The sad demise of billionaire Micky Jagtiani Founder-Chairman of Landmark Group marks end of a unique chapter in the world of global retail. He was a college drop out forced to charge of a modest baby products store in Bahrain after his brother and father passed away in quick succession. Using his own insights, he went on to build one of the world's biggest retail empires operating in 24 countries. Forbes estimates his net worth at $5.2 billion. In all this he never lost the human touch, supported various charities in India and the Middle East, and was living proof against that common dictum about nice guys finishing last. I had the privilege of working on his biography years ago where I closely interacted with him, his family and various friends around the world. Here's link to excerpts of our book.

Global Milk Substitutes Market - Forecast 2022-2027
Global Milk Substitutes Market Overview
The Global Milk Substitutes Market size is estimated to reach $36,638 million by 2027. Furthermore, it is poised to grow at a CAGR of 11.2% over the forecast period of 2022-2027. Milk substitutes are foods and drinks that can be used in place of dairy. These plant-based foods and beverages are thought to be a healthier alternative to dairy. Soy milk, rice milk, and almond milk are some of the most popular milk alternatives across the world. Pertaining to the inclusion of a number of critical vitamin D and minerals, dairy replacements are considered healthful. They're also low in fat and cholesterol, and lactose isn't present. Milk Alternatives have gained a lot of traction in both the mature and growing markets. This is owing to an increase in the number of persons who are allergic to dairy. One of the major drivers of the milk substitute industry's growth is a dynamic movement toward a western-oriented diet that has been observed in a number of emerging nations. Milk, cheese, butter, coffee creamers, infant formula, powdered milk, and other animal-derived dairy products are frequently used in a Western-style diet. However, as people become more conscious of animal suffering and the dairy industry's environmental effect, the consumption and adoption of dairy replacement products have increased. Furthermore, advantages such as lower calorie, fat, and protein levels, as well as the inclusion of plenty of water in dairy alternative products, are driving up demand among consumers worldwide, therefore, stimulating the Global Milk Substitutes industry. Furthermore, rising health consciousness and disposable income have boosted the expansion of the global milk substitutes market. However, the market is hampered by changing raw material prices and high operating costs. On the contrary, the milk alternatives market is anticipated to rise owing to an increase in vegan demand for milk substitutes and the launch of new flavors and varieties of milk alternatives.

Inquiry Before Buying
Key Takeaways:
Geographically, Asia-Pacific segment will dominate the market pertaining to the presence of agricultural production base for plant-based sources in the region and the growing penetration of various products globally are all driving regional market revenue growth.
During the forecast period 2022-2027, the rising consumption of dairy alternatives in the food and beverage industry owing to associated health benefits will drive the product demand.
A detailed analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats will be provided in the Global Milk Substitutes Market Report.
Global Milk Substitutes Market Segment Analysis- By Source
The Global Milk Substitutes market based on the source can be further segmented into Soy, Almond, Rice, Coconut, Oats, and Others. For its widespread applicability in the foodservice and retail industries, the almond category held the biggest market share in 2021. Almonds are nutrient-dense food items that are high in magnesium, healthy fats, vitamin E, and dietary fibers. The demand for almond-based foods and beverages has increased dramatically in recent years, owing to the health advantages of preventing cell damage caused by high pressure, as well as aging, inflammation, tumors, and cancer. Furthermore, the favorable effects of almonds in lowering cholesterol and blood pressure will enhance segment growth. The industry statistics are being influenced positively by increased almond output to meet the expanding demand from the processed food and beverage sector. According to research by California Almonds, the almond-based dairy replacement had a total share of 36.5% of new launches in 2019. Low-calorie content and lower cholesterol levels, as well as higher daily, required vitamin D and vitamin E values will move the market forward.
However, the soy sector is anticipated to be the fastest-growing segment with a GAGR of 12.8%. During the projection period, this might be linked to rising demand in nations like India and China for products high in vitamins, zinc, and iron for optimal physical health. Moreover, the rising penetration of high nutrition and cholesterol-free dairy replacement products is predicted to raise the demand for soy in the nations such as the U.S. Furthermore, the high protein content, simple availability, low-fat content, high calcium level, and other nutritional value are all contributing to this increase.

