Whumptober 2024 - Day 5

Archer belongs to my beloved friend @that-one-thespian!! Surprise!!

TWs: Heat exhaustion, burns, needle mention (an IV)

Sunburn | Healing Salve | Heatstroke | “If my pain will stretch that far.”

Heat radiated off of Archer's skin as Mariano scooped more burn salve onto his fingertips. Archer lay on a clinic sickbed, face red and hair plastered to his skin with sweat. The cooling IV in his flesh arm would help, but it could only go so quickly.

The cloth on his forehead had just been changed, as had the cold compresses on his neck and hips. Mariano leaned close, starting to dab the thick cream onto Archer's poor shoulder. The skin nearest his metal arm's connective port looked sensitive, and Mariano knew first hand how quickly this cream worked its magic. Archer groaned, shivering as Mariano tended to him.

"I know," Mariano said, voice low and soft. "I know, you have to be miserable." He didn't rub the salve in, didn't want to risk irritating or tearing the skin, but it was already being soaked up anyway. "This will all help."

"M'sorry." Archer mumbled, sighing when Mariano set the salve container aside and started to fan him. "Didn't think I was feeling that bad. Sun's never bothered me on camping trips before."

"The heat index usually isn't so high, or the air so humid." Mariano said. "And you were excited about that hike."

"The waterfall was supposed to be amazing this time of year." Archer complained, a rare frown flickering over his face. "I'd even worn my wrap so that we could get close for pictures."

"And now you get to be doted on." Mariano said, rubbing the leftover salve into his own hands before reaching for the lukewarm water at Archer's bedside to give him another drink. "I know Fletcher was making snickerdoodles earlier, maybe if Jewel says it's alright I can crumble one over a little bit of ice cream. Don't want to risk sending you into shock."

The sad, pleading eyes that Archer never meant to give made some of Mariano's resolve start to melt. "That sounds amazing." Archer would never, ever beg. But he'd accidentally sound miserable.

Mariano leaned in close and kissed his cheek. "Let me go ask. Lean back, let the IV keep working." He had a feeling that Archer would get his treat, even if the conditions to get it were a cool bath and a nap first.

I will drop the complete lore-dump for my OCs featured in my OC tober challenge at the end of the month. With their backstories and setting and relationships and such. Some of it is getting dropped in the challenges (looking at you Hazel).

But I just wanted to tell ya'll this now:

Kate fully tried to kill Hazel, Zachary, and Sam when they first met. Like, no questions asked, she saw the three of them, thought Zachary was a zombie, and started shooting.

Zachary and Hazel are immortal, so they don't really hold it against her. But Sam is salty about it for a WHILE.

As usual, Sanji gets the quippy line. He does have a good sense of timing for these. As a rule, One Piece’s sense of humor is not quippy, and usually whenever someone tries to look cool the rest of the crew drags them back down to earth. But in this scene it feels really natural to try to deal with an overwhelming situation with a feeble attempt at humor.

I’m sure you will not be surprised to learn that this is a dishonorable mention because Sanji originally asks if Zoro believes in god, but apparently any references to god or religion aren’t allowed because of… reasons.

Everybody calls worms wrong. Hear me out!

I don’t know how they get called in the dub (YET) but in the sub, “worms” is a SINGULAR DEFICIENT NOUN. When they refer to it singular they STILL SAY “one worms” or “a giant worms”

So I assume it’s a noun similar to “Fae” where you can say “the Fae” for both a singular fae or multiple fae
