancient Copper ink.

Day 30 31: Farm Oops. This one was rough because I was busy all day and couldn't think of the perfect thing to draw for the entire day up until the evening, when I suddenly chose to embark on a pumpkin field... Or a jack-o-lantern field, rather. They're naturally like that, at least on Halloween. For something I rushed at the end of the day, I honestly don't think it looks half bad, and I'm glad I actually made it full color, even if the coloring is sloppy. Not that any other days were much less sloppy. And yes, I did write 30 there instead of 31. I didn't notice until the next morning. Here, I've put a transparent white square and a yellow numeral "1" on top of it, to correct the day while retaining a legacy of my error

The Dimensional Pocket Knife

Need a screwdriver? a pen? Maybe a crowbar to open that locked chest? Say no more, the Dimensional Pocket Knife has all you need and more!  ...Well, most of the time.

The Dimensional Pocket Knife starts with 5 charges, and at the end of each day restores 1D4 +1 charges (to a max of 5). Upon use, a player can try to pull a tool of their choice from the pocket knife. They must roll a WIS saving throw, against the DPK's DC of 13. On a successful roll, the player draws the tool they desire. On a failure, the player instead rolls a D100, and draws the corresponding tool from the below list. (NOTE: the DPK works using the rules of Hammerspace, and so can draw tools much bigger than itself from it’s body, e.g, a spear, a crowbar, etc. The DPK itself is the size of a standard pocket knife)

It was an important milestone in what he hopes will be a long, successful career, but Gianluca Busio’s first professional goal was far from pretty.

In fact, he scuffed his 94th minute tap-in in Sporting KC’s 4-1 win at the Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday. Not that the 16-year-old attacking midfielder was worried about that after the fact.

“When the ball was coming across, I was thinking that this could be it,” Busio told MLSsoccer.com over the phone on Thursday. “Everything was going through my head; all the happiness, all my family. Then I put it in and I couldn’t believe I actually scored a professional goal. It was just a great feeling.”

He’ll remember it for the rest of his life but, aside from the milestone, the goal wasn’t particularly noteworthy. It certainly wasn’t a demonstration of what makes Busio one of the top prospects in American soccer. For that, we need to go back 15 minutes, to a pass that wasn’t even completed.

With the match tied 1-1 in the 79th minute, Busio, who came on in the 63rd, stationed himself with his back to goal in a small pocket of space just outside the top of the box. Roger Espinoza found him, but his pass was elevated. It left Busio in a difficult position. The conventional play would’ve been to try to bring the ball down and keep possession, but Busio instead played it directly out of the air, flicking the ball over his left shoulder and toward goal. If not for an important interception by Whitecaps center back Aaron Maund, the pass would’ve put SKC striker Khiry Shelton in for a one-on-one opportunity.

It didn’t quite come off, but the play, which was reminiscent of Busio’s assist in Kansas City’s 1-0 win at Houston in August, showed the smarts, technical ability and confidence that have SKC head coach Peter Vermes raving about his talented teenager.

“He has a real attacking mind,” Vermes told MLSsoccer.com. “He positions himself well between the lines, he knows where he wants to go with the ball, he’s calm in tough situations. If you remember his first assist, we played against [Houston] and… a ball got played into him and he played it first-time, sort of half turned in behind the defender, and then [Diego] Rubio tucked the ball in the back of the net. He almost did the same thing last night with Shelton. He just has a mind that other players don’t. Most don’t think or attempt or see that, and that piece is now starting to come to the forefront. It’s really good. It’s really good to see.”

He’s shown exciting flashes, but it’s important to note that Busio is still nowhere near a finished product. He’s played just 163 minutes in seven career MLS appearances, only one of which was a start. It’s clear that he’s skilled, but the United States youth international still has plenty of work to do before he even becomes a regular with SKC. Tagging him as a surefire future star would be premature and presumptive.

Listen to Vermes, however, and you get the sense that might not be the case much longer.

