Y/N and Lewis had always been best friends, some would even say they were conjoined at the hip. The two met when they were in high school, Lewis being 2 years older than Y/n, yet due to her smartness was able to be in the same class as him seeming that she skipped two grades. She supported Lewis through his early stages of racing, attending races and helping him with strategies whenever she could, as he supported her on her journey to becoming a Lawyer by helping her with studies and research; going as far as to staying up late at night risking his strict schedule for her.

They had been through it all, witnessing each other's passes and fails, their up and their downs, their light and darkness and let's not forget the most important at the moment which was their relationships. they witnessed and jealously supported each other's relationships as Y/n dated the most 3 guys while Lewis had his reputation of changing girls every two weeks-luckily if it even lasted that long. All this being to the fact that they are in love with each other but out of fear say nothing as to not ruin the friendship. Then came graduation where they both had to separate for weeks to months because of studies and work, only seeing each other once or twice every six months. Overtime they had found themselves back together solidly as Y/n started to work as a Nurse in Formula 1. Her job was to check over a pilot who was involved in a crash and to write down all the data for the doctor to be aware of what they're working on.

This particular day, Lewis had been sent off the track by Fernando who drove into his rare wing which resulted in them both spinning into the tires. they were both led into the office and Y/n immediately ran to hug her best friend. "Lew-bear, are you okay?! Take a seat I'll come to you after I've examined Nando since I was instructed to. she went off to check over Fernando and analyze for any sign of injuries, it didn't go unnoticed by Lewis that Fernando was shamelessly flirting each time he said something. This made him angry as he knew that not a lot of women were able to resist the charm that he had. he watched on as Fernando laid gentle touches to her hand and held it longer than normal each time, she asked him to pass some things, the way he looked at her as if she held all the answers to all the problems of the world and it angered him as in his mind, he should be the only one to look at her that way. in a way to distract himself from starting a fight, he decided to listen to some music and scroll through Instagram.

The torture finally ended as Fernando was cleared to go, he left after giving her a hug and patting Lewis on the shoulder. Y/n packed everything away and made her way over to where Lewis was seated as she realized he wasn't in the mood to talk so she started her inspection and ended it quickly to let him go. "I know that you aren't in the mood to talk so when you're ready, you give me a call ok?" She asked as she Lewis into a hug that he didn't reciprocate but instead looked at her as if she was dead to him and pushed her. "No thanks, maybe you should go listen to what Fernando has to say. It might be more interesting!" he spat before walking out the after giving her one last dirty look. Y/n stood there in tears, shocked and confused as to what the man she calls her best friend meant. she lazily packed up her thing and went straight back to the hotel, not bothering to wait for him to be done with his work.

Meanwhile, Lewis was beating himself up for how ill-mannered he had been with how he naughtily spoke you Y/n. on the way back to the hotel he shed a few tears, feeling as if he had disappointed everyone and everything he stood for as he replayed the incident in his head. The car came to a stop in the garage, and he slowly got out making his way to their shared suite, entering to hear the showers on in her room he entered and sat on her bed to wait for her. The showers had stopped, and rumbling could be heard as she got dressed before the door opened and she appeared in sight.

"I'm sorry" Lewis said lowly when she turned around and saw him. "I just couldn't handle the anger that I felt while watching him carry on with you like that" he said shamefully with his head hung low. "Lew, I'm not understanding what you're saying to me" Y/n replied as she thought he wasn't saying what she was thinking. 'Let me make it clear then. Y/n I'm in love with you and I've been this way since high school, I just didn't do anything about it because I was scared you'd reject me because of my behaviour back then. I kept quiet and let you live on but i panic when i saw you doing nothing about Fernando's flirting because I thought you were interested and that was why I pushed you away. I understand if yiu never want to speak to me again after this but atleast consider forgiving me, please?" Lewis pleaded as Y/n just smiled at his gentlemanly nature.

Y/n walked up to him pulling him down into a soul shaking kiss that left his head spinning when they broke apart but managed to understand what she was saying. "i forgive you Lew-bear. I did the moment you walked away because i knew that no matter what, that you'd always come find me when you were ready to talk" she said that had him smilling widely to the point that his eyes disappeared. He engulfed her into a hug as they stared at each other with nothing but raw love in their eyes. They finished whatever needed to be don and went to bed, feeling happy and content in their new status and Boyfriend and Girlfriend.

