While writing The Gulf, i found myself listening to a lot of the mid-00’s indie music I listened to while in high school. To celebrate the release of the book, I’ve made a curated playlist that I imagine Oli herself woulda made for her journey to the commune.
Ack! What a flexible, tantalizing theme, and so close to Halloween. This sounds like an invitation to turn that scalp inside out— effectively transforming it into your beloved thinking cap —and come up with something horrifying. ^u^
[Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with the people who run this zine. I just think this looks fun. Some of their zines are available on Etsy. They're fantastic. You should check them out. ;) ]
Panel 1: A cat approaches a writer. "You look sad," says the cat. "Has genre fiction no courage?" asks the writer.
Panel 2: The writer says, "Where is the thirst for defying convention? For challenging formats that break narrative norms in pursuit of a message? must we still be constrained by storytelling rules established by the CIA in support of a less-literate public?"
Panel 3: The cat is cleaning herself. "Nobody likes your dream sequences interrupting action, huh?"
Panel 4: The writer throws paper and pencil. "THE DREAMS ARE ESSENTIAL I AM AN ARTIST"
ID: The cat is cleaning herself in a single panel beside a wall of text. "David Lynch called, he said you can't write the epic fantasy version of mulholland drive because his surrealist visual aesthetic doesn't translate into a traditional fiction narrative and you can't rely on so-called visual clues to orient readers to rapidly changing environments and timelines the way you can do it in movies, and it's a lot to ask the average reader to maintain focus on an emotional abstract long enough to discern that you are telling the story indirectly through motifs and don't explain why early chapters are necessary until it becomes self-evident five hundred pages later, especially when you sometimes indulge in archaisms"
A scribbly panel of my older self saying, "When I was 18-25 years old, this was my fave shirt. no reason i'm sharing that." My younger self looks sullen and is wearing a "tortured artist" t-shirt. I also drew a scrap of tortured artist cloth captioned "throwing it away was hard"
hi, i'm dex. i'm a young-adult OC artist (mainly, i'll post fanart on here too) and aspiring cartoonist. i'm currently working on an animated pilot called 'the hellhounds', featuring 4 of the main characters that i often draw.
it's about an indie metal band who also happen to be demons, if you care.
i'm also on newgrounds, where i may post my music, animations, and exclusive art for more mature (18+) audiences. i have a website that i haven't updated in a bit, but it's there! i hope we can become acquainted.
drop a follow or reblog this if you could, anything is much appreciated :-)
In preparation for SacAnime, a great convention that starts tomorrow, I finally trimmed up the pages and glued the cover onto my prototype handmade hardcover. I think it turned out awesome, and am looking forward to sharing it with everyone at the con! If you want one of these books for yourself, there are only 7 left up for grabs on my Kickstarter campaign. Join my amazing backers and help support my indie comic project to get Issue # 9 printed!
Back when I was producing Getting Hit On, I drew this little cartoon of the main characters just for fun, and it ended up getting turned into a legitimate poster and the official YouTube thumbnail for the film.
