Happy 29th Anniversary Pocahontas
As it is the 29th Anniversary of Pocahontas, one of my favorite Disney films, I took it upon myself to roleplay as the titular character, and I may roleplay as John Smith as well.

“You… you hold a Keyblade too? I have a friend who wields one.” Asked Belle from Beast’s Castle as she mentioned Sora. “Oh hello, Lucas and Bubbles.” Princess Jasmine of Agrabah greeted to Lucas with a wave. “Hiya Jasmine.” Bubbles said. “Flame says hi.” Cryst said to Jasmine as she and Clayr, Penelope and Zoey loosened up, and so did the princesses.
“Sorry we had to bring out our weapons like that.” Anna of Arendelle said. “The last time we did that, we did this to Vanellope, and we didn’t know she was a princess.” Elsa explained to Lucas. “Aye. It’s true.” Merida from Brave nodded.
“It’s a long story.” Vanellope whispered to Lucas. “So, is Asha in your group?” Penelope asked. “She is. Right over there.” Pocahontas said turning her head to the left with her hair blowing and Asha comes out.
"Hey girls," Lucas waved to the Fortuneteller sisters, Penelope and Zoey, while riding on Bubbles' shoulders.
The two Fortuneteller Sisters, Cryst and Clayr Voiant, along with Penelope the Parasol Beauty and Zoey the Winterhorn had heard Lucas coming from the Second District, and they saw Bubbles the Bouncywild carrying him.
"Hello Lucas." Cryst greeted. "Welcome back." Clayr Voiant smiled under her headdress veil. "It had been a while." Penelope stated. "What have you been up to?" Zoey asked.

BITCH WE DON'T HAVE AN AFRICAN DISNEY PRINCE AND DON'T SAY 'WE ALREADY HAVE AN AFRICAN PRINCE' ANIMALS DON'T COUNT.
The way stans are getting angry at the idea of a Indian Rapunzel makes me wonder how the reaction would be if Omari was part of the canon Prince line. Probably some shit like "baaah wee could've gotten a cute white Jack Frost but got a BORING nerd instead!!"
Like y'all want Disney to take more risks but can't accept a Indian princess or a black/prince of color. Ugh. Sorry for ranting the discourse just pisses me off
Nah it’s fine. It’s so annoying because at this point they are clearly being racist about an Indian rapunzel. You already know I hate that bland Ariel clone but even I can tell that it’s not a big deal because it’s a good casting choice and I think it would benefit the story if it was set in India. Plus it’s not even official. It’s just a fan cast and it’s enough for them to go into a racist rant. Even using Pocahontas (like the Disney version isn’t awful enough) and Tiana being turned white as a stupid argument as if those racists cared about them.
African prince? Disney doesn’t even have one (and we probably never going to get one as Disney is focused on sequels nowadays) and the cast from lion king clearly don’t count as they are animals. Disney stans make no sense whatsoever. Whose Omari? But people will always fall in love with a bland white character in favor of a handsome man of color. Sad but true.
I said it before but I will say again. Those people who say they want more risks in movies are the same ones that like the safest movies and hate on complex characters. Heck those people can’t even handle Elsa as a character..

What I think several of the Disney Princesses' lifestyles may be like in a Modern AU :
. Snow White - Basically is an overworked maid at a cruel rich woman's mansion, then quits and becomes a baker at a fine patisserie....and then leads a socialite/cultural patron lifestyle after she marries Florian ( who is an air force captain in a Modern AU )
. Cinderella : Similar case with Snow White btw except she went from being An overworked maid to a socialite/art patron after she and Kit ( who is a wealthy investigative lawyer in a Modern AU ) got married
. Aurora : Was a florist at a fancy botany shop before leading a socialite/ladies newsletter runner lifestyle after she and Prince Philip ( who is a naval captain in a Modern AU )
. Ariel : Becomes a marine biologist
. Belle : Becomes a librarian in a grand Museum
. Jasmine : Basically is an heiress/model/socialite in Saudi Arabia. Her dad basically owns a huge artifacts business, and her Indian mom is a leading diplomat from India in the Riyadh International Embassy. And then Aladdin is a young upstarting musical artist in Saudi Arabia when they first met in person. Cue both of them being amongst celebrity couples in Saudi Arabia, where Jasmine eventually has her own jewelry/cosmetics line.
. Moana : Becomes a marine biologist who is also an advocate for indigenous rights
. Pocahontas : Becomes a naturalist in wildlife reserve park and an advocate for indigenous rights
. Tiana : Similarly with in Princess and the Frog and also becoming a BLM advocate
. Malina : Goes from being a secretary in Kuzco's Enterprise to becoming acting co CEO ( similarly with Pepper Potts' arc here )
. Elsa : Becomes a diplomat for Norway in UN, and also a cultural patron
. Anna : Becomes an art gallery exhibitionist and curator in Norway
. Rapunzel : Becomes an art curator and teacher in an art museum
. La Esmeralda : Becomes a famous folk dancer and an advocate for anti Romani sentiments
. Megara : Becomes a diplomatic agent in Athens
. Maid Marian : A social journalist before opting for a socialite/ladies newsletter runner lifestyle after she and Robin Hood gets married while Robin Hood becomes a govt agent ( similar case with Jacqueline Bouvier btw )
. Kida : Becomes a naval captain and an advocate for indigenous rights
. Merida : Becomes a zoologist and a HeforShe advocate
. Mulan : Becomes a diplomatic agent and a HeforShe advocate