I just finished reading chapter one and I love it so far!! but j do have a few questions-

1. why does Frances have a crutch? did she actually have one historically?

2. how old is everyone?

Frances was said to have been born with a swollen hip and thigh, such injuries being caused by a “careless” nurse. Shortly after her birth, the doctor had to cut off flesh. So, I made the personal headcannon she had a small crutch as this would have possibly caused a limp. But also just self-indulgent disability representation.

Hamilton said in his memoirs; “On his resignation, 31st of January, 1795, he left Philadelphia and went to the house of General Schuyler, in Albany, where he remained until the summer, when he returned to New York and resumed his business as a lawyer.” [x]

Who Died First? A German Torpedo And An Irish Autopsy Roil A Cincinnati Courtroom

Victor E. Shields was a well-to-do Cincinnati liquor merchant. His wife, Retta Cohen Shields, came from a family of means. Mr. Shields wrote a will leaving everything to Mrs. Shields. Mrs. Shields wrote a will leaving everything to Mr. Shields. Both wills were simple and straightforward, plain as day.

All was well until a torpedo launched by a German U-Boat sank the RMS Lusitania on 7 May 1915. Mr. and Mrs. Shields were both passengers and, at least in the days following the horrible tragedy, were assumed to have died together and simultaneously among the 1,198 lives lost on that fatal day.

Neither Mr. Shields nor Mrs. Shields, nor their attorneys, had considered the possibility that a German submarine might shuffle both of them from this mortal coil concurrently. According to the accepted standards of the law, if the Shields did die at the same time, Mr. Shields’ estate would have reverted to his heirs, and Mrs. Shields’ estate would have reverted to her heirs. But, if either was proved to have died first, that person’s estate would have passed to the surviving spouse, leaving nothing for the heirs of the first to die.

The Shields had no children, but siblings and other relatives expressed a great deal of interest in determining who got all the money. Lawyers for the potential heirs of each spouse rushed to the Hamilton County Courthouse and filed a series of motions that constitute one of the strangest court battles in all of Cincinnati history. The courtroom drama dragged on for nine months and all of it hung on a single question: Who died first?

That question lingered without hope of resolution for more than 70 days until a very much deteriorated corpse washed ashore at Castle Gregory, a tiny hamlet in County Kerry in the far west of Ireland. The sea-mangled body wore the remnants of a Lusitania life belt. Letters found in the jacket pocket, an engraved watch and a monogrammed penknife all proved beyond any doubt that these were the earthly remains of Victor E. Shields.

At this revelation, Cincinnati attorney Sidney G. Stricker, representing the estate of Victor Shields, sprang into action. He wired the United States Consul General in Ireland to have the body of Victor Shields transported post haste to Cork, the nearest Irish town with a creditable medical college. There, an autopsy determined that Shields’ death was not caused by violence or injury as in an explosion. Nor had he drowned. The evidence suggested he died of exposure or shock, most likely exposure, and that death had occurred several hours after his last meal.

That disclosure raised the question of Retta Shields’ death. Her body was never found. Attorney Stricker told the Cincinnati Enquirer [21 August 1923]:

“To complete the chain of evidence I prepared at once and mailed through the Cunard company a printed questionnaire to each of the surviving passengers of the Lusitania, which contained a picture of Victor E. Shields on one side and of Retta Shields on the other. I propounded the same questions as to each, which were in substance, when, where, and under what circumstances they last saw Victor E. Shields and Retta Shields alive, before or after the ship was torpedoed, and what conversation, if any, they had with them at such time.”

Amazingly, almost all the survivors returned the questionnaire, many with heart-rending accounts of chaos and panic and loved ones lost as the giant ship sank. Several contained very precise information about the whereabouts of the Shieldses before and after the fatal explosion. One response, in particular, yielded conclusive evidence that Mrs. Shields had died first. According to Attorney Stricker:

“Among the numerous letters was one from a woman who sat at the same table in the dining salon with both Mr. and Mrs. Shields at luncheon as late as 10 minutes after 2 o’clock, which was 10 minutes before the ship was torpedoed. She testified that Shields left the table first, stating he was going up on deck; that Mrs. Shields left the table later, stating she was going to her cabin to prepare their luggage for disembarkation.”

