the thing is there's like, a point of oversaturation for everything, and it's why so many things get dropped after a few minutes. and we act like millennials or gen z kids "have short attention spans" but... that's not quite it. it's more like - we did like it. you just ruined it.
capitalism sees product A having moderate success, and then everything has to come out with their "own version" of product A (which is often exactly the same). and they dump extreme amounts of money and environmental waste into each horrible simulacrum they trot out each season.
now it's not just tiktokkers making videos; it's that instagram and even fucking tumblr both think you want live feeds and video-first programming. and it helps them, because videos are easier to sneak native ads into. the books coming out all have to have 78 buzzwords in them for SEO, or otherwise they don't get published. they are making a live-action remake of moana. i haven't googled it, but there's probably another marvel or starwars something coming out, no matter when you're reading this post.
and we are like "hi, this clone of project A completely misses the point of the original. it is soulless and colorless and miserable." and the company nods and says "yes totally. here is a different clone, but special." and we look at clone 2 and we say "nope, this one is still flat and bad, y'all" and they're like "no, totally, we hear you," and then they make another clone but this time it's, like, a joyless prequel. and by the time they've successfully rolled out "clone 89", the market is incredibly oversaturated, and the consumer is blamed because the company isn't turning a profit.
and like - take even something digital like the tumblr "live streaming" function i just mentioned. that has to take up server space and some amount of carbon footprint; just so this brokenass blue hellsite can roll out a feature that literally none of its userbase actually wants. the thing that's the kicker here: even something that doesn't have a physical production plant still impacts the environment.
and it all just feels like it's rolling out of control because like, you watch companies pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into a remake of a remake of something nobody wants anymore and you're like, not able to afford eggs anymore. and you tell the company that really what you want is a good story about survival and they say "okay so you mean a YA white protagonist has some kind of 'spicy' love triangle" and you're like - hey man i think you're misunderstanding the point of storytelling but they've already printed 76 versions of "city of blood and magic" and "queen of diamond rule" and spent literally millions of dollars on the movie "Candy Crush Killer: Coming to Eat You".
it's like being stuck in a room with a clown that keeps telling the same joke over and over but it's worse every time. and that would be fine but he keeps fucking charging you 6.99. and you keep being like "no, i know it made me laugh the first time, but that's because it was different and new" and the clown is just aggressively sitting there saying "well! plenty of people like my jokes! the reason you're bored of this is because maybe there's something wrong with you!"
#this was much longer i had to cut it down for legibility#but i do want to say i am aware this post doesnt touch on human rights violations as a result of fast fashion#that is because it deserves its own post with a completely different tone#i am an environmental educator#so that's what i know the most about. it wouldn't be appropriate of me to mention off-hand the real and legitimate suffering#that people are going through#without doing my research and providing real ways to help#this is a vent post about a thing i'm watching happen; not a call to action. it would be INCREDIBLY demeaning#to all those affected by the fast fashion industry to pretend that a post like this could speak to their suffering#unfortunately one of the horrible things about latestage capitalism as an activist is that SO many things are linked to this#and i WANT to talk about all of them but it would be a book in its own right. in fact there ARE books about each level of this#and i encourage you to seek them out and read them!!! i am not an expert on that i am just a person on tumblr doing my favorite activity#(complaining)#and it's like - this is the individual versus the industry problem again right because im blaming myself#for being an expert on environmental disaster (which is fucking important) but not knowing EVERYTHING about fast fashion#i'm blaming myself for not covering the many layers of this incredibly complicated problem im pointing out#rather than being like. yeah so actually the fault here lies with the billion dollar industries actually.#my failure to be able to condense an incredibly immense problem that is BOOK-LENGTH into a single text post that i post for free#is not in ANY fucking way the same amount of harm as. you know. the ACTUAL COMPANIES doing this ACTUAL THING for ACTUAL MONEY.#anyway im gonna go donate money while i'm thinking about it. maybe you can too. we can both just agree - well i fuckin tried didn't i#which is more than their CEOs can say

