"No Guys I Swear You Have To Go Out Of Your Way To Find It!" And why I don't love this take

This is about the Ha Ha funny Coffin Game which includes but isn't limited to topics of: Cannibalism, Murder, and the core topic of this little rant, Incest.

"I know what I'm about"

Good! So this entire little rant? Vent? Observation? Comes from the recent uptick I've seen of posts in the Tcoaal tag where people come in to defend the game with more or less this argument:

"No no guys the incest is really easy to avoid. You have to go out of your way to find it. The game even WARNS you that this is a bad route. Its nowhere in any part of the game beyond this. Honestly it's just not there actually"

And I get the want to defend the game as being more than 'The funny Incest Game'. I agree that The Coffin Of Andy and Leyley is WAY MORE than just the funny incest game. To reduce the game down to that would be a disservice to the writing that went into this game. Andrew and Ashley deserve way more and Numlie themselves deserves better credit than that.

However, I think it's also doing more harm than good to try and sweep their dynamic under the rug as something that is 'easily avoidable' and 'totally optional' I hate to break the news but Andrew's romantic inclinations towards Ashley are pretty obvious in Chapter 1. They certainly aren't as obvious as they are in Chapter 2, I'll give everyone that. But they are there, and to act like they aren't... Not to mention the defense EVERYONE gives so readily is that 'The Game Warns You This Is A Bad Thing To Do' is a lot more complicated than it might appear on first blush. First and foremost the 'narrator' is the one to say: "Somehow it seems like a highly questionable idea to take this route"

which imho is a far cry from "This is the bad end" "This has incest" "you are probably a bad person for taking this ending" that some seem to argue is the 'warning' you get. Secondly we should remember it isn't 'you' the narrator is talking to here. Effectively it's still Ashley first and foremost. When Ashley responds 'I know what I'm about' that is also the game showing us that Ashley knows what this means and still wants it.

So what's the point to this little post eh?

Well I think it's doing a little more harm than good to both the story but also anyone interested in checking the game out who might actually be genuinely triggered by such topics. Tcoaal has the siblings romantic inclinations laced into the story from point A to B. It's impossible to avoid actually. You can go the entire game ignoring any acts of kindness towards Andrew as Ashley or Ashley as Andrew, and you'll always get the scenes of Andrew playing with Ashley's hair. You will always get the text informing the player that Andrew fakes panic attacks to share a bed with Ashley. You will always get the CG of Andrew's hand in Ashley's belt loops. You will always hear the voicemail 'You think you're better than me because you can fuck him and I can't' from Ashley concerning Andrew. You will always get the hints from Mrs Graves that she knows they are too close but did nothing to curb that behavior.

It is wholly unavoidable no matter what route you take. Burial, Decay, Questionable or not.

I think to argue that it's just a silly little ending you can get does a disservice to people who might genuinely be upset by that, and I think more than anything a game that is at the very least talking about incest rather brazenly deserves the warnings it earns!

I love this game to bits, anyone who's been within ear shot of me has had to deal with me talking their fucking ear off about the Sibling Abuse Simulator. I've gone on in excruciating detail how I think Tcoaal's writing has been done dirty by saying that Andrew and Ashley's romance is just a 'ha ha shock ending', comparing it to the siblings ending in something like Corpse Party (a game where the incest ending is 100% totally avoidable, and the story has exactly nothing to do with incest as a topic, and is only brought up if you trigger that ending. One where I agree with the argument that it's just there for shock value)

Anyways I see where people are coming from, I can understand the want to defend the game as more than the sum of it's parts and I agree that it does suck that this seems to be the thing everyone is hyper-focusing on in terms of it's breach of containment. I get it man, I really do. It deserves so much better than being reduced down the way it has by the greater internet.

But to say it's avoidable.. I dunno it's like taking the dragons out of Game of Thrones. The story as a whole about so much more than the dragons.. However you'd have a fundamentally different story if they weren't there, wouldn't you?

my favourite trilogy of video games is “games banned from r/nocontext bc regular gameplay in it is so fucking insane you could post the whole subreddit there” aka crusader kings 2 rimworld and dwarf fortress. crusader kings 2 is a medieval strategy game that focuses on maintaining your political dynasty most which leads to absolutely insane shit like repeated incest and murdering infants being literal routine gameplay bc. yeah kings back then married cousins and assassinated babies all the time. and it edges out it’s sequel bc you can do shit like make the pope a horse or take over the world as aztecs with the dlc. rimworld is a space colony simulator designed to basically be a story generator first and foremost and as such allows you to do wild shit like make human meat farms and give babies hard drugs on the off chance you’re either evil or desperate and the event ai is very good at making you consider some extremely vile shit out of desperation. and dwarf fortress is. honestly at this point it’s easier to list what dwarf fortress Isn’t than what it Is and what it Isn’t is anything remotely approaching sane and reasonable.

and like i love them bc they’re not, like, weird shock value shit. they’re extremely in depth simulation games that entirely through emergent gameplay very easily can lead to you doing extremely fucked shit bc there’s so many intersecting mechanics at play and they can be hard as shit. like there’s other games that are banned like isaac but that’s a game that inherently has unavoidable fucked shit everywhere (and it’s great, go play isaac) you Can theoretically play these three in a way that’s entirely moral and upstanding quite easily. but they’re so fucking wild you end up committing horrific atrocities and not even realising until like a hour later when you consider murdering babies is kinda messed up regardless of the gameplay benefit. 10/10 genre i get why there is like three main ones bc it’s an insanely complicated feat to pull off that needs both an extremely wide amount of content with an equal amount of depth which means you’re looking into decade long production cycles with inevitably messy ass code few are successful but the final result is so good. 10/10 would genuinely start to question my own morality after playing again.

