been thinking a lot about how lore olympus really just could not fathom the concept of found family, it absolutely HAD to have a traditional blood-related family for the ending which is just ... so rachel honestly lmao we really should have known.
there were a lot of instances in the series where it almost seemed like rachel went out of her way to paint biological families as inherently dysfunctional, or at least not all they're cracked up to be - aphrodite is disdained by ares' family, zeus and hera are constantly arguing / zeus is constantly unfaithful, rhea and ouranos are an abusive marriage that begets three wildly traumatized sons, etc and so forth. that's not to say all families were bad or flawed (whether that was a choice or rachel spent so little time on them it just didn't come up) but the end result is that there were a lot of broken biological families in the series.
i think rachel wanted to demonstrate that you do not have to stick with an abusive family if they hurt you - that blood is not the defining aspect of family and bonds, that you can make your own and build your own family. i think rachel thought she was writing that, with how hades hates his dad and how persephone distances herself from demeter (who did nothing wrong but anyways.) the problem is, she absolutely does not follow through with it. at the end of the day, rachel is going to prioritize blood bonds and biological children over found family, because to her, that's the only family that counts.
like, hades raised thanatos from childhood and abuses the fuck out of him, completely traumatizes the god of death to the point thanatos is genuinely afraid of hades. thanatos is mocked, derided, scorned, and scoffed at by hades, constantly. thanatos did not have a CHOICE in who raised him, his mother abandoned him into hades' care. and hades does not for a single moment let up on how resentful he is about it. when thanatos finally admits that he only had hades as a parental figure (or ANY kind of family, tbh), hades turns it into how that affects him, how it makes him feel. after, we get two jokes about how hades is thanatos' dad now, and the last scene we ever get of thanatos is that "sometimes hades talks to him." thanatos never shows up in hades' daydreams of a family, he never shows up as a person who is important to hades. for centuries, hades was in charge of raising thanatos, not once does he ever appear in any of hades' dreams or wants regarding family. not biological family, so fuck off.
more to the point, the narrative makes it explicit to us that hades can't have children - it's brought up three times specifically, to drive the point home that hades wants children, he's definitely tried to have children, and it just won't happen. melinoe was seen as a way around that, and i won't lie, compared to rachel's usual hamfisted approaches, it wasn't the worst idea to have. but by the end of the series, it's shown that oh, nope, hades can have children (only with persephone though) and also they look like him, because biological bonds are everything. you know who doesn't count? dionysus, who was kidnapped from his dad and raised as a pet project for persephone. the kid helps her conquer winter or whatever the fuck that plot point was, but because he's not their biological child, hades and persephone ditch him after the final battle and throw him his old mom back to get rid of him.
biological children aren't a bad thing and it's not a bad thing to want or have them, but it's so fucking telling that hades and persephone have multiple people in their lives who should be considered family, and are picked up and discarded summarily once their use is over. dionysus was their proxy kid, and we literally do not see hades interact with him except maybe twice. thanatos gets absolutely trounced and i'll never not be angry about that. i don't even know what's going on with persephone's half brother, but he shows up for a single panel in the finale and then disappears.
wouldn't it have been so powerful if hades, an abuse victim, decided to be the father thanatos deserved? wouldn't it have been more in line with the supposed message of the story if hades and persephone opened their homes to people who once felt like them, abandoned and unwanted? at the very least, couldn't they have shown love to the people in their lives who sacrificed so much and put up with so much from them? what exactly is the measure of a family in lore olympus? we can't control who births us, but we can control the hurt we ourselves give, and the love we share, and that would have been an infinitely better ending for the two most selfish characters to show their growth. another disappointing pin in an already massively disappointing ending.

I get that this is r/childfree and thus guaranteed to be filled with insanity, but this person actually voiced an opinion I’ve seen others who don’t inherently hate children voice, too.
Why is it that when fertile people get pregnant and have babies, it’s treated as a wonderful miracle and all, but when an infertile woman wants to get pregnant and have a baby of her own just like everyone else, she’s suddenly viewed as selfish and “overly obsessed” with the idea of having a birth child? Like I just don’t think it’s a hard concept to grasp that humans are biologically hardwired to want to pass our genes on to the next generation, and people who can’t automatically conceive naturally aren’t inherently selfish for wanting to create a baby instead of adopt. No one hassles a “normal” couple for not adopting when they’re all, “We’re trying for a baby!” so why are infertile folks treated differently on the subject?

you’d think me using the term “fear-mongering” would be enough to let you know i don’t take the topic of “low birth rates” seriously but this is the piss on the poor website after all… anyway all i’m saying is if ppl actually cared about the matter they’d put their money where their mouth is and started pouring it into research into fertility affecting disorders but it’s obvious all they actually care about is using it as an argument to further their political agendas
with all the fear-mongering surrounding low birth rates you’d think scientists would be scrambling to find a cure for endometriosis pcos and other such disorders. and yet