open ai made a little post about how they chose their chatbot voices and two things stood out to me:
a) I am genuinely pleased and surprised that the voices come from specific real people that they hired and paid, rather than being built off of all of the data open ai has scraped. the voice for siri did one job for one company 20 years ago and now she is literally everywhere without ever being compensated by apple or even acknowledged as the voice. there's simply no way she was paid enough in that original job. whereas, open ai says "each actor receives compensation above top-of-market rates, and this will continue for as long as their voices are used in our products." this could mean literally anything (what market rate are we going above? does continue mean they get residuals or get paid for doing more sessions?) but, christ, at least the actors are doing it with full knowledge of what their voices are being used for and can decide for themselves if the compensation is enough
b) the post talks about working with "award-winning casting directors" to get the voices. first of all, yay for paying casting directors! we love to see it. but they also say the CDs received over 400 submissions in a week and they state that like a big number and it's just...not at all. and look, without knowing the intricacies of the casting process, it's hard to know what approach the CDs took - it's very possible they were selective from the jump and 400 is a lot from the pool they were tapping. 400 would be a lot if you were going to the agencies directly and asking for names, but there's just no way in hell open ai went after big stars for this. so it would've been a pool of unknowns. in which case, 400 is laughably small. even if you're not using the big casting sites like actorsaccess, I've worked on projects with CDs and their own internal systems where we've gotten over 100 submissions for a single role. I've posted roles on casting sites and received literally thousands of submissions in just a few days
look, I have a very limited perspective on this - I am not a casting director (imo, one of the most important and undervalued jobs in hollywood) and I, in fact, hate the process of casting with a passion. but 400 just seemed like such a tiny pool to pull from and, idk, it heartens me! it's heartening to think that there's very little interest from actors and agents to be doing this kind of stuff. and absolutely no shade to the actors who did--I want actors to get their bag however they want as long as it's, like, safe sane and consensual, you know? but there's something encouraging about thinking that open ai hired some big casting agency to get their foot into the voice acting door and people didn't come running
#ai#entertainment industry#lauren takes too long to say things#I am not anti-AI#mostly because I can tell when I've lost a war and need to figure out how to live with my new overlords lol#but also bc chat has genuinely been helpful for writing research!#(more in the sense that it helps me narrow down what I need to do real research on)#(bc the information it gives is often wrong)#but I am of COURSE concerned about how it's going to affect my industry#and if you've been following me for a while you probably saw my sag posting last summer during the strike#and given the contract sag got around AI#actors disinterest is THEE cudgel with which we will beat this stuff down#so the fact that the most popular AI company in the world had 400 people to choose from#is nice to my ears!!!!#(assuming of course that I'm correct about their process)#plus I'm just so RELIEVED that they actually hired people to do this#that's all that really matters - consent#if you're an actor and you give your voice to an AI company that will use it forever#as long as you KNOW that#and you have someone looking over a contract for you#more power to you!

im doing a drawtober of characters i think of through the day and will post in batches. day 3 solo because its already been derailed and todays blorbo is immunochemistry.