Global Milk Substitutes Market Segment Analysis - By Distribution Channel
The Global Milk Substitutes market based on the form can be further segmented into Hypermarkets or Supermarkets, Convenience Stores, Specialty Stores, Online Retail and Others. In 2021, the hypermarket or supermarkets category have the most market share. Supermarkets and hypermarkets are big retail shops that typically provide a variety of retail product categories under one roof. In order to be accessible to clients, supermarkets are frequently placed near a residential neighborhood. However, leading to a shortage of property near residential areas, the majority of supermarkets and hypermarket companies are expanding outside of the city. Walmart, Tesco, Aldi, Kroger, Carrefour, Whole Foods Market, and other major retailers have a substantial presence in the distribution of dairy alternatives. Consumers may now buy vitamin and calcium-fortified dairy-free drinks in these stores. Furthermore, shifting consumer tastes for low-calorie and sugar-free products has prompted many businesses to keep a surplus of these items on hand. This assures a steady supply of goods to customers, allowing the company to expand.
However, during the forecast period, 2022-2027, the convenience stores segment of the market is anticipated to account for the fastest CAGR of 12.3%. Owing to their low-volume purchase from manufacturers or suppliers, convenience stores typically offer smaller discounts than hypermarkets, supermarkets, and internet businesses. Furthermore, considering convenience stores primarily focus on everyday commodities, their limited shelf space prevents them from stocking a diverse range of milk substitutes. Consumers choose other distribution channels owing to the low availability of milk substitute brands in convenience shops, which is projected to impede the growth of this category during the projection period. Fresh milk, on the other hand, has more traction at convenience stores since people prefer it for everyday usage.
Global Milk Substitutes Market Segment Analysis- By Geography
The Global Milk Substitutes market based on Geography can be further segmented into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America, and the Rest of the World. In 2021, Asia-Pacific generated the most revenue, accounting for more than 40% of total revenue, and is anticipated to continue to do so throughout the projection period. The Asia-Pacific health and wellness movement has brought the issue of food intolerances and allergies to the forefront of modern consumers' attention, driving the adoption of milk substitutes. Low-calorie, artificial-ingredient-free, and protein-rich goods are becoming increasingly popular among consumers. This is fuelling the market's expansion. Vegetable protein or mixed proteins are found in plant-based drinks, which meet the growing need for a healthy lifestyle. Consumers of plant-based protein in Asia-Pacific have adopted a dairy-free diet to improve their health and well-being, as plant-based diets can not only help curb obesity, stroke, and heart disease, prevent a variety of cancers, reduce cholesterol and arthritis pain, but also lower blood sugar, and increase energy and mental clarity.

Global Milk Substitutes Market Drivers
Growing cases of lactose intolerance coupled with an upsurge in environmental awareness are helping to drive market growth.
The global population of lactose-intolerant people is expanding, and the industry is booming as a result. Apart from intolerant persons, the belief that lactose-free products are better for human health is boosting the demand for milk substitutes. According to the National Institutes of Health, around 68% of the global population has hereditary lactose malabsorption. Furthermore, lactose intolerance affects 70% to 100% of East Asian adults, with the majority of cases occurring in adulthood. Furthermore, the manufacturing of some dairy products has significant environmental implications, resulting in adverse outcomes such as soil contamination, air pollution, water infiltration, and considerable biodiversity destruction. This is projected to promote the growth of the milk substitutes market in the near future.
The increasing prevalence of veganism among consumers is driving the market.
Many people believe that a vegan diet is healthful, and many choose to drink dairy replacements like soy milk, almond milk, rice milk, and other plant-based milk instead. The key consumers of dairy replacements who have fuelled the market expansion are vegan diet followers and adopters of a healthy diet. One of the key factors driving demand for milk substitutes throughout the world is a growing awareness among consumers of the benefits of a vegan diet. Many large economies, including the U.S. and the U.K., have witnessed significant growth in the vegan population.

Global Milk Substitutes Market Challenges
Price fluctuations of raw materials are to limit the market growth.
During the forecast period 2022-2027, the cost of a milk substitute is determined by the availability of raw ingredients, which is why prices fluctuate. Raw material scarcity is a concern for oat milk and numerous other dairy replacements, causing costs to rise. Price fluctuation is one of the most significant impediments to the expansion of milk substitute beverage sales. Natural sources can also be used to provide dairy replacements. Changes in climatic circumstances may result in a lack of raw resources, which can contribute to price volatility. As a result, the market for dairy replacements is stifled.