The Shields cabin was very close to the point of impact of the torpedo, explaining why Mrs. Shields was never seen after the explosion. In all probability she was killed in the detonation or drowned immediately after because the ship rolled toward the gaping hole blasted by the torpedo as seawater poured through it into the hull. Other passengers testified they saw Mr. Shields rushing madly about on deck, wearing a lifebelt, looking frantically for his wife. The Lusitania sunk just 18 minutes after the torpedo’s impact.

The evidence overwhelmingly indicated that Retta Shields died within minutes of the torpedo’s explosion and that Victor Shields died of shock or exposure several hours later, floating in the ocean. The entirety of Retta Shields’ estate therefore legally passed to her dying husband as he succumbed to the elements.

Despite conclusive evidence that Victor Shields had survived long enough to inherit his wife’s estate, both sets of heirs reached an amicable agreement in February 1916, almost nine months after the submarine attack that killed Victor and Retta. According to the Enquirer [3 February 1916]:

“From the start heirs of Mr. Shields were disposed favorably to the memory of his helpmate, and this state of mind tended to bring about a speedy adjustment.”

Although few details were announced, it appeared that Mrs. Shields’ heirs received the property she had inherited from her parents and some of the insurance settlements. The bulk of the couple’s property went to heirs of Victor Shields. Attorney Stricker provided the sad conclusion to the saga:

“The body of Victor E. Shields was subsequently returned to the United States and was buried at the United Jewish Cemetery in Cincinnati on the Shields’ family burial plot, where it remains a perpetual memorial to the tragedy of the Lusitania. What is left of the Lusitania lies approximately 350 feet beneath the surface of the sea, about 11 miles south of the lighthouse at Kinsale, Ireland. Over the years, several expeditions have been organized to explore and salvage the wreck, but none have been successful. It is generally acknowledged that the attack on the Lusitania contributed to America’s decision to enter World War I.

She felt like a puppet on parade at social events growing up. Not a hair out of place, or an uncouth act. Her parents kept her extremely sheltered and structured with piano lessons and studying, leaving little room for her to step a toe out of line. It was discovered after her mother’s death that she had a older sister, half belonging to her father. Her mother had died and so she came to live with them.

Her favorite pass time apart from her sister was losing herself in a book. She found solace in the warn pages, her mind venturing off on grand adventures she longed to take but never would. Her parents had done a good job of snuffing out any big ideals the girl had. She felt trapped, unable to go against them. Her life was a comfortable but lonely, and mundane in existence. She had little friends outside of her family’s circle. Her first taste of freedom came when she began her Cotillion course during the spring her junior year. For the first time in her life, she felt like she had true girlfriends and was able to have fun without her parents breathing down her neck. That summer while riding bikes along the shore with her new found friends her bike collided with a blue eyed boy she later deemed her Prince Charming. Her bike was busted from taking the ditch and they both ended scuffed up but thankfully it was all superficial. . Mortified; she tended to his injuries and offered to buy him ice cream to soften the blow before making sure he got home okay. That night she didn’t know it; but she’d found her soul mate, thus beginning the long journey that would be their lives. They would tell story of how they met children at bedtime and the kids thought their love one to rival story books; how against all odds they have made it and we’re still going strong over twenty years later. His name was Christian and he was in town for the summer with his family, a couple years her senior. Within the first week she was in love with him and she spent every waking moment she could with him. The two continued a secret romance on through the rest of summer and she invited him to dance with her at her coming out ball. They were opposites; she a quite soft spoken dreamer and he was bad boy with rough edges. That didn’t scare her though. Her father of course didn’t approve of her dating a boy with a troubled past; and his dad had hated her from the start which meant she had to sneak around and creative.