#admin draws#self#not fanart#drawtober#shoutout to two group chats and one server tormented by me reading a research paper and going jesus christ. whatthefuck#Anyways i have some Opinions about how booster doses and vaccines were handled by companies that had all the money in the world#to do this shit right and figure out the lowest effective dose that grants all the benefits but instead went HMMM NOPE ACTUALLY#LETS GO ALL IN AND GIVE BIG DOSES EVERY TIME. JUST TO MAKE SURE IT WORKS#and guess what. whguess what happened dear reader.#if you guessed immune non-response to covid in shots 3 onwards then congratulations! you win a cookie. we are fucked tho.#IgG4 being the centerpiece of this shitshow has one upside and that is that its a very very interesting antibody subtype#i look forward to learning more about it. i wonder about its genesis and role. like ACTUAL role in a healthy body rather than just#pathological processes. where it is prominent in some other vaccines (again only in too large dosages mind you) cancer and autoimmune stuff#anways i love vaccines. vaccines rule. but pharma industry doesnt and their lack of caution in not recognizing that you can have too much#of a good thing and then it backfires and leaves you worse off than EVER. doesnt rule. it makes it quite bad actually#anyways classes started again. irregularly scheduled reminder that im a bioscience student LMAO

i hate that the majority of us will never find true fulfillment in our jobs. it's so fucking sad (and i need to find lit on the subject and the very concept of work vs jobs). i'm still trying to accept that reality, because i really don't think i can ever stand to work for someone else period, but i can't do anything about it right now. i'm trying not to think of a career or anything like that or else i'll want to throw myself off this building, but there's a lot of comfort in really understanding that i'm working to keep myself afloat/fuel my hobbies/stay sharp. i don't think i ever really understood that until the traumatic experience i had from my previous job, because i've always had this tendency to pour my whole being into whatever organization/company i'm a part of (not very commie of me but i know better now). that usually meant striving for perfection and overworking to the point of severe burnout (which has happened three times now) for a company that would sooner watch me crash and burn than give me what i'm ACTUALLY due. i feel like this is all kind of obvious when i think about it sometimes, but now that i'm actually living it and actively learning from it, yeah it's definitely different.
im deleting this soon i just need to post this rn because notion makes me feel really alone sometimes
#i'm getting pretty nervy because it's been a while since i left that company and i'm getting sick of not earning money#but i'm learning to give myself more grace and ample time to rest and really think about what i want out of life#because i forget and when i do have an idea im always paralyzed and don't know how to proceed#and i'm still learning all of that when last year i jumped at this opportunity because it's an extremely huge company#but neither the industry nor the job itself aligned with my principles... not to mention the hours and the lack of overtime pay and god.#the abusive boss. in hindsight i'm proud that i lasted as long as i did and still did a fucking great job until i couldn't anymore#anyway tldr im wiser now and im trying to be less nervous and be more conscious about my next job pic. i'll research well#and teach myself new stuff since i want to distance myself from hr as much as possible

I'm an industrial engineer and tbh, I think my degree can be more if my peers just stop caring only about productivity and efficiency and removing idle time from the production process to make most of the labor cost. My friend's students in medical research just found a cure for humanity's stupidity and my students here just made a compact process flowchart to lessen cycle time that makes the company save 0.02 dollars per hour at the cost of the worker's "idle" time but who cares about the workers right? Like there's traffic management, urban planning, agriculture, workplace safety, ergonomics, spaceflight engineering, all these industrial engineering areas to help humanity, but no, we always gotta make sure businesses make the most from their poor employees. Not even, "make employees happy" no. Always, make them productive and efficient to save money. And honestly, I feel so detached from my degree already. I'm beginning to feel like a failure as an educator but I'm stuck in company improvement research. I want... I want out already. I want to feel more useful for humanity.
#IE areas are really good but some academe in conventions just really care about capitalism lol#i want to work in where there is net good for humanity#i had 2 years to think of my research interest and nothing just really stimulates me anymore#always about money for the company revenue savings blah blah#last time i checked I didn't take accounting#should have just taken law and worked at pao like my mom suggested#but I took engineering out of spite and even took masters of it so it's all on me#industrial engineering#rant

Fun fact! This (or more specifically, the idea that people need to see nature and ESPECIALLY plant life) is a theory with some measure of traction in the architecture and design industry. Many modern offices, and other places where many people spend a lot of time (such as hospitals), have been incorporating it into their remodels and new development; it's called "biophilia".