From the moment he left his family in Greensboro, North Carolina to join the SKC academy at 14 in the summer of 2016, Busio, who also considered joining the Seattle Sounders and Philadelphia Union youth setups, has outpaced all expectations.

Last August, after just one year in the academy, he became the second-youngest signing in MLS history when he inked a Homegrown deal. Vermes and SKC initially planned for him to spend most of this year with their USL team, Swope Park Rangers. That instinct was driven home early in preseason, when the 5-foot-7, 135-pound Busio was physically dominated in an exhibition match against another MLS team. That game could’ve been a blow to his confidence. Instead, Busio used it as a wakeup call. He knows he should become faster and stronger as he gets older, but he realized he’d be at a physical disadvantage throughout 2018. If he wanted to play this year, he’d have to compensate with his feet and mind.

“Playing with guys that are a lot older and physically bigger and stronger than you, you’ve got to try to keep up with them with your foot skills and moving the ball and all that,” he said. “That’s part of my game that I don’t feel behind on. Physically, they’ll have the advantage on me, but if I’m better with my feet and I’m quicker, then it’s not going to make a difference. I want to make sure I improve on making sure every touch is clean, every pass is to the correct foot, everything like that. That’s part of my game where I can clearly excel and be better and I don’t have to worry about being the biggest or strongest.”

He started the season primarily with Swope Park, but his continued improvement and a run of injuries for SKC prompted Vermes to scrap his plan of stashing him in USL. Busio made his first MLS gameday roster on May 27. He’s remained there for 14 of second-place SKC’s subsequent 19 MLS matches, including each of their last 12. All signs point to him being a significant option for the club’s final two regular season matches at first-place FC Dallas on Sunday and against third-place LAFC on Oct. 28, as well as in the playoffs.

According to Vermes, Busio’s maturity has been what’s kept him in the squad. Unlike many young pros he’s dealt with in the past, Vermes said that Busio isn’t subservient to his older teammates on the field. He’s not worried about feeding Espinoza or Graham Zusi if they’re loudly calling for the ball. He’s only committed to making what he believes to be the right play.

“He has the utmost respect of his teammates, and a lot of those guys have been around for a long time,” said Vermes.  “It’s amazing. A lot of the guys spend time with him because they know that he listens and he tries to absorb as much as he possibly can, but at the same time he goes out and he has the confidence to try to do those things.

“He’s just such a mature kid that I forget sometimes that he’s 16-years-old. In a very short amount of time, in one season in MLS really, his adaptation has honestly been incredible…. He’s gotten this opportunity and he has not just sat back and said, ‘OK, I’ve made it. Now I’m here.’ He continues to work really, really hard, he understands his place in the team and is always prepared every time we call on him. That’s a great quality to have because not all players have that.”

If he continues to progress, that mindset will no doubt serve Busio well in the future. Just what that future will entail, of course, remains to be seen. He does hold Italian citizenship through his father. That’d smooth his path to a European club, several of whom showed interest before he signed with SKC. Busio didn’t think he was ready to head across the Atlantic then, but he did say joining a European club is an eventual career goal. For his part, Vermes acknowledged that SKC could one day sell him, whose contract runs through 2020 with team options for 2021 and 2022.

But all that’s off in the distance. Until then, Busio, Vermes and SKC will continue trying to transform the talented teen from a hot prospect into a full-blown, productive pro.

“I think he’s one of those players that has the ability to be special,” said Vermes. “He’s in one of those positions that are hard to develop: attacking No. 10. He’s a guy that can give the final pass, can score a goal, can make the goal on his own with a pass, can make a goal on his own with his own dribble or what have you. I really think the sky’s the limit. The kid just has great qualities.”