India Vending Machine Market during Forecast Period 2022-2028
A recent study conducted by the strategic consulting and market research firm, BlueWeave Consulting, revealed that India Vending Machine Market is predicted to grow at a CAGR of 17.2%, by the end of 2028. The India Vending Machine Market is booming because of the increasing need for on-the-go snacks and beverages, which is driving product sales through vending machines. The industry's expansion can also be attributable to these machines' speedy delivery of goods, which gives customers a very practical choice. A vending machine makes it easier to access food and beverages in a variety of locations, including businesses, upscale restaurants, crowded pubs, and public spaces. Furthermore, India Vending Machine Market is one of the most emerging markets that grow continuously owing to the fast integration of new technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and others.
Growing Technological Advancements
Vending machines powered by the Internet of Things (IoT) are being developed and released by manufacturers. To better monitor the equipment, this has made it possible to collect data in real-time and to provide an end-to-end IoT solution. It is now easier to gather customer experience and expectations to improve the buying experience for customers. In response to changes in consumer behavior, the sector now provides more contemporary, mobile solutions as a result of ongoing technology advancements. The development of the vending machine industry has been positively impacted by innovations like speech recognition, interactive display systems, and big data integration that have made it more convenient and user-friendly for consumers. This results in offering lucrative opportunities for the India Vending Machine Market during the forecast period (2022-2028).
Increasing Demand for Retail Vending Machines for Beverages
The market is expanding as a result of the rising demand for coffee and energy drinks across numerous industries. Beverage vending machines also offer diet soda, energy drinks, lemonade, flavored drinks, vitamin water, and water bottles in addition to coffee, tea, and chocolate. Hotels frequently have beverage vending machines available for customers who would prefer to have a drink or a small snack than a full dinner. To ensure ongoing revenue, vending machines are typically installed in hotel lobby areas. As a result, it is anticipated that the India Vending Machine Market would expand significantly over the forecast year (2022-2028).

Challenge: Increasing Worry about Cyberattacks
High fencing expenses and rising concerns about cyberattacks are two important factors that are predicted to restrain the growth of the India Vending Machines market during the projected timeframe. Soon, strict government regulations governing the sale of junk food in public places like schools and restrictions on the sale of products like cigarettes and tobacco are anticipated to restrain industry expansion. The market for India vending machines is also constrained by issues including low operating margins, theft, and vandalism. These factors collectively limit the expansion of the India Vending Machine Market.
Segmental Coverage
India Vending Machine Market – By End-User
Based on end-user, the India Vending Machine Market is segmented into Quick Service Restaurants (QSR), Shopping Malls, Retail Stores, Offices And Institutions, Public Transport, and Others. The retail shop segment has the biggest market share of these. Vending machines are currently largely used in the retail industry in India. The majority of vending machines in use in the United States are found in airports, schools, railway stations, offices, hospitals, petrol stations, shopping malls, supermarkets, and hypermarkets. Furthermore, factors such as rising population, increasing digitization, mobile-based cashless payment options, greater investment in the retail industry, and rising purchasing power drive market expansion. Furthermore, organized retailing growth in India's malls and multiplexes, BPOs, IT, and ITES sectors would be a major driver of vending machine demand during the forecast period.
Impact of COVID-19 on India Vending Machine Market
Because of lockdowns, the supply chain has suffered, which has hurt the consumer products industry due to the coronavirus outbreak. The impact on food and beverage companies will undoubtedly be complex, affecting both supply and demand. The need for a range of consumer goods has increased in contrast to this, with some customers switching between brands as a result of a change in consumer behavior. Manufacturers are looking for chances to improve and meet customer demand while also assessing how to handle any interruptions throughout the supply chain. Vending machine owners have observed the consequences including a drop in sales, especially in April 2020 compared to 2019.
Competitive Landscape
The leading market players in the India Vending Machine Market are American Vending Machines, Automated Merchandising Systems, Azkoyen Vending Systems, Bulk Vending Machines, Continental Vending Machines, Crane Merchandising Systems Inc, Evoca Group, Fuji Electric Co Ltd, Sanden Holdings Corporation, and other prominent players. The India Vending Machine Market is highly fragmented with the presence of several manufacturing companies in the country. The market leaders retain their supremacy by spending on research and development, incorporating cutting-edge technology into their goods, and releasing upgraded items for customers. Various tactics, including strategic alliances, agreements, mergers, and partnerships, are used.