Do you think Pocahontas being the Indian chef's daugther ultimately makes her a princess?
This falls under the same as Tiger Lily from Peter Pan but, unlike her child counterpart, she was never actually reffered as a princess in the movie.
Not every chief from every tribe has/had an equal amount of authority, I believe, but Powhatan was supposedly very influential, to the point where you could say he came close to what we'd call a king. Not that that will make it so, of course. Terms like "king", "queen", and "princess" are simply not native to.. the natives. So, objectively, no, but Pocahontas is a character with authority, which is what the Disney Princess line-up is about. Mulan the royally blessed war hero and queens are in that line-up as well, who are also not princesses. In addition to that, commoners who marry royalty may not even be granted the classic title of royalty in a realistic setting. Wholly unlikely, even. Belle from Beauty and the Beast is probably at most "Lady Belle" or "queen consort Belle", not "Princess Belle" or "Queen Belle". Anyway, anyone who finds this interesting should look it up themselves, I'm not Wikipedia.

Disney's Pocahontas: Princess Pocahontas —Aesthetic
Pocahontas as a Royal
Pocahontas is the daughter of an Indian chief. This technically makes her a royal or a high authority figure to her people. Thus, Pocahontas is regarded as a leader of her tribe. She enjoys nature, animals, exploring, swimming, diving, canoeing, running and singing.

Higham, John. "Indian Princess and Roman Goddess: The First Female Symbols of America." Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, vol. 100, no. 1 (1990): 45-79.
Disclaimer: This article has repeated use of the "Indian" to refer to Native Americans and was written in 1990, so the language is dated.
A really good article on the progression of American symbols of unity and how said symbols exploit stereotypes, particularly that of the "Native Princess."
My Notes:
Iconography utilized for a depiction of America as an indigenous woman included; partial or full nudity, "exotic" animals such as an alligator, indigenous dress but European features and complexion.
The indigenous woman was used to symbolize America because Europeans and the American colonists alike deemed America barbaric, or "savage."
Colonial leaders quickly began to reject the symbol of the indigenous woman for the very fact that they did not want to be associated with indigenous peoples.
The "Native Princess" symbol was overtaken by the depiction of America as a Roman goddess, Liberty. Liberty was depicted with the new flag, eagles, and Roman iconography such as the pileus on a staff.
In the 19th century the "Native Princess" arose back into popularity as literature began to glamorize a "dying race" with individuals such as Pocahontas. Native Americans became a symbol of rootedness and continuity.

“Disney was so much better with the rep back then”
Girl. As much as we love Jasmine, she’s sexualized in the original movie (slave scene) and mind you she’s like a teenager, Pocahontas is disrespectful af, and even then there’s still so many racial stereotypes/caricatures so to me it’s more of a “does the creatives (NOT execs) care abt representation or not so are they being mindful abt depicting minorities” thing for the most part so don’t even dare to weaponize Tiana, Mulan, Moana, etc. And I don’t trust ppl who say “well make new original characters” bc they’ll then say it’s woke mess once they gave you that
I wanna make this point clear before people start saying “boohoo you’re bashing old movies just to praise newer ones”: media are COMPLEX. You can find a movie to be problematic, even if it’s a classic or a movie everybody loves, and still enjoy it. That’s the case with some of the older disney movies. I absolutely love peter pan 1953, it’s a great animation masterpiece imo, but I still have to recognize there are potentially dangerous racial stereotypes about Indians that need to be addressed. That’s just being real. I think pocahontas did a WAY better job at that, but I know it still has its issues (mostly derived from the fact it romanticizes the life of a real life person when the romance didn’t really happened lol).
“Disney was better with the rep back then” what they mean by that: I was a child when watching aladdin so I couldn’t care less about race discourse and just enjoyed the freaking movie like a child is supposed to, now I’m older and have a phone and the internet convinced me that anytime a movie character is other than a straight white man, it’s woke propaganda.
“They should make new characters” I swear to you the first comment I read when the first wish trailer came out was something along the lines of. “So now all the princesses must be black? What about white girls?” And like. Imagine saying that unironically