The summer ended and he left; leaving an ache in her heart. Being away from him was terrible; but they called and wrote keeping up with each others lives; planning for their future together. She was proud of him for turning a new leaf and going to school, he had such potential and she was always there to cheer him on. As the summer turned to fall she discovered she was pregnant with his child. Scared and unsure of what to do, she hid it, hoping to figure out a plan of action in order to keep thier baby. Her father was a cruel man, her mother was dead. Her father only cared about his reputation in town, not about his daughters. She was planning on turning to her sister for help but before she could a cruel school pitted her to her father. He was furious, and dismissed all rumors. He pulled her from school for the second half and told everyone she had gotten injured skiing that winter. Her letters to CJ stopped abruptly though when her secret was discovered. Both fathers ensuring communication was several between the two teenagers and a plan was put into action.. Andi was kept on house arrest until she had the baby, a beautiful little boy whom she named Noah Landon after two of her favorite novels, the notebook and a walk to remember. He was forcibly taken from her and put up for adoption given she was a minor. It was devastating for her, and worse she had to return to life and school and pretend it never happened. The moment that she turned eighteen she took a bus to CJ. Abandoning everything but a few close personal possessions in the clothes on her back. She came to him hoping they could begin their lives together when she found out he was enlisting in the army. She suspected his father had something to do with it, and despite how handsome he was in uniform she wasn’t sure about it. Part of her was always terrified he wouldn’t come back. Still, she stuck by him, graduating with a degree in journalism and working near his base. She could never bring herself to tell him about their son though. It was too hard.

Finally, his contract was up and he’d be home for good. Right before leaving for his last mission he shocked her by proposing ; to which she told him it was about time and happy accepted and told him to hurry back so she could finally be Mrs. Hamilton. The next few weeks dreamed of their future children while thumbing through wedding magazines to get a head start on planning. A few weeks later she was shocked to discover she was pregnant. Ecstatic she wrote to him with the news; but no response came. She continued to write; sending updates and a sonograms thinking the mail was delayed; but weeks turned to months with no word or sign of his unit. It all felt like a bad dream. He was officially declared a missing person two months before she had their daughter who looked so much like him it hurt. She kept writing, and hoping against hope they’d find him alive. He couldn’t be gone. They had a child he needed to see; a life they’d planned for since they were lovesick teens. Eventually though, he was declared dead. Their was an honorable funeral with no body. She’d never made it down the aisle to be widowed. Her estranged father had disowned her, not that she cared, so she was on her own with a toddler. She clung to Chrissy like a lifeline; giving her all the love she could muster and vowing she’d know all about her father. She wasn’t ever convinced he was trulygone, believing she’d know in her heart if he really was. People called her crazy when she said it; or pitied her. His father tried to take her to court for custody of Chrissy, which was a horrible experience but she beat him. Like hell he’d get their baby. She had already lost one. The next few years felt like she was wading through water, she continued to search for leads and wrote to him as if he were still here. She wrote letters for chrissy too, should somethin ever happen to her. She moved back to Turtle bay; sharing a place with her older sister who helped with Chrissy. She’d call CJ's cell phone just to hear his voice on the voicemail, leaving him updates about Chrissy. Her first steps, forst lost tooth, sometimes a funny little story she'd told her sleepy eyed over breakfast. She was his little mini me, and each day andrea woke up grateful to have her. She refused to give up on CJ; on their love. Years later, she still wondered if it was that optimism and manifestation that kept him alive when he’s been a prisoner halfway across the world; thinking about her too. By some miracle, he escaped that hell and found his way back to her. She’d never forget getting a call from her sister to turn on the news. His own father hadn’t bothered calling her. She ran; lungs burning to catch the fastest plane with Chrissy and didn’t stop until she and their baby were both in his arms where they belonged. So began them getting reacquainted and picking up the pieces of their life together the best they could. He came back different, of course; how could he not? Chrissy Also struggled with adjusting to a father figure in the house, sharing her mother whom had been fully hers up until now. Andi loved them both dearly and did her best to help rebuild their relationship as a couple, a family, chrissy and him as father and daughter. Their son, little Jamie was a tell tale sign of their reconnection. He was born just shy four after Christen returned and the little family fell into place. It was important to andrea that they rebuilt thier bonds as a family of three before adding new members. The road there was bumpy though, and they never did quite get around to getting married. Andrea didn’t want to rush it until things felt right, until Christian adjusted and felt comfortable with who he was. Lffe also kept on going and with kids and work, things like planning a formal wedding fell on the back burner. Thier family came first, thier wants second. That dream wedding she always wanted became more of a dream than a priority.
