Do you have any tips on making recognizable designs that are not too complicated but not too simple?

yes! my main tip would be to focus on shapes and patterns rather than colors.

for example, here's canon accurate vanilla trio:

not much variety, besides hunter(but still not much)

now, here's mine (lineart & grayscale)

to make them look more unique i try to exaggerate their shapes just enough to be distinct, but not too much to make them look like different species. (ex: survivor is long, monk is round, hunter is oblong)

as for colors, if you're going for simplicity, stick to a pallet of 2-3 hues, and make them vary in shades. i almost never use more than 3 hues.

*monochrome = based on one hue, bicolor = based on two hues, triadic = based on three hues.