Pocahontas Captures a Villain 3
“Here you are, sheriff,” the warrior princess said and pushed her bound prisoner forward and into the clearing in front of the mounted lawman and his small band of deputies. “This is the man who masterminded the robbery of the Custer Bank. You are holding the wrong man in your jail house!” John Orville looked up angrily at Sheriff Benton. “Untie me and arrest that Indian witch, Benton or I’ll have your badge!” The sheriff looked over uncertainly at Pocahontas. “Now I sure hope you got proof of what you say, missy,” he drawled a concerned frown on his face, “because Mr Orville here owns the hotel and the saloon and he’s one of our leading citizens.” Pocahontas flung down a saddle bag onto the grassy ground. “Open it, sheriff!” she demanded. “You will find thousands of dollars inside, all with Custer Bank bands around them” The sheriff dismounted to look. “Goldarn it, she’s right!” he exclaimed as banknotes tumbled out of the upturned bag. “Custer Bank notes - just like you said!” Orville turned to glare at the woman who had captured him, fury in his eyes. “I’ll get you for this, squaw!” he spat. Pocahontas returned his gaze with a cold stare of her own. “Please get this rattlesnake out of my forest, sheriff.” she replied with contempt. “He is poisoning the air that I breathe!”

I see Lucas embracing my waist and resting his head on my arm, but because of the song, "When You Wish Upon a Star", I start to smile. "When you wish upon a star, makes no difference where you are..." I sung with the song from memory since I seen Pinocchio. I even have the Blu-Ray DVD. "Anything your heart desires..." Belle sung. "Will come to you." She and The Beast sung together as Lewis was shedding a tear with Wilbur Robinson from Meet the Robinsons.
"I knew this was gonna happen." Hades groaned. Quasimodo, the Hunchback of Notre Dame appears atop the studio as his gargoyle friends, Victor, Hugo and Laverne are there. and sings. "If your heart is in your dream," He sung. "No request is too extreme." Pocahontas sung next to Todd and Copper from The Fox and the Hound, Dumbo, Timothy Q. Mouse, the cast from The Great Mouse Detective, The Aristocats, and Gurgi from The Black Cauldron.
"When you wish up--" Ariel sung until Scuttle start vocalizing, until I close the seagull's mouth. "Upon a Star..." I sung finishing Ariel's line. "As dreamers do." Baloo and Mowgli both sung. I look around and then saw Shanti, but in her appearance from the first Jungle Book cartoon movie. and she smiled at me and Lucas. I smile goofily at Shanti like Mowgli fallen for him, but I shook my head.
"Fate is kind. She brings to those who love the sweet fulfillment of their secret longing." As the chorus sang the Magical Brooms from sweeps up the broken camera and Fix-It Felix uses his hammer to fully repair it. Then Hercules puts back the ladder as Fairy Godmother floats Goofy to the top as he sets the timer. "Like a bolt out of the blue," Sung Snow White, Mulan and Asha altogether. "Fate steps in and sees you through." Winnie the Pooh sung as he was pounced by Tigger.
"When you wish upon a star," Sung Jiminy Cricket in Mickey's hands. "Your dreams… come… true!" Everyone sung together as the camera flashes taking the group picture in front of the Roy E. Disney Animation Building, and Tinker Bell flies around and as usual, waves her wand. "Thank you making this all possible." I said shedding a tear seeing all of the Disney characters come together. "You're welcome, pal." Mickey said. "And thank you for coming." Minnie smiled. "You and your friend are welcome to see us anytime." Daisy Duck said to me. "House of Mouse included? House of Mouse included?" I asked acting like a fanboy. "Yeah... If it's still there." Donald chuckled and Pete made a sinister smile acting like he's the nightclub's landlord. Mickey then writes something on a piece of paper, giving it to me. "Take the photo to remember us. We got a copy for ourselves." Mickey said.
"To all who have imagined with us, laughed with us, and dreamed with us. Thank You."
@the-world-hopper
"Well they could... Some of their actors are still alive, but they sometimes make do when they... pass away. Some of their voices are archived." I said to Lucas as MacBadger, Ratty, and Mole from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad walk by with Ryder, Honeymaren, Sven, and Kristoff from the Frozen series walk by the 99 Dalmatian puppies who watch Night on Bald Mountain. "C'mon pups. You're gonna have nightmares." Kristoff warned to the puppies as Chernabog pops out of the TV, scaring the puppies.
They run away to the lobby, while running over Scrooge McDuck, who drops his sacks of money, and Robin Hood and Little John grab them. "Oo-De-Lally." Robin Hood and Little John said heading down to the lobby. Meanwhile, Flash makes it to the elevator. "Thank you... for holding... the elevator." He said to Donald who groans. "I am also going to the lobby." Baymax from Big Hero 6 said as he squeezes into the elevator.
Ursula the sea witch also goes to the lobby, but a lovestruck Splat from Strange World follows her. "Oh, no no no no no..." She said towards the creature as Prince Charming and Cinderella walk downstairs, but the prince dropped his shoe, making a reverse of Cinderella losing her glass slipper. Before he could get it, Max, Eric's dog grabs it. "Hey, Max! Eric, get your dog!" Prince Charming shouted going after Max. "Go, Max, go!" Cinderella said rooting for the dog.
Mickey makes it to the floor where they are, and sees Kaa the Snake hypnotizing Clarabelle Cow singing "Trust in Me". "Kaa... Kaa! You stop that now, Kaa!" Mickey warned. "Don't worry, Mickey. I got this." Rapunzel said to Mickey as she knocks out Kaa with her frying pan. Mickey then approaches the photograph of studio co-founder Walt Disney and takes his hat off to fondly remember his legacy. "Hey Mick. We're all going to miss Walt. We must thank him for all this." I said sympathizing with Mickey. "Did you know that Yen Sid, Mickey's magic teacher from The Sorceror's Apprentice is Disney spelled backwards?" I spoke to Lucas about Disney trivia.