From what I know, research has indicated that properly implemented biophilia-- including things that only emulate the shape or colors of plants-- improves the health, stress levels, performance, and mood of the people working and moving through those spaces.
the human brain literally needs the color green (grass, leafs) to like self-calibrate and not go insane i sincerely believe this
#it's quite fascinating actually#of course the primary reason its taken off is bc it can be sold to companies as increasing efficiency and thus profit#but it is very cool that this research has been done and begun influencing design#its not ubiquitous of course but it is picking up#source: i know some interior designers and they never shut up about their work#anyway#if youre interested in this subject i recommend looking into biophilia and also 'well ap certification'#which is a quite recent (industry-wise) certification option for both designers and their buildings focusing on the health of the people#occupying the spaces#it has some interesting research and principles going into it!#harf blarf blib blab

Coca-Cola is now on the official BDS boycott list!
From the website:
November 2024
1) Why?
Because Coca-Cola is implicated in Israeli war crimes.
According to research by WhoProfits, the Central Beverage Company, known as Coca-Cola Israel, which is the exclusive franchisee of the Coca-Cola Company in Israel, “operates a regional distribution center and cooling houses in the [Israeli] Atarot Settlement Industrial Zone.” Furthermore, its subsidiary, Tabor Winery, “produces wines from grapes sourced from vineyards located on occupied land in settlements in the West Bank and Syrian Golan.”
The International Court of Justice affirmed in July 2024 that Israel’s entire occupation of Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is illegal, as are all Israeli settlements built on occupied land. As Israeli settlements – on occupied Palestinian and Syrian land – are considered war crimes under international law, Coke is complicit in a war crime.
Corporations that are implicated in the commission of international crimes connected to Israel’s unlawful occupation, racial segregation and apartheid regime - within or beyond the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967 - are all complicit and must be held accountable. Direct complicity includes military, logistical, intelligence, financial and infrastructure support. The corporations, as well as their boards of directors and executives, may face criminal liability for this complicity.
Local alternatives are popping up worldwide to substitute Coca-Cola, an unnecessary and replaceable beverage
Local alternatives to Coca-Cola have been gaining market share across the world, including in Palestine, China, Bangladesh, Sweden, Egypt, India, South Africa, Turkey, Lebanon and elsewhere.
2) Why NOW?
The BDS movement has always considered Coca-Cola boycottable but has not prioritized it as a target based on its careful and strategic target-selection criteria, so why endorse the Coke boycott now?
Human rights and health activists, among many others, have been campaigning against Coca-Cola and similarly complicit corporations for decades, including grassroots drives targeting the company for its complicity in Israel’s gross violations of Palestinian human rights.
During Israel’s ongoing, livestreamed genocide, Israeli soldiers have often been pictured with Coke cans, donated to them by various genocide-enabling groups. This has provoked even more anger against the company, particularly given that Israel is starving 2.3 million Palestinians in the occupied and besieged Gaza Strip, severely limiting their access to clean water and, as a result, inducing the mass spread of contagious diseases.
Given this context, Palestinian activists in Gaza and many BDS activists in the Arab world, in many Muslim-majority countries, and in some European countries as well, have called on the BDS movement to add Coke to its priority targets.
The BDS movement had previously targeted General Mills for its manufacturing of Pillsbury products in the illegal Atarot Settlement Industrial Zone - the same Zone where the Coke facility operates. Thanks to effective BDS campaigning, we won the demand for General Mills to end its business in Atarot. We know a campaign against Coke is winnable too.
Based on all the above, and given Coke’s large contribution (through business-as-usual and taxes) to Israel’s war chest during the genocide, the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC), the largest Palestinian coalition leading the global BDS movement, has endorsed the grassroots, organic #BoycottCoke campaigns to pressure the company to end its complicity in Israel’s illegal occupation, apartheid and genocide.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) | Chemxpert Database
In this case, the FDA plays pivotal roles in the process of approving drugs to enhance safety effectiveness and quality of the drugs used in the market. It starts with the preclinical phase and IND, then clinical trials in three phases. A new drug application (NDA) is filed with FDA following positive results from trial hearings, and the FDA examines all collected data before granting newer drugs approval for common use.
