My thoughts on the best strategies to preserve human knowledge and creation in perpetuity
1) don't put all your eggs in one basket
archives need to be paper and digital, public and private sector, centralised and decentralised, fully legal / by the book and rogue, in vaults and cabinets and servers and torrents
create as many redundancies as you can: make copies, and copies of the copies, and copies of the copies of the copies, ad nauseam; anyone anywhere who can make copies, should
spread the physical hubs (paper stacks or servers) geographically, in as many places as possible; you never know what kind of natural disaster or man-made horror will take out a whole building, city, region, or continent tomorrow
2) entropy is a bitch, think longterm
pick methods that are more likely to last
schedule regular copying: you gotta transfer the stuff to a new medium before the old one falls apart, so have some idea when it's expected to fall apart
3) keep converting to new formats
no format becomes obsolete instantly, there's always a transition period; use transition periods to furiously convert everything
4) indexing and searching is as important as the content itself
self-explanatory
5) eyes on the prize: the end goal is public access
if a random nobody, with no status and no money, can't access it easily, freely, and anonymously, the job is only half-done; you've built the back-end and neglected the front-end; get someone to complete it ASAP, because now it's just sitting pretty and isn't doing anything; or isn't doing enough, in any case
bonus: use. fucking. torrents.
It is truly bonkers that the bittorrent protocol is not being used for archiving. It's an ideal method for digital archiving and it should be standard procedure. If a university has stuff on a hard disk, it can put it on its server, and if it can put it on a server, it can torrent it and seed it 24/7. If the same archive is useful for another university on the other side of the planet, that one can download it and then stay in the swarm, also seeding it. If a library or city council anywhere on earth finds the archive of interest, it can do the same. The more the merrier, every download is a potential redundancy and every seeder is an actual redundancy.
If you got space to store it, you got space to share it. And of course, any private individual can at any time join the swarm. So we get excellent preservation (with multiple redundancies, spread far and wide geographically) AND public access, global and free, which is what preservation is FOR in the first place! It ain't for the heck of it, it ain't only for the eyes of the elite, it's for everyone, that's the purpose, that's the end goal. If that's not your end goal, you're doing it wrong.

O.R.C.A.’s Directory
(Finally coming back to this concept after several months ^^;)
O.R.C.A. in #re_rise doesn’t just run Alterna in the background and give you orders– it’s a system you interact with regularly as the player; a database that facilitates your adventure and keeps track of your accomplishments. It is accessed through terminals placed at key spots on each site, which you have to find, activate, and physically walk to if you want to use them.
Most of the contents of the Menu (except the Sunken Scrolls) are now consolidated into O.R.C.A., along with a few bonus features~
Alterna Archive: Basically the Alterna Logs– all the information about Alterna’s history, from creation to collapse (referencing my rewritten version of this backstory, of course). As you clear lab spaces with different weapons, earn Golden Eggs, activate terminals, collect Nostalgic Devices, etc., the files will be decrypted line by line. Basically, anything that contributes to your percent completion of the game will count towards this…so just enjoy Alterna the way you like, and you’ll eventually reveal the entire archive without too much extra effort. ^^ This story is O.R.C.A.’s gift to you; your reward for reawakening its home.
Lab Notebook: Notes written by the ‘mysterious researcher’ currently working in Alterna, earned in order from newest to oldest, so we can gradually learn what the Fuzzy Ooze is and why he made it, as well as his origin story and true identity (in his own words~). These replace ‘Log.exe’ from the actual game. Lab notes are found by reaching computers hidden within the lab spaces, kinda like the Power Egg packs. They are purposely placed in the more challenging spaces, and you must clear the space in order to take the note with you– if you wanna learn the main antagonist’s secrets, you gotta put in the work. ^^
Wellness File: Records of Neo Agent 3’s responses to the environment, once you obtain the biometric monitor in Cryogenic Hopetown (more on that later). This is essentially an account of how the player character is feeling at each point in the story– a new entry will be created after each encounter with a major character (Deep Cut, the King Salmonids, the Squid Sisters, etc.) or a particularly interesting Alterna landmark. ;)
Nostalgia Index: List of all the Nostalgic Devices you’ve collected, which Alterna citizens they belonged to, and what they used them for. The citizens’ names are redacted, but you do get to learn a bit about the different kinds of people who lived in Alterna, and connect with them through the items they left behind.
Skill Tree: Basically the same as the in-game version, minus the Hero Shot buffs– in #re_rise you don’t get the Hero Shot until you gain the Hero Gear in the last stretch of the game. Instead you borrow from weapons’ lockers placed around Alterna…meaning you can carry the weapon of your choice as you explore each site, offering you a wider variety of strategies to use on those balloon challenges, for instance. ^^ But I digress…
Camera Roll: One of the Nostalgic Devices you can find is a digital camera, and once you’ve obtained it, you can take pictures with it and upload them to the terminal (as well as your regular photo gallery, when you’re back on the surface). The Alterna Camera comes with its own special filters, and characters you aim it at will pose for you. ^^ This feature is basically just for funzies, but if you can snap a picture of that large figure lurking in the shadows, you’ll earn a special clothing item.
Messages: Occasionally you will receive mysterious messages, warning you with increasing severity to stay out of their laboratory (and bring back their golden eggs…sure sounds familiar). Are these warnings for their sake or for yours…?