+ [ STRADDLE ] : while sparring, sender gains the upper hand and pins the receiver in place, straddling their waist in the process. ( i'm not. not saying yen would find a way to get the upper hand on geralt but that's definitely it )
She has not seen the witcher since a while after Rinde, so when he comes flowing like a quiet storm over this isolated corner of the world that harbors only dark, cold winds and secrets, Yennefer does not expect him. She's been in Blackbough for a little over a fortnight now, unassuming and swathed in the elegant, charming airs she puts on as she lodges at the inn, gains favour with those in power so that they might not suspect their ruin is by her hand, pretends to offer her help when the Pellar calls for her ; ravenously charming and powerful, feeding the darkness that has crept into the world around it by her own hand so that they might not extinguish it— she does not have a choice. There's too much to lose if she allows the light to return, here, unto these dark, forbidden swamps that crawl with ancient rites and mysteries; haunted by the unwanted; the abandoned; the forgotten. Here where she might just get what she has always longed for, fill the emptiness inside of her with that which she has been chasing for decades, now.
And, although she must have somehow already suspected it, that he is the Witcher the baron had contracted to put an end to whatever strange, dark creature was drowning their land in its own blood, she hadn't.
So when he comes, she's all breathless, sharp joy, at first, to see him, to have him once more near her (heavens, that deep, strong musk of him, leather and sweat, his heat— that stern, proud mouth she's come to crave now, on hers, wet with ale, furious and burning, searing her with its brutal kiss. ) Yet, too soon, comes the stilted, panicked fear; the anger, that he, of all people, should meddle with her plans, when she is so close, close enough that she can almost feel it; when she has almost grasped that which she is after... She cannot allow it. She must not. The stakes are too high; she's given up too much, has striven too long a time now to get what she desires to abandon it all in the name of something she cannot even make sense of... And thus she does not; she masks her ire away and buries the burning, feverish desire flaming in her blood; she smiles and strings the witcher along with whispered words and promises heatedly kissed with lips and tongue and teeth into every last inch of his body when the hour grows late and dark and she finds him crawling into her bed (always, a desperate, frantic thing between the two of them, pulsing and pulsing, gushing with need. Desire. Dangerous in its furious ferocity; the way she looks at him when he's not looking, as though entranced; the way her body aches for him, cold and empty when he pulls away. She can scarcely breathe for it: that want, that need that clouds her mind, upends her. )
She almost forgets what she is here for.
But the sorceress needs this creature prowling these strange, dark lands— so far away and buried like a dead thing amongst the swamps, far far away from the sunlit valleys of the Bald Mountain, even the sky cannot touch it — alive. She cannot have some hungered wolf prowling the Continent, slaying this beast she means to capture for herself in the name of his sworn path, in the name of his duty, his nature, his fierce, dark hunger and whatever coin he's been promised.
She doesn't.
Deep in the woods she finds herself, thrumming with the Force of her spells, one moonless night where nothing stirs but blood itself within her veins and the icy frost upon the hood of her velvet cloak— when he comes rushing in like a river, flooding the night around her, choking it with his cruel grasp. Shocked, the sorceress recoils — she had put an enchantment upon him before leaving their shared bed and had not expected to be ambushed— pulls away as though from fire with a breathless gasp. Her curls are shielded under the dark hood of her cloak; the sky is starless, a dead thing; but even before they tumble forcefully onto the ground together with him on top of her, and she gasping for air, furious, enraged, already, the enchantress thinks, he knows; heavens, the Witcher knows, and how could he not; a sharp gasp in his ear, her cold, dispassionate eyes flaring violet as they meet his through the thick darkness that envelopes them; the harsh, cold wind howls and picks up with great violence, scattering her scent to the night air. Lilac and gooseberries fill the space between the two of them. She exhales, small hands gloved in sheer black lace furiously pushing at the swell of his chest. Their eyes meet through the shadows, burning. She sees the shock of it, then, the abrupt jolt of recognition flitting about his normally stoic face, so full of something distant and pained as realisation quickly descends upon him like a wild animal sinking its teeth into his throat, that she cannot bear to look a moment longer. Seizing the opportunity of his shocked numbness, stiff and dazed above her, Yennefer utilizes the momentum so that she might push at the strong plate of the wolf's chest, fingers frantically fisting the material of his armour into a tight grip as she thrashes and cries out in frustration, trying to flip them over, wild streams of raven curls cascading around her shoulders as she gasps, forcefully rolling them so that she might straddle his waist, holding him down.
❝ Stop it, Geralt! ❞ violet eyes flash dangerously and meet golden hues.  Her eyes narrow and her chin rises, a sinister, malicious defiance swiftly colouring her expression. Frantic, breathless gasps are parting her lips, but she cannot think about what this strange, blistering sensation crowding her throat means; what that pained, agonizing feeling of something very akin to regret might make her do... No. She cannot let him destroy this; not now. Not after everything she's done to get back what she's owed; what she deserves. Pride would always be her weakness.  It holds her back — as though a taut rope wound tightly about her throat, pulling and pulling—, more often than it helps her.  There is nothing more pathetic than a sorceress in tears— or a weak, fragile one, regretting her choices. No; there shall be no room for regret. Yennefer does not succumb to this emotion. She presses on urgently, eyes flaring a violent shade of purple as she returns her gaze upon him, her quickened pulse pounding in her ears.   ❝ try to touch me again and I shall not hesitate to cut your candle short, witcher. This is no mere threat, but a promise. ❞ a fierce, dark promise as she heatedly presses herself against him, using all of her strength to keep him in place.