Ten best snacking options in India
Craving for a quick snack? Gol-gappa time? Maybe not because we have just emerged from a pandemic and hygiene is foremost on everyone's minds.  I asked  my 10-year old cousin and he too said that he's allowed to snack at 'proper shops' only. Thankfully, there are enough brands in India to satisfy every mood and craving.   Here are my top ten choices.
10. Dunkin Donuts
My search for a classic donut and bun maska came to a pause when I tried at Dunkin Donuts at Dehradun. The brand launched its first store in India in April 2012 in New Delhi, offering a wide variety of donuts, beverages, and baked products.
9. Haldirams
A good weekend to me is having my favorite chole-bhature and rasmalai at Haldirams. A common household name over years, Haldirams was founded in 1937 as a retail sweets and namkeen shop in Rajasthan. Some of the items include Soan Papdi, Cookies, and Pani Puri, among others. Haldiram restaurants can be found in nearly every city.
8. KFC
A couple of years ago, my best friend and I went to try a zinger box at KFC. We were not sure how it was going to taste, but even today,  whenever we meet we make sure to have a taste of it. Their menu includes Hot & Crispy Chicken, Fiery Grilled Bucket, Chicken Zinger, Krushers, Rice Bowlz, and 5-in-1 Meal Box among others; they also offer a vegetarian menu.
7. Barista
Espresso Italiano is my second favorite brew after filter coffee.  Founded in 2000, it has over 275+ espresso bars all over India. The second-largest coffee chain in India after Cafe Coffee Day,  it delivers an Italian coffee experience in a relaxed environment; try the non-milk versions as well.
6. Burger King
Just before I turned 20, I tried Burger King’s veg wraps, which were an absolute revelation. Launched in 2014 in India, the Brand offers a mouth-watering range of burgers and meals. My most favorite items of the brand are veg whopper, wrap, king paneer melt burger, among others.
5. Pizza Hut
My sister loves pizza and tries new restaurants every month to explore what's new; however, her constant dine-in place for years has been Pizza Hut. Famous for its Italian-American cuisine, it serves pizza, pasta, side dishes, and desserts. Our favorites are the country feast, paneer soya supreme and tandoori paneer. Recently, we also tried  the new Momo Mia Pizza- keep the innovation going guys!
4. JumboKing
I was pleasantly surprised when I visited Delhi Metro and found a JumboKing store. All my friends from Mumbai had been talking about it and when I finally tried its Nachos Burger, I found it worth the hype. Launched in 2001 in Mumbai, it is regarded as one of the biggest vegetarian QSR players in India and offers a variety of Indian burgers, wraps, shakes, flavors such as Nachos, Macaroni, and Cheeseburger, Spicy Mexican.
Tumblr media
3. Subway
I’ve never been a fan of ‘healthy’ sandwiches (who wants health if mom's not around!). But Subway’s veggie delight is something I think everyone should try. A ‘go-to’ place for people who crave a sandwich, it sells submarine sandwiches, salads, and beverages. The Signature wrap is also an amazing choice.
2. Dominos-
I remember knowing Dominos from its famous 30-minute express delivery, long before Zomato and Swiggy were in the game. My favorite pizzas from the brand are  Farmhouse with cheese burst, peppy paneer, and double cheese Margherita among others. Also, they keep providing exciting offers throughout the year. So much so, that it has become synonymous with home delivery.
Tumblr media
1. McDonald's
McDonalds has been around forever; and Indians call it MacD for some reason. I have lost count of the number of times a friend has said, "lets meet at MacD." Famous for its burgers and fries, their menu includes wraps, desserts, chicken products, milkshakes, and breakfast items. McAloo Tikki Burger, Dosa Masala Burger and the Veg Maharaja Mac, are some of my  favorite items on their menu.
That was my list. How many of you think we need a gol gappa brand! Or that I missed some good options in the list. Drop a line in the comments section.