Map: Even the site maps are only accessible through the terminals, they’re not available whenever. Maybe that would be a controversial choice…but I think it’d be okay in this instance, since (a) the Alterna islands are pretty small, and (b) I’ve invented a fun system that might help– the Sticker Beakons! ^^
Around Alterna, you can find Sticker Sheets with 3 Sticker Beakons each, to place and replace wherever you want on any island. They shine like actual beacons so you can use them to navigate while you wander around on foot, and once you reach a terminal you can jump to them like normal Squid Beakons. They come in different shapes and designs like the stickers from Hotlantis, and double as actual stickers you can place on your locker, once you’ve found them in Alterna. ^^
I feel like forcing the player to walk around is more forgivable when you give them something cute and customizable like this to play with. :D If you want to use all 18 Sticker Beakons on one island at a time because you’re super directionally-challenged, you can. If you want to use them to simply mark your favorite Alterna landmarks so you can jump to them easily, you can do that too.
Maybe as a compromise, I might add a ‘Return to Nearest Terminal’ option in the Menu…but I think encouraging the player to get out there and actively explore can’t hurt. Part of my philosophy with this re-concept is to make Alterna an interesting place that the player would WANT to explore, and all these added collectibles are part of that.

"i'll be back later, okay?" notified sejeong as she pulled the doorknob. "if you need anything just call me." she offered.
"don't worry, you will only be gone for a few hours." calmed serim from the living room couch. "ning is here." she pointed her index finger at the girl who paced around the place looking for pillows to pile up and then lay on top of.
"i'm here." affirmed the younger girl, pointing her thumbs at herself and smiling graciously.
"okay." kim gave them a tender look back. "see you later." she bid goodbye and then left the apartment as she would be going to dinner with her friends.
"there are no more pillows, you've grabbed them all already." joked the owner of the department who, turning her attention back to the other, noticed that she was still on her mission to assemble a bed on the floor.
"it's not finished yet." laughed ningning, focused on continuing her search.
"why don't you just lie on the couch with me?" she proposed, her voice soft, welcoming.
"because you're so restless." she confessed in amusement.
"that was once." she reminisced about one of the many movie nights they'd had where ningning had decided to snuggle up to serim, but the older girl, not being interested in the movie, had been unable to stay in place. "you know i'm not always like that."
"semmie, i'm sorry i have to be the one to tell you." she closed her eyes and put her hand on her chest dramatically. "but you're, indeed, always like that." she sentenced, innocently teasing the older girl.
serim let out a laugh, she couldn't contradict her, yes it was hard for her to keep still and she knew ningning was perfectly aware of that, as no one had as much patience for her as she did. but it was a movie date and it didn't make any sense for them to sit in different places during the night.
other than that, serim would do anything to have a pretty woman in her arms.
jang stood up, walked over to the makeshift bed the girl was setting up to grab one of the cushions and threw it back on the couch, repeating the action with the rest.
"hey!" ningning knew the reasons why the whimsical serim was doing it so she couldn't help but find it funny. "leave my bed." she ran over to where the objects were being shot to try to return them to the place she had put them before, but it only became an endless loop.
"i'm your date!" she remembered. "you have to cuddle with me!" she said with obviousness.
"it's not my fault you have hyperactivity!" the youngest attacked.
ningning realized that trying to reassemble the mattress was pointless if serim didn't stop actively ruining it, so she opted to stop the woman, taking steps towards her, even walking over the pillows, and resting her open palms on the older one's abdomen to exert force, thus pushing her away from her creation. the taller one resisted, using her legs to hold herself in place, she brought her hands to those of the blackhaired one to grab them and pull them away from her body, managing to lift them into the air with some effort, but now facing the struggle of yizhuo who would not give up so easily. they both pushed against each other, slightly trying to see who would lose balance first, while laughing at the ridiculousness of the situation.
serim was now determined not only to get the girl to lie down next to her and watch television, but, because of her competitive nature, also to win this battle of strength and equilibration. since there were no rules, nor was it an officially determined game, she had the idea of bringing her hold on ningning down and to the sides of their bodies. doing so, all the force the chinese was exerting was no longer supported, so her body lost its grip, and she suddenly went forward, crashing into serim's. jang, still holding her, hugged her around the waist, thus keeping both pairs of hands against the younger's back.
the reality is that serim was only doing her best to rest advantages from ning and prevent her from knocking her down, but when she lowered her gaze and met her face directly because of the closeness she had caused, she figured that the next thing to do was to kiss her.
she suddenly leaned towards the girl and joined her lips with hers, ningning still deprived of mobility in her arms could only reciprocate, although she had no objection, she had been waiting weeks for some moment that felt right to do exactly that, and she never thought it would be serim who initiated it. it was a deep kiss, intense, but without any rush, the kind that all first kisses should be, where you get to know the other person and give them a place in you.
serim let go of the shorter and this one almost instinctively slid her hands around her waist, while jang held ningning's face between her fingers subtly keeping it in place so that their mouths could not pull away. silence reigned in the apartment, only the sound of heavy breathing could be heard as they caressed each other with affection and patience, as ningning had always had for serim.
eventually the contact was broken, but they both kept such a short distance that they could have connected again if only they opened their lips, taking in the opposing presence and adjusting to it, enjoying it, their breaths colliding on each other's skin.
everything was fine, so why did it feel wrong?
they were both enveloped in that feeling that nothing made sense. the awareness of knowing that they had done nothing wrong, that they should be satisfied with the display of affection, and the subconscious leave that the natural order of things was being altered.
"was that because you genuinely wanted to do it or because you are desperate to somehow fill jimin's absence?" it was yizhuo who filled that existential void with words, almost without processing what she was saying, she could only find it in herself to be honest.
"ning," serim gave a sigh to then arrange the girl's hair, looking at her tenderly, but also somewhat wearily. "i wanted to do it." she confirmed, and she wasn't lying,
but wanting to do it didn't discount her desperation to get yu jimin out of her head.