Iran and nuclear deal

Iran’s Energy Resurgence is not at Risk as U.S. Grows More Confrontational Heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran did not look certain to stall already challenging efforts by Iran to attract billions of dollars in foreign investment for its oil and gas industry.This is my question! Iran finally signed its first major energy investment contract in early July with French energy giant Total!! New legislation, which imposes further sanctions on Iranian groups and individuals aiding the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iran's ballistic missile program, has ignited a firestorm in Tehran, where officials say it undermines the landmark 2015 nuclear accord. The bill, "Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act," imposes additional sanctions on Russia, Iran, and North Korea. Passed by the Senate on July 27, the bill has been sent to President Donald J. Trump for final approval, which he is expected to give. Though the bill does not directly specify measures against Iran's energy sector, the deteriorating relations between Washington and Tehran will not almost certainly further deter potential foreign oil and gas investors. They already are not treading cautiously in Iran for fear of running afoul of existing U.S. non-nuclear sanctions that don't affect the financial and banking sectors and impose complex regulations on companies seeking to do business in Iran. Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arguedthe new bill could "affect successful implementation" and reduce the economic benefits of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), or nuclear deal, which took effect in January 2016. President Hassan Rouhani has also made unspecified threats that Iran will respond with retaliatory measures if the bill targeting the country's ballistic missile program becomes law. The Total-led project to help develop a portion of the massive South Pars gas field Iran shares with Qatar is worth almost $5 billion. Even this represents only a small fraction of the $200 billion of investmentIranian officials say the country needs to rehabilitate and expand its aging energy sector over the next five years. Iran's crude oil production has increased by around 900,000 barrels per day (kb/d) since international sanctions were eased on January 16, 2016. However, production capacity has plateaued at around 3.8 million barrels per day (mb/d) and foreign investment and advanced technology is needed for further growth. Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh recently announced a higher crude oil production target of 4.7 mb/d by 2021, which looks extremely ambitious even under the best of circumstances. Trump Plays His Hand on china The newest congressional action came one day after the Trump administration reluctantly recertifiedthat Iran is in compliance with the JCPOA, which is required every 90 days by Congress. Trump only signed the certification at the eleventh hour and numerous reports suggest he is not prepared to recertify Iran's compliance in October, when the next review comes due. The U.N.-brokered nuclear accord was negotiated with Iran by the five permanent members of the Security Council (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) plus Germany and the European Union, and eased international sanctions in exchange for Tehran limiting development of its nuclear program and agreeing to strict international monitoring of its nuclear-related activities. Trump, however, argued during the presidential election campaign the JCPOA was "the worst deal ever" and said he planned to scupper it once elected. Trump clashed with the Defense and State departments over certifying Iran's compliance as the midnight deadline on July 17 approached, with officials from both agencies arguing that the agreement achieves the overriding objective of halting Iran's nuclear development plans. Even as he signed the recertification, he created a team of like-minded loyalists within the White House to explore options to retreat from the deal. Trump could revoke the JCPOA at any time since final authority rests with the executive powers of the president, a mechanism adopted by the administration of former President Barack Obama to bypass congressional objections to the accord. If it were to do so, however, the White House would open a Pandora's box of problems that would severely worsen already poor relations with European allies, set up a confrontation with Iran, and necessitate the development of a new policy approach toward the regime in Tehran. For international oil companies, entering into new business contracts in Iran may be untenable if the Trump administration upends the JCPOA or threatens to do so every 90 days. Unintended Consequences America is playing with china and North Korea The controversial "Countering America's Adversaries" sanctions bill and the Trump administration's threats to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal have strained already fraught U.S. relations with European allies. The United States and Europe have worked hand-in-glove in coordinating a united policy with regard to Russia since the end of the Cold War, but the Trump era has ushered in policy changes that have rankled EU officials, who promptly urged Washington to maintain coordination on Russian sanctions with its allies and G7 partners. The EU raised strong objections to the legislation since it includes new secondary sanctions on Russia's energy industry and cautioned that "the US Bill could have unintended unilateral effects that impact the EU's