The Bank of England apologized on Friday for its historic links to slavery and promised to ensure no images of former bank officials who owned slaves or profited from slavery are on display. The U.K. central bank had 27 former members, including 11 former bank governors and 16 directors, who owned slaves or profited directly from the slave trade, according to a database maintained by University College London. The bank’s announcement comes one day after two venerable brand-name British companies, insurance exchange Lloyd’s of London and the brewer Greene King, announced that they would make reparation payments for the historic role the firms played in slavery. The Royal Bank of Scotland, one of the country’s biggest retail banks, which had several slaveholding directors, told the Daily Telegraph that is considering doing the same. The announcements are a significant victory for the U.K.’s Black Lives Matter protests which, while sparked by the killing of George Floyd in the U.S., have sought to highlight racial inequalities and injustices closer to home. The current movement has succeeded where earlier attempts to wrest compensation from companies with slave-tainted pasts, including several lawsuits against Lloyd’s of London filed by the descendants of slaves in the U.S. in the early and mid-2000s, had failed. Lloyd’s was founded in a London coffeehouse in 1688 and later underwrote insurance policies on voyages transporting slaves, as well as the commodities, such as sugar, coffee, and cotton, that their labor produced. The company said in a statement that it “cannot always be proud of our past.” It apologized “for the role played by the Lloyd’s market in the 18th-and 19th-century slave trade—an appalling and shameful period of English history, as well as our own.” The exchange said it would invest in ways to recruit, retain, and develop more black and minority ethnic market participants and provide financial support to charities and other organizations promoting diversity and inclusion, among other steps. Greene King, which was launched in 1799, said one of its founders profited from slavery and argued against abolition in the 19th century. The company’s chief executive officer Nick Mackenzie said this past was “inexcusable” and that the company would make “a substantial investment” to benefit the black, Asian, and Middle Eastern community in Britain. Just as statues of Confederate generals have become a focal point for Black Lives Matter protesters in the U.S., in Britain, protests have targeted statues of those who profited from the transatlantic slave trade. In Bristol earlier this month, a statue of Edward Colston, a major benefactor to the city in the early 18th century, was tossed into the harbor. Colston had been a director of the Royal African Company, which in the 17th century held a monopoly on the British slave trade from the West African coast. The next week demonstrators cheered as a statue of Robert Milligan, an 18th-century merchant who had built one of London’s most important docks, was removed from its plinth. Milligan’s ships plied the Triangle Trade between England, Africa, and Britain’s American possessions, and he led efforts to build London’s West India Docks, where goods produced with slave labor, such as sugar, rum, and coffee, were landed. The statue-toppling campaign has brought renewed attention to the country’s role in slavery and the extent to which the nation’s wealth is built on the back of that historic crime. It has added momentum to calls for the modern-day beneficiaries of that wealth, especially corporations, to pay reparations.
A neglected subject
Slavery is a neglected subject in the U.K., where popular history has tended to focus more on the nation’s leadership in helping to abolish slavery with the passage of the 1807 Slave Trade Act than on its culpability in the 150 years that came before. (In addition, British textile mills remained heavily dependent on slave-produced American cotton right up until the end of the Civil War. Despite official British neutrality in that conflict, many British citizens and businesses provided financial and material support to the Confederacy.) This myopia applies to Britain’s public spaces too. “The physical environment in Britain has worked to elide slavery and privilege abolition,” the historian Nick Draper wrote in an essay published earlier this month in the journal History & Policy. “Memorials to those who participated in slave-trading or slave-ownership celebrate their activities in other spheres but remain silent on their connections with slavery, while numerous statues commemorate the abolitionists and their gift of freedom to captured Africans.” Draper is former director of the UCL (University College London) Legacies of British Slave Ownership project, which has sought to document all the ways in which wealth from the slave trade and slave labor is infused throughout the British economy and society. Activists have used the database the project maintains to identify companies such as Lloyd’s of London, the Greene King, and Royal Bank of Scotland, that have been pressured to pay reparations. It is also the UCL database that was used to identify the Bank of England members associated with slavery.
