Not bad but i wouldn't say i was wowed. Especially not after having the fried version elsewhere for lunch.

This is so weird to me because my immigrant¹ cuisine is actually recognised as separate from both the homeland and destination! Like it has a separate name & everything.

I don’t think anyone would make the argument that Indo food is not “authentically Indonesian.” It’s not; it’s a fusion, that’s the point.

Weird how giving it a name seems to change that perception.

(Unless, of course, I’ve been missing all the drama about Indo vs. Indonesian food lmao)

i saw the sirius headcanons by @lesbianmckinnonn which inspired me,,, so obviously here’s some james ones from me

second tallest of the fearsome foursome, but like ✨tastefully✨ tall. a modest six feet, just abouts (sirius is the tallest and he looms over people)

was a very lonely child (paranoid parents who had zero friends with children his age), which is part of the reason why he latched onto sirius so intensely shortly after meeting him

his family is indo-dutch but they’re quiet about it (as indo families usually are). when sirius came to live with them the jar of sambal became a staple on the dinner table, as they had to cut down on the spice in their meals but they didn’t want to let go of it entirely

thinks english food has no taste other than salt. would’ve KILLED for some nasi goreng at hogwarts. had his parents send him sambal after week after the start of his first year to put on his peanut butter sandwich

isn’t very hairy despite the hair on his head being really thick and remus once said his forearm is ‘smooth, like an eel’. james then ordered peter to hit remus over the head with a dirty sock

can’t grow a beard it becomes really patchy lol

bites his nails (lily grouses that he’s lucky he’s got long nailbeds)

is really lean and wiry, like harry, but could probably lift all three of his mates on his back and carry them to class without breaking a sweat

he allows remus to take advantage of this on the really bad days before and after a full moon and lets everyone think he’s just showing off

Trinidadian Barfi Recipe

Since tomorrow is Diwali, why not celebrate with one of the Caribbean’s most famous East Indian sweets? Recipe from the Naparima Girls’ High School Cookbook, while the above photo is from Foodie Nation:

BARFI

(Makes 32)

1 Ib. powdered full cream milk

1 cup or 8 oz. double cream

1½ cups granulated sugar

¾ cup water

1 tsp. rose water

2 pieces fresh ginger

chopped cherries

chopped almonds

sprinkles

METHOD

1. Mix powered milk and cream (using fingers) until very crumbly.

2. Sift mixture through a sieve.

3. Boil sugar, water, rose water and ginger for approx. 10 minutes; (just before sugar spins a thread) remove ginger.

4. Stir in milk mixture and combine well.

5. Press mixture firmly into greased dish using back of spoon.

6. Decorate with cherries, almonds or sprinkles. Cut when cool.

🍜 Crispy Chicken Bakmie ($7.50)

Noodle is super tasty and comes as a huge portion. The chicken itself is alright, quite crispy but ofc, not as nice as ayam penyet. Would want to try their normal version next time! The black pepper chicken is also quite nice. It has the fragrance of black pepper.

🥞 Campur Martabak Manis ($8.90)

It's so sinful! Somehow the texture isn't as bouncy or as buttery as the ones in indo.

Its an indonesian street food thats basically a small banana covered w pastry strip and then deep fried. Definitely much better than a plain croissant