Most people wouldn't argue against depictions of things like murder, cannibalism, gore, and other forms of violence in fiction. Somebody who will be substantially upset by fictional dead kids is smart enough to just not consume the dead kid stories. It makes absolutely zero sense for people to be fine with those things being explicitly shown in books or TV and draw the line at so much as implied incest, pedophilia, or rape.

And yes, people are going to use it as a coping mechanism. People use games like Yandere Simulator or Super Smash Bros as a coping mechanism, too. The entire fucking point of doing that is to not hurt real people. Anyone who doesn't realize that needs a lesson in basic fucking logic.

Even then, if you can enjoy movies like Saw and not want to kidnap and murder people, then you should be fully able to comprehend how someone can enjoy the bullshit you hypocritically consider problematic and not want to commit sex crimes.

And yes, there will be people who consume the media you hate and end up raping someone or some shit. There were two little girls who tried to murder their friend because they didn't want Slenderman to hurt their families, too. I don't see you saying violence shouldn't be allowed to be depicted in fiction.

And you're allowed to find fictional pedophilia, rape, and incest disgusting just as much as people are allowed to find fictional murder, gore, and cannibalism disgusting. But disgust isn't an indicator of morality. There is no such thing as immoral fiction, only fiction we don't want to see.

At the end of the day, anyone who actually gives a fuck has less than half a brain cell. You should all go the fuck outside, maybe do something to help real people instead of bitching about people "hurting" fake ones wrong.

How do you reconcile being pro ship with being against Hogwarts: Blood Libel Simulator?

honestly i think being pro ship or pro fiction which i prefer is recognizing there's a lot of nuance in the conversation. especially in terms of what people consider harmful but is just taboo versus what is actually harmful in hateful speech / rhetoric. & the contrast of smaller fanworks that won't even reach a 5th of the potential audience that a worldwide franchise such as harry potter will with it's new blood libel game.

people shipping incest or age gap or exploring other problematic / taboo topics in media will not be affected in a 1 to 1 way when doing so, this has been proven time & time again in various studies. but the propaganda that is in media does affect people in how they view the irl groups targeted by these propaganda pieces.

no one with a functioning pre frontal cortex & some self awareness will be convinced that incest is okay because other people ship 2 siblings. there are societal norms against things such as incest, murder, etc & there have been for thousands of years.

but things like racism? antisemitism? sexism, misogyny, tranpshobia, etc? these are all condoned in society, society has these old hatreds built into the foundations of them & they need to be upacked & broken down.

problematic / taboo topics =/= harmful rhetoric. the two are distinctly different & honestly that's why people who are pro fiction / pro ship need to have a more stringent stance against the "profics / proshippers" who do allow hateful speech / various bigotries just because they support taboo subjects. it makes spaces for pro fiction people who are poc, jewish, queer, disabled, etc just unsafe overall.

If you look at the tags on my original post, this post was originally about hospital horror, and how it's allowed to exist even if an individual has medical trauma and doesn't like the genre. But since someone wanted to go and put some shit on my post that I disagree with:

No, actually, it doesn't exclude those things. Dark themes in fiction are allowed to exist whether you like them or not.

Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita was not a real little girl who really got brutalized. She was a fictional character. No real child was harmed. People are not reading Lolita and going out thinking, "oh, this told me to abuse children, and clearly it's morally okay now." The existence of Lolita is not responsible for the existence of CSA.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare was pretty meta, but Freddy Krueger was still never real and never hurt any real kids, either. He's a story. None of those kids ever died, none of them ever got abused, and Fred Krueger never got burned to death, because they're all fake and never existed. Murder and CSA in the real world aren't Freddy Krueger's fault.

Jaime and Cersei Lannister are not real people. They are fake. They are words on paper, and actors on a screen. Lena Headey and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau are not siblings, and did not ever have real sex in the show. It was fake, simulated, not real sex. No siblings actually fucked. Ghostface was played by a combination of stuntmen and a very talented voice actor, and all his murder victims were actors who were filming a pretend story. It was all choreographed and nobody really died. The benind-the-scenes stuff for the Scream series is actually really cool if you're into that sort of thing like I am.

Arcane didn't put grenade launchers in people's hands and turn them into vigilante fighters juiced up on Super Drugs--and you know what, neither did any of the things the Batman franchise has churned out. The Joker and Scarecrow and Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn aren't out there terrorizing New York City, because they're fantasy supervillains who aren't real and can't hurt you.

The endless waves of bandits in Skyrim are pixels on a screen, and I'm not killing real men when I cut them down. No real people got hurt when my Sims 4 house caught fire. Playing Super Smash Brothers hasn't gotten me into underground fighting rings, and neither did watching Fight Club.

It's all fiction.

None of it is real.

The characters are fake and do not exist.

Curate your own media experience and get your head out of your ass.

People make shit. It's what we do. We make shit to explore, to inspire, to explain, to understand, but also to cope, to process, to educate, to warn, to go, "hey, wouldn't that be fucked up? Wild, right?"

I find possession stories super fucking triggering if I encounter them without warning, especially if they function as a sexual abuse metaphor. I'm not over here campaigning for every horror artist to stop writing possession stories because they make me feel shaky and dissociated. I just check Does The Dog Die before watching certain genres, and I have my husband or roommate preview anything I think might upset me so they can give me more detail.