energy security interests." The EU is already at odds with Trump's very public condemnation of the Iran nuclear deal and threats to abandon the hard-won international accord. Stepped-up efforts by the United States to withdraw from the accord could potentially see European energy companies sidelined from working in Iran but, at the same time, they may also make firms more defiant if there is an international consensus condemning a unilateral move by Washington. Equally, the new congressional legislation targeting Moscow will in all likelihood lead to even stronger energy ties between Russia and Iran at the expense of European firms. Soon after the bill was passed in the House of Representatives Russia announced it had signed a memorandum of understanding to develop more Iranian oil fields. Collateral Damage for Iran's Energy Projects Expectations were high that foreign oil and gas companies would flock to Iran after France's Total signed the first major energy investment deal with the country's oil ministry in more than a decade. Iranian officials hailed the contract with Total as opening a new chapter in the country's energy history but other companies still remain wary, and even more so following the escalating confrontation between Washington and Tehran. Iran has been struggling for two years to attract international oil and gas companies to invest in its energy sector, an effort complicated by a combination of poor contract terms, stiff opposition to foreign investors from political hard-liners, a history of difficult business relationships, and a reputation for widespread corruption. U.S. non-nuclear sanctions on Iran have also created a web of financial regulations that need to be navigated, and that leave companies vulnerable to hefty penalties if they inadvertently violate sanctions. Prior to the JCPOA, the U.S. Department of Justice fined European banks a staggering $15 billion for violating sanctions, and fears are the Trump administration could be even more aggressive in imposing penalties. The much-debated Iran Petroleum Contract that will govern joint ventures with international oil companies has been subject to protracted review and criticism by Iranian officials. However, the re-election of Rouhani has eased the passage process. The contract was still being reviewed in April by the Supreme National Security Council but after more than 150 changes, it is now basically a framework agreement with specific details of the contract negotiated privately with individual companies rather than a rigid, fixed contract for all projects as originally drafted. Zanganeh was called to defend the contract with Total before Parliament and was given the seal of approval despite criticism from hard-liners. In fact, only bare-bone details of the agreement have emerged and there has been speculation that a number of concessions were made by Iran to get the contract done, including a favorable exit strategy for Total if the deal goes south. Total is the operator at 50.1 percent of a consortium including the China National Petroleum Corp with 30 percent and the National Iranian Oil Co (NIOC) subsidiary Petropars. The contract for South Pars Phase 11, worth an estimated $4.8 billion, is for 20 years and expected to have a capacity of 2 billion cubic feet per day or 400 kb/d of oil equivalent, including condensate, with gas production online in 2021 and sold into the domestic market. Iran's Major Oil and Gas Fields Iran estimates that it needs $140 billion in foreign investment to increase oil production to 4.8 mb/d and natural gas output to 45 billion cubic feet per day by 2022, but these targets have appeared overly ambitious and now even more so given the deteriorating relationship between Tehran and Washington. NIOC is hoping to finalize 10 contracts by the end of the current Iranian calendar year, March 20, 2018, and no doubt the bulk of the deals will be with Russian companies. It has signed 33 oil memorandums of understanding with 28 domestic and foreign firms since sanctions were lifted, with Russia inking the largest share. NIOC reported Russia set a record for foreign contracts on July 18 following the signing of a memorandum of understanding to develop the Shadegan and Rag Sefid fields in the southwestern Iran. The Oil Ministry has qualified almost 30 companies to bid on projects but officials have a history of overstating progress on contracts and no significant contracts with other major European energy companies appear to be in the works. Royal Dutch Shell signed a preliminary memorandum of understanding in 2016 to explore the Yadavaran field but has yet to make a serious commitment given the many uncertainties in the current political climate. The inevitable collateral damage from Washington's new non-nuclear sanctions and the Trump administration's more confrontational approach toward Iran have raised the geopolitical risk premium for companies looking to invest in Iran's oil and gas sector. Trump could use his executive powers to overturn the agreement but it is unlikely European partners would endorse such a move, so a decision of this magnitude would come with an enormous reputational cost to the United States. Nonetheless, while international energy firms have long experience operating in highly volatile political environments, the escalating risks in the coming months and years from a capricious U.S. president and an aggressive Congress may be too high for even the boldest companies. For Iran, reaching the psychologically significant pre-sanctions production level of 4 mb/d may be the best that it can hope for now.