is there a word for coming from a non-"american" (non-white) heritage and just... not being connected to it at all? outside of calling my relatives lolo, lola, tio, tia, etc., i don't think i've ever felt, like, culturally filipino in my life. and not to mention my indian side -- i was a surrogate kid, so i never knew my birth mother, and my own mom's very white (think WASP).
my lolo and lola came to the States in the '60s, and we've been here ever since. my dad calls my lolo his papang, but i've never called my dad that. i didn't even know filipino food outside bagoong until i was 10, when my lolo got us a book that talked about lumpia and longanisa. but i don't eat those foods regularly. i don't speak cebuano, even though everyone expectts tagalog when they hear "filipino" -- if they even know that the philippines exist -- i grew up with america. i idolized Pocahontas because she had skin that was close to mine, mulan because she was asian, and i was told that i was also.
there were never kids that looked like me growing up (don't get me wrong, my neighborhood was diverse, but no asian kids) and when i finally did meet another filipino kid, she was pale and called her dad papang and spoke in tagalog to him. my first language is english, even though i get asked if i can read hindu or tagalog off store labels by well-meaning mothers. sometimes i get praised for how well i speak english. (i do speak english well, but perhaps not in the way they're thinking -- i was consistently the top scorer in english tests in my classes. as i'm writing this, however, my grammar checker has oh-so-helpfully informed me that i have sixty-eight errors in this text. sad! (69))
my favorite food is the cheeseburger. when i get asked what my culture's like, i reply "american." because what else would i say? if my skin were white i'd be a true american. i saw raya in theatres and she was supposed to be the first filipino disney princess and i didn't feel any kind of connection. i don't think she would have even been a favorite if it came out while i was little. are you supposed to feel connection?
my african-american, my jewish, my latino friends talk about their culture and their traditions like they're nothing. one of my closest friends, who is korean, talks to their parents, rapid-fire, having to translate when they see me lost. one of my other friends can speak and understand spanish extremely well when he's with his mother, but got a lower score than i did on the tests.
i'm a diligent student because my father told me to be one, but everyone assumes it's because i'm asian. they assume that my father taught me to only get As because of some half-baked notion of being a "model minority".
it feels like a mask, sometimes. behind the filipino/indian part everyone sees, i'm just american. there is not tie between me and my ethnicity, nothing real keeping me tethered. is "assimilationist" the wrong thing to call me, considering there was nothing to assimilate from?
#archilles is posting#long post#just some thoughts#i made a post about this a while back but i'm revisiting it now

