Design Area : Art Deco. Area Information : Art Deco (1915-1935) received its moniker from the Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925, which was largely dedicated to the jewelry arts. Emphasis was placed on the association of art and modern industry. Inspiration for this style was as far reaching as Oriental, African and South American Art and as varied as Cubism and Fauvism, both popular movements at the time. The term "Cubism" was often used to describe jewelry of this era because of the angles, geometric lines and figurative representations used in its execution. A desire to eliminate the flowing lines of Art Nouveau and distill designs to their rudimentary geometric essence, thus eliminating seemingly unnecessary ornament, resulted in the cleaner and more rigid lines employed in Art Deco jewelry. A look forward toward modernism and the machine age also featured prominently at this juncture in jewelry history. During the Art Deco era, advancements in cutting techniques, including the advent of the modern round brilliant cut style, allowed for diamonds to become more dazzling and scintillating than ever before. Meanwhile, prosperity was permitting more people to afford diamond jewelry and engagement rings. New casting techniques further increased accessibility, as jewelers discovered more efficient ways to produce the most intricately detailed of settings.. Materials : Coral, Diamond, Onyx. Material Information : Coral Coral is an organic gemstone which is cut from a mass of skeletons, secreted by polyps as a calcareous habitat. These corals, usually, grow at a depth of no more than about 50 feet (15 to 20 meters) in tropical to sub-tropical waters in a belt between 30 degrees above and below the equator. It comes in a wide variety of colors which are caused by both the water temperature, the food and the level of pollution. The highest valued corals are those with a dark red (ox blood) or pinkish (peau d'ange) color. Corals are usually cut as beads or en cabochon. The larger the stones and the more even the color distribution, the higher the price will be. Cameos and sculptures were also carved from this gem. There is an emphases on were as most coral reefs are now, rightfully, protected globally due to their invaluable ecological role. Much like the trade in ivory, the trade in old coral is still acceptable and many coral artifacts are of historic value. Onyx Onyx is the name for the black and white banded variety of chalcedony. It has been used since antiquity when it was highly prized as a cameo stone. The layered color structure allows the engraver to cut the subject in one color while creating a background of another. The term onyx is often encountered describing pure black material although this is technically incorrect. Single Cut Diamond A single cut diamond has a large table and an octagonal girdle. The culet, or bottom edge of the diamond, may be pointed or it may be flat. A single cut diamond usually has 18 facets. The single cut is an extremely old diamond cut dating to the 1300s. Gold Because of the softness of pure (24k) gold, it is usually alloyed with base metals for use in jewelry, altering its hardness and ductility, melting point, color and other properties. Alloys with lower carat rating, typically 22k, 18k, 14k or 9k, contain higher percentages of copper or other base metals or silver or palladium in the alloy. Copper is the most commonly used base metal, yielding a redder color.. Dimensions : 9 x 32 mm. Gender : female. Weight (in grams) : 4,9. Condition : Good condition - used with some signs of wear. https://www.binenbaum.com/product/coral-diamond-onyx-gold-earrings-10898-6807/