My review - The New World is quite a slow moving movie. The scenic views are beautiful. Colin Farrell’s character Captain John Smith has a rough time in this new world with near death experiences. His relationship with Pocahontas is confusing. In the movie, he was a bit of an ass for loving and leaving her. She was exiled from her tribe. She believed that he was dead and eventually moved on with her life with John Rolfe.
Disney’s Pocahontas story depicts John Smith as the man who falls in love with an Indian princess who saved his life. John Smith wrote in his book Generall Historie of Virginia that the young Native American woman put her own life in jeopardy twice in order to spare his. In reality, Pocahontas was too young (10-13 years old) for romance when she met John Smith, and she didn’t prevent his death.

Kid Kore Katie joins the fam
Stacie, Whitney, and Hilary have a new friend: Katie, who is a mid-1990s Kid Kore "Dancing Brook."
in thinking about my small community of dolls, I'd been pondering who isn't represented. A glaring omission is Native Americans. So I went looking for indigenous girls among vintage clone dolls, and in a weird clonish way, I hit pay dirt.
We need to backtrack a second, to Maureen Trudelle Schwarz' "Native American Barbie: The Marketing of Euro-American Desires." Schwarz looks only at Barbies -- and, oddly, doesn't address Mattel's Pocahontas dolls, even though Pocahontas was likely at the heart of the 1990s craze for Native American dolls -- but this narrowness of focus doesn't change the validity of her point. She argues that Native American fashion dolls have been consistently marketed as "other," "historic," and spiritually tied to the earth, in a manner that has no equivalent for white fashion dolls (or even Black ones).
Hooboy is she right about that for Kid Kore's many, many Native American dolls, as well as Totsy's smaller assortment. Kid Kore's are part of the Heartland series, complete with actually labeling dolls as "Indian Princess." Totsy's are packaged as Heroes of Yesteryear. Everyone is in a movie-western version of "traditional" garments. Nobody except the men have any attempt at a head mold that isn't also used on the white dolls. And yes, the boxes have friendly information about historic close-to-the-earth practices.
"Dancing Brook" is a Kid Kore Katie, the 7" younger sister of flagship doll Kelsey. She is also cute as all get-out, and I'm less concerned about head molds on a character that's a mid-sized little girl. I bookmarked a bunch on eBay and bought the one whose seller offered me the best deal.
She arrived in her "traditional" costume, in really great shape. I don't think she'd ever been undressed.
The first step is, of course, to get her out of that costume, since she's here to be a little girl among other little girls. In the long haul, all of the 6-9" little girls are going to belong to a children's performing arts group that requires them to have traditional dance dresses, but this requires getting out the sewing machine, which means getting some eBay listings done first. Point is, Katie will be defined by her "traditional costume" exactly as much as Stacie, Whitney, and Hilary.
Speaking of which, here's Katie showing that she's a little shorter than Whitney (Stacie) and about an inch taller than Creata Hilary. She's also reminding me that I'll need to sew casual outfits for the whole gang, as the clothes I think are Stacie clothes mostly fit Kelly, Skipper, and hypothetical other dolls that may not exist.
Let's see what's under the clothing.
Katie has a pretty simple body, but because she's Kid Kore, she has a secret.
It's not in how she does splits.
It's not in how she sits much more gracefully than Hilary.
No, it's in how Kid Kore handled articulation. Those legs are bendy!
It's unsettling, but allows for a range of motion.
Her face is adorable! I might want to do a little washing on her hair, but it's in great shape for a doll that's almost 30 years old. Unlike Hilary, she has kept her eyebrows.
She's looking forward to hanging out with her new friends... oh wait... her name!
Well, I'm not going to call her Dancing Brook. That's an obvious "white person romanticizing" name. I haven't decided what tribe she belongs to (which is going to be important in making her a more accurate festival dress). The major candidates are Northern Yokuts, Miwok, or Tohono O'odham [the first two for where I live now, the third for my 10 years in Arizona]. For naming, though, it doesn't really matter because west coast natives usually don't disclose their native names to white folk, for reasons that should be pretty obvious. So I'd only know her Anglo name, and... she's a Kid Kore Katie. As the first Katie in my little doll community, she gets the name.
